biggest supporter, wife dottie. what awaited him near the courtroom was total condemnation. guilty on 45 of 48 charges. >> there's no doubt the jurors believe jerry sandusky is a monster. that's what they said in this verdict. >> the 68-year-old sandusky stood, left hand in the pocket of his brown sport coat. dottie was stoic throughout, shaking her he at times. one ever their adopted children did break down when their father was handcuffed. >> we had an uphill battle. i used the analogy we were attempting to climb mount everest from the bottom of the mountain. well, obviously we didn't make it. >> the judge revoked his bail and remanded the former penn state assistant football coach to the center county correctional facility until formal sentencing. at least one of his victims was in the courtroom friday night surrounded by crying family members as they heard guilty red 45 times.

>> a serial child predator who committed horrific acts upon his victims, causing lifelong and life changing consequences for all of them has been held accountable for his crimes. >> that sentencing will take place in approximately 90 days. the maximum sentence for all of the counts is 442 years. tj widthic, abc news, pennsylvania. >> a headline in san jose maybe headed for a mistrial. this is the one a man is accused of beating up a beast for -- a priest for molesting him as a child. they said they committed misconduct when they told he would lion the stand, meaning he would deny molesting anyone. defense says you can't. >> they said he would probably lie and in fact when they put him on stand he did in fact lie.

he perjured himself. they were aware of that. this is what is known as supporting perjury. >> the district attorney argues the charge is base baseless. the judge will hold a hearing monday when he may declare a mistrial. a purse snatching woman is on the lose this morning. she left the bart station late thursday night. abc7 news reporter tells us her condition was improved. >> it was dark and foggy along bosworth street when a 28-year-old woman walked away from the bart station around midnight and was sir browned two men, one in front, one in back. they wanted her purse. police said they didn't want to give her up. >> the victim fell backwards, striking her head on the pave meant, causing those severe injuries. >> a woman driving by found the victim near the curb and

bleeding from the head. she called 911. during the friday rush hour commuters were just learning of the attack and using it as an unfortunate reminder. >> i think it's a good thing to always bring it to your awareness and keep in mind you need to be always on the lookout. it's unfortunate it happened. i'm sorry to hear she got hurt. >> this woman who didn't want to give her name said she knows to travel with the bare minimum of cash and credit card. >> when i'm not on the phone or anything and walk like i'm an mission and i think that's all you can do. you never know when you are going to get hit. if i had to give it up, i would give it up, but i would hate to. >> a few hours before this incident there was another purse snatching on bosworth a few blocks away. again, there was a struggle but no injuries. police say the two attacks are not related and offer this advice. the things you don't know whether a suspect is armed or not. the best thing to do is to hand

over the property and get the best description possible. >> wow, i just let him have it. my life is more important. they can have the purse. >> all three men ran away with the purse. glen park neighborhood association said these incidents of relatively rare but they are getting the word out and work with residents and police to catch the guys and prevent any other crime. abc7 news. this morning oakland police are asking the public for help in solving two mysterious deaths when two bodies were found in different parts of the city yesterday. the first was a woman's body discovered on an on ramp and the second body was found in east oakland near 66th avenue and coliseum way. around amtrak train conductor spotted the man's body in the canal next to the tracks. investigators have not revealed how the man died. but police confirmed that the woman found near highway 13 was shot. it was unclear whether she was shot along the freeway or her

body was dumped there after she was killed. a skyrocketing number of injury claims is leaving the oakland police department shorthanded. our media partner, the oakland tribune, reports one out of five officers are unable to work the streets. they said there was been mandatory overtime during the occupy oakland protest. here we are three weeks after the election and supporters of proposition ii, the tobacco tax, are now admitting defeat. the measure lost by less than 28,000 votes, just .6% of one percentage point. the tobacco industry spend $49 million to defeat it, and the pro side spent 12 million dollars. it would have imposed a one dollar a pack tax on cigarettes,

and that would go to research. >> they have to predict 90% of kids before they are 18 to be smokers. >> the last thing many of us want to see our sons and daughters smoking at an early age or any age but this is not about that. this is about taxation and regulation. >> the defeat of proposition 29 is the narrowest in state history. this morning at 10:00 a memorial will be dedicated at the newly renovated danville memorial hall to honor local military heroes who gave all, including a marine from danville who died fighting in afghanistan last fall. lance cpl. joshua was just 19 when he was killed in november. the high school graduate's life will be celebrated with a day on the town green, immediately following the dedication ceremony at the vfw post. danville memorial hall is locked on heart value just off highway 680 at the exit in danville.

live doppler 7hd and i was having a hard time pickingping some of the mist and drizzle. certainly we do have some lower clouds out there and those mainly along the peninsula, into the south bay, and we will be looking at them to clear and conditions really improve throughout the afternoon. so that's today. and then in the days ahead le we will look for numbers to get back up to around average. but it will take really right in through next week. so this morning noticing the temperatures on the cooler side up to the north where we've had the clearing for the past couple of hours. 48 in santa rosa. good morning, napa. 51 foran you. look at oakland. a very mild 56 degrees. 54 in los gatos and 56 in san jose and the mist and drizzle has been along the central coast around salinas. this morning we will call it mostly to partly cloudy skies. perhaps a few areas of drizzle further south. and looking for more sunshine

today and tomorrow with maybe a couple degrees of warming tomorrow into the mid-70s. then we will look for the 80s really taking some time to head back here into the middle of next week. so we will look for really average numbers coming back in the days ahead. but no big heat wave and here's why. we have an upper level low that continues to spin off of the oregon border. you see the counter clockwise rotation right here w that it continues to send a pretty good on shore flow our way. that means the sea breeze tense throughout the afternoon, and that cool air. so we will look for that regime not only today and tomorrow, but we talked about a little bit of the mist and drizzle. it pushes to the south and east of the bay. by this afternoon we will look for more sunshine than we had he yesterday ask with the strong mid-june sun we should allow for temperatures to come up with couple degrees. you are not going to escape that sea breeze.

pretty darn cool at our coast. temperatures will be cool in the sierra nevada with breezy conditions and tahoe 60 there. 70 in the southern syria. no more 80s and 90s out there. a big change for this weekend. but for the pride parade up at in the city and nascar up in sonoma, looking pretty clear. low 60s there. 65 in oakland with 69 palo alto, 71 in san jose. so mild in our inland valleys but it will take time to get to that 74 in gilroy. a little mist and drizzle along the central coast. here's the look ahead. you notice mid-70s for the warmest inland valleys and the warming trend doesn't get underway until tuesday and staying rather benign there right in through the end of next week. not bad. a little cool this weekend. >> lisa, thanks a lot. in sports this afternoon at 4:15 the bay bridge series continues at the oakland coliseum with madison bumgarner taking on tyson ross. last night the giants were trying to beat the a's in

>> topping our news this half-hour and new this morning president obama is pressing congress this weekend to reach agreement on two things. a transportation bill to repair the nation's crumbling roads and a plan to prevent student loan rates from doubling. congressional neglectators are working on a deal to keep somewhere its on subsidized student loans from doubling come july 1st. that's when the 3.4% rate would balloon to 6.8% if they don't renew the bill that lowered rates. >> we are eight days away from 7.5 million students seeing their lone rates double because congress hasn't act today stop it. this makes no sense. we know one of the most important things we can do for our economy is to make sure all americans get the best education possible. >> senate a's from both parties say they are moving toward a deal how to play the lone program $6 billion price tag.

professional neglectators are working lou the weekend also to bring a transportation bill to a vote sometimes next week. there's a widening gap teen what the state prom thed their public employees in pension and what the state is actually able to afford. a pew center study is laying out the staggering numbers. nannette miranda reports. >> when you combine state and local government, the pew center for the state estimates california's public pension system's obligations had $112 billion in unfunded liabilities in 2010. add in retiree health costs, the total jumps to nearly $200 billion. >> california is in serious trouble. >> pension reformers have been sounding the alarm for years that retirement costs will drain, maybe even bankrupt budgets. they say state leaders have made only modest changes because public employee unions are too powerful. what employee contributions or investment gains can't pay for, taxpayers make up the shortfall.

>> the hole in the budget that is being caused by feeding this pension beast are eating up all the other money we need for the programs we value like schools and transportation and housing and safety net programs. >> pension supporters, though, point out the pew center's numbers are two years old; that the stock market has done better since then. a pension fund is considered healthy if unfunded liabilities are kept to 20% or less. >> there's actually good news in the report in stating that california has gone from a funding ratio of somewhere around 60, 62% potassium 70, 78% for most their pension funds. we are going the right direction. >> let's move forward with pension reforms. >> republicans tried to bring governor brown's pension reform package to a floor vote this week but the democratic majority sets the timetable. >> you had an opportunity to bring it out here, to debate it, to do up and down and what did you say? no. >> come on. you want to be part of the

saving lives but not quite like they did in san jose last week. karina rusk shows us why two men were recognized yesterday for their heroic efforts. >> it was an ordinary shift until he noticed something unusual. >> this area here we saw a little smoke coming from the backyard. >> the rural metro ambulance emt made a u-turn and called in a possible fire. his paramedic partner, shawn ellis, jumped into action. >> instinctively just two kicks i got into the said door here. >> upstairs in this san jose house was a sleeping 17-year-old. >> he just came in my room and he was like ma'am your house is on fire. and that's when i just got scared and i was like is this for real? am i dreaming kind of? >> the fire was spreading quickly. >> the flames were flickering out ever the doorway and the thick black smoke began to just completely fill the whole hallway and at that time i just

>> the department of veteran affairs says troops returning from iraq and afghanistan are going to get everything they need. yesterday the va cut the ribbon on a new mental health center in palo alto. abc7 news reporter mark matthews talk with an iraq veteran who was a guest of honor. >> christopher stood next to the secretary of health as he cut the ribbon on the new $54 million, 80-bed mental health center. he took his turn at the podium along with a congresswoman and zo lofgren. >> most veterans want to actually accept help even if

they know they need it, and at least here the veterans won't feel like they are imprisoned or something. >> his blunt assessment among all the other thank you speeches seemed a little off kilter but christopher knows what he's talking about. just last week he was a patient in the old va mental health center. >> i was not going outside. i was just staying at my home. i won talk to anybody. >> when he came home from two and a half years of combat, he said he began to withdraw. his family convinced him to get help but in the old v.a. center it felled like a lockup. >> there was only three times we could go out for the day for about a half-hour. >> the army mechanic walked me around the new building, pointing out the outdoor spaces, the windows, the furniture. uphold centered chairs rather than plastic windows instead of blank walls. >> just being able to look out whenever you need to, not feeling like you are trapped in

really. the golden gate bridge obviously wide open for traffic and a very nice sunrise coming on. a retailer advertised a water heater on sale but it turns out the model is band by air pollution laws. the store told the customer he couldn't get the water heater or the sale price. michael finney stepped in to help. >> i'm looking at an advertisement that says we have this for sale. when i got there they didn't. >> william of danville was a little ticked off. he had seen this sears ad in the almost paper offering a water heater for $445. >> it was the 40-gallon, nine year, just exactly what i was looking for. when i phoned them up, i told them that i had seen the ad and the fellow said yep, we've got them. he drove to sears. the clerk pulled out the water heater. william pulled out his wallet and then the problem. >> he rang it all up and the amount that he came up with was way more than the ties the price. >> about $150 more so william

pointed to the newspaper ad. the clerk looked up the model number and said the heater in the ad is illegal in california. >> i'm looking at the flyer. it says you have had. you called and you said you had it. i came down and now you say you can't sell it to me because it isn't allowed in california. >> william said it seemed unfair to ties a product that can't en sold. sears said it was a national ad, not a local ad, and it wouldn't give him another model at the same price. >> i thought about it for a while and i thought maybe finney can help me. >> so we checked it out. sure enough, there are pollution standards for water heaters in california similar to those for cars and factories. near the bay area the air quality management district has regulation 9. it bans the sale of water heaters that emit too much nitrogen oxide, a gas linked to acid rain and global warming. sears said the heater in the ad doesn't meet those standards.

so we asked why was it offered on sale in sears said we want to apologize for any inconvenience caused to him as a result of our water heater ad. the ad's disclaimer was inadvertently omitted, causing the confusion for the customer. sears did sell william this low emotion 40-gallon water heater for just $445, the same price as the one in the ad. >> that's what we were looking for, so everything worked out great. >> abc7's legal analyst dean johnson said retailers generally are not obligated to give customers a sale price that's offered due to a mistake in the advertisement. in this case omitting that disclaimer. we thank sears for stepping up and offering that sales price. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. well, stern grove here in san francisco begins it's 75th season of free outdoor customer concerts tomorrow. the grove at 19th avenue and

side. outside right now we are looking at a pretty shot from our sutro camera. you can see it's already date. we are looking at the low fog and clouds. a nice, bright start to the day whereas yesterday we had the economist drizzle not only in the morning hours but throughout much of the day. and 7hd, a little bit in the way of low cloudiness burks we aren't picking up much of anything. so we are starting out a little better. so as a result this afternoon we will have milder conditions with more sunshine out there. but it looks like we are going to have to wait several days to warm up. so we will range once again probably about five to eight degrees below average. upper 40s where we've had the clear skies for the past several hours. the wind is pretty brisk along the coast and that will be an issue once again. so we will look for that onshore flow to continue throughout the day today. 56 in oakland, 54 in fremont with 53 in concord.

so partly cloudy skies, not only the north bay but we have clear condition necessary concord, around mountain view and a little bit more cloud cover holding on to the central coast this morning. we will take a little bit more time for the clearing to get underway here. otherwise sunnier days for this weekend and it looks like tomorrow a couple degrees warmer than today. so we are getting there but, boy, it's going to take the next three or four days before a warmer pattern. and our temperatures will settle in to where we should be for this time of year. so our satellite and radar composite and this time the water vapor per imagery really defines the upper level low. you see the counter clockwise spin to it. that's really allowed for the on shore flow to stay with us, the marine layer to stay intact and the cool sea breezes throughout the afternoon. so it will be another cool day today. it's not until this lifts out and moves to the north and east of us that a ridge of high pressure will build in here and once that happens we will get

back to our 80s. but between now and then we are watching for this cold front to slide on out of here and through about the 10:00, 11:00 hour mostly sunny conditions and temperatures in the 60s. it's going to take until about 3:00 when we top out into the low 70s in our warmest inland valleys. so statewide, yes, temperatures really cool from sacramento to fresno. it's got the fair today in almeda. the 100th fair there for the celebrations with temperatures only in the low 70s. up in sonoma, nascar. 70 later on this afternoon. 67 san mateo. and in the city for the pride festivities, in the low 60s. it will be sunny there. 71 in san jose with morgue hill coming in at 73. hollister just about 70 and clouds throughout the next couple of hours there. the look ahead, not much of a change tomorrow or monday. its the middle of next week we will see highs back in the

company. the two bears appear to be fight to go establish templet they were really going at it. but neither of them got hurt. eventually they fell over a air conditioner, stared at each for a while and walked away in the woods for a while. no harm, no foul. and the review ever the 75th anniversary festivities makes it official, it was spectacular. they estimate some 75,000 people watch the fireworks show back on may 27th. the conservancy spokesman said that estimate includes people in their homes watching from windows, people on stairways, rooftops, people watching from different counties, and thousands watched from crissy field, and even counts to 200,000 hits on the fireworks video posted on the event's website. i think that included everybody. i don't know if they needed to review it to say it was spectacular. obviously it was. well, coming up at six, jair
