oakland bart station. heather? >> and this is the site of the trouble that. is where a raging fire started around 12:15 this morning and a senior housing center that is still under construction. sky 7 is over the west oakland bart station now. and and abc 7 is at the station now and things have been moving out there all day. >> yes. all of a sudden without warning all day, bart telling us they'd be single tracking maybe by 4:00 this afternoon, maybe double tracking by 5:00 but that may be too much to hope for, then, all of a sudden about five or 10 minutes ago they're open for business in both directions. now, the most-important step this afternoon took place after 3:00. the first of eight empty trains rolled through the station. and bart had to make sure not only the system was working

properly but that it was safe to put peak passengers and trains after spending all day here making repairs to about 400 feet of third rail warped z had to replace a half mile worth of something called porcelain insul laters and and and that is intricate electronic cables located inside. bart called it a heroic effort but a small group of ef sqarts st they're hoping to have full normal service restored for tomorrow morning's commute. and trains will be rolling slowly, they're going to extend service on two lines from daily city to fremont and

daily city richmond and they normally end service at 7:00 they're going to extend that until 8:00 this evening. and reporting live at west oakland bart station, abc 7 news. >> thank you. and here is some more information about how this started. flames roared into the sky this morning. that is a wood frame under construction four-story senior center that was a week from completion. >> and security guards told abc 7 news he saw three people at the site before he saw flames. the fire is contained and the crew is on the site to watch for any hot spots. >> and there are federal agents investigating and so are arson inspectors. >> one of the busiest stations is in san francisco at embarcadero. >> and carolyn tyler is there live, carolyn? >> and there are thousands of

commuters here, it seems they're finding out train system is beginning to recover. and heather said it's out of the blue. it's very different from what we've seen just a short time ago. >> it's the busiest station, nearly 40,000 passengers flow through each day, but it's been like a ghost town this afternoon except for those hoping to get out of town to the east bay. >> and i just wanted to go home to relax but that is not going to happen. >> and -- i don't know what i can do. >> the same problem, but worse this morning. people arriving at east bay bart stations unaware of the fire and now they've got to get back. >> we went to the game. then, now we're just like. >> so that we can go home but

>> and at 4:30 we're going to check in with abc 7 news at the scene of the fire that shut down bart. the place where this started this morning. >> and we're going to talk to vic lee on the peninsula and that is where fans were told to go. >> this is abc 7 news reporter to show us what is going on there. ama? >> and there is we can tell, and behind me there isn't a huge line of people waiting but take a look at video earlier. there is at least 20 extra buses to try to help out people getting home. the buses are taking people there.

and they want to make sure everybody gets on the bus here, he said his employer was very understanding and let him leave work early. and this is so he can work at home. he did have a long line of people. the buses were flowing in but we had to wait for with us buses to return. looks like they're starting to come in. so it's not looking too bad right now. and hopefully, will stay that way since bart is back up at this point. but we did have a lot of people trying to get on the bus so they can get home. in san francisco, abc 7 news. >> so what have people commuters going back and forth to work and i imagine people were going to wacht golf match as well? >> there is one lady running. i was like can we talk to you?

she had to run to get on the bus and said that she left in the sixth inning. so everybody was worried about that. hopefully, tomorrow will be a nice, smooth day. >> and thank you very much. >> and now a look at traffic around the bay. >> there is is a frustrating day. for those that came by car you're going to have to go out by car. and we have passenger arriving now from san francisco. and there is a shot sky 7. you're looking at trains rolling slowly this afternoon and there is extended service because of this problem. daily city service, ream front to richmond extended until 8:00 this evening. and extra ac transit buses to get you back to the east bay. ferries running extra service today, let's take a look currently. jammed headed to the bay bridge from san francisco and

oakland bart station. the trouble started at 2:15 this morning with a fire. >> and massive construction fire that service senior center was a week from completion. and service is out more than 13 hours and it's resumed. but what a mess. >> it's been a mess all day long. bart service resumed at about 4:00, about 15 minutes ago or so. >> the shut down is having a major impact on ferry service. >> abc 7 news is monitoring an increase in passengers today and he's live from the ferry building. >> there is get out of town as fast as you can. that is advice from the folks at bay link up in vallejo talking about getting out of san francisco today. and the real impact has been in the ferry service between here and oakland. lots of standing and waiting here at the ferry terminal. and david decembereler caught

usual in order to accommodate extra riders ferry service tripled boats that had to hang out and wait for dock space to open up. another bottle neck in morning commute. >> this is just excess traffic. we don't usually, we're running three boats now. usually there is only one. >> this afternoon, passenger arrived and told us that they just came to san francisco. and one of those head back to oakland, mike arrow. >> i was on time for meeting. it was at 11:00. >> and then back in line at the ferry building. >> about 2:00 so... long process for one hour. >> and he is still smiling. this is the end of the line. and take a look. there is a looping back to get to ferry boats. of course they have added an

extra boat this afternoon. and there is four times number of riders here this morning in oakland. that adds up to between 12, 13,000 people riding the ferry today. >> people are did you say they're getting free rides? are they have a good mood about that? >> they were paying 6:30 but were able to buy ticket on the boat. they weren't accepting tickets but perhaps that is changing as the day goes on. i'll check in to find out and we'll be back with you at 5:00. >> thank you so much. >> there is an amber alert for a santaosa man suspected of kidnapping his three daughters saying he on fronted his estranged wife in a shopping center, he took the daughters

saying she would never see them again. and a 3-year-old sophia, 5-year-old mariah and 7-year-old alina are believed to be with their father in a chevolet tahoe. and this is if you see this man, asked to call patrol immediately so they can get the girls back where they belong. >> just moments ago police announced ab arrest of a hit and run murder in a man in a wheelchair. a 25-year-old has been charged with murder and he was crossing a street last year when he hit him from behind. he was arrested in a federal under cover drug operation.

this is going to be a hot day, saturday inland, especially. there is a high pressure continuing to build in. there is a breezy pattern we've had, breezy condition as long the coast and there is a shift next couple days. by saturday morning we're going to see off shore flow bringing us dry, warm weather inland to the coastline. it's going to contribute to a warm up. low temperatures are patches of fog and coastline. a patch or two along the bay to east bay. low temperatures into low to mid-50s and there is

conditions of round two there are sunny skies, temperatures from low 50s into morning to low 60s into afternoon. so mild and breezy. winds out of the west-northwest at 10-20 miles per hour. let's take a look at readings projected highs for tomorrow around this high, bay area brief and ranging from 64 in half moon bay to 70s in san francisco. low to mid-90s inland north bay. there is inland east bay, conk livermore low 90s near monterey bay highs into the bay upper 80s inland and there is a temperatures peaking up to 100 degrees into hottest locations. mid-70s on the coast. temperatures dropping off a few degrees sunday. very, very warm.

lower deck jammed already at this hour. this is the mcarthur maze. headed into the toll plaza and beyond 580 and 880. there is service restored throughout the transbay two there are extra transits to get you back home this afternoon. and we'll follow it for you all afternoon as well. >> commuters expeer yensing that turmoil as well as witnesses to the fire sent us video and pike pic tours and they tell a story from the beginning. >> this video taken from entrance of the bart station just moments after that fire started. about 2:15 in the morning. you can see flames sweep across the bart tracks. >> interest is a witness told us he was shocked by the size of the fire. >> i had never seen that much flames in my life.
