>> carolyn: good morning. thanks for joining us. let's start with a quick first look at the father's day forecast with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> lisa: good morning. the marine layer started early this morning, central coast 2:00 and traveled all the way to point reyes. from mount tam we have the fog rolling through the golden gate. everyone will feel a cooldown but most dramatically along the coast. low 70s in livermore, but southwest winds allowing for the cooldown into antioch but modest there. low clouds and fog will stay with us along the coast. i will than sunny there but tonight it moves across the bay for dramatic cooling. this morning we're still looking at 60s and 70s and then 80s today by midday inland.

mid 90s should do it. but we will remain very comfortable around the bay. >> carolyn: we begin with breaking news from southern california where rodney king has died at age 47. king's personal assistant confirms he was found dead by his fiancee. entertainment website reports that he was found at the bottom of a pool just after 5:00 this morning. a chance to revive him were unsuccessful. the police have opened an investigation. king became known worldwide back in 1991 after he was severely beaten by lapd officers and violence captured on home video. a year later after the officers involved were acquitted of charges, riots and unrest broke out on the streets of l.a. scores of businesses were burned. king became known for his plea, can't we all just get along.

again, rodney king found dead this morning at the age of 47. a san mateo family is grieving this morning after their three-year-old daughter drowned at a lagoon near their home. a candlelight vigil is a was held last night where the little girl died yesterday. her parents initially called 911 to report their daughter missing. she apparently wandered away from home around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. san mateo police quickly begin searching. she was discovered in the lagoon by neighbors a short time later. >> the child was pulled from the water. they tried to revive the child but weren't able to. >> it's really sad. i hope i don't know the child, it will be worse. >> carolyn: the girl's identity has not been released yet. the coroner's office has taken over the investigation but they say it appears to be an accidental death.

oakland police have arrested a 19-year-old woman they believe deliberately struck and killed a 33-year-old oakland man with a car last night. the victim was trying to break up a fight. it happened on 61st avenue just after 9:00. intersection was shut down while police gathered evidence and talked to witnesses. investigators say they consider this a homicide, not a hit and run accident. dozens of burlingame residents are out of their homes this morning because of a fire that caused widespread damage to their apartment building. we first reported the fire as breaking news yesterday morning. lisa amin gulezian follows up with the displaced residents. >> my apartment is on fire. if i stayed there a couple minutes i wouldn't be here right now. >> fear and flames rushed across the top of floor of this

building. >> two were involved with heavy fire damage, then 15 on the third floor you are uninhabitable due to smoke and heat. >> 25 apartments and more than 50 people are impacted. red cross set up a disaster center where displaced residents can get food and water and even a place to sleep. normally the red cross would put people up in hotels. >> unfortunately right now, there are not very many hotel rooms available. the u.s. open has apparently filled a lot of those. >> frustration for many residents is growing, not just because of the lack of lodging but because of this. >> the fire alarm didn't go off and i didn't hear anything at all. >> some residents i spoke with tell me the alarm sounded once they were just about out of the building. complex uses manual fire alarms.

they are checking the entire system to see if smoke detectors that are not required to be hooked up to the system were working. >> the fire alarm went off so late makes me doubt, i don't know. >> apartment management would not comment on the fire or on the alarm system, but i did learn that the entire system was tested by a third party company and it passed inspection in april. in burlingame, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> a possible gang shooting in san jose has sent one person to the hospital. multiple shots were fired last night near pride and orange street. one person shot perhaps in the back. police are looking for two people who drove off in a newer beige car, possibly a honda. so far no suspects are in custody. >> this morning a major water

main break in benicia is fixed after causing a street and highway closure. public works shut off the water yesterday afternoon but not before the pressure raised the pavement on west 7th street three feet feet above ground. water reached the off-ramp of 780. west 7th street and off-ramp are now back open. >> there is a new scholarship established to honor one of san francisco's fallen heroes. last year victor perez and anthony valerio died battling a house fire. friends and family of perez founded a scholarship at reardon high school which was his at ma matteder. >> every day, definitely think about him and i think about it. it was very difficult. he was like a second dad to me

>> carolyn: voters in greece are heading to the polls for the second time in six weeks in the most critical election in 40 years. at stake is their place in the european union. will they accept billions in bailouts or will they side with the young liberal politician that vows to rip up those agreements, cancel privatization and nationalize the banks. both parties are in a virtual tie. in egypt another historic election, polls are open for the second and last day for the presidential election. this is the first time egyptians have actually had a choice electing their leader. that person will most likely be forced to answer to the military they recently dissolved the parliament.

prosecutors are preparing to wrap up their case against jerry sandusky. that is tomorrow but today, he is undergoing court ordered psychiatric testing. cnn reports according to a source with knowledge of the case, prosecutors scheduled sandusky's exam after his defense attorneys won the right to introduce testimony on whether he suffers from a mental disorder. he is charged with sexually abusing ten boys over 15 years, charges he adamantly denies. >> president obama talked to a lot of people on friday, allowing a new immigration policy allowing young immigrants to stay here. mitt romney's campaign coach went head to head on the issue on abc's this week. this is not a permanent solution. this simply gives their homeland security and law enforcement officials the opportunity to enforce the law with some discretion and allows these

young people who came here many times early in their life and that want to serve in our military and go to our colleges to apply for a two-year period. >> governor romney has set i want strong border enforcement but on the issue what to do with young children who have come here through no fault of their own, he has been consistent, he would be open to an option for military service. while mitt romney said this morning he would not declare such a policy illegal, he would work the path a different law that helps young immigrants brought into the u.s. by their parents. high winds in colorado are not helping firefighters battle the most destructive wildfire in the state's history. with 1891 homes destroyed. fire crews say they are at war with mother nature. ginger zee says it's a war that could continue through the end 6 summer. >> eight days of high fire

eight states. so far this year, firings have torched a millionaires acres across the country. back in colorado. they are going to win the battle for property but it's weather that started it and it will be weather that ends it. >> we hope to contain it today but that will something that will depend on mother nature. >> carolyn: now, in southern california a brush fire burning in riverside county is now 30% contained. the fire has charred 2200 acres of brush. it is still growing. this is near the i-10 freeway. firefighters have been dealing with winds gusting up to 30 miles an hour. fortunately no injuries reported and no structures are threatened. officials say the cause is under investigation. >> lisa argen is here talking about our father's day forecast. >> lisa: mother nature has been

>> carolyn: a late afternoon dust storm swept into phoenix, you can see it approaching in too time lapse sequence. visibility in some places down to eighth of a mile. numerous crashes made the closure of a freeway south of phoenix, it was tied to a thunderstorm that kicked up the desert dust around 5:00 in the afternoon. quite a sight there. >> lisa: 35 mile-an-hour winds. we'll have 35-degree temperatured spread today. we'll look for the numbers to come down, but more dramatic around the shoreline. sn nice and sunny in santa cruz. only in the 50s in central coast. 60s in marin county. 70s in east bay valleys. live doppler 7-hd, no rain but we are looking at the low clouds

started out about 2:00 this morning, traveling up from the central coast making it up to point reyes. here is the key. it is staying offshore. it will take another 24 hours for it to move across the bay then we get mist and drizzle and more cooling in the valleys. 54 in half moon bay. 71 in fremont. 77 in livermore. it's going to be another warm to hot day in our inland valleys but we will take the edge off. already the southwesterly wind is making its influence felt in to the delta. that tells us that we are coming down temperature-wise, 7 degrees cooler in san francisco but some numbers still a little warmer than we were 24 hours ago. wind direction is out of the west for the delta, up to 23 miles an hour. you'll notice a light westerly wind in hayward. we will look for the winds to be increasing along the coast. elsewhere, it is still going to

be another warm day. father's day turning out to be a nice afternoon with cooler temperatures and then the cooling trend for the beginning of the workweek. in fact mist and drizzle here this morning but by mitt week it gets halted and another ridge of high pressure is going to build in. yesterday, wow, livermore airport, 106 today. forecasting a high low to mid-90s. 12 degrees cooler. napa was 101. 86 in the city. half moon bay, santa cruz and watsonville a little bit cooling. here is what we can expect today. cooling has gotten underway. fog pulls back. we'll see plenty of sunshine and then the next couple of days, 70s and 80s spread throughout the bay with a good dose of low clouds and stratus in the morning. really hot in the central valley with high fire danger down from the northern sierra down to yosemite and down to reno today.

we are looking at a breezy day, sunshine at the olympic club. should be nice but certainly much cooler. back home. 90s in the south bay. 99 in san jose, 86 in sunnyvale. 62 in pacifica. san francisco, pleasant afternoon. in the north bay, few 90s but a better afternoon at novato at 89. oakland 78. inland east bay still hot but not as hot as it was. 94 in livermore and down by the monterey bay, fog will stay around the shoreline, sunny with cool sea breeze and look ahead shows the cooling trend will spread all the way into the delta tomorrow. then sunny and warmer for the first day of summer on wednesday. >> carolyn: cooler weather is probably good for the golfers and spectators as well as the

yale. >> in san francisco a city that is two-thirds renters are sometimes a strange relationship between renters and homeowners. lawmakers have introduced a controversial proposal designed to help entry level homeowners move up a notch but advocates for renters are threatening to kill the plan. >> it looks like an old-fashioned game show and most of contestants will lose. for the past three years, lea were hoping they will win the city's lottery to convert their home into a condo. they have what is called a tenancy in common where several individuals get together to buy a building. unlike condos you don't buy your own unit and you share the mortgage. >> being partners with people that are essentially strangers to you, open up your finances to them. >> it's entry level to home

are digging a tunnel that will secure much of the bay area's water supply in the event of a major earthquake. david louie has this exclusive. >> they call it a hole through, two tunnels dug from open certain ends 450 feet below the hills. two separate crews were finally able to shake hands. because of safety concerns they shot the video inside the tunnel. >> today marks a milestone. we have now completed a 4500 foot run. >> when it's completed the new tunnel will travel three and a half miles under ground supplementing an older pipe built in 1934. it supplies water to 2.1 million people in the area. >> we still have pipes to go in here, eight foot pipes to pipe

our beaches. 1500 foot marine layer, our system substantial cooling, somewhat cooler inland. live doppler 7-hd shows the stratus along the coast. it's taken about six hours or so but working hard since 2:00 this morning making its way all the way up to the north. the winds will be increasing today. if you are at the coast or on the peninsula. some gusts up to 30 miles an hour, but we're already looking at a very warm started for the day inland. our big ridge of high pressure not ready to give way quite yet for folks in inland valleys around the tri-valley. 62 in oakland, with 66 in san carlos. most areas experience some cooling this morning but we started out so warm that still pretty toasty up in the north bay. wind directions will change from the offshore flow to onshore flow. some changes everywhere today,

just the degree of change will be limited as you head further east. south wind at 14 right now. half moon bay, visibility just down to about a mile and a half. mild this morning. with a cooler day for everyone. patchy fog increases throughout the day. cooling trend will get better established tonight. mist and drizzle to greet you tomorrow. 2-18 degrees cooler than yesterday. all due to this stratus and flow coming in from the ocean. if you are like the cooler weather you will like today. out of triple-digits around napa. 94 in livermore. san francisco in the upper 60s. mid 60s half moon bay. sea breeze yesterday, right at the beaches. today not a whole lot of change. we will look for an increase for some of the wind cooling trend, fog pulls back but right along the coast. at the olympic club we'll see some of the fog sneak in. 70s and 80s in the bay in inland
