good morning. happy birthday america. thanks for joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. what are your plans? raid, fireworks, barbecue? >> all of the above. -- we focus in on san francisco where one of biggest fireworks' viewing area is. let's move down, watch as we head into the evening fog starts to roll in fact ceiling will be four to six hundred feet by 9:30 the entire bay covered in a thin layer of fog 58 to 55°. if you are farther away clear sky and a lot of fireworks. if you are heading to san francisco maybe obscured by the fog that is out there. should be able to see 'em. very light on this independence day.

a live shot of the bay bridge toll, a few headlights into the toll plaza if that is your drive, you should expect light conditions. mass transit today bart sunday schedule, muni and pretty much everyone on sunday and/or holiday schedule no ace train and no alameda harbor bay ferry service either. we begin with developing news from the east bay. the search is on for four oakland children missing and may be in danger. siblings of a 3-year-old boy who was hospitalized this morning with injuries from possible child abuse. amy hollyfield is live at children's hospital oakland with our story itch >> reporter: when police -- when police got to the home they say the little boy had injuries consistent with child abuse. they had been told he was face-down in the bathtub when they got there he was clothed and dry. they were able to revive him with life-threatening

injuries. they think he's related to the four children who are missing. the adults who were arrested won't tell authorities where these kids are. a 4-year-old, a 6-year-old a 7-year-old and a 16-year-old. police want to check on the well-being given the condition of the 3-year-old. this happened at 10:00 yesterday morning in the 900 block of 63rd and north oakland. police arrested the babysitter, mother and step dad, all are in jail but they don't tell police where the other kids are. police think they are likely with relatives they want to check on them if you know anything about these four children and where they are, police are encouraging you to give them a call. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. residents in the small

southern california community of palmdale will be able to celebrate this 4th of july holiday thanks to the quick action of hundreds of firefighters who fought a major battle last night. katie marzullo is live in our breaking news center. >> reporter: right now fire crews are mopping up, they were able to put out the fire a couple hours ago. take a look at these massive flames that resulted around 9:00 last night the hills above palmdale, 50 miles north of los angeles, 150,000 people live in that town. the flames moved fast, burning 250 acres of ranchland. there are homes in the area the flames were moving away from those homes authorities did not order evacuations. 200 firefighters, plus water-dropping helicopters helped in the effort to put out this fire. authorities this morning have not said what they think might have started that large brushfire. 4:34.

san francisco police seized dozens of homemade explosives from a mission district apartment. they say the explosives had the power of 12 1/2 sticks of dynamite. officers arrested 44-year-old jerry lopez yesterday afternoon. detectives searched his home after a tip. investigators say they confiscate a lot of illegal fireworks around the 4th of july, but these device were in a different league. >> severe damage especially to a person even one if it were to ruptured in your hand, you could lose a limb easily or your life. >> police found 63 explosives equivalent to about 12 1/2 sticks of dynamite. >> great, my downstairs neighbors, happy to hear . >> police ordered a shelter in place for the stretch of 22nd while the bomb squad conducted its search. they are not sure if the

devices were intended to be sold. >> oakland parents battling to keep their elementary school open vowing to keep up the fight. last night they returned to lakeview elementary. a group of 30 showed up, including a parent who was arrested earlier in date for refusing to leave. this time protesters did -- did not set up camp. we showed you when police moved in. they are up state lakeview is among four schools closing. protesters had been sleeping at the school since june 15th. city college of san francisco has eight months to show why it should stay in business. the chronicle reports the accrediting commission could vote as soon as next june to take away certification. review of the school says the college has leadership weakness at all levels and has failed to react to ongoing reduced funding. if the school loses its

accreditation it would no longer get public funding under state law. the wife of ross mirkarimi will not testify on his behave in person. eliana lopez seen here, speaking to i-team reporter dan noyes. she agreed to testify at his ethics hearing in the city paid for her round trip plane ticket. mayor lee decided against using taxpayer money for that ticket. instead, lopez will testify by video. the mayor suspended mirkarimi after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. redwood city is bringing back its 4th of july fireworks show tonight after a two year absence. the city had to pull the plug when economic times got tough and the price tag reached more than $70,000. residents and businesses pitched in, they say tonight's 20 minute show of pyrotechnics if the port will be

out at the coast probably no-go anywhere else you will be fine. the last three hours watching the sky over our head it has been relatively quiet. calm conditions everywhere. west wind out at sfo at seven miles per hour north wind concord five. there are clouds lingering along the coast some going to try to spill across the san francisco not sure they will make it farther than that by 7:00. temperatures in the 50s at 7:00. noontime you can see clouds back to the coast everybody in the 60s and 70s, even 80s around antioch and livermore. as we head towards 4:00, temperatures mainly in the 70s and 80s except for oakland, san francisco and half moon bay we still have 60s clouds lingering along the coast at 4:00 they start to push across san francisco by 7:00, 60s there, 70s for the rest of us probably need a light jacket during the evening. temperatures will drop a

president obama leads romney 48% to 44%, the shift comes after two months in which the two were tied in the polls. uptick for the president started before the supreme court's ruling that upheld most of mr. obama's health care plan. president obama will be returning from camp david this morning to celebrate the nation's 236th birthday at the white house. he will deliver remarks at a naturalization ceremony for active duty service members in the east room that will happen this morning at 7:00. tonight the president and the first lady will host a barbecue, concert and view fireworks on the south lawn with military personnel and their families. >> mitt romney will take a break from his vacation to march in a 4th of july parade in new hampshire, not far from his hometown. he was out on a jet ski yesterday while spending time way from the campaign trail with his family. in san jose firefighters say a good samaritan was in

the right place at the right time when he sprang into action and save add elderly woman from a house fire. lisa amin gulezian has details. >> i remember elementary school, firefighters teaching about fire safety. >> reporter: those memories came rushing back at 21-year-old robert sotelo saw this house on fire. you can see the smoke in this photograph. as he approached the burning house, he dialed 911 and saw an elderly woman stage in the doorway, frozen. >> she went into her room it was smokey i hand the phone to my girlfriend and i went entitle >> reporter: running into the burning building and remembering his childhood lesson to stay throat ground foaled the woman into her bedroom. the fire which started in the kitchen was growing. >> came back out for air and then -- i didn't want to pass out. i went back in and helped her out too smokey to come out the front door, so we helped her

anywhere around the stiff vick center traffic once the fair -- around the -- the obama administration is asking the supreme court to settle the legal fight over a law that denies federal been fits to married gay couples. justice department asking the court to hear appeal in its next term of lower court rulings, striking down a portion of the defensive marriage act. doma. the administration agrees with the lower court rulings but wants prompt high court review because president obama has told federal agencies to continue the ban until there's a time court ruling. the earliest the justices might decide to hear the case is late september. arguments would take place over the winter and decision returned by late june 2013. environmentalists welcoming china's announcement it would prohibit officials from serving shark fin soup at
