i turned around and saw -- >> a shark in the water off maui. one beach is closed after an attack on a bay area girl. i'm carolyn johnson. >> dan: a bay area teenager bitten while on vacation with her family. it happened off resort on the island of maui. >> this was supposed to be relaxing vacation. tonight their 16-year-old daughter is nursing a shark bite wound. >> the waters went from a scene from tropical paradise to a medical emergency when a shark

grabbed a leg of a livermore girl. wound was three to five inch bite on her left calf. it happened when she was sitting in water at a resort. a different girl said she saw a shark off the beach the night before. >> i turned around and saw it. and mom said shark. so i got off the beach as fast as i could. >> officials think it was a reef shark that attacked the girl. five to six feet long. the sharks often stay in shallow water. >> it was about five feet in length. it was kind of medium. it was about foot or two away from me. that is why i ran really fast. >> fire crews patched her wound at the beach and family took the girl to get medical treatment. warning signs went up as

beachgoers on land and shoreline. >> it's about 8:00 p.m. in hawaii. they were going close it until sun set and officials will decide what to do tomorrow. it is official, city of stockton is the largest city in the nation to file for bankruptcy. it's 80 miles east of san francisco. within the last half-hour the council voted to declare chapter 9. tonight. stockton city manager had harsh words for the council. here is the latest. >> reporter: ten years ago. property values in stockton had quadrupled, the city was rolling in the dough and they were spending a lot. real estate bubble burst. now stockton is unable to pay $700 million in debt. >> all the prayers in the world

did not prevent stockton becoming the largest u.s. city to file for bankruptcy. >> the world is watching so they can see we are victims of a society that is failing us. >> citizens crammed into the city council chambers because brand-new city hall and garages have been repossessed. new marina could be next. >> they leveraged themselves and spent money that they were betting they would have. you just don't do that. >> city manager bob day says it's going to take more cuts to public safety even though the city has cut its police force by 25% and the fire department by 30%. he says retirees who were promised lifetime medical benefits may have to suffer next. >> you guys created this problem. from 2002 to now, it got bad. did you guys ever assume you had

to look into this? did you not know it wasn't funded? >> unfortunately it is the equivalent your arm to save the rest of body. >> unlike the city of vallejo that emerged from bankruptcy this year the forecast for stockton is not as optimistic. >> we are still looking at reduction in property taxes. >> it's going to take years and years because of the number of foreclosed homes. >> what happened liability has grown and grown. we set aside nothing. >> aside from improving chapter nine bankruptcy the city approved a new budget. there will be cuts in pay for all city employees. the promise of lifetime medical benefits for all retirees will be taken away next year.

>> dan: developing news in colorado, where an intense fire is consuming homes. winds pushed these flames into neighborhoods near colorado springs forcing more than 30,000 people to flee from their houses wildfire is threatening the air force academy there. the fire begin saturday and just more than 5% contained. fire officials are calling this fire an epic proportions. a second wild fire that has been burning since june 9:00 9 has charred 257 homes in colorado. >> arson investigators are looking into a series of officials that burned overnight. altogether there were three of them that ignited within 30 minutes of one another. lisa amin gulezian is live in san jose for us. >> we are here at blossom hill in south san jose, this is the scene of the third fire crews

had to attack. take a look behind me, a lot of debris left from the fire which started right behind that wooden fence. >> this is video taken moments after firefighters arrived on the drive. already the were fighting their third fire in 30 minutes. >> we are understaffed. >> 75 of the departments 200 firefighters were responding to these fires. first call came in at 10:00. this fire started in the kitchen but just 18 minutes into fighting this, a call for another fire came on another drive. >> the window and all of a sudden there was flames. there was fire. i got scared. my first instinct was to get my kids. >> the fire started steps from the condo at recycling bin that

spread to the gas and electric meters. >> when we were over there a lot of fires started. >> a few yards away, a third fire started. firefighters scrambled to this one. san jose didn't have enough battalion chiefs manning all three fires and needed to call one in. once at coit drive they found a similar scene. >> i heard a blow up. >> the arson team is investigating both theirs at blossom hill estates. they are shopping short of calling them suspicious but needs don't need a label. they just know they are worried. >> it's not safe anymore. it's quite disturbing. >> because of all three fires, 22 people including eight children have been displaced. the red cross has put them up at local hotels.

there is some closure tonight for san bruno firestorm victims. pg&e begin plugging the pipe ruptured and exploded when neighbors called 911. it crusade catastrophic fireball and destroyed dozens of homes. it turned out so many violations the utility faces find up to to millions of dollars. >> we know we have a lot of work to do. >> pg&e is testing all the major gas transmission lines across the bay area. it expects to finish fueling the pipe in san bruno by the end of the week. >> in orinda, a murder, woman found dead in a home and accused killer is under arrest. 911 call came shortly before

12:30 calling to report a murder. they found the woman dead on the kitchen own floor. investigators say the victim's house mate confessed to the killing the result of some kind of domestic disputed. woman's death is first homicide in on orinda in ten years. meantime, san francisco police are searching for gunman after a midday shooting in the mission district. a man was shot at least twice after three this afternoon. it happened near harrison and 24th street. people that work in the area say it's rare that crimes like this happen curing the daytime hours. they believe the victim in this case was targeted. >> in alameda county judge issued a ruling allowing the names of the u.c. davis police officers who pepper-sprayed protestors to be made public. there were videotape of seated protestors that refused orders to discuss fwurs. u.c. police officers tried to keep them off there because of possible harassment.
