now that is where the fire broke out in the yellow house. the fire started at about 8:45 this morning, neutral fire crews responded from all over the northern peninsula. >> it quickly went to a two-alarm but fire crews were able to control it. i spoke briefly to a relative of the family and she told me that seven of her relatives including her grandparents live in had in house. we confirmed that young child was rescued from the home. we spoke to a neighbor who describes what he saw. >> i noticed there were people scrambling in and out of the house from the construction site next-door. they were immediately alerted me there was a two-year-old inside that was trapped. >> reporter: again, that young child was rescued and was taken to the hospital. we've also been told by an officer here at the scene that at least one, perhaps more

adults were taken to the hospital. we don't know the status of either the child or the adults. we are waiting for a fire department spokesman to come over to the fire scene to give us more information. we will, of course, keep you updated. that is the latest from the fire scene in san bruno. >> eric: what sorted started as garage fire and rescue in concord has turned into a police investigation after firefighters on the scene found evidence of a pot growing operation. contra costa fire inspector said the early morning fire was caused by somebody trying to illegally supply power to the home. fire chief said they had to rescue the people sleeping inside before putting out the electrical fire. >> on arrival we found smoke in the garage area. we made entry into the house. there were people sleeping in the house. we facilitated a rescue of the people to get them out. at that time we looked in the garage and we had electrical

fire in the garage. >> eric: one person suffered smoke inhalation and one person was taken into police custody. >> jj city officials say they received a multimillion dollar grant to hire new firefighters. it will help put 27 new firefighters in uniform. it's similar that graduated 19 new fire recruits last april. the new recruits should begin working by next february. >> kristen: power has been restored in several neighborhoods that lost power twice. this morning it hit around 8:00 a.m. the outage impacted nearly 7,000 customers in four neighborhoods. you on can see lower heights, western addition, western addition and the haight. last night 10,000 customers were left in the dark. it started shortly before 9:00 p.m. and lasted two hours.

pg&e is not sure if they are related and continues to investigate. >> eric: contra costa sheriff is pleading millions of dollars to build more jail space. the sheriff wants to expand the detention facility in richmond. nick smith is live in richmond. >> good morning. now, the sheriff says, hey, we're running out of room and we need to expand the facility. so the sheriff and representatives met today to lay out a plan to expand the west contra costa facility by 150 bunk beds making room for an additional 300 inmates. the sheriff department david livingston and the sheriff and representatives 69 department of corrections unveiled the plan for expansion to the west contra costa ze tension facility. he says new inmates and parole

violators has a caused the jail to fill faster than expected. he laid out a plan to use part of the $9.7 million budget, those funds that are dedicated to pay for the realignment of lower level offenders from state prisons into county custody. critics say it should be spent on programs to help keep people out of jail. >> by the time we're interested in putting someone into jail, i'm telling you it's not because they missed something but it's because a series of efforts that we've made. >> black active gang members, they split it up. it's working today so why wouldn't it be working tomorrow. >> it doesn't make sense. we need to invest people and build opportunities. >> reporter: representatives of the sheriff's department laid out a line item budget that included estimated cost of staffing and inmate re-entry

program and renovation improvements needed. behind me is where they actually met this morning and they will have a few meetings to review the budget and take a final vote on august 2nd. >> kristen: while many kids are enjoying summer vacation, some students are spending this morning waiting hours to ensure they will have the school supplies they need for fall. katy is live at community service in san jose. >> reporter: registration for free backpacks started at 9:30 this morning and the line still quite long. take a look. it goes down and street and around the corner. hundreds of families waiting to register for a free backpack and school supplies and it's first come, first served. so the first in line were not taking any chances. >> the very first people in line arrived last night around 10:30.

they willingness to camp out speaks to the level of need here. 13-year-old arrived a little later at 3:00 a.m. >> i want to be able to get my own backpack for me and my family. >> they are registering for herself and her two younger brothers and two younger sisters. >> my dad is having a difficult time finding a job and to raise the kids. this is a good opportunity for us to come and take advantage of this. >> they have been handing out free backpacks for ten years. first year they gave away 150. this year the goal is 2300. >> that is our estimate for this year. we keep having to push our number up. >> jay showed us the items that have been donated so far this year. >> you have nice colorful ones. >> about 300 packs and handful of school supplies. they are donations from individuals and companies.

information that the little boy that was taken to the hospital has now died. the boy's 30-year-old mother is in critical condition. a 69-year-old man has burns to his body as a result of the fire that broke out this morning. a two-alarm in san bruno. we'll have more at 4:00 today. >> bart officials say they are making major progress building the new connector to the oakland international airport. girders are now being placed between columns that are installed. this is new video from bart of first one being installed yesterday morning. when they put in it will be easier to envision it how it will be along hegenberger road. it will carry passengers between the alcoholly seem and airport. it's scheduled to be completed in 2014. >> eric: san francisco giants begin at at&t park tonight. they are playing the astros. they reunited before the game.

everybody else about 1-9 degrees cooler. here is a look at the temperatures. 50s in san francisco and oakland. only 70 in los gatos. 80s in antioch. that is not going to last long. cleaner and cooler air today, no more spare-the-air days. this afternoon will be cooler than average. today we're also there from one degree cooler in livermore and 2347 napa and redwood city. this sea breeze is pretty stout. it's kicking the warm high pressure out of the way and moving the cooling trend in the east bay valleys where we'll see the biggest drop. possibly 90 in antioch and brentwood. berkeley and oakland, 66 in berkeley and 68 in oakland. 78 in sunnyvale. low to mid 80s and warmer for

the rest of the south bay. low to mid 70s on the peninsula. mid-50s along the coast today to low to mid-50s in downtown and south san francisco. sausalito, 57. sunshine and mid to upper 70s through most of the north bay valleys. low 50s around monterey. mid-50s in watsonville. we'll have 80s inland. here is the giants forecast, you know you'll need a coat. we'll start at 65 but drop down to 58 with increasing clouds and breezes by the end of the game. astros are in town. tonight cloudy with temperatures cool in the 50s and even drizzle possible along the coast. let's jump ahead to sunday morning, 9:00, golden gate park, the aids walk is taking place. clouds will be very stubborn. you may see some sunshine late in the afternoon. southwest winds will pick up around 10-20 miles an hour and temperature will be warming up to around 59. if you are standing in the sunshine you will feel a little
