good wednesday morning, everybody. the devastating wildfires in the west are now giving the u.s. air force a fight on the ground. >> the air force academy is shutting down today as the huge waldo canyon fire near colorado springs bears down on the sprawling campus, forcing cadets to flee. >> it is one of almost three dozen major fires stretching from montana to arizona, fuelled by record heat and some pretty wild winds. >> i ran over as fast as i could. it was scary. there's no other word. i mean, we're petrified over here. >> reporter: these pictures show the colorado springs wildfire, a blaze that is called a firestorm of eni think proportions. winds up to 65 miles an hour blew the fire over containment line, forcing the evacuations of 42,000 people including at the air force academy where 700 cadets and personnel were told to leave.

>> my dad said there were flames a block away from your house. >> reporter: preevacuation notices were sent to the residents. the officials say the fire started out on six acres and grew. a week of excruciating 100 degree temperatures is complicating it on the front line. >> we don't see anything in the immediate weather forecast that will relieve that. >> reporter: fighting the fires has already cost $30 million. by one estimate the tourism industry is losing $1 million a day as some state parks have been forced to close. in utah, a burning wildfire forced authorities to shut down part of the main traffic artery in the central part of the state. at least one person was found dead in an evacuated area. it's a different kind of misery in florida where debby is triggering destructive floods for the fifth straight day. >> debby actually made landfall

yesterday and then quickly weakened from a tropical storm to a depression. >> reporter: people wading through water so deep the pool now a pond. floodwaters along at least a 50-mile stretch of i-10 have caused authorities to close portions of one of florida's main highways. in jacksonville, heavy rains closed roads and made driving barely manageable. people trying to make it through and the water keeps rising. dennis duke said his family is leaving their beloved home, the sandbags doing little to hold back the water. >> come on, it will be fine. >> reporter: locals said there's one more hidden danger in debby. inside these floodwaters extra creatures because of the flooding including snakes and fire ands. fair warning.

scheduled for this week. and stockton, california, will become the biggest u.s. city to ever declare bankruptcy. officials say they were up able to roa -- unable to reach an agreement with the creditors. in northern ireland, a controversial meeting today during an historic visit by queen elizabeth. she is meeting with and shaking the hand of a man named martin mcginness. he's the top catholic in the unity government and a former top commander of the irish republican army which fought against british rule. writer and filmmaker nora ephron has died here in new york after a battle with leukemia. she was best known for her romantic comedies, a writer who understood with humor and wisdom the transaction of love. there was "when harry met

welcome back, everyone. our thirst for middle east oil may be cut in half by the end of the decade, thanks to new sources like shale oil and less demand. energy analysts say that we may not need any middle east oil by 2035. crude oil prices are around $79 a barrel these days which is far below this year's peak. auto dealers are having the best june in five years, almost 20% more in sales than a year ago. some of that is because japanese automakers are back in business after last year's earthquake and devastating tsunami. however, sales are down 7% from last month, thanks to continuing uncertainty about the economy. and general motors hoping to spark its own sales later this summer with its first minicar. the chevy spark is being sold in other countries. gm is targeting the four-seater

and urban marketers and young drivers. it will be a quote fun product. well, overseas markets are up on cautious optimism about this year's european summit. the nikkei average picked up 66.5 points today. and in london, the ftse opening a shade lower. on wall street, the dow rose 32 points yesterday and the nasdaq index gaining 18. well, apple has won a round in the tablet wars. overnight, a judge ordered a halt to samsung gallery 10.1 tablet computers in the u.s. that's giving the court time to look at apple's patent infringement claim. apple and samsung are fighting dozens of lawsuits around the world, involving both tablets and phones. meanwhile, google is giving a broad hint it will be releasing its own tablet, running its new operating system nicknamed jelly bean. it will reportedly have a seven-inch screen and cost 200

well, believe it or not, police in southern california say this massive pileup actually could have been a lot worse. in all, a tractor-trailer and 18 other vehicles ended up smashed together south of l.a. they say it was a miracle that no one was killed. most of the drivers actually walked away with only a few scrapes and bruises. lucky folks. for a look at the morning road conditions, thanks to debby, drivers can praise for more -- brace for more flooded highways across florida. and wet from cheyenne into the dakotas. weather-related airport delays are only expected in the city of miami. and now to the latest in the case against george zimmerman. new videotape is casting doubt on what led up to the shooting of trayvon martin. >> the documents indicate zimmerman could have done more

to defuse the situation by identifying himself as a neighborhood watch volunteer. zimmerman also said he was afraid of trayvon martin but still got out of his car anyway. the deadly encounter could have been avoided a lead detective said if zimmerman had stayed in his car. in another notorious case, casey anthony is back in the news. her lawyer has written a book about her. jose baez, the lead attorney at last year's trial says that she had mental health issues as baez puts it. detectives should have realized they were not dealing with someone who is playing with a full deck of cards. his book called "presumed guilty" comes out next week. >> harsh words. well, the so-called manhattan madam is back home for first time in four months. anna gristina was released on bond last night. the police say she ran a high-priced prostitution ring

for 15 years. she will appear in court again in the end of august. dolphins are known for their intelligence, but people in one louisiana neighborhood say they have a problem with a pretty angry dolphins. members of a home owner's group said three people have been bitten by an aggressive male dolphins who has been swimming near their home since katrina seven years ago. they're debating with how to deal with him. >> flipper is flipping out. in michigan, a loyal family dog is being hailed as a hero. bear helped to save the life of this adorable 14-month-old boy who fell in a swimming pool. bear jumped into the pool, put his back under the little boy to help keep him up out of the water while she raced to him. >> impressive. >> very, very impressive. there are good uses for dogs out there if you ever want to get
