a terrifying moment for fremont man on the water. a shark attacked his kayak in the waters off santa cruz. good evening, i'm ama daetz. >> alan: i'm alan wang. in the bay area it was a great day to be at the beach until word of a shark attack went around. the attack happened off the coast of capitola at pleasure point. we sent lisa amin gulezian there to check it out. >> lisa: the attack happened a mile out in the water, just southeast of where i'm standing right now. it's a very popular spot for surfers, fisherman and of course kayakers. this morning, a 52-year-old man

from fremont launched his kayak from cap to -- cap to lapeer, and then he saw a shark silhouette in the water and moments later it attacked. the shark's tail pushed the back of the kayak into the air and bit the front of the kayak. it threw the okay can user out of the boat and into the open water, where some people in a small fishing boat saw the whole thing and came rushing to his rescue. >> he was definitely affected by it. i think was just more or less a type of shock, recovering from getting thrown from the boat, and his decision, as he told me, was to climb back on the kayak, but he sensed the power boat coming in fast, and he just swam as fast as he could to the boat and they pulled him out. >> the harbor patrol and state park rangers have been alerted. word is spreading about the attack but it's not stopping people from going into the

water. insure. >> it's kind of what sharks do they cruise around all day biting stuff, and i want necessarily call that an attack. that's more like shark behavior. so, i think that's what we're seeing is shark behavior. >> and the kayaker is at home resting in fremont tonight. i did speck with the investigator who pulled the kayak out of the water, and he says he found a small shark tooth fragment imbedded in the side of it. he thinks it was a 14-18-foot long great white shark. live in capitola, lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. am. that will put anybody in shock. more record-high temperatures for much of the u.s. today is supposed to be the peak of the heat wave and cooler temperatures on the way tomorrow, but that's little comfort for those stuck in the sweltering heat. >> reporter: it's the heat wave and it's deadly crest. >> you wish you could have known and helped them out in some way, but what are you going to do? >> reporter: the chicago and

81-year-old woman died here where she lived without air conditioning. not far away, man died in the heat of this building. >> what's it like in there if you don't have air conditioning? >> it's like an oven. it's like being in a microwave or something. >> reporter: city workers went door to door checking on the elderly. >> extreme heat and humidity are more than just an inconvenience. they are dangerous and in some cases can be deadly. >> reporter: 22 states are under heat warnings or advisories, leaving 1,115,000,000 of us at the -- 115 million at the mercy of the temperatures. >> any shoe melt. >> the sand was burning my feet even with flip-flops on. it was hot. >> these people have the right idea. but runners like these in cleveland better be careful. >> people can get dehydrated from heat exhaustion, and the more serious symptoms are

crimestoppers is offering $10,000 as a reward in that case. an hour before that, police say an argument between two minute ended in gunfire in a garage in east oakland. the suspect has been arrested. >> a baby-sitter is facing child abuse charges in oakland and is now free on bail. the 24-year-old was baby-sitting a three imrierld who is now in critical can be. she was released from jail after post 1-g 10,000s in bail. police say the called nine one one from this apartment monday, saying she found the bone aloe and unresponsive. and he apparently had a liver laceration caused by blunt force trauma. the child's mother and stepfather war arrested but released after the d.a. said there was insufficient evidence to charge them. three other children relate thoad baby-sitter and a boy's parents were found safe. >> morgan hill residents are raising money to look for the missing teen. this car wash is the idea of her

friends who want to contribute in some way. searchers have to be 18 years old and many of her friends are too young. >> it's important because we haven't given up finding sierra. we still have hopes we're going to find her alive. we want to find clues that might lead us to her if she is with somebody else. there's lots of possibilities. >> alan: 60 people were out searching for sierra today. the 15-year-old girl has been missing since march 16 in a man has been arrested and charged with heir kidnapping and murder but is denying the charges. >> a ceremony was held to remember those at a potter's field. many of those who attended are family members hoff those believed burredy at the site. the site was discovered in a construction site. the names were not recorded but

towards a gas station before a light poll stopped it. the truck's brakes failed. two works at the gas station ran and shut off the gas pumps to prevent them from exploding and a woman nearby helped to rush to rescue a passenger. amazingly no one was seriously hurt. >> alan: back in san francisco. commuters who use the muni lines have to find another way to get around this weekend. that's because construction has shut done the n line on carl street between willard street. the j church line is out of service on church street between reservoir and 14th. and get ready for three more weekend shut downs. part of a project to replace old raillines. >> ama: we're learning of a malicious attack that killeds hundreds if that nouns thousands of peas. vandals used tree limbs and smash and knock over beehive boxes. the farm is run by volunteers and provides a hands-on

temperatures just soared inland. behind me our live doppler -- live high definition mt. tamalpais camera, and you can clearly see the fog is slowly inching towards the bay and that's going to cool us down tomorrow. live doppler 7hd picking up a little bit of the fog. you can see near salinas. down to close to the golden gate bridge some is so thin that radar is not picking it up but all of it will move inland overnight. so a cloudy start for sunday morning. man, it's hot. 96 in antioch. 62 in san francisco. half moon bay, 55. and these temperatures well above where we were yesterday. in some locations as much as 13 degrees above where you were friday afternoon. so, the coastal clouds move inland overnight. slightly cooler day tomorrow,

and then some of the heat from the midwest is going migrate towards the bay area so get ready for hot temperatures inland next week. lows tonight in the 50s. antioch, up ever 90s right now. probably dip down to low 60s, and the fog base will sit near the coast, and you can get a sense how density -- density is. so slightly cooler tomorrow, but getting back to the midwest heat wave, the bubble of hot air is going slowly start to move back towards the bay area, as we get into tuesday and wednesday. with interior east bay temperatures hovering in the upper 90s. possibly even near 100 degrees. so, enjoy the slight cooling tomorrow. 0 for -- 90 for fairfield. oakland, 70. north bay, santa rows -- santa
