until someone pulled the plug. good morning, everybody. i'm john muller. >> i'm sunny hostin. rob and paula are off today. dangerously high temperatures are back for millions of americans. >> but the climbing mercury is part of the summer extreme heat weather. severe thunderstorms tore through several states last night, killing two men in texas who ran for cover during a soccer match. >> the swift thunderstorm surprised the players. they took refuge under a tree which was a fatal mistake. >> i heard what sounded like a bomb go off. i looked to my left. i saw lightning hit the tree and go all the way down and just burst on the ground. >> reporter: the lightning bolt struck three people. one man died instantly, another died at the hospital and a third is in stable condition. thunderstorms hammered other states over the weekend. racing waters stunned drivers in washington state and made roads

impassable in arizona. drivers caught in the middle of fast-moving floods. parts of connecticut saw four inches of rain overnight. one driver fleeing for higher ground. today sizzling heat goes eastward. heat advisories for 13 states from dakotas to new york, with near triple digits returning to chicago and st. louis. heat wave making drought conditions worse. this year already rivalling the infamous dustball of the 1930s. >> that heat won't relent until later this week. we will check today's forecast in just a few minutes. that heat also not helping fire fighters in northern california. this morning we're getting a new view from the rugged frontlines of the robbers fire. burning out of control. the pictures coming from the fire fighters themselves. crews shot video of the flames that have burned 3 1/2 square miles near the town of colfax since wednesday. president obama holds his first town hal meeting of his

campaign later today in ohio. he's expected to launch another round of attacks against mitt romney's financial dealings. abc's tahman bradley has more. on what has been an intense couple of days to say the least. tahman. >> reporter: for a while, president obama was on the defensive about the economy. not anymore. the romney team lost control of the campaign message as the obama team piles on. president obama is not letting up. campaigning in cincinnati today, the president will label mitt romney as a job destroyer. according to the campaign, mr. obama will hit romney for his corporate tax proposals, claiming they will create hundreds of thousand of jobs overseas. it's the latest in a series of blistering attacks which has changed the subject of the president's handling of the lackluster economy to questions about romney's time at bain capital. >> i don't want a pioneer in outsourcing, i want some insourcing. >> reporter: that's one of the president's main arguments that romney's investment firm, bain,

outsourced jobs. romney said the outsourcing happened after he left in 1999. s.e.c. documents list him as chairman and ceo for three years after that. the obama campaign argues either romney was involved, or he committed a felony by inaccurately reflecting his role in the company. romney claiming the attacks are false is demanding an apology. >> he sure as heck has got to say he's sorry for the attacks coming from his team. >> reporter: the president told wavy-tv romney should not hold his breath. >> no, we won't be apologizing. >> reporter: republicans say the charge is simply a distraction. >> it's untrue, unfair, misleading. why is he doing this? on getting the economy going, bringing down unemployment. >> reporter: mitt romney's tax returns have become an issue for the obama team, now some republicans said romney should release more than he has. john and sunny. >> tahman bradley, thank you. athletes are moving into london's olympic village today,

well. and mrs. clinton's husband and daughter are in south africa as part of a six-day tour of african countries. former president clinton is trying to gather more support for a children's charity he founded. he's expected to meet with former south african president mandela tomorrow. let's look at the forecast here at home. houston, miami, could see pop-up showers by the afternoon. northern rockies will have a shower or two. flash floods could threaten arizona. minneapolis could break the record high at or above 100. fargo will be 90 instead of usual 84. seattle and portland are pleasant in the upper 70s. baltimore and atlanta in the mid 90s. coming up the latest auto gadget, an option that makes your car more like a kitchen. and grounded. more than 200 passengers on a flight to the u.s. stuck for three days. later how this beauty pageant contestant triumphed, even though she finished fourth.

growth. they see less evidence of hiring and say gains and sales profits are disappearing. the government is reporting weak job growth for three straight months. when new jobs are created, chances are men will get them. a major reason they've gone to men is the male-dominated industries are hiring again. men are also taking many jobs that once went to women. well t-was a cold weekend at the box office as "ice age continental drift" slid into first place. the animated film is also very popular in europe but opened with solid numbers right here in the u.s. it sold $46 million, in tickets this weekend.
