good morning. i'm sunny hostin, in for paula faris. >> and i'm rob nelson. good morning, everybody. the fbi has launched a criminal investigation after needles were found in six sandwiches onboard delta flights. >> two passengers who got the tainted sandwiches, were a father and son, flying on different flights back to the u.s. with more, here's abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: it's not what you expect served in flight. a half-dozen sewing needles found in sandwiches on four, separate delta flights this past sunday. a stunning discovery, raising serious questions about the security of food aboard commercial planes. among the people reporting injuries, a doctor and his son, traveling on separate flights. >> had i taken a big swallow and swallowed that down, i'd have a needle inside. that would be very concerning to me.

>> reporter: james tonges also says he ate one of the sandwiches. >> i felt the poke on the top of my mouth. when i pulled it out of my mouth, it was very clear. it was about a one-inch-long straight needle. >> reporter: the u.s.-bound flights originated in amsterdam. federal authorities including the fbi are investigating. trying to learn who had access to the food before it came aboard the plane. the catering company have been removed from flights. and a statement, gate gourmet said, we take this matter very seriously. gate gourmet immediately launched a full investigation, to determine the root cause of this disturbing incident. and we are treating this as a criminal act. delta airlines says it has taken immediate action to ensure the safety and quality of its food. but the scare exposes a vulnerable area of airline security. >> you can't check every sandwich that goes aboard a plane. and i think, unfortunately, this demonstrates to people who want to do bad things this this is a gaping hole.

>> reporter: the airline industry is already on high alert, coinciding with the olympic games. now, passengers have to worry about terror threats and their food. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> all right, tahman. thank you. also, another alarming midflight moment. federal agents are investigating a laser-pointing incident that injured a jetblue pilot that was flying here to new york city. the airline says a green laser light went through the windshield of a flight from syracuse to jfk airport sunday night, causing a minor eye injury to the pilot, who managed to land that plane safely ten minutes later. pointing a laser at a plane became a federal crime last year. and for the first half of this year, more than 1,500 incidents have now been reported. new details are coming in about a mass shooting in toronto, with police calling it the most serious crime of its kind that city has ever seen. 21 people, including children, were shot at a big outdoor

party. at least two people have died. and one of the injured is an infant. police say a fight broke out and bullets started flying from a number of weapons. they have one person in custody. another developing story, one of the busiest bridges between the u.s. and canada reopened overnight after being shut down for four hours because of a bomb threat. the ambassador bridge linking detroit and windsor, ontario, was closed after authorities on the u.s. side got a call warning of a bomb. no explosives were found. last week, a bomb scare closed the tunnel between the two cities. legitimate questions this morning about whether britain is actually ready for the upcoming olympics. after arriving at heathrow airport yesterday, a group of u.s. athletes suffered through a four-hour odyssey. their bus driver, believe it or not, got lost on his way to the olympic village. a security guard has been seen sleeping on the job inside london's olympic park.

and on top of that, the security duty is having trouble with its staff. 56 guards were supposed to secure a venue just yesterday. but only 17 showed up. ten days and counting inle the opening ceremony. the pentagon will reportedly announce its biggest ever mine-sweeping exercise in the persian gulf. all this comes a day after an american ship in that region found itself under threat. and then, opened fire with deadly effect. abc's jon karl reports. >> reporter: in this instant, an unidentified motorboat sped towards the u.s. navy ship, "rappahannock." and u.s. sailors aboard did not know who was coming towards them. u.s. military officials say the incident happened at 2:50 in the afternoon. ten miles off the coast of the united arab emirates. the navy ship first attempted to make radio contact with the boat, warning it to back off. but the boat kept coming at a high rate of speed. "the rappahannock" then flashed its lights and issued warnings

over loudspeaker. the boat did not slow down. "the rappahannock" then fired into the water, using a .50 caliber machine gun, similar to this one used in a navy training video. when that didn't work, sailors aimed the ship's weapons straight at the oncoming boat and fired, killing one person onboard and wounding at least three others. it turns out, the boat was not iranian at all. all the victims were from india. two others aboard but unhurt, from the uae. so, what was the unidentified boat? u.s. officials describe it as a pleasure craft. officials with the united arab emirates describe it as a fishing boat. there's no indication this was an attempted act of terrorism. but at the very least, it was a massive communications breakdown in one of the most dangerous places in the world. jonathan karl, abc news, washington. the most traumatic moment of the republican presidential campaign so far could play out in the next few days. a spokesman says mitt romney may announce his vice presidential pick by week's end.

"the new york times" reports that romney's friends already believe he's made up his mind. the historic drought that's been destroying crops and driving up food prices is getting even worse. as another heat wave peaks today, more than half of the country is in some stage of drought, the widest affected area since the 1950s. the midwest is bearing the brunt of the dry spell. on top of that, one-third of the nation's corn crop has already been hurt. and today, 16 states can expect that intense heat, from minnesota, up to massachusetts. severe weather from upstate new york to northern new england. also, stormy this evening around detroit, chicago, green bay and minneapolis. scattered thunderstorms from the carolinas to houston. also, some afternoon storms in the northern rockies. >> cool along the pacific coast, with 70s in seattle and sacramento. 90s from colorado springs to new york. a record 100 degrees in chicago. and coming up next after the break, a new weapon in the fight

one of his periodic reports to congress later today. and he's likely to face questions about whether the fed should do more to boost the slowing economy. also, a major international bank is accused of money laundering for drug and terror operations. a u.s. senate report says hsbc handled funds for mexican drug cartels, as well as for iranians and saudis linked to terror. a top senator says the culture at europe's largest bank was, quote, pervasively polluted. the justice department is conducting a criminal investigation into the operations. yahoo! search finds a new ceo. they're tapping marissa mayer, an executive at archrival google. she'll be the company's fifth chief executive in five years. and says her goal is to make using yahoo! more rewarding, something you'll want to do every day. mayer will be one of the few female executives in silicon valley. >> very impressive lady.

there's another major step this morning in the fight against hiv. the food and drug administration has approved truvada, the first drug that's proven to be effective in preventing the virus that causes aids. it's already used for those infected with hiv. but it is expensive. almost 14,000 bucks a year. and an old friend is now on new media. larry king's new interview program is now on hulu. although, it will include more than just interviews. seth mcfarland is his first guest. fire crews in southern california are battling a brush fire on the grounds of camp pendleton. the fire, which is now 20% contained, has already spread to 300 acres at the massive marine corps base. it was apparently sparked by training exercises. now, for a look at morning road conditions. wet highways from raleigh to nashville and houston. afternoon showers could drench roads in the northern rockies, the midwest and northern new england. >> and it looks like a great day to fly out there. weather-related airport delays are only expected in the city of minneapolis. and now, some extraordinary video of an incident that could have been just catastrophic. >> cell phone video shows a 7-year-old girl standing on the air conditioner of her third floor apartment. all this took place in coney

island, new york. she falls off. fortunately, someone was there to break her fall. he is bus driver steven st. bernard who says, believe it or not, he's not a hero. >> i saw her in the hospital. she doesn't have a scratch on her. >> people here say you're a hero. do you agree with that? >> no. no, i don't. a hero's a sandwich. i just saw a kid. and that's it. >> you did more than that. >> well, i would do the same for any kid. i'd do it for my own. >> he's a father of four. st. bernard, living up to his name. he did tear a tendon in the rescue. but he'll be fine. and so will the little girl. police in northeast iowa will be back at work draining a lake today, as they search for two cousins who have been missing since last friday. bikes belonging to 8-year-old elizabeth collins and 10-year-old lyric cook morrissey were found near meyers lake.

but there's been no sign of the little girls. the five-acre lake has already been dredged. it could take three days to drain it. and family members of a boston area pastor are rejoicing this morning after he was released from egypt. he was on a tour bus with another american and their guide on friday when they were kidnapped. his family was especially worried since he is a diabetic. but their son says, their faith never wavered. major, new developments in the trayvon martin case. a relative says the accused, george zimmerman, molested her for years. some of them during family visits. zimmerman's defense attorneys had sought to keep the disclosure from his first cousin from being made public, for obvious reasons. they say all this is not relevant for the charges zimmerman is now facing in the shooting case. charlie sheen is now winning for the nation's warriors. the "anger management" star is donating at least $1 million to the uso. the largest-single donation ever
