happy independence day. thanks for waking up early and joining us, i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. a lot of things going on today. what is the weather going to be like? clouds along the coast now some trying to spill across san francisco and touch berkeley and oakland that's as far as they are going to get. good morning. low clouds and fog at dropping to 54 as we head throughout the bay, temperatures are going to be in the 50s and 60s with a lot of cloud cover around san francisco into san pablo bay many inland 60s and clear skies, easier to view the farther you are from the bay into the south bay tonight. holiday light so far. good morning. 80 wet bound into the macarthur maze past golden gate fields moving at the limit. breezing pretty much anywhere

you want to go this morning, definitely holiday light. if you are thinking about mass transit for some of the festivities, bart on a sunday schedule which means they don't get started until 8:00 this morning. everybody on a holiday/sunday schedule no ace train service no alameda harbor bay ferry this morning. developing news this morning. oakland police are looking for four missing children who could be in danger. officers responded to a call monday at a home on 63rd street in north oakland to find a 3-year-old boy severely injured. the missing children are related to that boy. he's in critical condition at children's hospital oakland. the children's mother, stepfather and babysitter have been charged with child abuse and endangerment. in 30 minutes, amy hollyfield will have a lot more on the case. this morning, firefighters are on alert for illegal fireworks. terry mcsweeney joins us live from san jose.

big part of this is safety. >> reporter: it is. a couple things you can count on every 4th of july, the occasional reporter wearing a red, white and blue outfit. also, people setting off fireworks illegal and causing problems. before we get to the problems let's look at why they set them off. skies east san jose last night 11 p.m. this is story and white, they may be illegal, but you can see why people do 'em, they are beautiful and you got the rockets red glare, side effects have the experts concerned such as this captain in the sand jose fire department. >> fireworks -- fireworks are illegal in the city of san jose. there could be a large fine and/or jail time associated with it. it is a recipe for disaster especially when you are playing with fireworks right mere near the grew grass.

sky 7 hd was over the san a few minutes after it started near the waldo tunnel above 101. it only burned one acre. now a 40-year-old san francisco man is under address -- under arrest. no sanctioned fireworks displays are being held in oakland today. police are preparing for the annual illegal display. the oakland police department is reminding residents that the use of fireworks and celebratory gunfire to mark the holiday is not only dangerous, but illegal. this year, patrol units will be using their shot spotter equipment in a new way updated software will allow disafterers to distinguish between gunfire -- dispatchers to distinguish between gunfire and fireworks. in san francisco police say the illegal firecracker trade is down sharply this year in chinatown. one big reason, buyers turning

to websites like craigslist for their pyro techniques. democratic leaders in the state lay tour spending -- spending part of this 4th of july to secure votes needed to fund high speed rail. vote tentatively set for tomorrow in the senate. governor brown pushing lawmakers to authorize 2.7 billion dollars worth of voter approved bonds for construction of the first 130 miles of the system. it would stretch from madeira to bakersfield. some lawmakers are skeptical about the cost and building the first segment in the sand joaquin valley. 6:06. sutter health nurses east bay and peninsula will be locked out of their jobs until sunday following their one-day strike. drivers honk horns in support of the striking nurses. this marks the fifth time

physicists claim they've discovered a new particle consistent with the long sought higgs boson known as

the god particle. it is believed to give all matter in the universe mass like electron and neutron. this morning physicists in switzerland told scientists their data has reached the level of certainty needed for discovery. but, they have not yet confirmed that the new particle is indeed the tiny and elusive higgs boson. apple hoping to make a big splash with mini ipad. it will have a smaller 7 to 8 screen and won't have the high-def screen on the latest ipad. it will compete with google's nexus 7 and amazon's kindle fire also selling for 199 no comment from apple. ongoing severe weather on the east coast interrupted dress rehearsal for one of the country's biggest 4th of july celebrations.

the national symphony orches$r had to cut short rehearsal last night after thunderstorms moved in. the crowd watching the rehearsal walking away there for safety. the orchestra was practicing for tonight's capital 4th celebration which brings hundreds of thousands of people to the national mall. the orchestra returned to the stage about an hour later hopefully they won't face the same situation tonight. this is a live picture of the capital, national mall there sunny, warm, mike do they have some of those same worries? >> i don't think so. nice to see them file out orderly and not panic and get out of the way. you can see cool front maybe moved in cooler today maybe not as much humidity, maybe the giants won't be wilting in the heat. >> that would be nice. >> we hope. >> south bay's competitive food king is in brooklyn, new york preparing to defend his coney island crown. joey chestnut weighed in at 218 pounds ahead of this morning's 97th annual nathan's independence day hot dog marathon. there's the stare-down the competitors must have before they eat all those dogs. he's going for his sixth consecutive victory. chestnut is defending his record, 68 franks and buns, devoured. joey says he's well aware he's in for a real dogfight. oregon dog, the real one is back with her owner after a cliffside rescue. 2-year-old pit bull named daisy reunited with her owner last night. it follows a cliffside rescue earlier in the day, daisy ended up on the cliff in a

outside children's hospital oakland. >> reporter: police say the boy who is here has injuries consistent with child abuse. when they got to the home they had been told he was face down in the tub. when they got there he was dry and clothed. they were able to revive him, they brought him to children's he's facing life-threatening injuries. they believe he's related to the four kids who are missing. the adults who they arrested won't tell police where these kids are. they are a 4-year-old, she suffers from epilepsy. a 6-year-old, a 7-year-old, and a 16-year-old. police want to check on their well-being given the condition that the 3-year-old was in. this happened around 10:00 yesterday morning in the 900 block of 63rd street north oakland police arrested the babysitter, mom and stepfather. they are all in jail, won't

say where the other kids are. police think they are likely with relatives but want to check on them. they are trying to get pictures so you can see who you are looking for. ' at least wanted the names out there if you know who these kids are or where they are, police call police. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. 6:33. san francisco police ceased dozens of homemade -- police seized dozens of homemade explosives from an apartment. officers arrested 44-year-old jerry lopez yesterday afternoon on felony charges. detectives searched his home after getting a tip from a concerned neighbor. investigators say they confiscated a lot of illegal fireworks around the 4th of july but these devices are in a different league. >> severe damage special there to a person even one of these explosive devices if it were to have exploded in your hand,

you could lose a limb easily or your life. >> police found 63 explosives equivalent to about 12 1/2 sticks of dynamite. >> great, that's my downstairs neighbors, happy to hear that. >> police ordered a shelter in place for the stretch of 22nd street while the bomb squad conducted its search. they are not sure if those devices were intended to be sold. bay area authorities on alert today and tonight for people using illegal fireworks. we saw these fireworks set off in an east san jose neighborhood late last night. the display lasted several minutes. fireworks or dangerous and illegal. firefighters say they can easily ignite a fire in dry grass. anyone caught using them can land in jail or face a stiff fine. if you are looking for a list of legal fireworks shows around the bay area g to abc7news.com click on see it on tv. in southern california fire crews mopping up a

wildfire they were able to put out early this morning. look at the flames they had to deal with, which erupted 9:00 last night in the hills above palmdale, 50 miles north of los angeles. the flames moved fast burning 250 acres of ranch land. there are homes in the area, no houses were threatened no word on a cause. city challenge san francisco has eight months to show why it should stay in business. the chronicle reports the accrediting commission for community and junior colleges could vote to take away certification. a review says the college leadership has weakness at all levels and has failed to raebg to ongoing reduced funding. if the school loses it is accreditation it would no longer receive public funding understate law. city colleges more than 90,000 students enroll ofed -- enrolled. >> the wife of sheriff ross mirkarimi will testify but it won't be in person.

eliana lopez has been in venezuela since march. she agreed to testify at mirkarimi's hearing if the city paid for her round-trip plane ticket. the chronicle reports mayor lee decided against using taxpayer money for that ticket, instead lopez will testify by video. the mayor suspended mirkarimi after he pled guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. oakland parents battling to keep their neighborhood elementary school open are vowing to keep up the fight. last night they returned to lakeview elementary school, less than 12 hours after police cleared them out. a group of about 30 showed up, including a parent who was arrested earlier in the day for refusing to leave this time, protesters did not set up camp. we showed you when police first moved in to clear the occupiers live on the morning news yesterday as it was unfolding. parents are upset that lakeview elementary is one of five schools closing. protesters have been sleeping at the school since june 15th.

in the east bay police searching for two robbers who sold an expensive -- who stole an expensive bike from a cyclist at gunpoint from the oakland hills. the professor was riding on a popular cycling route last friday in redwood regional park when he was robbed by two suspects, they took his necklace and his expense bike. >> in that park it is very uncommon i can think of the last time we had a robbery be it armed robbery. >> news of the strong arm robbery is spreading throughout the cycling community many are warning others to ride in groups and stay vigilant. 6:37. 4th of july a lot of plans, right, barbecue, parade, perhaps fireworks. and the , that is going to be the big question. >> depends on where you are mike? >> absolutely. coast into san francisco tough, everybody else should be okay so the farther you are away from the water the bay area --

tour in ohio and pennsylvania. new this morning from afghanistan. nato says several of its troops are wounded after a man in an afghan army uniform opened fire earlier this morning in the eastern ward act province. nato is releasing few details but saying the service members are being treated. nato is not saying what happen to the man who opened fire. >> also new, late palestinian president yasser arafat may have been murdered by poisoning. a swiss institute announced this morning, traces of the almost polonium have been found in his belongings. loan yum is rare and highly radioactive. his -- polonium is rare and highly radioactive. his widow is calling for his body to be exhumed. 6:47. good news if you are will be driving somewhere this 4th of july. >> a lot of people will be driving.

bloomberg business report. 6:48 now. for the first time ever, americans will soon be able to buy an at home hiv test. the fda gave its approval to the test people swab upper and lower gums and place the sample into a vial. the results are available in 20 to 40 minutes. the manufacturer says a positive result doesn't necessarily mean somebody is infected but that additional testing should be done by a doctor. free coffee this 4th of july holiday? today starbucks is offering a free tall coffee at all locations in a special campaign called indivisible. the ceo wants to spark conversations over coffee on putting it is eventship above partisanship. asking people to tweet ideas to solve america's problems, blog about people who make a difference or make a video on how you made your american dream come true all using the hash tag indivisible.
