can we all get along? >> that famous call for calm from rodney king. king was found dead in a swimming pool. he was 47 years old. good evening. >> i'm alan wang. rodney king became the focus of the most destructive race riots in our history. lapd officers were videotaped beating king after a high-speed chase. the four wheis officers were acquitted one year later sparking outrage in the african-american community. >> oakland attorney john burris was among a teal of lawyers that represented rodney king for a civil lawsuit and the city of los angeles. we spoke with burris this morning and joins us with

details. >> rodney king was found dead at his home. his fiancee discovered the body and called 911. john burris says the last time he saw king was in a televised anniversary. he will be remembered as a man that was unwittingly thrusted in the public eye. >> these images of los angeles police officers swinging away at rodney king were a shock for most viewers but john burris says it illustrated what he says the black community experience order a regular basis. >> there was under current of police brutality that had always occurred in the african-american community but you didn't see it. >> can we all get along? can we get along. >> during the riots that followed the acquittal of the officers accused of his beating. he pleaded for calm as los angeles was ablaze. >> this case thrusted him into a

spotlight that he never wanted and never really adjusted to. when i came to know him as part of the case he was relatively shy. >> in his oakland office he has a sketches of lawsuit against the officers involved and the lapd. king was award building $3.89 million. the videotaped beating of rodney king affected policing across the country. >> from where we have come from 1991 to today, we almost anticipate that we will be videotaped. >> anthony rivera was a captain on the police force back in 1992 back when demonstrations broke out following the acquittals of the rodney king case. he was appointed as police chief because of the fallout of the hajt of the demonstrations in san francisco. he currently teaches at the university of san francisco and some of his lessons are rooted

in the rodney king case. >> the police were very frustrated with it back in 1991 but ultimately it's been a good thing, it's been a good thing for our training and discipline. >> reporter: now right now police in realto says there is no foul play suspected in king's death. they will conduct an autopsy to see if drugs or alcohol were involved. he had a well documented problems with substance abuse. the l.a. riots that started april 29, 1992 was the worst riots in u.s. history. 53 people died and more than 2,000 were injured. arsonists set some 7,000 fires. backe here in the bay area, opening arguments are set to begin tomorrow in the hearing for suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. in declaration released friday a key witness provided a damaging account of the domestic dispute that put him in the hot seat. ivory madison that lives

next-door to him. >> ivory madison said she videotaped this bruise on her arm. she says it was inflicted while arguing on new year's eve. the dispute took place in couple's home in front of their two-year-old son. ross pushed her violently. specifically he slammed her against the wall while grabbing her arm and roughed to let go. mirkarimi says he bruised his wife from trying to leave with the car with their son. >> whatever they are going to do to political thing they are doing, i get it but being out in the community in san francisco and see all the supported reminds me why we need to fight. >> this was video from i-team reporter dan noyes traveled to venezuela with an interview with lopez. she left san francisco with the

couple's child to visit her family. lopez described the incident for the i-team. >> we came back home. i said, okay, we cannot talk. and then i said stop. i said stop it. he reacted -- oh, my gosh. i said let's go inside. >> when he grabbed you he understood he shouldn't touch you and let go? >> he immediately, he stopped. >> the statements detail how lopez described to her friend how her husband treated her and her son. he said he makes me beg for gas money, money for food for clothes, for everything. mirkarimi says he worries his relationship with his son would suffer if lopez took the boy to venezuela but madison painted a different picture when she quoted her conversations with lopez. she told me that ross virtually never cared for him and been alone with him perhaps an hour

per month during his entire life. the mayor suspended mirkarimi from his office after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in the case. sheriff ross mirkarimi tells us he has not seen madison's statement. you can see the entire document on our website at abc7news.com under see it on tv. a 19-year-old woman in oakland faces charges tonight after police say she intentionally rammed down and killed a man. it happened on east long street just after 9:00 last night. a 33-year-old man was trying to break up a street fight when he was hit. police arrested the woman who they say it was involved with the fight just before she drove away running counsel that man. oakland police are on the cases tonight after a well known artist was found stabbed to death inside his home. this is an image of michael thorn bradley in his studio back in 1980. he earned three degrees from u.c. berkeley.

tribune reports the 67-year-old was found dead thursday inside his home on market street in west oakland. he had been there for some time. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of his killer. >> on the peninsula friends and neighbors are remembering a three-year-old girl who drowned near her home. they left candles outside a memorandum where the child died yesterday. they say it was tragic accident. the girl apparently wandered away from the home yesterday afternoon. she was discovered in a lagoon by neighbors short time later. >> the child was pulled from the water. they tried to revive the child but weren't able to. >> it's really sad. i hope i don't know the child. it will be worse. >> the name of the girl has not been released. winds are big challenge tonight for crews battling the most destructive file in colorado state history. flames have charred about 86

square miles and 181 homes. evacuation notices to went out to hundred other residents today. local authorities are now concerned about looting. more than 1600 personnel are working on the fire which was sparked by lightning and is 45% contained. back here in california, crews continue to battle a wildfire that has charred at least 2200 acres of brush in a remote area of riverside county. at least 445 firefighters aided by five air tankers and helicopters have contained about 30% of the fire. the knriams are not threatening homes and the cause is under investigation. and finally drying out in benicia where a water main break closed down a street and highway. repair work wrapped up this morning. they shut off the water yesterday afternoon but not before it raised the pavement three feet above ground. water reached the off-ramp of 780, west seventh street and the off-ramp are now open.

in san jose members of the syrian american council rallied against president assad and the violence in that country. many can't celebrated father's day because their dads are dead are in prison. all the syrian people want are basic human rights. >> people like you and i, we want freedom. we want to be able to have free press. unfortunately the assad regime has been killing and torturing people for over 16 months now. >> they demanded government and rebel forces stop fighting long

enough to evacuate civilians from the city of homs. >> cigarette tax is gaining some support as a ballot counted. majority of votes are still against the tax but the lead is shrinking. yes vote is trailing about 16,800 votes with 48% for the measure and 52% against it. they say there are still 436,000 uncounted ballots. >> a lot of kids depend on free lunches for school. oakland will kick off a free summer lunch tomorrow. it feeds 20,000 kids that depend on reduced cost meals. they will be served at more than 70 sites. they are available to anyone under the age of 80 --18 and there is no paperwork to fill out.

woman in texas survived a fiery car crash thanks to on to a member of the air force. nancy's car ended up on its side after she lost control in houston two weeks ago. she was trapped in the driver's seat. all of a sudden a man jumped on top of her car, smashed out a window with a fire extinguisher extinguisher and pulled her to safety. >> it turned out to be a staff sergeant michael corbin. he happens to keep emergency response to other members of the texas international guard. this happened to be the first time that he had ever used that training. >> perfect timing. at this hour a tra decision wrapping up in north beach. today is the last day of 58th annual north beach festival held on columbus avenue. it celebrates the italian in all of us.

started to race in overnight last night. it is banking up near the coast. that has allowed temperatures to drop. yesterday's highs compared to today's, napa 101. it was yesterday's high they reached 78 degrees, down 23 degrees. san francisco today down 17. san jose you are 98 yesterday. today so far, 86 was your high. down 12 degrees. low clouds and fog really started to race in and temperatures started to come down. currently we are 58 in san francisco. 80 in san rafael. 90 in fairfield and 90 in antioch. livermore at 93 degrees. we have 77 right now in san jose. here is a look at those wind gusts. starting to ramp up. southerly wind at 10 miles an hour half moon bay. we have gusted at 29 at sfo and 23 in concord. all of the fog is pushing inland which is what you would expect

this evening. highlights cooler inland with that fog moving in, cooler inland and a breezy day for your monday. then after that, get ready for some warming as we head into wednesday and thursday. close-up satellite, get a sense of the low clouds and fog racing inland. fog will move in tonight which will mean cooler temperatures. overnight lows the past several nights have been mountain mid to upper 60s. we'll bring them down to mid lo low 50s near the coast and mid to upper 50s interior east bay. here is how we will set the stage for the next day or so. as the low clouds and fog will continue to move inland. it shows all of that moving toward the east bay, even out towards the delta tomorrow. it's definitely going to put a cap on the day time highs. those of you the east bay, temperatures will come down, five as much as ten degrees tomorrow. monday and tuesday, with onshore winds, 70s around the bay and no more triple-digit it's.
