coast. visibility good. we will look at temperatures cooler than yesterday, as much as two to three degrees cooler from mountain view and concord. this morning heading on out, clear and cool, numbers in the 40s and 50s with mostly clear conditions and by noontime not lot of change. we will see numbers approaching 60 degrees in the inner valleys and today mid-70s. terry. >> thanks very much. the 42nd annual san francisco pride festivities are in full swing. take a look at the parade route. it ends at civic center where the party continues all night long. last night tens of thousands of people poured into the castro district for a street festival. sergio romo quintana looks at what has changed and what has stayed the same. >> among the usual are the usual fights. there are the sisters of perpetual indulgence in full

a man can believe what happened in front his own home even though he recorded it on his surveillance camera. the video that could have end his life. >> when eric gilbert pulled into his driveway before 3:00 a.m. friday this is how he was greeted. a hooded man pointing a gun at him. >> i was horrified. i thought the guy was going to kill me. he put it directly in my face. i complied, gave him my wallet and he still, still pulled the trigger. >> for whatever reason the gun never fired. >> i looked up. the guy was right there with a gun in my face. >> what did he say? >> he just said basically brace yourself, give me everything you have, and i complied. i gave him my wallet and i gave him my wallet, he pulled the trigger and it locked up and clicked. >> gilbert said the gunman still wasn't satisfied.

>> walked over the truck. gave him my hat on the ashtray, he wasn't satisfied. threw it down and he mentioned he was from a city called oakland and he wanted more. >> the ordeal ends when the armed robber tried and failed to get into the house. >> he again squeezed the trigger, and at that point i put the key into the lock trying to get into the door and he squeezed the trigger again and he opened the door, i ran in and locked the door. >> he thinks the gunman followed him home in a white honda accord. it was only about a month ago he installed surveillance outside his home for safety and peace of mind. he never imagined they would capture him becoming a victim. >> not in a million years. you always think it's going to be the other person. never you. >> the homeowner says he wanted to tell his story on television to get the word out that things like this can seemingly happen to anyone and that people should be aware of their surroundings. in antioch, abc7 news. a pregnant woman is recovering from morning from a

beating while traveling on bart, and she said there were a lot of people there but no one tried to help her. 26-year-old emma has a black eye and bruises while she said a man attacked her while traveling home from concord. she said the man beat her while the woman tried to grab her i-phone and she said at least 15 people food by and watched. >> people will be there, they will see you in a public area. they see you, but they wouldn't get your back. they just going to watch you until that person kills you or something. >> well, finally someone did step up and pulled her into another car. bart police say passengers claim they tried to help her, but backed off when the male suspect reached into his waistband suggesting perhaps he had a weapon. the suspects were caught at the bay point station. the chp has alerted san francisco police to watch for a car they believe was involved in a fatal hit-and-run

near mountain view. they say a white toyota camry caused this car to swerve off an off-ramp on north bound 85. the driver of the audi, a female mountain view resident in her 20s, drove into a tree and died at the scene. the license plate of the suspect vehicle is 5jmn316. a sacramento man is back home this morning after his 50-foot boat was struck by a whale during a sailing trip off the western coach of mexico. he was on the final leg of course his trip from the east coast to emeryville when it happened last tuesday. of the 67-year-old retired high school teacher said the whale seemed to come up out of nowhere, hit his boat and sent him nearly flying overboard. >> i didn't like the idea of drowning. i accepted the fact that this is not going to -- it is not going to work. >> well, five hours after the accident young was rescued from his sinking boat by a greater which went off course to help him out and save his life.

a union for thousands of state workers announced a deal that includes salary cuts for their members. it represented employees represented by the largest state union. under the deal they will see their salaries reduced by about 4.5% for about a year starting july 1st. in addition they will be able to take an additional 8 hours off per month. coming up next, details about presidentialal candidate mitt romney's being weekend retreat to raise money for his

their new president will be. let's look at a picture downtown cairo. police are taking to the streets ahead of the announcement of the election results. they are announced three days later than planned. that's why there's such a build one. uncertainty has been driving tens of thousands of people back to the square. all signs point to the victory by the muslim brotherhood. but both sides are there at the square right now. this morning republican presidential candidate mitt romney is at a private retreat in utah where much of the talk is about campaign money. romney is hosting a gathering with gop fundraisers, donors and possible vice presidential candidates. not all of them, but some of them. the l.a. times reports his campaign is counting on supporters giving $500 million out of their $800 million fundraising goal. he's not giving the names of the

people, but one is suggesting an enthusiastic mode. >> i'm going to do everything i can. bundle every penny. >> they said romney has a chance equal or maybe better president obama when it comes to fundraising. coming up at 8:00 on abc7 a showdown over the fast and furious scandal. the man leading the charge faces tough questions. that's on george stephanopoulos coming up at 8:00 on abc7. in oakland the battle to stop four schools from closing tense this morning. parents and other protesters have been camped out at lakeview elementary school for more than a week. lisa explains why the district refuses to budge. >> the school board shut down five schools and foreclosed on 1,000 of our children. >> hundreds gathered at the plaza to demand change and then

they marched. [chanting] >> parents, teachers, students and people who are simply concerned with the direction of education united. they want the oakland unified school district to reopen five elementary schools. the board voted to close them. the outrage has prompt add sit-in at lakeview elementary where parents and children set up tents and have been camping out since last friday. on monday police posted warning signs ordering protest he is to leave. they refuse to budge. >> the board needs to revote and be hero instead of standing in our way so we can improve public education. >> as for revisiting the school closure discussion, that's a decision the board with have to make but i think it's extremely unlikely. >> the district insists white now there are way too many schools in a city of this size and student enroll meant is dropping. officials say consolidating will

make the school system for efficient and it will save the district $5.7 million. >> could we keep these schools open if we wanted to keep limping along the same way we have or only make small incremental changes, probably, but that won't get the district to be where we need to go. >> they set it up to fail. >> many here insist the direct is making matters worse. they are sure the change in schools will cause confusion and only add to problems. >> their attendance will go down because it's too far away. they are not connected to the school, they aren't connected to the teachers. they are going to get lost. >> in the meantime several protesters have gotten into the school and are offering to teach free summer school classes to children who used to attend lakeview elementary. in oakland, abc7 news. this morning roadwork has shut down a portion of the southbound lanes of interstate 680 in contra costa county.

>> welcome back. 5:18 on a sunday morning. you are looking at a live picture ever the golden gate bridge and, yes, it is clear out there. i don't see any fog, as we often do this time of day, especially in the summer. we are going to find out from lisa argen exactly how warm it is going to get. we have, what, a million people coming from the pride parade, the giants. a big forecast on the way. in northern colorado hot, dry weather and gusty winds are forcing firefighters to retreat. the wildfire burning near for

the collins has scorched nearly 118 square miles and destroyed 191 homes. fire crews assigned to protect homes were also forced to leave their post. and there is also one near colorado springs where more than 1,000 homes were evacuated because of a 2,000-acre wildfire that flared up again yesterday. in utah evacuation orders have been lifted tore more than 2300 wildfire evacuees. they were forced to flee their homes in eagle springs but were allowed to return home when the winds shifted and blew the fire in another direction. the wildfire now 30% contained. >> this morning forecasters expect tropical storm debbie to strengthen as it heads toward the texas coast. however, landfall is not imminent. beach goers in galveston right now are concerned more with high surf causing dangerous conditions there. forecasters say debbie could have near hurricane force winds the next few days.

right now the topped sustained winds about 50 miles an hour. getting back to the fire danger there, a fire breaks out in mill valley yesterday on a hillside, dry grass, heading i am the hillside, and if the winds were blowing in a different direction, that could have been something with the stand of eucalyptus trees at the top of the hill. >> not good. it is certainly cool out there. numbers are in the 4s and as we head outside from our high definition emeryville camera, still you can see pretty light out there. the sun coming up in another 25 minutes or so. we will look for plenty of sun today. nice and quiet really. no low clouds to speak of. we do have still that area of low pressure influencing us, bringing us schooler than average highs today. but right now, boy, a little cool out there for san rafael, 46. 44 in santa rosa with mid-40s on the coast. 55 in oakland. one of the warmer locations.

and 51 in livermore. so we are looking at mostly clear and certainly cool conditions. sunny afternoon the next couple of days. we will look for that very modest warmup to come in by about tuesday, wednesday. and it's not going to take us into above normal readings. we will barely reach around where we should be this time of year, which will be a few 80s in our inland valleys. here's the setup. once again, the area of low pressure sitting off the coast of oregon. with that counter clockwise spin it really has mixed out that marine layer. the air is so cool. we aren't looking at any inversion. it will be back once this lifts on out tomorrow. so today, though, very little change. it will continue to bring in that sea breeze and allow the temperatures to just warm to where we were yesterday, mainly 60s and 70 #*s. today across the state we will warm up to about 80 in

sacramento, 87 in fresno. mid-60s, so a little warm territory east of us. 69 in yosemite. but still the 60s along the coast. and for the bay today, if you are headed out into the city, well, the pride parade, temperatures starting out in the upper 50s. then 60 by the afternoon. certainly cool but plenty of sunshine. it should be a beautiful afternoon. if you are headed up to the north around nascar and sonoma county, wow, normally we would have some very warm temperatures but from the 50s early on to the upper 60s to low 60s. a little bat of a breeze kicking up throughout the afternoon. back home today numbers in the south bay should be pretty pleasant with 72 campbell, 71 cupertino. but we should at least see another 8 or 9 degrees of warmth in the south bay. not happening today or tomorrow. 69 redwood city. the city coming in about the same, low 60s and under a mostly sunny sky. 70 in novato. we talk about the cooler numbers

up in sonoma. near east bay more mid-60s for the afternoon. and by the fair, boy, what a day, 72 in danville. no heat to talk about. just a pleasant, mild afternoon from salinas to hollister. 72 there. and a look ahead. so from yesterday to today, just, you know, know discern i believe difference but we don't have the clouds. we had a few more clouds yesterday morning. notice the modest warmup middle of the week, mid-80s, 60s at the coast. very little going on. >> you are talking about right around 60 degrees for the pride parade? >> yeah. >> i don't think it's going to do any good to tell some of those revelers to dress warmly because they aren't going to. deficit. here's the highlights from sports. >> good morning. on friday the giants staged a ninth inning rally to get by the a's. last night oakland tried to return the favor. let's go to the coliseum where madison bumgarner gotta a shaky start for san francisco. in the first josh reddick goes deep with a man on. the team leading 17th homer of the season makes it 2-0. giants come back. pablo sandoval's base hit gets by jonny gomes and allows posey to score from first. san francisco would tie the game at two. the a's retook the lead. gomes helps make up for his error the solo shot off garner. he was 4-2. the wheels would come off for oakland in the fifth. the downedder goes past months, who slips. two runs score. moss had two errors on that play, three in the inning. this two run blast made it 6-4. giants scored three more in the seventh. two on this shot by posey. san francisco led-4 going to the bottom of the ninth.

>> tomorrow our news this half-hour sometime this week or next state lawmakers will vote on committing $6 billion to commit on building the high-speed rail project. it is expected to easily pass the assembly but face as different vote in the senate. gov. jerry brown is seeking approval to build 130 miles of track from bakersfield to

modera. but it could end up being to train to no where. they are trying to get initial funds to high ridership areas such as the bay area or los angeles. the 49ers in the city of santa clara will huddle this week to figure out what to do now that st. claire has pulled back $30 million from the team's stadium project. our media partner reports the county property tax board voted friday to spend the money on schools instead, and found a loophole in the law that lets them do it. changes in reinvolvement funding now give counties total control over how that money is spent. the money amounts to less than 3% of the total cost of budding the stadium. county leaders expect the 49ers to absorb the lost and many expect lots of lawsuits. an 11-year-old florida boy kept his school when three people broke into his house while he was home alone. he's being called a hero after alerting police by calling 911. >> what did they yell?

>> i don't know. i'm in my room under my bed. >> do you know how he got into the house? >> he broke the glass. >> so that knows in the background? >> i'm trying to hide. >> wow. the thieves tossed a hammer through a window. they ransacked the house, taking jewelry and tearing up the boy's school certificates. police arrived quickly and pull the boy and his dog to safety. three teenagers were taken into custody. all the jewelry was recovered. boating season is now in full swing at lake tahoe. extra safeguards are in place to make sure invasive species don't get into the lake but some unwanted are creatures are already there. the good news, experiments on getting rid of at least one harmful species appear to be paying off. here's assignment 7 report. >> you might call this the unwelcome matt. this uc davis video shows researchers spreading sheets of rubber on the bottom of the lake tahoe. the rubber is intended to

smother an invasive species call the asian clam. >> this is the material that blocks the oxygen and the clams are underneath it. >> they are tiny but they have the potential to cause big problems. so a multi-agency task force is trying to control the clams before it's too late. they took an abc7 news crew out on the lake to show us how it's going. in some areas the clams are easily visible through a scope. >> every white dot we are looking at here is a dead clamshell. there are a lot more live ones underneath. >> we sped up the video so you can see how the clams bury themselves in the sand. there they go. they were first discovered in tahoe ten years ago and they spread fast. >> these guys can grow faster and more efficiently than the native clams. >> the clams encourage algae, by clouds the waters. their shells are sharp and makes beaches dangerous for the feet. but the most serious threat may be that the clams change the

water chemistry so it's easier for other, even more harmful species to survive. ted is with the tahoe regional planning agency. >> the combined effects on the effects on lake tahoe could be as much at $22 million a year in lost property values, increased maintenance of boat and waterin' takes. >> this shows how thick the infestation is in some spots receipt now. so far the clams are mostly in the southeastern part of the lake. but a small colony is beginning to grow at the mouth of emerald bay. emerald bay is one of the most popular and beautiful parts of lake tahoe and it is the site of a pilot project that started a year ago. divers put down 2,000 square feet of those rubber mats that we showed you earlier. >> it's a lot of work down there. these rubber mats are heavy and they have a lot of rebar on them to keep them in place because there's a lot of currents that flow back and forth across the bottom of tahoe. >> we were there as researchers pulled the entire experiment out of the water piece by piece.

the divers also took clam samples to send to a lab for analysis. after a few weeks the news is good. >> it was very effective. >> the mats killed about 80% of the clams by cutting off their oxygen. that result, combined with earlier research, is leading the team to recommend a much larger project, putting temporary rubber mats on five acres of emerald bay. it would cost about $800,000. >> the invasive species team is reminding anyone who wants to bring a boat to lake tahoe that it must be inspected before it goes into the water and the best way to keep an invasive species from getting into the lake to make sure your boat is clean, drained and dry when you arrive. dan ashley, abc67 news. >> coming up next, texting while driving. there are some people who should know better, but the law is not entirely clear on the subject. we will show you. here's a live look from the roof cam at the abc7 news studio. looking out at the bay bridge. lisa will be along shortly with

>> in morning a lesson for us all. had has to do with the handsfree cell phone law and just exactly what you are and are not allowed to do with your phone while behind the wheel. here's abc7 news reporter heather ishimaru. >> the state transportation commission official lucy dunn was pulled over in southern california when a police officer was thought she was texting at a red light. instead she was checking to make sure her smartphone is charging. she explained that's illegal too but let her out of the ticket if she would agree to post her experience and the lesson learned on facebook where she has 1300 friends. the officer suspected dunn isn't the only one who didn't realize in the eyes of the law, checking for charging may as well be

more than a million cases of skin cancer every year in the u.s. you clearly need to wear that sunscreen. but you might have a tougher time picking out exactly which one you should be using. here's 7 on your side's michael finney with results of a recent test of the top-selling brands. >> whether you are relaxing on the beach or enjoying the waves, it's critically important to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun. consumer reports have tested 18 sunscreens, mostly sprays and lotions. from names like banana boat and copper tone to neutrogena and avena. >> we check to see how they protect against two types of radiation, uvb which causes sunburn and ava which penetrates deeper and ages the kin. >> both types contribute to skin cancer. it's important to use a sunscreen that tests against both. to test they apply sunscreen to

panelists' back anden expos them to the rays. they also check water resistance. panelists sit in water up to 10 minutes, depending on the product's claim. >> we also performed a new critical wave run test mandated by the fda which determines it a sunscreen concerns a sufficient level of uva protection. >> two studies show both failed the test. banana boat kids and albert botanica. but for fun in the sun without the worry, consumer reports found two very good inexpensive sunscreens. no ad spf45 and walgreens sunscreen sport spf50. both rated very good against uva and excellent against uvb radiation, making them a great option for your next day at the beach. the fda is currently investigating trayon sunscreen which inhaling the spray pose as danger. they said it's best to avoid

using sprays on children and never spray directly on to your face. instead, spray into your hands and then rub the sunscreen on to your face. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. let's talk about sun. now that we've talk about sun protection. how much are we going to get together and how warm is it going to get? >> we do have some sun out there. also fog is sneaking around the bay but not as much as yesterday. it looks pretty good out there. boy, is it cold. >> some serious sneaking going on there. >> yeah, it's just in spots. 5:499 official sunrise, setting at 8:46. right now a light west wind out of the northwest, a breeze. then it will be increasing throughout the day. the changes from yesterday to today, very, very subtle. live doppler 7 hd right now we are looking at a live sweep on top of mount saint helena, and an unseasonably cool weather system to the north of us allowed for some rain yesterday around mount shasta. but really for most areas around the bay, just cooler than

average. some of those puffy, cumulus clouds the further north you went yesterday. 44 santa rosa. and mid-50s from san carlos to oakland this morning. 47 in los gatos with half moon bay. good visibility but a little bit of fog here and there. but not that much. the atmosphere is pretty cool this morning. that has mixed out our inversion. we will see more sunshine in the afternoon. but will temperatures recover? not so much today. in fact, normally we have the trend from about 60 to about the mid-80s and much more narrow the temperature spread. more 60s and 70s around the bay. a warmer pattern. well, we have to wait until this little pesky trough moves on out. here it is. yesterday provided the showers. it continues to sit to the north and west of us. and with it ushering in the cool air and the breezes throughout the afternoon. but really cleaning out the atmosphere. so not much in the way of change today. it doesn't make much of a move. it's going to be tomorrow when

it begins to lift on out. and still, tomorrow not featuring much in the way of change either. we have to get on the back side of it before a stronger ridge builds on in. but to the east of us, a little bit more warmth. 80 in sacramento, 87 fresno with more sun right through southern california. but back home we are going to be looking at temperatures today on the cool side. a little pit of patchy fog. upper 50s for the morning hours in the city. then low 60s should do it right on through the afternoon. so a cool one, normally about 67 today. up in the north bay you should see plenty of mid-80s. a lot like yesterday with more sunshine. maybe a cloud here and there. but by the afternoon, three, four o'clock, we are talking low 70s and a little bit of a breeze out there. back home temperatures here in the low 70s from milpitas to los gatos today and on the peninsula, no 80s, just 69 in redwood city with 63 downtown. more sun from the richmond to the sunset district.
