>> announcer: right now abc7 news begins with breaking news. that breaking news comes from silver terrace neighborhood, 20 residents out in the cold after an overnight fire spread to several homes. huge flames caught on camera. police have detained a person. we've been following this story since 4:30 this mo.

amy hollyfield joins us live from silver avenue and bay shore boulevard with the latest. >> reporter: i just got an update from the red cross. they tell me that a total of six families lost their homes this morning. take a look at this amazing video when firefighters saw this they were suspicious. this video was taken by a woman who had to run had time to grab her dog and pan -- parents and that was it. it turned out 20 people lost their homes. they believe someone set this fire on purpose. the home that was originally on fire was empty, it was destroyed, a total of four homes on one side of boutwell at bay shore boulevard damaged. the fire crossed the street and caught a deck on fire as well. everyone got out okay. two victims were an 88-year-old man on 92-year-old man. their caregiver rushed here

when she heard about she was to see they had gotten out on their own. >> i'm glad they got out safely, knowing that both of them are ill. and their age, you know so i'm really glad they got out safely and everything is okay. >> reporter: police did make an arrest they took a 61-year-old man into custody. witnesses say they saw him running from the scene carrying a gas can. investigators are focused on that gas can they have it in their position. they are looking into the fact there was a fire here three years ago. again, no one was hurt in this fire. red cross is here to help. bay shore beautiful has been closed all morning cars are now being allowed to go through they've opened it up. there are still some emergency vehicles here, red cross advance, a little crowded, but it is -- red cross vans, but

it is a little crowded. reporting live in san mateo -- live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. i took 101 to the 280 extension it is there in the middle of the v you can see the orange glow when the fire was burning. right now the fire is out could there still be a traffic impact? >> we saw streets blocked off in amy's report. >> they are beginning to let traffic through but that intersection at bay shore boulevard north of silver is crowded as you could see as an amy said shortly that should begin 100 block of pwoutwell is where that congestion is. no significant slowing on the freeway, you can see this, from the freeway both 101 and the 280 extension. we are not seeing any significant slowing there. muni still being rerouted around the scene bay shore and boutwell until further notice

don't do so. most people leaving willingly although slowly. parents and teachers have been camping out and holding rallies for the past 2 1/2 weeks. oakland police and school district officers moved in 4:00 this morning. at least two people are saying they want to stay and risk arrest, proposeers opposing the plan to close five schools, including lakeview this fall, due to budget cuts. terry mcsweeney will have a live report coming up in our next half hour. happening less than an hour from now, more than 3,000 nurses at seven bay area sutter hospitals will again a one-day walk-out. it will be the fifth strike in eight months in an increasingly bitter contract distribute -- dispute over health care and sick leave. the sutter hospitals in san mateo and alameda counties. san francisco police are looking for a man they say

attacked an 82-year-old woman who was trying to protect the geese in golden gate park. it happened friday morning around 11:00 on the banks of stow lake in the park. the woman saw a child possibly harassing the geese. she told the child to leave the birds alone that's when an unidentified man walked up and shoved her. she fell to the pavement and struck her head, suffering what later turned out to be life-threatening injuries. police are looking for the man they believe is a guardian of the child. jury deliberations get underway in a few hours in the trial of a san francisco man accused of beating a priest who he says molested him as a child. william lynch faces felony charges of salt and elderly abuse against gerald lindner. defense attorneys claim lynch did not intend to attack lindner when he confronted the retired priest two years ago. prosecutors call lynch a vigilante and say he took part in a selfish act of revenge. if convicted, lynch could face up to four years in prison.

san francisco building inspector claims mayor ed lee committed perjury while testifying at the hearing involving sheriff ross mirkarimi. mayor lee told the ethics commission friday he had not consulted with the board of have advisers before charging mirkarimi with misconduct. the examiner reports, during a break in the hearing building commissioner walker said supervisor told her the mayor previously asked whether mirkarimi should be charged. mayor lee began the process of removing mirkarimi from office in march, following his guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge in a domestic violence case involving his wife. 6:07. if you look outside, we have clouds and a little damp. kind of starting out similar to yesterday morning. >> let's check in with mike. we'll talk about how things on live doppler are very quiet right now because of the clouds and breaking up already you can see over the last three hours, not much to

right now breaking news. we start with breaking news amy hollyfield joins us from the silver terrace neighborhood. >> amy was this cash was this fire intentionally set? >> reporter: that is the theory. now it is really sad you can see some of the victims are getting a good look at how much damage was done to their homes some people lost everything. look at this amazing video and how huge this fire was. it started before 3:00 this morning on boutwell at bay shore boulevard. it was so big and spread so

quickly firefighters were immediately suspicious. now they do think that someone intentionally set this fire. what was also suspicious, the fact there was a fire here three years ago. the home where the fire started was vacant, it has been empty for a while. it has been plagued with squatters, which has been frustrating to the residents here and very upsetting to the fire victims, especially now they are looking at their destroyed homes. >> it is pretty damaged. if you look in the back, the whole back is gone my whole bedroom is gone, everything i had to is gone, all member rights -- all memories i lost in another fire now these memories are lost, like wiping the slate, ridiculous. really . >> reporter: police took a 61-year-old man into custody. witnesses -- witnesses saw him carrying a gas can

investigators focusing on that can they have it in their custody. they are looking into the fact there was a fire here three years ago. no one was hurt this morning. the red cross is here to help the six families who their homes 19 adults and three children, two adults were elderly an 88-year-old man and 92-year-old who did make it out safely. four homes damaged, the red cross is trying to help those people figure out where they are going to live. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. for a while the local streets there impacted and muni as well. let's check with sue hall. good news is that has been cleared. muni back on its route, the 9 line is back on route and all those streets around the vicinity, bay shore, silver, boutwell, all reopened. traffic on 101 all visible from 101 and 280 all moving

watsonville to mid and upper 80s inland with sunshine. any clouds mainly along the san mateo county coast. we are following developing news out of oakland where police could be getting ready to end a parent protest at a shutdown school. terry mcsweeney is live at lakeview elementary. >> reporter: we are told that two arrests are either happening right now or they are imminent. two people wanted to be arrested to further make their point that five schools here in the oakland unified school district should not be shutdown. lakeview elementary is being shutdown. you can see the the last few people who are out there these people were not camped out, not occupying the school they were outside in the tents and sleeping bags that you can see looking to the left oakland police department still here and greatly reduced presence. we are told the arrestees are

going to be brought out short look at pictures from earlier police moved in 4:00 this morning they moved on to the campus we are told 15 to 20 people were inside, some children were in there as well. the whole point of this protest is to try to let the oakland unified school district know that these people will not tolerate five schools shutdown especially lakeview elementary the school district says there is nothing they can do the money is just not there to keep all the schools open. here is what a school spokesman said. >> at a certain point we determined that the protesters had ample opportunity to make their statement. their voices were heard. they are trespassing we have a right to the site and to disperse the demonstrators. and we needed to do that now in order to continue with preparations for the 2012-13 school year. >> reporter: in addition to

removing the demonstrators and the occupiers, they also removed the signs from the fences and there were many. they were taken down most of them by protesters and across the street protesters are saying this is not the end of their protest. they say at 5:00 this evening they will be back here having a gathering, rally. they also plan to block the driveway at the oakland unified school district headquarters. the plan for this school is to make this part of the administration and they are saying that well if you want to make this the administration we'll take over and from you getting in to the current administration building. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. new this morning, police in union city right now are looking for three suspects after a woman was shot during a home invasion robbery. police responded to the home on hanford street 10:15 last night the three confronted the 62-year-old woman, forced her in the house at gunpoint the woman was hit by gunfire and

taken to the hospital, she has ungone surgery. her adult son was beaten, his injuries are not considered life-threatening. anyone with information about the shooting should call union city police. san jose fire investigators say illegal fireworks are the likely cause of a one acre fire last night. the blaze in the silver creek district broke out not far from several homes but it was put out quickly. firefighters found these firecrackers at the scene and witnesses report ceiling kids running away when the fire broke -- report seeing kids running away when the fire broke out. in oakland new budget means the city will face the 4th of july with fewer open stations this year. it is called a rotating broken-out that means a total of eight firefighters will sit out for three days. the budget decision will save the city four million dollars over the fiscal year. no stations in the -- amateur fireworks are
