we continue to follow breaking news in san francisco. one person detained. >> up to 20 people may have to find some place else to live after that huge fire in the sylvester neighborhood. amy hollyfield is live at the scene. -- >> reporter: my update is something for you to see we have pictures of this fire. take a look right now. it is incredible taken by a woman who had to run from her home she grabbed her dog and parents and took off and realized she had her phone with her and took these amazing pictures. there were 50 people evacuated on this block. of those people, 20 lost their

homes in this fire they've evacuated most of the block. a lot of those people will be let back in because their homes are fine, but 20 did lose their homes. the home first on fire three-story building top two floors collapsed. this was so huge firefighters had to take a defensive stance. because of how close together the homes here are and the size of the fire, they went to a four alarm. >> it was huge. the fire buildings destroyed, exposure building pretty much destroyed. bravo probably can be rebuilt, it destroyed two houses. maybe a third i didn't see -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: police do have a 61-year-old man in custody. they believe that he started this fire on purpose. here's how they caught him. a witness saw him running from the scene and carrying an incendiary device, possibly a

gas tank or a gas can. witnesses were telling police about it. while they were talking to police they saw him come back to the scene, pointed him out and police made their arrest. they have no idea why he would want to do this. one person checked out for possibly breathing in too much smoke that person is fine not taken to the hospital no other injuries. bay shore boulevard this is a very busy street here in san francisco a wide thoroughfare, it is closed, full of police cars, ladder trucks from the fire department, hoses, they will be here for another hour or two. they have their investigation, arson team is here. they also have to cleanup and they are keeping an eye on hot spots. do not count on using bay shore boulevard for the next hour or two. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. a state senate committee is set to consider a bill today that would make party bus operators accountable for

underaged drinking. assemblyman hill is introducing the measure named after the 19-year-old who got off a party bus two years ago and left to drive home with an alcohol level three times the legal limit. the teen was killed when he crashed his car. hill wants to require party bus operators who verify ahead of time if there are minors board and have adult super vision. many in the business say organizers of the parties should be held accountable. a san francisco building inspection commissioner claims mayor lee committed perjury while testifying at the misconduct hearing involving ross mirkarimi. mayor lee told the ethics commission friday he had not consulted with the board of supervisors before charging mirkarimi with misconduct. the examiner reports, during a break in the hearing building commissioner walker said supervisor told her the mayor had previously asked whether mirkarimi should be charged?

lee began the process of removing mirkarimi from office in march, following his guilty plea on a misdemeanor charge in a domestic violence case involving his wife eliana lopez. san francisco police looking for a man they say tacked an 82-year-old woman who was trying -- attacked an 82-year-old woman who was trying to protect geese in golden gate park. san francisco police say the woman saw a child who was possibly harassing the geese. she told the child to leave the birds alone. an unidentified man walked up and shoved her. she fell to the pavement and struck her head suffering what later turned out to be life-threatening injuries. police are still looking for the man they believe is a guardian of the child. s at san francisco's largest public housing development working to calm fears following fourth fatal shooting in the sunnydale neighborhood since may, the shooting took place sunday night police found the victim like in -- lying in the street

we continue follow breaking news in san francisco an overnight fire. >> nearly two dozen residents are without a home after losing their buildings to a raging fire overnight off of 101/280 interchange. police say a man started the blaze on purpose. amy hollyfield is live at the scene at silver and bay shore. >> reporter: the arson team is here and it is busy piecing together a lot of different factors. the fact that man was seen running from the scene with an incendiary device. the fire was so huge when they got here. also, the fact that this place has caught fire three years ago i am take a look at these amazing picture when firefighters saw this they knew this fire could be

suspicious something this big likely would have some help it started before 3:00 this morning on boutwell at bay shore beautiful. the top two stories collapsed home destroyed total of four homes damaged the fire did jump the street and caught a deck across the street on fire. >> the only thing that we had a well advanced fire when we arrived, we had fire in four buildings the main building had fire from top to bottom extending to the buildings on either side i had concerns about it getting across the street. our crews did a fabulous job. >> reporter: police have a 61-year-old man in custody. they believe he set the fire on purpose. witnesses saw him running from the scene carrying an incendiary device, possibly a gas can. as they were telling police about him, they saw him return to the scene, they pointed him out to police and police got

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. we have developing news from oakland. police have moved in this morning on protesters camping out at lakeview elementary school, a story we've been following. parents and teachers have been camping and holding rallies on campus on grand avenue for the past 2 1/2 weeks. police moved in around 4:00 this morning we are told and asked the protesters to leave, many did. but we're told a few are staying and willing to be arrested. a district spokesman said officials have allowed protests, parents wanting the school to stay open protesters are opposed to the plan to close lakeview and four other schools due to budget cuts.

results. this comes ahead of a dangerous driving period. >> reporter: that's right 4th of july is tomorrow of course and historically that is the deadliest day of the year on u.s. highways. turns out some of the new technology is helping drivers avoid accidents. two technologies have proven the most helpful in avoiding crashes. one, the forward collision avoidance. a system that warns you first and then automatically brakes if a rear end crash is imminent. owners of mercedes and acuras with the technology reported 14% drop in insurance claims a year compared to similar cars without the system. two, the adaptive headlights they twist automatically toward the direction of a turn so you can see into dark corners ahead many volvo and mazda owners with it had a nine and 10% lower property damage claim right rate. there's a third technology that did not prove as helpful, a lane departure warning system that alerts you if you

are drifting out of lane, drivers who had that did not reduce number of accident claims. right now nhtsa has not proposed making these technologies mandatory it plans to gather more information about cost and reliability. forward collision avoidance right now costs about $1200. 5:50. oakland police and a group of parents protesting closure of lakeview school are headed for another confrontation. terry mcsweeney is live at the scene. >> reporter: the confrontation is underway, about 4:00 this morning district police and oakland pd moved into the lakeview school where protesters have occupied this building for two weeks. behind me you can see some of the people outside the building protesting the fact that five schools are going to be closed in the oakland unified school district. inside between 15 and 20 people perhaps in there or were in there right now there
