from the air and on the ground firecrews work through the night to stop the advance of a mammoth forest fire in the sierra. >> the area is remote, but the evacuations have been ordered. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm carolyn johnson. they have spent the last several hours battling this wildfire. the fire broke out in placer county between colfax and foresthill about 3:30 this afternoon. so far it forced residents to evacuate the shirt tale canyon area. someone reported seeing men shooting off fireworks about the time it began. they are still trying to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire. it is hot there and triple digit temperatures in parts of the bay area made life uncomfortable for a lot of

people. in walnut creek temperatures peaked at 100 degrees. itment trying to cool off at the clark memorial swim center. they did the best they could trying to stay cool. it hit 104 degrees in livermore and 102 in cloverdale. a surging demand for power forced pg&e to declare an emergency -- an emergency -- an energy emergency asking people to conserve. if you were looking for someplace cool it was a delightful 59 degrees today in half moon bay. what a contrast. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with more on today's sweltering heat, sandhya. >> dan, it was simmering inland. look at the temperatures. 104 degrees in livermore. got up to 104 in ukiah and 103 antioch, fairfield. concord at 99 degrees. 87 in san jose. it was a warmer day, but not quite the heat the inland areas had. 92 in napa and 91 in santa rosa. 102 in cloverdale. san francisco comforted by the

fog. as you just mentioned, 59 in half moon bay. so relatively cool. we are going to see the heat backing off a little bit. but when will we actually lose the steamy weather? i will be back to let you know in a few minutes. carolyn? >> see you then. a strange case of assault in the east bay. a san pablo city councilman says he was attacked in richmond while doing his job as a property manager, an attack that left him unconscious he woke up at golden gate fields with a concussion. nick smith is live from the richmond police station where officers are investigating this. nick? >> absolutely. carolyn, richmond police confirm they are actively investigating the alleged attack against san pablo city councilman paul morris. tonight morris is at home recovering from his injuries. san pablo city councilman paul more rirks the alleged victim of a july 3rd attack did not want to speak with us today. >> councilman morris? >> morris is president of this

company and served as a san pab bloi councilman since 2. he says on july 3rd he went to a home to interviews himself to the tenant of a home his company recently acquired. morris told them he was on the doorstep when a man suddenly ran out yelling get out! get out! and punched him in the chest. he fell backwards and the last thing he remembers is hitting his head on the concrete. >> there is no reason to believe he was attacked because he was a council person. i don't even think he had time to tell the person he was the new property manager. >> it was then they say things took a bizarre turn. morris told police he was driven in his car unconscious and left inside near the entrance to the golden gate racetrack in albany. that's when he woke up alone in the car and seated on the passenger side. windows open and car key and smart phone within reach. he would then push the alert but done in his car sending an emergency call to first responders. >> from everything we have at this point, we are

investigating and seeing if we could come up with the suspect from that. >> after the unprovoked attack he was left alone suffering from injuries that caused him to be hospitalized for two days. neighbors are shocked. >> oh my god. i can't believe that. >> for the fact i know it was one of my neighbors, it is even worse. >> police would only say their investigation is on going. they do have a person of interest, but they have not named a suspect. they expect to make an arrest soon. they do say, however, there is no immediate threat to the community. in richmond, nick smith, abc7 news. >> thank you. napa police arrested a substitute teachers and who is a football coach at vintage high school on charges he had sex with two teenage girls. brock james daniels is in jail. his bail set at $1 million. detectives claim daniels met the girls through a social networking site between november of 2010 and this past

june. they also suspect he had sex with a girl inside his home. fro moppet police need help finding a man who followed a teenage girl and grabbed her along stevenson boulevard. it took place around 4:25 after the girl walked home at stevenson and fremont boulevard yesterday afternoon. the girl says the man grabbed her around the neck, choked her after he asked for directions to the nearest atm. the girl escaped. she suffered minor injuries. her attacker was last seen running eastbound on stevenson. governor jerry brown furloughed 11,000 workers today forcing them to take off one unpaid day per month. most of them are state engineers working for cal trans. the furloughs effectively cut their pay by 5%. this move is expected to save the state about $400 million for the year. up a creek and looking for a way home. tonight a way ward dolphin is still trapped. it has been stuck since this morning in south san

francisco. so far the bottle nosed dolphin has not been able to find its waits back to the bay. ama dates is there live. ama, when was the last time you spotted it? >> the last time i saw that dorsal fin it was about 9:00. my video exextraordinary their spotted it around 9:40, and it has gotten dark. it is hard to see if the dolphin is still in here, but earlier we got a good look at. it -- at it. >> this is the money shot as the dolphin nose dolphin -- as the bottle nosed dolphin showed up. he was spotted a quarter mile up koll ma creek near the cost-co. >> the animal is swimming in circles. >> reporter: he is a volunteer with the marine mammal center that is working with other agencies to figure out if the dolphin needs help. >> honestly the best thing is if it just resolves itself. >> according to golden gate

between sacramento and lake tahoe. he is live from the fire lines tonight in placer sun co. placer county. dave, what is the word? >> you can see lonely out posts like this one. cal fire folks staged along the american river and the southern edge of shirt tale creek just west of foresthill. this fire could boil up anytime tomorrow or even later tonight, and they are watching for it. so far remarkably good luck. the up canyon winds didn't come up the way they normally do tonight, but tomorrow could be another tough day. the fire explodes up a mountain side by day. you can see flame fronts at times over a hundred feet as high trees explode into flames. and the fronts reach up toward the top of the cliff. along this extremely steep stretch of the fire, the vertical is about 60%. that means that shale is clatterring down as firefighters listen from the far side. it also means snags can come crashing down on top of you.

and another issue is simply falling. >> what happens if a guy is down there and a piece of shale or one of those trees comes down? >> it is a pretty good chance that something will hit you and hurt you. that's why we don't have crews up on the side of the mountain. >> this is the west flank of the fire on the far side of shirt tale creek. you can see the flames, six, seven, eight feet tall in places even at night, and considering it is a 400-foot rise and below it is almost straight down, that means there is is about 700 feet they are dealing with. >> the temperatures in the hundredses, that humidity is way down, and the burning conditions are prime to be extreme. >> did you see that piece of shale just then? >> i did. >> that's what you don't want hitting you? >> not at all. very dangerous. >> now, of course, that's some of the issues the firefighters are facing, and they are putting crews in there remarkably enough, but not what they want to get back tomorrow. the big issue are the winds are coming up and the temperatures are expected to

be over a hundred degrees, and that's a little comawnt called iowa hill is right in the path of the fire. they have everybody ready to evacuate. some folks are out of the canyon. we just have to wait and see how the fire fight goes tomorrow. cal fire is stretched a bit thin with a lot of blazes burning across california. they have restaged a lot of resources up from southern california, but of course what will be crucial is the conditions tomorrow. if the conditions turn bad, this fire could turn into a very, very serious one. back to you. >> thank you, dave. at a fundraiser tonight in montana, mitt romney told supporters he thought he did a pretty good job at the naacp convention in houston. the republican presidential candidate said he proved for one he does president change his message -- he does president change his message -- doesn't change his message for the audience. he was booed for 15 second when's he told the audience he knew they didn't want to hear. >> i will eliminate every nonessential expensive program i can find. that includes obama care. i am going to work to reform

friday the inland will really drop off. i want to show thank you photo. this was sun -- submitted and it is the weather in vacaville. look at the exter national temperature. it is 106 degrees. the official high for vacaville today was 104 degrees. take a look at the changing weather from our high definition roof camera looking toward the financial district. fog is rolling in not just over the coast, but over the bayside communities. as you look at live doppler 7hd you will see it. it is at the coast and over the bay. the marine layer is beginning to deepen 1200 feet tonight and that is signaling some change. we also have clouds moving in, and you will see more high clouds for the next two days. the temperatures right now, you can see it still pretty warm. inland areas in the 70s and 80s, but notice how much cooler it is compared to the inland areas. the coastal areas are in the low 50s where the fog is sitting. here is the visibility. this is what i am talking

about as far as the fog being possibly a problem. i have been tweeting this. half moon bay is reporting visibility down to three quarters of a mile. you will possibly run into problems during the morning commute. give yourself a little extra time. another hot day inland thursday. spare the air day, and cooling begins for the coast and the bay for your thursday afternoon. here is the upper level high, and we will go with one more day of hot conditions in land. although not the 104 we saw today. we are going only up to 100 degrees. the circulation around the high will draw up some more high clouds. we are seeing those. do count on them as we head into your thursday. this is a trough that is starting to impact our weather as it is deepening our marine layer. cooler days expected starting tomorrow at the coast and the bay, and it is spreading into the inland communities for your friday afternoon. tomorrow morning 49 in half moon bay. possibly dense fog. 50s across the rest of the bay area. low 60s and clear in our inland east bay. and it is another spare the air day.

news where a fire is burning near a construction site in a mobile home park off monterey highway. this video was shot just moments ago. a power line was also brought down here. firefighters are getting a handle on it. no one has been hurt. a would be entrepreneur from southern california says the only way he can afford to live in palo alto is by showering at the gym, cooking at work and living in his car. kurt moved to the peninsula from los angeles in march to start an internet company, but instead of renting an apartment, the 25-year-old has been staying in a different kind of home, his car. kurt made this video and posted it on youtube. palo alto, by the way, is one of the few cities in silicon valley where it is legal to live in your vehicle. you can do it. well, a small town mayor in germany is courting controversey with a new parking plan. he is putting his town on the map, not far from france and
