delicious, right? yeah. it's the honey, it makes it taste so... ♪ well, would you look at the time... what's the rush? be happy. be healthy. >> in the news this sunday morning, july 8th, breaking news. all lanes of highway 101 in san mateo have reopened following a fatal accident. the almeda county fair will have a special honor for jockey jorge herrera following a fall. >> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. only carolyn tyler. let's get started with a quick first look at the weather from our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. you see the fog behind you and from vollmer peak a pretty site. we have the clear sky inland but

low fog and clouds have allowed for mist and drizzle if you are headed over the golden gate bridge. it is a gray start and it will be for most areas it will about 10:00. then the fog burns back. it will be banked up along the shoreline, allowing for a stronger sea breeze, up to 20 miles an hour today. so that will bring the numbers down just a bit. we are talking about upper 50s to low 60s for the noontime hours in our inland valleys and then by the afternoon a return to some 90s but it's low 90s for concord and danville today. but we will be looking at a cooler day at our coast. the big question is are we going to see the heat come back? i'll let you know in a little bit. carolyn. >> we begin with breaking news in san mateo where southbound highway 101 is open again a fatal multi-car crash near east popular avenue. this is the scene of that collision that occurred just before 1:00 this morning, blocking the four left lanes. one person died at the scene. one other suffered life-threatening injuries.

the chp kept four lanes closed for nearly three hours to investigate. they reopened those lanes and lifted the traffic alert about an hour ago just before 4:00. this relentless heat wave in many parts of the nation is expected to lift today but not before taking several lives. after for example, in indiana a baby girl died after being left in car in 105-degree heat. she is one of the 30 people who died from the record-setting heat that is churching the nation. chuck severson has the latest. >> the extreme heat was blamed for a transformer fire in midtown, manhattan saturday that could have turned into a major disaster. a manhole exploded, igniting a mini van and soon flames engulfed a busy street corner, climbing 15 stories up the side of an apartment building. >> the car was completely in

flames. and black smoke up to the top of the building. >> 22 states were under heat advisory saturday, affecting 115 million americans. >> i am like suffering and not forming coherent thoughts and i kind of wander around. >> even if you made the best of it, the drought-like conditions are driving up food prices for everyone. less than half the u.s. corn crop is in good condition. vegetables farmers in wisconsin, cattle farmers in oklahoma. both say the heat will cause the food to rise. >> i've had to sell off capital assets, it's either it is that or watch the animals rise. >> the heat index will still be brutal in many nations. by monday there will be relief. temperatures in the 80s. but first more severe wet weather, rain, hail and winds that could reach near hurricane strength have put the mid-atlantic region alert. abc news, new york. >> tomorrow you may discover you

are among tens of thousands internet users who will get knocked off the web. hackers planted what's called malware and made a fortune until the fbi arrested them. abc7 reports why the impact will be felt tomorrow who what you can do to make sure your computer doesn't get knocked off line. >> hackers in estonia affected hundreds of computers worldwide. if you were infected, the men you tried to go to a website you will be direct today a malware site. >> this was malware that would either steal their money or put up ads and the government shut them down. >> the operation began in 2007. originally they infected some 4 million computers in 100 countries, according to the fbi. they managed to make about $14 million, you which

technology consultant larry said was their goal all along. >> there was a lot of money made. they were basically displaying ads to people who wouldn't normally see those ads and you do that for millions you make a lot of money. >> they were arrested last year in operation ghost click. as they went to shut them down, agents realized it would kick infected computers off the web so the fbi installed their own clean servers to keep people on line. monday they shut them down. anyone who has not cleaned up their computers will be thrown off their i.p. addresses. he said since the fbi investigation, the problem is no longer as large as it was in 2007. >> i think most people are going to be just fine. it's a very tiny percentage of the population, probably 100th or a thousands of the percent of people in the u.s. are infected. >> approximately 64,000 computers are still infected in the u.s. there are a number ever sites available to check to see whether your computer is infected or not. they will also direct you to fix-it sites. >> if you still haven't checked your computer, go to abc7news.com and click "see it on tv." there are three sites listed you can visit to check to see if

your computer is infected and how to cure it. in the newsroom,, abc7 news. >> this morning a shark warning remains for the santa cruz coast after a kayaker was attacked. it happened off pleasant point yesterday morning. the 52-year-old kayaker said he was in water 42 feet outside the kelp beds when it happened. here's what the kayak looked like after the attack. the shark left a piece after tooth embedded in it. the police officers estimate the shark is a 14 to 18-foot great white and here's what the kayaker told investigators. >> he felt a tremendous bump to the back of the kayak that listed it actually out of the water. at the same time simultaneously he saw the head on the front of the kayak taking a bite of the kayak. he was subsequently thrown into the water. >> a boat happened to be nearby and the kayaker swam to that boat. he was in shock, but otherwise okay.

authorities say there are great white sharks off of santa cruz. but they usually stay in deeper waters. race at the almeda county fair in pleasanton will be dedicated to the memory of a jockey who died after a freak accident in a race thursday. in the eighth race the 33-year-old jockey jorge her herrera was thrown off a horse that clipped heels in another horse. he suffered major head injuries and died two hours later at a hospital. according to the racing site bloodhorse.com, they have now agreed to staff the track's ambulance with a licensed paramedic and additional life support equipment, this after the jockey's guild raised concerns they did not reach herrera for ten to twenty minutes. the license did not require a paramedic at the racetrack because they were already on duty as part of the fair. >> this morning san francisco police are investigating a

shooting that injured a 17-year-old. it happened at the corner of san bruno avenue and felton street just after 5:30 a.m.. police say the teenager was standing with a family member when they heard gunshots the victim was shot in the chest. his condition is not known. a suspect was seen running away. investigators say it's unclear whether the teenager was the intended target. >> come up next, massachusetts congressman barney frank makes history with his marriage. and a bay area mom gives back. her role3q it's like chicken and crunchy stuff got married! i only use french's french fried onions on my crunchy onion chicken because it's america's number one brand. just minutes to make, then bake!

72-year-old massachusetts congressman barney frank married his long time partner, 42-year-old jan brady, in a ceremony last night near boston. he becomes the first member of congress to legally marry in a same-sex ceremony. this is congressman frank arriving at the boston marriott hotel for the ceremony. he's a democrat who is retiring after representing the fourth congressional district for more than three decades. frank is the openly gay member of congress. his husband runs a small handyman business in maine. he's also a photographer. frank tried to keep the wedding a secret, but word got out and some 300 friends, family and colleagues attended last night's ceremony, including san francisco congresswoman nancy pelosi. >> those of us who have known barney for a long time and who consider him a treasured friend, this is just a day to celebrate. this is a wonderful marriage and two great people, and so i'm just thrilled to be here. when president obama announced his support of gay marriage, congressman frank called it, quote, a sign that things have evolved.

golden gate bridge. slightly carolina today on the order of maybe two to four degrees. instead of the mid-90s from con core to danville today, some lower 90s. with a little cooling today we will continue that into tomorrow. but looks like a piece of that heat coming our way from the middle of the country. right now our water vapor imagery shows that twist right here off the central coast that's allowing for us to day a little bit of at edge off the heat in the inland valleys. the low clouds and fog up to about 1500 feet this morning, traveling to the east, allowing for a great start and stronger sea breeze, up to 20 miles an hour, bringing numbers into the mid-50s san francisco. if you are headed to the jazz festival, it will be sunny later on in the afternoon and temperatures about two degrees cooler there. four degrees cooler around san jose today. enjoy it today and tomorrow because by tuesday and wednesday this area of high pressure lulled westward and that will bring mid-to upper 90s in our

inland valleys, near one hundred perhaps for the warmest day on wednesday. and the central valley where they have already been sweating it out from fresno to sacramento valley, could reach record levels of 109 degrees in fresno no. but today mother nature helping out and allowing for a little bit of a break. if you are headed to oakland today lots of sunshine for the a's game with numbers in the upper 60s by the early afternoon and low 70s with the sea breeze kicking up. it should be a beautiful day and hopefully a win for the a's. back home we are looking another numbers about four degrees cooler in the south bay that. means san jose instead of 88, about 84 today. 82 in sunnyvale on on the peninsula. notice the mid-70s. and 80 mountain view. we are coming out of the upper 60s around redwood city. morning clouds and some mist and drizzle daly city, but mid-60s later on this afternoon for san francisco. 83 in sonoma but you have to go well north to clear lake to get to the mid-90s.

developing news, a earthquake 4.2 hit around fort bragg after 5:00 this morning. the usgs said it it was centered three miles northwest of fort bragg in mendocino county. so far there are no reports of damage or injuries. the shaking was also felt in willis and ukiah. the fbi is trying to find out who aimed lasers at two jets landing in san francisco on thursday, temporarily blinding the pilots. it is not a harmless prank. the faa warning the results could be deadly. lisa stark reports. >> they are distracting and dangerous. here a laser was pointed right at a police helicopter. >> got him. >> in that recent incident in san francisco two commercial pilots coming in to land had lasers aimed at them. >> the lasers almost right underneath us right now. >> in may it was two flights

landing in salt lake city who were targets. >> that's just a simulation. with a camera flash. but laser expert patrick murphy also showed us the real thing. >> okay. is everything clear down there? >> at an airport outside washington d.c. we pointed a simple $50 laser at a small plane a quarter mile away. this was the cockpit windshield. >> so that's when the beam looks brightest, when it's coming toward you. >> last year there were 3,592 reported incidents, up 27% from the year before. >> people have had lasers shined at them as they are trying to land the planes? >> absolutely. every day in the u.s. someone gets a laser shined at them. >> some aiming at the commercial jets and small planes are trying to do harm. others think it's just a joke. >> those convicted can face fines of over $11,000 for each incident. and criminal penalties are

$250,000 and five years in jail. despite that, it's a growing problem that shows no signs of burning out. lisa stark, abc news, in virginia. and garcia torres, the man charged with murdering missing teenager sierra lamar, will be back in court on tuesday. her body has not been found. yesterday her friends held a car wash to raise money to help continue the search. you have to be at least 18 to join a search, so sierra's younger friends organized the car wash. >> we are happy it's going on. even people under 18 can help. it's just proves that we aren't giving up. and i'm sure nobody is going to give up. >> the fund for information leading to sierra has grown to $35,000.

>> bow keepers had thousands of bees die in an attack on a farm. >> thousands of honeybees now swarm around hayes valley farm in the heart of the city. this is where they can rebuild themselves over the next few months. >> put them into new boxes. we just confirmed that they both lost their queens so they are able to make new queens. >> the last colony was moved here this weekend from the farm near the heights. >> bee keepers say the vandals used a chunk of concrete, what they call urbanite to do the damage. >> these pictures from the facebook page so show what keepers found after vandals struck. there are bits and pieces thrown everywhere and littered among the debris was dead bees. >> the platform was littered with dead bodies. >> are we talking hundreds? >> oh, more than hundreds,

probably thousands. >> it was a bit of a shock to the alameda county farm managers because they say they have a good relationship with the neighborhood. there are a few hives that will remain there from other bee keepers but moving so many from hayes valley is sad news. >> we need bees and butterflies and other pollinators to poll nature our crops. having less here isn't great. we would like to have more bees. >> the move is a return to hayes valley. two years ago they were moved because someone attacked the bees with pesticides. bee keepers might return if they can build a chain link fence around their platforms. abc7 news. >> this week the city of santa cruz takes up a measure to ban single-use plastic bags by retailers and also continues a sweeping ban on the sale of foam and styrene products. plastic bag makers plan to sue over the proposed ban, which includes the sale of foam and styrene coolers, toys, even

packing materials. if the council gives its initial approval on tuesday, both proposals would come up again for a second review scheduled for july 24th. the bans on plastic bags and foam containers come as the cities struggle with how to reduce litter in waterways, landfills, streets and parks. marin county supervisors are considering raising garbage rates for unincorporated neighborhoods near mill valley and tiberon. on tuesday we review a plan calling for 8.4% increase in monthly garbage fees. that brings the typical bill for a 32-gallon garbage can up $1.83 over what the five hundred affected customers are paying now. construction is set to continue on a san jose hospital expansion project following service force -- services for the hundreds of

people buried on that site in a potter's field for more than a century. a prayer service was held at santa clara county medical center where an estimated 1400 people are buried. in february construction crews uncovered a number of unmarked pine boxes. research showed a potter's field was there with people who did not have loved ones to claim them were buried. >> many others had families that couldn't afford a burial service. but whatever the circumstances, today is our opportunity to offer a prayer and honor them. about 100 coffins in direct line of construction are going to be moved, but the others will remain in their resting place. county officials have hired an archaeologist to try to identify them. straight ahead, heads up. the gps displays that pilots use are now coming to the windshield of your car. >> and here is a live look from

enjoy yourself. leavessa argen will be along with the accuweather forecast in just a few. from mobile phones to gps services we are constantly bombarded with potential distractions while driving. but emerging technology is hoping to put all of that on your windshield. the hope is that will keep your eyes on the road. in this morning's assignment 7 report, dan ashley shows us the bay area company that's hoping to change what you see when you drive. this video of an s-18 fighter jet on youtube shows how pilots use a heads-up display to land a plane on an aircraft carrier. it's technology that's gone mainstream from commercial jets to your car. >> it's a great feature that allows the driver to keep his eyes on the road while receiving important information. >> eyes on the road, hands on the wheel. this is technology that enables people to do that.

>> heads-up displays on cars aren't new. general motors first started using them in 1998. and bmw has offered it on select models since 2006. it is a relatively simple concept, really. information like the vehicle's speed is projected on to the windshield from a device mounted in the dashboard. it's only visible within the driver's line of sight. the equipment adds around $1,000 to the price, but the benefits may be priceless. >> distracted driving is a growing problem. whether it's from cell phones, eating behind the wheel, putting on makeup for portable gps devices. in 2010 the u.s. department of transportation reported 3100 people were killed and more than 400,000 injured in car crashes involving distracted drivers. >> 290,000 drivers reported that their gps device caused an accident or a near miss. carmakers say putting that information on the windshield keeps the driver's eyes on the road. >> it is safe because it does display an image within the driver's line of sight going

down the road. but it's not displayed in a way that's distracting. >> and the silicon valley company think it's found a way to make the gps displays better. >> with virtual cable you basically look at it with peripheral vision. >> the virtual cable is a 3-d translucent line in the sky for the drivers to follow. the plaintiff, mvs california, provided this video of it in action. >> it's sort of like a third lane marker in the sky. >> it is military-grade technology scaled down, made for real people. it's capable of projecting miles ahead of the drivers, and can even highlight businesses along the way. >> carmakers and car drivers are really eager for something that helps them find their way that's up and ahead of them rather than down and in front. >> the technology was so groundbreaking, mvs california recently won an award in the european satellite navigation competition. a first for an american company. the international notoriety has attracted the attention of auto makers. >> if you see it on the street, chances are we are talking to them. >> carmakers say heads-up

live doppler 7 hd allowing for a few low clouds and fog to be picked up here offshore. and once again today, the marine layer will be banked up along the shoreline. but we will be looking at a stronger push throughout the afternoon. that will mix things up a little bit. 58 in san jose. we have the clouds all the way down to the south bay on the peninsula. 55 san carlos and even mist and drizzle as you head into the city. 49 santa rosa. feeling pretty good up north. the low clouds and fog this morning into parts of the east bay. not all the way into our east bay valleys. slightly cooler today. maybe two to five degrees of cooling and the low clouds up to about 1300 feet deep. but by later on tomorrow we will look for another pleasant afternoon. then the changes occur. we have this one hurricane, and we are looking at daniel weakening, but another one on its heels. it's just a tropical storm. it's amelia but it's continuing

to strengthen in the cooler waters of the pacific. we are talking about a upper level trough. that's benefiting and cooling us off today. it's right there and it will continue to slide to the north and east. once we get behind it that's when we will look for the warmup. between now and tuesday we are talking about the low clouds, the fog pulling back, bringing in slightly cooler day today. our east bay valleys still a few low 90s, but they are farther to the east. so we will look at more heat, of course, in sacramento and the san joaquin valley. elsewhere plenty of 70s closer to the bay and about 80 in fremont today. that's down from yesterday's readings. the bubble of high pressure headed our way by the early to middle part of the week, bringing a return to mid-90s, near 100 degrees on wednesday. and for folks, our friends here in the valley, we are talking record heat, up to 110 degrees possible in press no by wednesday. -- in fresno by wednesday.

and 100 in yosemite maybe. still lot there. and 78 in fremont today. you are coming down about four, five degrees, as well as san jose. oakland 70 and morgan hill upper 80s today. lots of fog around the central coast right now. you are waking up to the gray sky in oakland but later on this afternoon with more sunshine it will be a pleasant day with numbers topping out in the lower 70s with that sea breeze, and then overnight we will see more low clouds and fog. tomorrow a pretty nice afternoon and it's into tuesday and wednesday when the heat comes back. it won't last long, though. that's got thing. we aren't looking at an extended period of record heat around here but we could see maybe a few records. >> still, it's a good-looking forecast as soon as this stuff clears up. >> right. >> thanks, lisa. >> the group known as occupy the farm is planning to protest tomorrow before a public hearing on development plans on the gill tract in albany.

the group returned to the land which is owned by u.c. berkeley yesterday. they say they were only there to harvest crops they planted three months ago. the occupy are there. occupy poster art went on display yesterday at the center for the arts. abc7 arts and entertainment reporter don sanchez shows us images of the movement. they are striking. bold, bright, big. political posters that originated at the beginning of the occupy movement. being installed for this exhibition. artists and graphic designers created almost instant art but they never expect it had to wind up in a gallery like this. >> that's what, you know, exhibition spaces, and it is to bring the work to the public in a different context so we can look at them as art and we can look at their visual power and we can look at their style. >> twenty-five bay area art he

was are showing here. betty first look at images on line because the gallery works with the internet a lot. she chose 80 designs and narrowed them down to 50 for the show. she's impressed by the aesthetics of the works. she believes whether a visitor to the gallery praises or condemns the occupy movement, this is a testimony to the power the images can have and they present a perspective. >> take a step back of actually being right inside the movement and look at these independent objects that have a purpose and have a legacy also. >> these posters are placed in context with art from earlier political activists movements. >> these posters go back to the 1960s and the founding of the black panther movement and offering a historical perspective. what is impressive here is the work by the artists, their intensity and their motivation. ultimately they are impact full posters, not immune to controversy, but thought-provoking. >> to really think about artists

two. even the keepers at this wildlife park are surprised to see so many cute bundles of fur at one time. they are cute! some of the bay areas most talented musicians are in san francisco this weekend for the big fillmore jazz festival which wraps up today. ♪ >> this year's festival features more than two dozen bands on three stages including a tribute to the late etta james. it's expected to draw about 90,000 people to a dozen or more blocks along fillmore street, making it the largest free jazz festival on the west coast. the festival is being held today from ten until six. lisa, i was there yesterday and it is just always one of my favorites. >> a little cooler there today. and also the san francisco symphony at the stern grove festival today, right on through the next sunday -- every sunday
