4:31 pm
two of those people originally from my home town brooklyn moved closer to the sunshine and their granddaughter faith. today they're cooking up one of their favorite dishes with an unusual ingredient which makes it a great tasting great for you meal, and a snap to make. they also have a secret recipe that kept their marriage going strong. this is the kitchen. lovely kitchen. nice to have you here. exciting. i'm very excited, the whole thing of cooking and having a great time and the stories i've been hearing of you cooking together. we've been cooking together 10 years. i've been cooking my whole life, but ten years together. and we've been married 47 so 37 years. is it something you said you know what this would be kind of fun for us to do, and for the rest of our lives. did you cook as well? no she does most of the
4:32 pm
cooking i'm the sous-chef. the sous-chef. i prepare for her and i clean up. that's it. he cleans up great. that's an important job. we met unusual, if i told you about how we met, it would take a whole other tv show. we met at my fraternity house and fell in love when we saw each other. manny and i have been married for 46 years, a long time, good times, bad times but our times. and we tried all kinds of things to keep our marriage going. keep it fun, exciting and different. were cooking chicken with edamame beans which are healthy. peppers, onions, and ginger and some spices, nothing too exotic. i don't cook with spices no one has ever heard of. did you mention chicken? i did. so it's a healthy dish. where did this come about, something in your family, something you came up with,
4:33 pm
or maybe two courses and combine them together? yes, yes, and yes. mostly i thought of it. (laughing) he didn't, he's lying. adrian and manny moved to connecticut after living in brooklyn, after too many cold winters they packed up the family and moved to florida. my daughter said we're going to north carolina, and i said no you're not we're going to florida and when we go you're coming and bringing the baby. the baby is my granddaughter, also my daughter is my baby. so we got all the ingredients right. one more, very important ingredient if you want this go well and smoothly.
4:34 pm
is it drizzling for the chicken. we always have a shot of vodka before we cook. is this a tradition of some sort? it's an old spanish tradition. would you do that with tequila if it's a spanish tradition. a shot for you and manny likes to drink his from a juice glass. so here we go. alright. this just makes it that much more fun. alright here we go. i have a whole in my face. does that happen to you mostly. maybe we should have another one? alright so what do
4:35 pm
we have to do first. let's move some stuff out of the way. what first? this dish in order to make this dish we have to prepare everything first because once we start cooking it happens quickly. okay. it's a little bit like a stir-fry but stir fry was never like my thing. you made something like that before. chinese before. i spent like 140 dollars on bok choy and everything you can guess and when we started cooking and chopping you have to see those guys do it really fast. no possible. normally i wouldn't have these lovely matching bowls, but of course we're on tv. what would you normally use though? whatever i can get my hands on. this is something i can get right now. in my house i'm the same way. sometimes the bowls don'match. you actually went out and bought?
4:36 pm
my girlfriend didn't want to be embarrassed so she gave them to me. what's your girlfriend's name. linda. linda thank you for the bowls. now they won't be embarrassed. so now we're going to be using matching bowls, but normal everyday people don't have matching bowls. right we usually don't have matching bowls. and when we do recipes we don't measure everything. it's funny because a lot of people don't measure, it's almost like taste testing it, i think that's what most chefs really do, and then when they do have a recipe they try to figure out what do they use. you never use the exact amount every time. my mother i asked her for her recipe because i loved her matzo ball soup. i said mom i really need the recipe but you have to give it to me in tablespoons. and she says usually i just (expletive). that's a jewish expression actually it just means i just put i just throw it in.
4:37 pm
what's the expression again? i (expletive). i don't know, i'm sharing it with the world. that's the expression i (expletive). she said i just (expletive). you just (expletive) yourself or. okay come on. we just do. it's a jewish thing. so if i say to a jewish person i just (expletive). well you wouldn't just say it in any context, you would say it while cooking. so if someone said joey how much salt do i use? oh i just (expletive). coming up next on my family recipe rocks. adrian and manny get to work on this dish as the vodka keeps on flowing. and see why this isn't the first time cameras have been rolling in this kitchen. coming up next.
4:39 pm
4:40 pm
after and ceremonial shot of vodka to get our blood flowing it was time to roll up our sleeves and get this going. what next? everything. everything first. and we'll do it together. so i'm going to give everyone a job. manny what do you want babe? i want to go to the other room. no manny what do you want? can you handle the ginger? yeah cause i don't know how to do the ginger. so manny is going to. so you're going to know the exact ingredients. he's the sous-chef. right. so he's going to peel this. no because this is just about two tablespoons. how do you know its two tablespoons. i remembered it. there you go. who (expletive) did i (expletive) or you. that's one of the first things in the frying pan.
4:41 pm
so put in ginger and garlic the first things we put in. joey you'll take the skin off the garlic and manny is going to cut the garlic into smaller pieces and into the food processor. with the ginger. yes because they go in together first. so it makes sense you know. adrian manny haven't always been cooking together in the kitchen. like many couples the kitchen was usually adrian's domain. but when you've been together for over forty years its usually because you're good at keeping things exciting and fun. and cooking together has definitely worked for this couple. she was cooking, and yelled out hey manny come and help me. and i've been helping her in the kitchen since then. it was a matter of her asking me, and i said fine, i'll do it.
4:42 pm
i wanted to be with her rather than lie in bed and watch television. being in the kitchen with her made sense. next we're going to cut an onion up. but not in the chopper because one chops too much gets mushy. so how do i cut it. first like that. very good. then put it that way. cut it this way. a few times. not too thin. or we'll be here all day. keep it together right. cut it the other way. right exactly. very good. my god, very good. now this isn't the first time adrian and manny have had tv cameras in their kitchen. the two auditioned for a cooking show a few years back and taped the same dish we're going to make tonight. we're going to make.
4:43 pm
chicken. alright i want lipstick. alright. (expletive) (expletive) is this the same show? cooking always brings people together and for adrian and many it's no different. but even more important than spending time together s one secret ingredient this couple swears by. and after 46 years id say they have the recipe figured out.
4:44 pm
what's the secret to a good long lasting marriage. you must have a sense of humor. yhe can't alize he's a guy, so he can't read my mind and if i'm expecting him to do something. like wouldn't it be nice if he bought me flowers. so what i did is say id like flowers. okay good idea. she keeps me alive. she keeps me happy. she keeps me alive that's it. i wouldn't want to be anywhere else but here. like i said humor is very important. i know we're in trouble when we're serious and not laughing anymore. i don't have time to stay mad for too long. i mean life is this journey and you know, you just want to get it all in and especially i personally for me, i like sharing it with someone. you know different things for different folks but it's fun waking up with
4:45 pm
4:48 pm
we're in west palm beach florida and back in the kitchen with adrian and manny as they show us how to cook one of their favorite dishes chicken and edimome over rice this happy couple has been going strong for over forty six years by loving life laughing and cooking together. we've put about two table spoons of fresh ginger and garlic in the food processor, along with the secret ingredient is going in the pan after manny puts in the canola oil. we don't use canola oil very much but back in the sixties canola oil was very fun. yes. fun with canola oil.
4:49 pm
do we want to go there? it was on sheets. we don't want to go there. never mind. usually this dish can be prepared and cooked in under 30 minutes, but as i found out cooking with adrian and manny also involved vodka shots to keep things moving, which ended up slowing things down. you drink while you're cooking. and you're cooking and you're part of it. usually we're drinking wine or something but i like this better. you know wine is good. everybody take a glass. alright here we go. to the red pepper. okay we like that. oh boy. okay. now while i'm still able to use a sharp object safely adrian had me chop up a red pepper.
4:50 pm
we also made a quick sauce in the dish. 4 cup of sesame oil, 4 of soy sauce and corn starch. as the canola oil heated up we added one more secret ingredient into the ginger and garlic before adding it to the pan. this is lemon grass. this is the most exotic thing i add to the dish but you can buy this right in your supermarket. alright. i mean this is really easy and what were going to do is use a tablespoon of lemon grass. where do you put that. in the paste. this will go in the very beginning. doesn't want to come out. giving ma a very hard time. this is going to go in with when. it's going to go in. alright. we've got a
4:51 pm
little problem. what's the problem. you need help. it doesn't want to come out. okay. it's going to squirt all over us. hey. once the oil heats up we add the ginger, garlic, lemongrass mix and heat it up for about three minutes. the chopped up peppers and onions will go in next but now it's time to get the chicken ready. this is for you. because when i cut meat up, chicken or meatloaf and i need to use my hands, these are gloves. is that not your color? it matches my eyes. it feels like i'm going for a checkup. cavity search. alright you want to cut with me? use i'll cut with your. to make it easier. just cut and i'll follow. to make it easier buy chicken fingers, but they can be more expensive so you can buy chicken cutlets or breast. i might mistake my finger for the chicken. i'm not giving you anymore vodka that's for sure.
4:52 pm
once the chicken is cut up into bite sized pieces we added the peppers and onions and cook for another three minutes. then add the chicken and cook it until it gets golden brown. finally we add the sauce and edamame and finish it off for another three or four minutes. i put my own salt and pepper and let everyone do their own. it's a matter of taste. up next on my family recipe rocks adrian and manny's chicken and vegetable stir-fry is ready, but how will it stack up on taste. if there is an episode and it's something i don't like, i will say it.
4:54 pm
4:55 pm
their marriage going for nearly 50 years. as the dish finished off, manny got some easy-to-make rice in the microwave. adrian went on auto pilot making sure the dish got finished right. basically the cooking is done now. it's just a matter of taking our rice put it on your platter and pouring this over the rice, and there is your meal. what's that. he's taking out the rice. open this up. careful. alright. what are you doing over here? they just kept going. i just wanted to sit down and relax for a little while. i think it's time. long grain and wild rice.
4:56 pm
but you can use brown rice. kind of like manny. long and wild. okay. did you like that honey. let me help him out here. don't burn yourself. it smells amazing. it smells good, it tastes good, it's easy and healthy. we had a blast hanging out with adrian and manny is west palm beach. a recipe that is tasty and easy to make, we also learned a lot about life and how a sense of humor has been so important in their lives and kept their marriage rocking for almost half a century. i have to tell you it's really good. i honestly so far i'm going to be definitely making this for my family. i really enjoy it. if there is an episode with something i do not like i will say it. but this is absolutely
