>> in the news this saturday morning, june 16th, dozens of people are displaced right now on the peninsula after an apartment building fire in burlingame. investigators are trying to find out what sparked a 300-acre wildfire in sunol as firefighters prepare for a busy weekend. good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. the busy weekend has to do with the heat we will be having. here is lisa with the hot one for you. >> good morning. a beautiful start to the day. 5:47 the official start to sunrise. we are looking for a red flag in effect for the higher elevations of the north bay. you will notice lake county, napa, sonoma, the higher elevations in marin county,

looking at the critical fire weather. we have winds from 15 to 30 miles an hour. could see gusts up to 40 miles an hour and the relative humidity in the teens. we will be looking at the winds to continue to ramp up throughout the morning hours and then they will die back, but then the heat is our next issue. noontime the 60s and 70s. and even 80s. by the afternoon we are talking about 102. spare the air day today. but relief is in sight. i'll explain later. terry. >> dozens of people are burned out of their homes right now after an apartment fire in burlingame is destroyed three units and damned another. the call came in as a grease fire just after 11:00 last night. fire crews arrived to find several third floor apartments in flamed. fire was knocked down in about an hour. there are no injuries. this morning the red cross is helping 4 displaced residents.

fire investigators are still trying to determine how the fire got started and spread so quickly. those are also questions in morning either of fremont where fire crews of keeping watch on the welch fire. they are investigating how the 300-acre wildfire in the sunol regional which wilderness got sd yesterday afternoon. the fire was 90% contained late last night but the crews won't declare if fully under control until they see it by date. >> reporter: more than 200 firefighters, supported by helicopters and fixed wing aircraft fought flames, eat and flames here. as you see from sky 7hd, the flames rapidly consumed the dry brush and grasses on the hillside. five fire agencies, including the department of corrections, were on hand. >> we hit it hard with a lot of resources. we also with the heat that we've been experiencing, and will be experiencing, we wanted to throw a lot of resources at it quickly to try to done taken it. >> in this is the kind of dry

grassland that could have caused the fire to on more than 1,000 acres according to firefighters. john, who raises his cattle on the land which is owned by the san francisco water district, came by to check on the damage. >> we just need to go find out how far back it burned and if we need to fix fence or has it damaged water facilities or what. >> a little more than 300 acres were charred. no homes or structured were threatened. fire danger in the bay area hills is high. a fire broke out in marijuana -- marin county just after red flag warnings were put out. the fire chief said if the winds were a concern there, there will be a problem here. >> within marin county the winds don't know when to stop. if they are in the bay area the winds will potentially surface, maybe not to the red flag potential, but they will be increasing. >> the fire began on the grass about ten feet off the road. they placed flag markers around the flagged area to determine exactly how the fire started.

fire investigators will not say whether the fire was suspicious or not until they analyze all the evidence. ay7 news. . >> stunning new information this morning about that fire that disrupted bart service thursday. a night watch man said he was forced at gunpoint to leave that building where the fire broke out. that's according to our media partner the oakland tribune. he was surprised by three men just before the fire erupted about 2:00 a.m. in a senior citizen home under construction. building inspector and two atf agents entered the burned-out building yesterday to determine if it is safe enough for an investigation to begin into the cause of that fire. there are parts that possibly could collapse inside so the building engineer is just going to come and reassess the situation, make sure what parts are actually safe and unsafe for the investigators to go inside. >> the police have not confirmed the night watch man's story. investigators are look for suspects in video caught by bart security cameras.

in there is a ruptured water tank that released a bad odor into the air. a smell of rotten eggs went through rodeo yesterday. the refinery officials expect a run tower will be sealed by this afternoon. a health advisory was issued warning people with breathing problems to stay indoors. right now in oakland parents are camped out on one of several school campuses trying to prevent them from being shut down in a cost cutting move. john austin sorts reports on the occupation of lakewood elementary school. >> as the sun went down the tents went up at the school with some parents and their children hoping to make a statement. >> wanting to come down and speak out against what's going on in oakland and i want everyone in oakland and across the nation know that this is going to stop. we are going to stop this on our

public education. it's not acceptable. >> lakewood closed for good. >> we plan on staying here until something changes. >> lakewood is one of five public schools order shut down. the school blames money problems and declining enrollment. one school was spared. lazear elementary will become a charter school. >> although it's a tough decision it's one we need to make for the overall benefit of the school district. >> the final day of class brought out parents and children with a heartfelt connection to lakeview. >> i am going to miss it. i drive by and say that's a great school. and i want to be able to say that more often. >> we cared for each other's children, we would make sure that everyone had rides. you know, we had each other's backs and i think that's important. >> now protesters are having their say. the school district said it will allow them to stay for the time

of north with gusts up to 40 for lake county and marin county. critical fire weather with the relative humidity right now and about 38, 39%. not bad but elsewhere in the 70, 80% range and that quickly will dry out today. look at these numbers at 5:00 this morning. 64 livermore, 60 san jose, but a chilly 48 half moon bay with visibility at about 5 miles. we are warmer this morning by as much as 8 degrees. mountain view 12 degrees warmer than yesterday morning in livermore. so starting out with a little bit more heat. so it's not going to take much with the strong ridge of high pressure to get to those triple digits in our inland valleys today. high fire danger continues in the hills and we will cool down quickly. the fog comes back overnight tonight. it looks like the winds will pick up. it is going to stay out of the bay, though, until tomorrow. so air quality good along the coast but you saw still pretty hazy out there, and certainly

poor for our east bay valleys, inland and the santa clara valleys. take it easy. if you need to exercise i would do it early because by the afternoon not only do we have no fog but the higher pressure pushing on the atmosphere and the warm temperatures. take a look. the only place that will be spared pretty much the shoreline a few high clouds from time too time as the high continues to build to the north of us and the flow around the high increasing that offshore flow. and that will allow for compressional down sloped winds and that's the quick heating of the day. so today the numbers soar and then by tomorrow, though, look what happens. the fog comes back quickly. we will have the sea breeze and much, much cooler tomorrow. in and around the bay today we are talking 90s from san jose, 95 in campbell, 91 in menlo park with 82 milbrae. 70s at the coast, half moon bay, pacifica. in the city warmer today by as much as 6 degrees. downtown 75. 95 in novato, 7 in napa but 100

so the spread is significant this morning with the warming already underway. 12 degrees warmer this morning livermore than you were yesterday morning on the peninsula. redwood city and mountain view, you are a lot warmer. we have an airshow in san carlos this afternoon. it should be quite hot with length of 80s there. near 100 for the tri-valley. high fire danger not only in the north bay, but with that triple digit heat and the relative humidity, really sinking without the fuel -- plenty of fuel in the hills without that moisture. it will be a very high fire danger for the diablo range right on through the day today. so with the cool expected tomorrow, the second part of the weekend pretty nice. so good air quality, but even by the water it's not the best. you can see the poor air quality for santa clara, the east bay valleys. here's a look what you expect in our temperature spread. wow. 80s close to oakland with upper 70s in san francisco. 90s elsewhere and it's all
