hit. we'll go inside the cult of, "call me maybe." >> good evening. i'm juju chang. tonight the story of a young millionaire, who vanished from his yacht in the middle of the night. less than a week later, his wife and his mother are already in a nasty legal battle over his $100 million fortune. a mystery raising tantalizing questions at every turn. did his wife ask for a divorce before his fatal sail? could he have staged his disappearance? maybe he's still alive. here is matt gutman. >> reporter: he was a dashing self-made millionaire, had a glamourous wife. >> i love you. >> four kids. he'd amassed almost $200 million in a huge natural gas deal. that money bought him this

waterfront mansion in ft. lauderdale. he hob knocked with celebrities. to clear his head, he's take his fishing boat, telling jerry levine -- >> i have a hard time clearing my mind anyway. this is a good place to try. >> reporter: all the while, his life was about to unravel around him. two weeks ago, this video shows that same fishing boat washed ashore on a ft. lauderdale beach. lights on, engines running. the tycoon's wallet and his cellphone. hours earlier, security cameras captured him leaving his villa, barefoot he heads to his boat. traveling through the channel to a stormy atlantic. police declared him missing. there's been no sign of him

since. the first clue that his wife served him with divorce papers that same day. so, did he jump? was he killed? was it an accident or as some believe, did he engineer his own disappearance? with the investigation ongoing and even before the coast guard ended its search, the fight for the money began. between his wife and his own mother. >> my son assigned me the curatorship to protect his assets and to keep things status quo, so that his family would be taken care of. >> aguilar's mother filed an emergency petition to take control of his estate. >> he did not want jamie aguilar to be in any way a conserver over his assets. >> that's his wife firing off counter motions in court, laying claim to the money. >> she's an enabler. >> jamie's lawyer accused her of mismanaging funds in the past.

>> ellen has enabled guma to do these things that were irrational. >> in court today, an army of lawyers fighting if out. >> you have his mother. you have his wife. there's apparently a controversy between them. >> if she wants to step out, i have no problem. >> and inflicting a lot of pain. jamie bursting into tears, rushing out of the courtroom. making matters even more complicated in this family drama, now the millionaire's billionaire uncle asking the feds to preserve the all of the troubled millionaire's data and phone records, claiming his nephew disappeared under suspicious sirks and that the parties remain hopeful he's alive. as business partners, they struck it rich in a gas well in 2007, selling the company for $2.5 billion. aguilar earned himself about

$180 million from the deal and started spending fast, suffering several psychotic episodes during this time and blowing through about a hundred million dollars in just five years. what's clear now, everybody relied on his largees. >> ellen has been on the gravy train for years. for six of them. have been living off that $180 million. >> reporter: both ellen and guma had been suing the uncle for a bigger share of that gas deal since 2009. court documents show aguilar claimed he wanted his money but was trying to assassinate him. >> kaplan's attorney had no comment. >> you can't underestimate his mental health problem playing into sort of the bizarreness around this case. >> today's court hearing secured most of aguilar's american assets. >> there's clearly a conflict there between jamie and ellen. each are represented by

as a barista among other things when one of her former teachers encouraged her to try out for canadian idol. she placed third but got a record deal. >> they signed me as a folk artist. and then i arrived and i was like i've written a pop record. and they're like what! i know. carly and two writers wrote call me maybe. >> we wanted to use like a modern day, walking on broken glass tile. we were just using different stroumts that you don't normally hear. we had fun creating it. it was one of those joyful processes where you don't think, is it going to work or are people going to like it. we just did what we wanted to do. >> why is it so addictive? >> i don't know. someone once told me, that good songs kind of write themselves and you don't really have anything to do with it. i think that's how we feel about this one.
