of cost-cutting brown-outs. this morning the city as well as the fire department going to announce an 8.6 million dollar grant the department is going to hire 27 new recruits. 19 just graduated in april. we have video that. their salaries being paid for with a grant. the money being put to good use here in san jose hiring additional 27 firefighters as of this morning. we expect that official announcement at 11. katie marzullo, abc7 news. in l.a. authorities say at least 16 occupy protesters were arrested on various charges. last night in downtown l.a.. three police officers suffered minor injuries after being hurt during the confrontation. the protest began as part of a

sidewalk chalk drawing demonstration that was advertised on facebook during a monthly art walk. police began removing 200 before 10:00 occupy protesters are claiming police shot rubber bullets. it took hundreds of officers two hours to disperse the protesters. this morning passengers who were forced to evacuate a delta jet because of a bomb scare will be on another bond for their original destination madrid. as we told you last night, the jetliner made an emergency landing in new york after a sky marshal reported finding a suspicious wiring device in a lavatory. terrorist task force agents and new york city bomb squad evacuated the plane as soon as it landed. a male and female passenger were questioned and released a search found no more explosives. two more hearings are scheduled next week as ross mirkarimi fights to get his

job back. his attorneys are accuse the mayor of lying under oath and trying to subpoena witnesses. during his testimony the mayor said never consulted with supervisors before suspending the sheriff. the building commissioner says the supervisor told her she talked with lee. but she denies that. the mayor is outraged by the perjury talk and believe it is designed to distract if the fact -- to distract -- >> the fact is he did hurt his spouse, add night false imprisonment and the dissituation of others -- and the demeaning of witnesses are activities that amount to official misconduct. i don't think he deserves to be sheriff. >> . >> >> los angeles police department and chief facing

new defamation suit in the wake of the beating of giants fan brian stow the man who was originally arrested is seeking unspecified damages. he says police rushed to capture wrong man calling him the primary or. he was never charged he went to prison for 10 months on parole violation as a result of the stow investigation. police have since arrested two other men for attacking stow. this morning more police are on patrol in north richmond following a pair of gang-related shootings. the first 9:30 yesterday morning near the intersection of first street and west grove avenue. video shows police marking a dozen bullet casings, three teenagers taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. 30 minutes later a second shooting six blocks away injuring a 28-year-old man. police believe the two shootings are related. napa county sheriff's department is asking for help finding two men wanted for a

series of smash and grab car burglaries. a third suspect is already in custody. investigators claim he and two accomplices burglarized several cars after smashing windows last saturday. this is a picture of the two wanted men from a convenience store video wearing black t-shirts. if you can identify them, call the napa sheriff's department. prop 29 supporters are refusing to give up after last month's loss. backers to increase tobacco tax have requested a recount in los angeles county. prop 29 is trailing 49.7%-50.3% less than 30,000 votes. the campaign has selected 191 precincts for a recount but has not said why it is focusing on los angeles. the recount process begins monday.

new poll shows californians are overwhelmingly in favor of legalizing sports betting in the state. 58% of all registered voters surveyed say they favor legalizing sports betting. 35% oppose. people who favor point out there's already gambling among friends and office pools so why not let the state reap tax revenues. opponents say it will increase gambling addictions. johannes mehserie -- jpmorgan chase says its trading loss has green to 4.4 billion dollars. -- has grown to 4.4 billion dollars. the chief was forced to appear before congress twice to explain what happened. he has been under pressure to say what is being done to protect the bank from a similar loss happening again. 5:07. what a difference a day makes. you probably are going to feel

it is friday we made it to end i have an hot week and things are changing. thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. the contra costa county sheriff says his jails are so full he needs more space he is expected to announce plans to expand the jail critics don't want the county to spend the money on that. nick smith is live in richmond with more on the story itch >> reporter: that's right. he says he -- he needs more room because he's running out of space. critics say this is not the best use of resources there are other ways to find twice treat those incarcerated. -- to find ways to treat those incarcerated. he expected to unveil plans he says the number of inmates has caused the jail to fill faster and they need room.

not everyone supports the expansion plan. critics say this money should be spent on programs that help keep people out of jail rather than bring more in. >> looking ahead, we do feed to plan for the future. it is going to -- need to plan for the future. it is going to be a problem. >> invest in people not in locking people up. >> reporter: sammy has been in and out of the west contra costa detention facility six times. he says programs he attended after his incarceration have done more than the jail time. he's pushing for more community-based initiatives that help with transitional services. the two million dollar expansion will add 150 new beds to the 1900 bed facility. the money would come from the 19 million dollars contra costa county will receive this year from the state to help pay for the realignment of lower level offenders from state prison into county custody. the sheriff will unveil his expansion plan today at a
