welcome back to "toyota after the game." this is a live look outside of american airlines arena where they are celebrating their first nba title since 2006. that was the shaq-dwayne wade squad. this is lebron's team. as you see, everybody partying out there. let's just hope everybody stays calm and cool and they celebrate in a safe fashion. sometimes things get out of control and you hope everybody maintains their composure. south beach is a great place to party. a lot of spots will be open late tonight. >> oh, boy. >> there will be plenty of locations to enjoy this peacefully. let's talk about one of the key players in tonight's game. mike miller, whoever his chiropractor is, that guy deserves a ring for sure because at times mike miller looked like he could barely walk. he looked like an old man but he hit seven 3s in this game tonight, nate.
9:34 pm
>> he had other games he had at least three but they take him out, he hobbles to the bench but he got quite open shots because they had penetrated doing games two, three and four and they were conscious of him on the inside. they had multiple shooters tonight. but you had to make them and he was stroking them with bad back and all. >> he's one of those pure shooter type guys, larry, every successful team loves to have because if you have a guy like lebron who can create or dwayne wade, you are standing standinge corner and most of the time you will be wide open. >> and the corner is a great place to shoot the three. >> he could hardly walk to the bench. look at him right there. he looks like one of those guys in a game, the game is done and you can't wait to get the ice on. >> as nate alluded to, he was open for those shots. you've got to make them. those are the kind of players that everybody wants on your
9:35 pm
team. even though mike miller has now become a specialist, and that's what he is it, if you have those people and you are going to double-team lebron james in a low post every time he touches it, if the ball swings properly, someone is off in the corner. when nate played there were centers that were really good and they tend today dominate the game and now it's gone the other way. there aren't many centers. the game is being played out on the floor. there's no slicing and cutting and there are some post-ups going on for people like lebron james. it's no longer dribble it down the floor, find your five man and throw it to him on the block. the game has changed that much. and there's no much athleticism going on right now in the nba that it's really fun to watch this stuff. there's so many good college basketball layers and so many good basketball players right now. i don't think there are truly more all-stars. i really don't. >> it's just different. >> but there are more good
9:36 pm
players. oscar robertson, he's a great player, jerry west, nate thurman, bill russell. all the people in the hall of fame are good players. will are just more good basketball players right now and the all-stars are super. >> i'll tell you what, let's not forget this guy once averaged 20 and 20. 20 points, 20 rebounds in a season. there's no centers in the league e might get 30-30. it would be unbelievable. but you are talking about athleticism. let's go live to the podium right now. a disappointed kevin durant is talking with the media. >> john from usa today. fellows, in the end did it come down to defense for miami? is that why they are champion? >> they just found a way to win, man. i don't think our guys came out and didn't want to defend. but, you know, just unfortunate for us and you know how hard these guys work on this team and to get better, how much family watched to try to stop them.
9:37 pm
i don't know what it came down to but they were just the better team. >> kevin? >> their defense is really good, you know. those guys are really good over there. i didn't want to admit it during the series but now that it's over, those guys are really good. last team standing so you have to tip your hat. it's unfortunate for us, man. we wanted it so bad. but we all got to keep our heads high. i'm a positive guy so i will continue to keep my head high. >> mike sure man. russ and kevin, could you guys both describe what was going on on your bench as the game wound down and why you did it? >> just thanking everybody for the support. just going down the line and make sure everybody stayed positive. just making sure everybody, you know, know that we worked hard and we know what this feels like.
9:38 pm
we remember this feeling. have to push everybody in the summer and keep our heads up. >> two disappointed guys, but professionals. unfortunately for the warriors, they will, around for a while. they aren't going anywhere. they will be a very difficult team to contend with in the west and throughout the rest of the nba. i'll tell you what, it's stunning in the way that o k.c. took game one and you thought, okay, miami is in trouble now. and then the whole series really shifted with that second win back at o k.c.. >> well, let me put it this way. they started making a conscience us effort after the first game going inside. you could see it. inside, inside. >> miami, you are talking about? >> miami. attacking the basket and that's all they did and lebron led that charge. and everybody else, let's get close-in shots. tonight was the first time that the outside shots made a real
9:39 pm
difference in the game. >> yep. >> and i think that, you know, maybe o k.c. overreacted tonight, although again you can be wide open and not make them. it's not an easy shot that's correct three-point shot from the corner or anywhere else but they were on their game as far as making them. i think that that really obviously turn it around tonight. >> that's a really good point because the three-pointer was not a weapon that miami had in their arsenal up until this game and then started knocking them down. right now time for our go pro shot of the game. and mike miller, and it's shane battier jump started the heat's 19-1 third quarter run. battier gets the ring that he has long sought and he earns our go pro shot of the game. when "toyota after the game" returns, back to miami for more post-game reaction. plus it's the deal that larry riley will long be remembered for. why he ultimate pulled the trigger for a center in the
9:42 pm
>> we were stuck. you want to be stuck three games below .500 at this time of the year every year? you want to be stuck five games below or something like that? that's where we were. and that's where we are going again the next year if we couldn't do something. >> boy, larry, you look angry there. that was larry back on march 14th when he was still the warriors general manager
9:43 pm
talking about the blockbuster deal he just completed. and you felt it was a no-brainer. did you realize how stern you looked? you were like lecturing the media. you want to be stuck everybody? you don't want to be stuck, do you? [laughter] >> i very seldom lectured the media. >> usually another way around. >> yeah. but the reality was there was some frustration that i have been feeling over the years because we worked so hard to try to get to where we could get a legitimate center. and even though as we talk a few minutes ago, there aren't many. if you have one i still think it gives you an advantage. >> look automen stay's security guards. -- monta's security guards, don't want to mess with them. and andrew, he's had injury problems. >> there's a lot of discussions about andrew's injuries and so on. we felt they were freakish of nature. our medical staff felt good
9:44 pm
about his chances to go on and play this next year without incident. the injury think became less and less the issue. the issue to me was fined a way to get a big man. and frankly, i thought we had gone long enough with steph curry and monta ellis to see if that would work as a guard tandem. i thought if we ever got a center behind them, then we would be in good shape. but it didn't seem like it was going to work that way. we turned in an opposite direction. ins deathly, this was a trade that started a long time ago. he was a player who was coveted. it wasn't something that came up overnight. and then with joe and with bob meyers and travis and so on, our whole front office, we continued to work this kind of thing to try to come up with a center because we felt that that wasly important. as you know, we struck out in free agency, and our whole objective was to change things by trying to get a center, get a presence in the middle. >> right. you offered big money to tyson
9:45 pm
chandler. and jordan of the clappers and they stayed where they were. chandler went to the knicks. maybe this was the way it was meant to be. you have bogut and steph. you aren't so angry, are you? have you calmed down? >> no, i feel great. i feel great about our chances to make a good playoff run and the direction the warriors are going. >> okay. still to come -- >> i would-like to say something else. >> yes. >> i'm happy that deandre jordan is not here. >> he's happy the warriors offered 10 million but he's a limited player. that's proven in the playoffs. >> are you kidding me? >> now nate is angering. we have a lot of anger but that's good sometimes. lebron was angry and he won the title. and coming up how life has changed from larry. going from the gm to the director of scouting. he's watching a zillion college games now. we will talk about that next.
9:48 pm
>> i toll the kids, i was always the kid when i got the ball, i just kind of tucked it and didn't move anywhere and i went from the next year dribble a little bit and shooting, and when i was 8, 9 years old i was a decent player for my age. >> he's turned into a lot more than a decent players. warriors point guard jenkins at a recent scamp for kids. that was at san francisco state. but the camps are going on all over the area this season. they are putting on 18 camps between now and the end of august.
9:49 pm
to register or find a location near you or you want more information go to warriors.com or call. i keep trying to sneak in one of these camps and they yank me out. you are too old. you are too old. welcome back to "toyota after the game." if you missed it earlier. miami beat o k.c. 121-106 and they are nba champions. we used to call you larry riley, the gm, and now you are director of scouting. how has life changed for you? >> i'm already six or eight pounds heavier. >> from all the traveling and the didn'ters on the road? >> i'm eating well. >> you are taking out a lot of perspective players? >> yes. and really, the focus is now on college basketball and the draft. i'll still work with bob and joe and peter have been really good to me, offering me the opportunity to stay on board and do something meaningful. i've never had a bad job in the nba and i've had several of them so i'm enjoying it. >> this is war room video here.
9:50 pm
i don't know if you caught a glimpse of that. were you talking about players specifically? are you allowed to say? or you are not allowed? >> i think that was mark working behind me. there's larry harris and jerry reynolds. those kind of things, you will sit there and you will talk about players and you will take notes and at some other team you will talk about where are we going to eat tonight or something like that. but there's a pretty heavy focus on paying attention to what's going on on the floor. >> you better pay attention because the owner is sitting right next to you. you can't be dozing off. >> that's old footage from last year. >> the draft is one week from tonight. do you know who you are taking? >> no. no. >> if you knew, would you tell me? >> no. >> eric: all right. >> but i will tell you that we don't know. there are a lot of things that can happen. remember the year we drafted steph curry, i didn't know until two days ago it was going to
9:51 pm
happen because it meant somebody had to do something different than what you might expect for that to happen. if that happens again this year. >> so you don't even know what position you are taking? some say three but in our the locked into that? >> not not definitely. i spoke with bob meyers at length today and the floor is still open. >> we have a week to go. he's like the king of disinformation. the old soviet union. even if he told you what it was, it would be disinformation. when "toyota after the game" continues, we are talking nfl? that's right. it's coming to abc7. when you can see the raiders and meeting with payton manning and the broncos. we will tell you about that nex
9:54 pm
we have exciting news. the 49 espineli and raiders are both coming to our station this fall. you san see seattle host the raiders on october 19th and the peyton manning and the broncos will play the raiders. that will be on abc7 as well. that's thursday, december 6th. the nfl season, talk nfl soon. the final thoughts? i know you are happy for lebron. >> i am happy for lebron, and i'm sorry it didn't go seven. i enjoy working with you, larry. >> i know, we wanted two more games. your final thoughts? i know you think dwayne wade is hurt. >> we did say that when we were off the air. it will be interesting to see if there was some recovery period or something. i don't think he played like himself. i think that went on throughout the playoffs. maybe not. but i think something was going on. i think he was less than par. the one thing i take away from this, first off congratulations
9:55 pm
to miami. they earned it. secondly, somebody will blame scotpy brooks. he did a great job of coaching this deep. he has matured them to a degree and brought them along. the next person blamed will be james harden. but both will overcome it. oklahoma city is going to be around a long time. i don't know if it's going to be these two forever, so to speak, but they each have have shot to get back several times. >> and derek will have more credit. one last look back at the nba finals now. have a good night! >> the heat and the thunder. here comes durant to the basket. launches and fires it down! the oklahoma city thunder take game one. the miami heat, the more desperate team tonight after losing game one. >> eric: grant already has a foul. it's 18-2. james on the drive, on the
9:56 pm
pull-up. bank shot. and miami evens up the nba's finals first home loss of the playoffs for the thunder. this crowd is alive. they are set for game three. wade, the drive. gets in the lane. and the runner and a foul! miami will take a two-one lead. can kevin durant and the thunder make the big plays down the stretch and even up the series? he flies in and throws it down. tries the three. bang! on the drive. and he banks it in! what a performance tonight for mario chalmers. the miami heat provides game four. lebron james and the heat one win away from the title they so desperately crave. he throws it to him down the lane. banks it
