>> in the news this sunday morning, july 1st, the sale of foie gras now banned in california, much to the delight of animal rights activists. and this morning volunteers will resume their search for a missing dodgers fan along pier32 who may have fallen in after the dodgers game at at&t park. good morning, thank joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a look at the weather. in for lisa argen, our meteorologist frances dinglasan. >> hi, everyone. another souppy start as you see with the live start of the barely visible golden gate bridge. we will see some sunshine again.

it is similar to questioned's conditions. we have the coastal drizzle, as well. the clouds will pull back. we will see sunnier conditions by lunchtime. should be more comfortable inland getting up to 78 degrees. sea breeze in the afternoon but a lot of sunshine for everybody. still partly cloudy along the coast. then an almost clear evening with temperatures in the low 60s to upper 70s by 7:00 tonight. lunchtime should be great. we have a lot of activities today and i'll have the accuweather seven-day forecast, including the 4th of july forecast coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, francis. it's now illegal for restaurants in california to serve foie gras or farmers to bruce the delicacy. it was driven in part by an abc7 news i-team investigation into animal cruelty that began in 2003. despite that controversy, abc7 news reporter thomas ramon found

lots of people ordering it up last night while they could. >> foie gras was flying out of the san francisco restaurant kip thans wanted to serve the delicacy. here on brannen street, while protesters chanted outside, diners feasted on foie gras inside. >> we thought we will give it a try. >> it's good. i'm not missing anything if i never, ever eat it again. >> here at alexander steakhouse the good-bye to foie gras was a huge success. >> we have a 50 person banquet going on downstairs, seven cores of foie gras. >> and protesters decided to announce the last mass feeding on the animals they say it's force-feeding to bring what they call a questionable delicacy. >> california's legislators did the right thing eight years ago when he passed the ban. >> and the i-team report is

behind the report 8 years ago. on sacramento street, enough liver for 50 people was delivered for its farewell. >> last night foie gras, we can eat anything for $5.00. >> he was filled with customers for the meal, as was china's restaurant on the embarcadero. he said he has never seen such a response to this dish, especially since they have had a farewell to foie gras special for the past twelve days. they have gone through 40 pounds in the past two days alone. >> people put it on their french fries, on the side dishes, on the salmon, on the sushi. it's been crazy. >> it's a sad commentary that these people are indulging in something that is a result of such cruelty. >> the chef at alexanders says this fight isn't over. chef and restaurant owners are working with legislators in sacramento to try to overturn the ban. animal rights activists say they will sue to make sure the ban

stays in place. abc7 news. and besides the foie gras ban, a number of other new state laws take effect today. they include a law that requires healthcare insurers to provide coverage for the behavioral treatment of autism. tattoo and piercing art efforts and those who apply permanent cosmetics will now have to register with the local government and receive annual health and safety training. there is also a new law to protect car buyers that requires dealers to marked used vehicles with bright red warning stickers if they are listed in the national motor vehicle database at junk, salvage or damaged by floods. starting today you are going to pay more to ride bart and muni and caltrain and golden gate transit. bart is raise fares by five cents a trip on average. and muni fast passes go up two dollars todd. a monthly pass from bart and muni costs $74.

muni only passes cost $64." discount fares for seniors, students and low income riders cost a dollar more. caltrain now charges 25 cents for each way and golden gate transit charges 25 cents each way more for bus rides. and ferry service between sausalito and san francisco is up 50 cents. bridge tolls go up today for big trucks and rvs with more than two axles. the fare is now five dollars per axle on the seven statute-owned bridges. six dollars per axle gone the golden gate bridge. bridge follows for most cars and light trucks are unchanged. this morning 49er calledden smith is recovering after being stabbed at a house party. police describe his wounds as minor. the 22-year-old smith had an outstanding rookie season last year. this is not expected to set him

back. sheriff's deputies say shots were fired at a house around 2:00 a.m. yesterday morning. that's in rural santa clara county. besides smith, deputies found two people with gunshot wounds, all taken to the hospital. investigators are not saying how the fight started. in a statement the 49ers said we are in contact with alden and are thankful his injuries were not more serious and he's recovering comfortably. a shooting of an armed robbery suspect in vallejo is under review. it happened yesterday. witnesses say the man had a gun after he tried to run from police after crashing a stolen car. pursuing police and sheriff's deputies caught up with him on the side of a home on sheridan street. police say the incident began around 9:00 in the morning with a robbery at bbc gasoline on wilson avenue. they spotted the suspect driving a stolen suv and the chase was

on. the man crashed the car into a fire hydrant about an hour later and was shot by officers who say he pointed a gun at them. abc7 news reporter sergio shows us the dramatic ending captured on a cell phone. >> in this video shot by a neighbor, you can hear officers shouting at the suspect. then a hail of gunfire. this was a violent end to what began as a 911 call for an armed robbery on wilson after after 9:00 this morning. the suspect sped off in a jeep cherokee that had been reported stolen in concord. police spotted the suspect and he got them on a chase that ended after he smashed into the side of this garage. suspect then took off on foot and tried to hide. police quickly locked down the neighborhood as they searched. >> we came up, and there was cobbs cops out front. the minute we walked outside the cops came back in the house

because there was a gunman running with a gun. >> there were two other officers here on the side and they came in through our backyard. there were several shots fired. >> watching the video shot by a neighbor again you can see the officers seem to con verge on the backyard of a home, then shout something presumably at the suspect before opening fire. two vallejo officers are on unpaid administrative leave which is standard following an officer-involved shooting. the suspect's name las not been released but police say he is someone they have crossed paths with before. >> we haven't positively idhim, it's just something we are following up on at this point. >> abc7 news. >> developing news in contra costa county where a house fire overnight sent flames shooting 50 feet into the air. take a look. this is near interstate 68 to and highway 4 in martinez.

fire cruz arrived on trinity place to fine this fire already raging. one person inside the home did manage to get to a neighbor's house and he's okay. firefighters say three people and the family dogs are displaced. the fire was so intense it caused the roof to collapse over the kitchen and garage areas. well, the search for a missing dodgers baseball fan who may have fallen into san francisco bay will resume this morning. yesterday family and friends searched the water but found so sign of victor morillo. the 27-year-old vanished friday night after the dodgers game. a friend said he was on his cell phone when he walk out of the car and walked toward pier32. when he looked up, he was gone. >> we aren't going to give up. we are going to continue. my sister said bring my son home. i want to say i did everything i did possible to search for my nephew. >> even though morillo was in

shape, he did not know how to swim. family and friends are posting flyers all along the embarcadero and crissy field asking the public to keep an eye out. a fundraiser will be held today for residents who lost their homes in a fire back in may in san francisco's mission district. 37 people were displaced, including several children by this fire that damaged two apartment buildings. one person was injured. the red clogs said more than half the residents have found new places to live, but the rest of still struggling. a fundraiser will be held at today's sunday streets event in the mission from three to six pm. donations can be brought to the casanova lounge. >> coming up next, the east coast still reeling from a powerful storm that knocked out power to millions of people. it could take several days for electricity to be restored. and we've got the latest on two

states. virginia was particularly hard-hit. >> unfortunately so far we've been able to confirm six fatalities in virginia. all of them have been due to trees coming down. >> 27-year-old keith is one of the victims. a father of two was driving home from school at the height of the storm when a tree fell on to his car, killing him. >> in new jersey tragedy at the state campground. two cousins, age 2 and , were killed when a pine tree fell on their tent. >> two families camping together. they were in two tents. during the storm it got very scary for them. they combined in one tent at some point and the tree fell on the tent that was occupied. >> trees fell on many power lines, creating a blackout at one time that affected more than 3 million people. it may take several days to restore power to everybody. >> we may have some folks who saw outages through to the end of the week. >> since so many states are affected by the outage, it's

difficult to find out of state crews to help restore power. chuck severson, abc news, new york. >> firefighters are making progress on two of the most destructive wildfires in colorado history. authorities now say the waldo canyon fire near colorado springs is 45% contained. today people whose homes were burned are going to be allowed to tour the destruction. crews also expect to have that massive wildfire burning west of fort collins fully contained today. that fire has destroyed more than 87,000 acres. rodney king, the man who asked can we all just get along? he has been laid to rest in los angeles. as you know his beating by l.a. pd officers was captured on video back in 1991. the acquittal of four white officers led to riots. king was found dead in the pool of his home two weeks ago.

is. >> a lot of people want to know about the 4th of july weather. >> exactly. i think they are going to like it. we are still watching the fog, always a factor especially coming in through the golden gate. as can see it's spreading into the bay area right now and the bay bridge behind us. here's another live shot. it's not actually as thick as it was yesterday at this time, as we can actually see a little built of the blue sky there and the low clouds moving across. we have a pretty shot. things ever changing. so we will keep you updated on

the latest changes with live doppler 7 hd as it does its sweep around the bay area. no major concerns, but there was a lot of coastal drizzle this morning. in fact,, in some areas there was enough drizzle to pick up a little bit of measurable precipitation. so that's something that we will try to get you some numbers on in a little bit. right now temperatures are in the upper 50s to low 60s mainly around the bay area. 56 in san francisco and look for 62 in san jose. so we can expect another cool start with the low clouds and fog. coastal drizzle once again. it will stay cloudy along the coast but then it will be sunny inland. then we've got actually a string of nice days, sunny and mild this week with a slight bump in temperatures for the beginning of the work week. we have this area of low pressure, the trough that's moving through toward oregon right now, and with this we saw that deepening marine layer. we are still going to see the

cool on shore winds today, keeping our temperatures cool along the coast. basically the forecast model as it plays out, it will pull back just to the coast, the low clouds and fog. but never quite clearing the coast once again today. so we will see 60s around the beach, 70s around the bay, and then 80s inland. but a little bit of sunshine there in santa cruz. so that will warm up nicely for you. today look for a high of 77 in san jose. temperatures are timely very similar to yesterday's temperatures. low 70s to mid-70s along the peninsula, and in san francisco. downtown san francisco 66 degrees for the giants game. it should be pretty comfortable. you might need to bring a jacket. i always do in san francisco. although you probably won't need it. in the north bay here's a look at temperatures, 70s, low 80s, a little bit farther inland. more sunshine in the east bay with temperatures in the low 60s, and once again we will see upper 70s to low 80s, t-shirt

sorry for the technical glitch there. we will try to get back to that story. a pretty important election there in mexico today. the upstate new york school bus monitor who was bullied by four seventh grade boys said she is satisfied that they are being suspended for a year. the students videotaped themselves taunting the 68-year-old on the bus. part of their punishment includes 50 hours of community service with senior citizens. skins the video was posted on youtube, karen kline has received an outpouring of support from strangers. she says she's ready to talk to the boys who tormented her. >> i would like to meet them face-to-face and ask them why they did it. >> she says the best part of showing her ordeal to the public is that it has inspired parents to talk to their kids and teach them what they should not do. a two-year-old girl is home with her family this morning of a battling a mysterious disease

that put her in a coma. the illness was finally diagnosed by doctors at children's hospital in oakland. abc7s health and science reporter carolyn johnson has the story. >> open it. open it. >> like most two year olds, she likes to get her hands on almost anything and that's an amazing accomplishment considering that just months ago she could barely control her movements at all. >> she won't be able to grasp something and she won't be able to walk and talk. >> jillian's family took these cell phone videos of the seizures that would sometimes last for 30 minutes at a time. cause was still a mystery when she arrived at children's hospital oakland from her home in reno. >> she was moving in ses scantily. always arms and legs were witching. her arms were flailing in the air. her muscles never stopped moving. >> the doctor suspected

encephalitis but was unsure of the variety or the cause. she said a sample taken from a spinal tap to an expert in spain n the meantime doctors also had to deal with her dangerous seizures. >> one part of her therapy includes giving her medication toss intentionally put her into a coma so that she wouldn't move. >> jillian's mom never left her bedside as the ordeal stretched on for weeks and for months. >> all i know is that i never lose hope, that she will come back again. >> finally the sample sent to spain confirmed the diagnosis. jailian, has two years of age, had a newly developed form of encephalitis. so new revouchers only described it a few years as she was born. >> it is known at anti-mmdr. it's caused by anti-bodies created by the body's own immune system. >> it crosses into the brain and attacks parts of the brain. >> while the diagnosis is new,

the doctor said there are several strategies available to treat it. in jillian's case doctors used a process similar to kidney dialysis to remove the antibodies from her blood. her parents said slowly they have seen signs of recovery. >> we've seen her talking, we've seen her vocalizing. even though we can't understand but we are just waiting for her to say mom and dad. >> revived from the coma and treated for her symptoms, they released her to return home to reno. she still faces long months of physical therapy, but for her family finally to be able to hearer speak and watch her play, mark the end of a painful journey. >> it was tears of joy because i've been waiting for her. i've been waiting for her. >> carolyn johnson, abc67 news. dr. petri said health officials have been alerting doctors about jillian's form of

encephalitis and they are also studying blood sample from previous cases trying to learn more about the history of the disease. this week's 4th of july parade in fremont will do without a 50-foot giant helium balloon in the shape of an american eagle. the cost of helium has suddenly shot sky high. a global helium shortage threatens to deflate a lot of balloons at parents experience sticker shock. it's now upward of $200 a tank, used to be 90. maintenance issues at foreign helium plants are to blame and most of the helium is extracted from natural gas atal cutta,al jere yeah and australia. experts say it could take a year or more for helium prices to deflate. coming up next, one person's innovative solutions to

coastal clouds and the fog and that's about it right now. as we take a look at temperatures it's still in the 50s and 60s. 60 in concord and antioch. san rafael, 61. and the cool spot right now is 55 in half moon bay, 62 in the downtown san jose area. so we've got the low clouds and fog, the coastal drizzle again this morning. kind of like a repeat of yesterday. it will still stay cloudy along the coast most of the day and then it will be sunny inland a little bit earlier on. sunny and mild through the week, including the 4th of july. here's a look at that trough of low pressure that's moving through toward oregon so it is still continuing to bring us this on shore flow and that's bringing us this cooler weather. temperatures actually a little bit cooler than what you would expect for this time of year. and in just some locks. along the coast it's only going to stay in the 60s. with the forecast model showing

the clouds kind of pulling back, still hugging the north bay coastline and the peninsula. that's where we will see 60s along the beach, 70s around the bay and 80s inland today. you can expect a pleasant one. 70s again for you in san jose. low 60s in parts of the peninsula. downtown san francisco, 66 degrees for you. if you are heading to the sunday streets fair, mission, that area, checking out lilac street, it will be comfortable, a lot of sunshine, upper 60s. look for low 80s through parts of california, calistoga. there's a little green there saying we might get some of the cloud cover but anything we will see any measurable precipitation. and also here's a look in the east bay. upper 60s to low 70s. once again upper 70s in the interior valleys. look through a lot of sunshine. and morgan hill 73 degrees. and the fireworks, great news,
