i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. breaking us in the east bay. several people have been sent to the hospital after a traffic accident on the island of alameda. >> police tell us they are all under 18. fran sting ding with the latest. -- frances dinglasan with the latest. >> it happened around 1:45 this morning. the investigators are heading to the scene right now island drive is closed south of robert davie, jr.. this is right along the alameda municipal golf course. is going to be shutdown until 10:00 this morning. we'll keep you posted. we'll also check out waze for you. traffic friday light so far. here's a live shot of the bay bridge toll not affecting freeways on 880 and alameda oakland area. in developing news, a few hours from now we expect to hear what happened in the

moments leading up to a deadly horse racing accident at the alameda fair. lilian kim has the story from the fairgrounds. >> reporter: jorge herrera was riding in the time race of the day when he was then from his mount. herrera's horse 4-year-old morito clipped the heels of another horse, morito stumbled and herrera was left on the ground with massive head injuries with >> was either trampled by his horse or another horse. >> reporter: april mitchell is the spokesperson for the fair. she says paramedics tended to herrera right away. >> as our normal safety protocol dictates we had an ambulance that was following the race so emergency personnel responded immediately >> reporter: but herrera was unable to survive, he died two hours later. according -- herrera had 55

minutes and. -- fair organizers say this is the first a jockey has died here since 1975. >> obviously, this incident is deeply saddens us and we hope people still come out to the horse racing and enjoy the fair. like i said this is a very rare incident doesn't happen often at all. racing will continue. >> reporter: fair organizers say they plan to hold some kind of memorial in honor of herrera by the time the fair closes sunday. lilian kim, abc7 news. police in santa clara county investigating shooting death of 3-year-old boy in what they say appears to be an accident the shooting happened inside the boy's home around 6:00 last night. the dispatch reports the boy either accidentally shot himself with a handgun or was

accidentally shot by a friend who was playing with a gun. police confirmed the boy was the son of a san jose police officer. terry mcsweeney will have a live report in our next half hour. santa clara county prosecutors filed charges against five members of the same family accuse them of neglecting residents of the care home they ran. you can see four suspects, all free on bond. the police department says the home operated without a state license. investigators say the dozen residents of the home were dependent, nonenglish speaking asian immigrants who were beaten, malnurished and forbidden from using toilet paper. police found the home covered with animal feces from nearly 50 dogs that wandered the home. >> this is tragic because you are taking advantage of the most vulnerable segment of our kpaopb people who cannot take care of themselves -- of our

community, people who cannot take care of themselves and you subject them to scale lore and deplorable conditions and take -- squalor and deplorable conditions and take advantage of them. >> police are asking peep in the community to come forward if they have -- asking people in the community to come forward they have information. sfo reporting two laser strikes on commercial aircrafts last night as each plane made its approach into the airport. airline officials say the laser strikes came from palo alto and pointed at virgin airlines flight from chicago and a united airlines express flight from calgary. no arrests, no one was hurt and the fbi and the faa are looking into the incident. today the state senate will decide whether to appropriate nearly five billion dollars in voter approved bonds for california's controversial high speed rail. yesterday the assembly approved legislation which

would get the first segment started in the central valley and modernize existing systems. it is expected to be a more contentious vote in the senate some democrats are planning to vote no because other programs such as social services have been cut. in an hour the labor department will release the june jobs report. economists predict employers added 90,000 jobs last month. they expect the unemployment rate to remain at 8.2%. the economy added only an average of 73,000 jobs in april and may. some analysts are optimistic after the labor department announced yesterday that weekly benefit applications dropped by if 14,000. california's rate is 10.9%. lawyers will begin phraoegd the city of stockton's bankruptcy case in court today. -- they filed for chapter 9 protection last week after failing to reach a deal on a 26 million dollar deficit.

stockton officials want a judge to approve a budget that allows the city to cut employee wages. at least one creditor says it will fight the bankrupcy. antioch officials will soon consider reopening offices fridays. antioch's fiscal situation has improved slightly. some lawmakers want to end friday furloughs that started three years ago to save money. the manager says the council plans to discuss the possibility of increasing weekly hours for employees back to 40 this summer. >> in san carlo -- [ unintelligible ] the city's fire chief sent a memo yesterday saying occasionally closing the station is a short term solution until six entry level firefighters are hired. let's get a look at that weather forecast.

about the case. peterson claim the overwhelming publicity, incorrect court rulings and other mistakes deprived him of a fair trial. a mother being held on child abuse. witnesses saw a mother in phoenix, arizona pour beer into her son's cup and the boy drinking some of it. they called police who came and determined the liquid was consistent with beer. the boy checked out unharmed and now in his father's care. officers state mother admits to having giving her son beer because he kept reaching for the pitcher. florida lifeguard fired after rescuing a swimmer is being offered his job back. he was let go, he broke a company rule by leaving his section of the beach. the 21-year-old says the man was drowning outside the zone his company was hired to watch. the head of the company says firing lopez was wrong. what willow% do? >> i hum -- what willow% do? >> i humbly decline, another

saved by the three pilots up to 20 seconds before impact. air france and the plane's manufacturer airbus face manslaughter charges in connection with the accident. two members of congress calling on the maker of a popular suv to educate owners about a potentially dangerous condition. many call it the death wobble shaking in the front that makes the car shimmy violently. an investigation revealed more than 600 complaints. mostly on jeep wranglers. in a letter to the makers of jeep south bay congresswoman and a representative henry waxman calling for outreach campaign notifying customers of the risk and providing possible solutions for repairing and the problem. chrysler says its vehicles meteor exceed standards and have excellent safety records. the automaker did not say if it will contact customers.

amy hollyfield heading to the scene. elsewhere, friday light nothing like yesterday bay bridge toll delay-free no problems on the lower deck either. nice ride across the san mateo bridge westbound on the right drive time 14 minutes from 880 to 101, eastbound light into hayward and with the waze traffic app there is an accident in the mountain view area on the on-ramp to north 101, 101 still flowing well up the peninsula. three east bay police departments are turning thumbs down on plans to buy an armored vehicle. police say the vehicle similar to this is not the best choice for a university setting. the vehicle is a bear cat 4 x 4 cost about $170,000. activists complain the armored vehicle could be used to put down peaceful protests.
