good morning, i'm kristen sze. >> i'm cheryl jennings. we are under a spare-the-air alert as temperatures are rising. >> live look outside from vollmr camera and you can see a layer of brown smog hang ought horizon. >> meteorologist mike nicco is here with the latest. >> i thought we would start with our current temperatures. 82 in fairfield, well on our way to over hundred there and many parts of the east bay valleys. right knew in the 50s and very comfortable along the coast in san francisco where the clouds are just now being back.

temperatures in the mid to upper 50s so now is the great time to get out. you see the hundreds in east bay valleys. clearlake and cloverdale and ukiah, a lot of 90s in the north bay and we'll hit the low 80s around oakland and san mateo. head to the coast, 65. poorest air quality will be the east valleys in the south bay today, but all of us are under the spare the air. hot weather has firefighters in san jose on high alert. especially after a series of suspicious fires that began last night near a popular park. latest broke out this morning where fire crews are monitoring hot spots. katie is live at the scene. >> reporter: fire crew responded to the area right around 7:30. crews had just gotten home from the night before after putting out a series of fires and that

makes four within a 12-hour period. >> san jose firefighters douse add smoking tree. the last hot spot of the latest suspicious fire in kelly park but they were not the first on the scene. >> we saw a girl saying fire, fire. and then we saw the smoke. >> he was on job nearby and he grabbed his co-workers and shovel. >> we run real quick and we saw the fire. we start digging around. we start digging and digging. >> firefighters arrived quickly after 7:30 this morning and finished the job. this new fire was the burn area but the captain on the scene says it appears to be intentionally set. the same goes for the three fires that burned 12 acres last night. >> certainly with multiple locations, it is suspicious. i tell you it's a problem in the creek areas for homeless

encampments but we can't make a determination. >> whoever is starting these fires, this is a dangerous time. in even in the dark of night fire officials know that the weather is not on their side. >> this is the way in the summer the fuels have been dry lately. the heat as the hotter days and humidity starts going down the fire danger goes up. >> reporter: long before last night the same area had a problem with homeless camps and fire. the fire captain i spoke with this morning, says the fire department and police department and environmental services and other agencies are working together to try to come up with a long term solution to this ongoing problem. we should learn more about that solution this week. san jose firefighters are also mopping up after a house fire early this morning. the fire broke out just after 5:00 inside a home on andrea drive. they believe it started in the kitchen possibly after someone left something burning on the stove.

fire moved quickly to the second story and the attic. four adults got out safely. >> we were afraid, i didn't know how the fire department kept it contained from all the other houses around. no other houses got hit. >> one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. >> the next time firefighters in eastern contra costa asked for aid they may not get as much help as they need. amy hollyfield has the story from oakley. >> there has been significant cuts in the county. since that happened the calls for help to the contra costa fire district have tripled. well the county says it can't keep coming over here at that pace. it's got to slow down the residents say they are feeling abandoned. >> this grasses fire threatened 11 homes in unincorporated brentwood. they sent four fire engines to

help the shrinking fire district but the county has decided three engines is all they can send going forward. >> to make sure that we protect our citizens who are paying, they are basically footing the bill for this. we have to make sure we can provide coverage for our citizens even though we're happy to help when we can. we can't always do that. >> the chief of east county says he understands the decision but she worried about what it will mean. >> we are going to lose some houses and there is going to be some major injuries and we're going to have difficulty outcomes. >> voters rejected a parcel tax that would help fund the district. july 1st they closed half of the fire stations. there are three engines and nine firefighters covering 249 square miles. >> in the first nine days of july, east county has asked for 27 engines. county says it can't continue to

help that the pace. >> i guess they have to do what they have to do. >> as a says it's outrageous. we need the fire department fully staffed. we need the emergency response time as quick as possible. >> the amount of time to take for us to get there is going to be significant which means there will be more destruction. >> county says its budget is tight and resources are thin. that county is going to have a parcel tax on its ballot in november and the firefighters there are hoping they will see what happens here in east county and vote to approve it. also in contra costa county a big cut back in jobs for an agency that provides shelter for families because of a lack of donations. stand for families lost about

$300,000 in donations. executive director says more calls than ever are coming into shelter's hot line. the shelter is almost always full. 15,000 calls came in last year of the for more information about ways you can help them, log on to our website. >> the chp is investigating an accident in oakland that left a person trapped under a vehicle and snarled the commute. it happened just before 10:00 a.m. on interstate 580 near the 980 connector ramp. sky 7 was over the scene. you can see it was backed up to highway 13. it's unclear how the person got trapped under the minivan. if you are trying to kick the smoking habit it could lead to more weight gain. results of a new study. >> plus, the major train accident that sparked this fire, why firefighters decided not to put it out.

street exit would be 80. we have a reported now from highway patrol there are no serious injuries but you can see it's slowing traffic. we'll stay on top of this in case there is more to bring you. an accident on interstate 80 just before the powell street. >> a train derailment that caused a fire in columbus, ohio. three tankers were carrying ethanol. it prompted authorities to evacuate a mild wide area until the fire could burn itself out. two people ran to the scene were injured. they were able to take themselves to the hospital. eleven freight cars derailed and investigators are still looking into exactly right. >> republican presidential candidate mitt romney was boo'd during naacp meeting in houston. >> trying to eliminate, expensive program i can find including obamacare and i'm going to work to reform and

voted to offer chapter 9 bankruptcy protection from creditors. there is growing list of cities in other states. here is more. >> reporter: predicted for years the day of reckoning has arrived. san bernardino, home to 210,000 residents they can no longer pay its bills of them declared bankruptcy in the past two weeks the third city. >> to file a chapter 9 petitioned on behalf of the city in the united states bankruptcy court. >> scranton, pennsylvania mayor is cutting his salary along with municipal worker to 7.25 an hour. >> the reality is because council underfunded their budget. we don't have enough money to pay minimum wage. if more money comes in we'll be happy to make those payments. >> the department of public

an ohio man has a way to thank to keep his treasure of baseball cards. he was going through his atack when he spotted a cardboard box and possible windfall. >> they have to be baseball cards, there is cy young and there is tycobb and evers and these names, hall of famers right there. >> we're going okay. they are either worth nothing or they are worth something. >> experts are calling the discovery cardboard gold.

pressure has a lot of pollution down lower levels. in santa cruz. air is clean and temperatures will be moderate. head into the water. it's 50s there. here is a look at live doppler 7-hd. wouldn't be nice to have rain to temper the heat wave? it's not out there. the clouds are clinging to the coast and pockets of sunshine are starting to develop there, as well. temperatures at the coast the same as yesterday. one degree cooler in san francisco and everybody else 2-9 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. this puts us in the mid 80s already. in antioch and livermore, 81 in los gatos and mix of 60s and 70s away from the coast. 55 in watsonville. gilroy is 81 already. today will than the hottest in the forecast and widest spread of poor air quality. you can keep the windows open and drop down to the 50s and 60s and cooling trend during the

afternoon hours tomorrow. today everybody is warmer from four degrees concord and santa rosa. look at fremont at 90, san jose 93. five degrees warmer than yesterday. center of this high pressure sitting on top of us today. still holding on by fingertips inland but tomorrow we'll make one more run to hundred. dublin, 99,. upper 70s and then we go from 80 in oakland to 90 in fremont. we start from 91 to mil pi tas to 98 in los gatos. even 90s on the peninsula. millbrae at 79. mid 60s along coast today. downtown south san francisco and sausalito i would say low to mid 70s. cloverdale, clearlake, in the hundreds, just like morgan hill, 76 in watsonville. santa cruz, 80. 67 in monterey. this is why there is going to be such an energy drain.

by calling them or go to aids walk.net. >> this morning, governmental officials are warning parents about the dangers baby monitors. they say there has been at least seven deaths of infants that were strangled by the cords and three other that were nearly strangled. parents are urged to place cords three feet away from the crib and never put them in the crib or on the edge of it. >> people that quit smoking tend to gain more weight than first thought. they gained an average of 10-11 pounds after the first year with most of that weighted gained within the first three months. nicotine boosts metabolism but they say it should not discourage people from quitting smoking. >> a toast to your health, two new studies suggested that women may benefit from moderate
