it is great to have another medication to help people lose weight. >> new hope for millions of trying to lose weight. the new drug from a mountain view company just approved by the fda. good evening, everyone. i'm carolyn johnson. >> i'm dan ashley. it is not for everyone, but for those who need to lose significant amounts of weight for health reasons, it could be the answer they are desperate for. what about the risks? john is here with the story. john? >> a local drug company will be making the new weight loss pill. more than a third of americans

are considered obese. it has been more than a decade since new diet drugs have hit the market. this is one way to stay in shape, but for those with serious health issues and can't work out like those in the marina district, a new drug could give them a hand. an earlier version helped him lose 165 pounds in one year. >> i wept from 390 pounds to 225 pounds. it definitely changed my life. >> the drug is made by vivas of mountain view which provided us video of operations. it is a combination of two drugs that suppressed the appetite and make a person feel full. during tests, patients lost nearly 10% of their weight. the drug is designed only for adults who are seriously overweight or obese, and they have conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. it is not supposed to be a quick fix miracle pill. according to a bear yacht trick surgeon -- bear --

bariatric surgeon. >> there is not weight coming off if they are not doing the exercise program and tree deuced calories. it has to be a complex approach that involves specialists in medical weight loss to achieve a good result. >> it comes with some health risks. they include memory loss, confusion and increased heart rate and birth defects, specifically cleft ballot. women should not take the drug when they are pregnant or become pregnant. it follows a long line of diet pills that caused health problems, most notably fen-phen which was known for damaging heart valves. >> we have had a gap here of more than a decade without any useful medications for obesity. and this combination drug i think gives us some additional hope that at least part of obesity can be treated with medication. >> it will be available toward the end of the year. the price has not been set

yet, but the drug maker is saying it won't be outrageous. insurance companies are not expected to cover the cost, at least early on. carolyn? >> john alston president aring. elianna lopez, the wife of ross mercurimi is back here. she came without their son from venezuela. she is set to testify before the ethics commission tomorrow about her marriage. they will decide whether to remove him from the sheriff's department. in another development our exclusive eye team report with dan noyes who interviewed lopez was entered into evidence in the case. he pled guilty to one count of false imprisonment related to the domestic violence incident on new year's eve. the incident began with an argument over lopez taking their son to venezuela. vector control is warning to wear mosquito repellant to ward off west nile virus. this following the discovery of two dead birds in fecked it

with the mosquito-borne disease. one in a pleasant hill neighborhood and the other across the county. residents are asked to make sure there is no standing water where mosquitoes might breed. especially neglected swimming pools. they are such notorious breeding grounds that they are asking to report them to authorities. the divorce between bill loc ce ar and his wife, nadia is growing contentious. they say he is reserving the right to ask for allah money, and -- alimoney. locear's salary is under $140,000 a year. she is an unemployed attorney who resigned her seat, and she has not commented on this. they agreed to share custody of their nine-year-old son. a hayward jury awarded the children of heinzer $60 million in damages for the

loss of their mother. that's twice the amount their mother sued their father more. he was convicted of murder in 2008 for the death of his wife. today the jury awarded each child $25 million for pain and suffering, plus $10 million in punitive damages. >> we wanted to make darn sure that the children were well taken care of, that they would have the psychological help they needed for the rest of their life. these children would probably never be able to go into the workforce. we wanted to make sure it was an amount that would be able to take care of these children for really the rest of their lives. >> the children's attorney has said it is unclear whether riser has assets now, but it will cover any ideas of value that riser comes up with while in prison. three murder suspects are under arrest in san jose. andy gomez, hernandez and jose gonzalez were wanted for killing an 18-year-old san jose man. police say it was gang-related. sr -- salcedo was arrested.

hernandez and gomez were taken into custody by a s.w.a.t team. gonzalez was in jail on unrelated charges. there is progress on the fire line. they will be allowed to go home tomorrow. wednesday marks a week since the fire began. it burned 2600 acres and it is now 60% contained. residents of the bushy creek and yankie gym area can return home tomorrow. firefighters are continuing to battle the flames. cooler weather is allowing them to make greater progress toward containment. witnesses say people playing with fire set off a grass fire in east palo alto today. sky 7hd is over the scene as they tackled the last of the flames. now, the blaze was reported at about dinner time. it was contained an hour later. you can see the flames crept right up to the back fence of some homes, but none were damaged.

several homeless tepts were in the area -- several homeless tents were in the area of the fire. they have not issued the cause of the fire. east bay boxing champion andre ward survived some tough battles, but it is nothing compared to the ones fought in iraq and afghanistan. he visited the v.a. hospital in palo alto. alan wang was there. >> the undefeated super weight champion of the world. he came to the veterans administration hospital to say thank you to people like army sergeant christopher montara who was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and badly burned. >> thank you for everything that you have done. thank you. >> there were soldiers who could not talk and could not walk. they could walk, but barely

talk. >> he wants to know how long have you been here? >> he gets upset about not being in the army anymore because he is discharging right now. it gives him a boost of confidence. >> many were staring at the same walls for months. but the battle to keep up the morale is key. >> it is a transition and slowing down. jordan stevenson showed his damaged helmet before surgery. >> i am supposed to be thanking them. >> many of these soldiers say getting back to their units is the best mental therapy which is why special ops army sergeant signed up for another tour despite his head injury. stevenson says he signed up for another tour too. and andre ward says he thought he was a fighter.

lowest point of the year of $4.58. it follows an analyst report that shows the growth rate fell 1% over the last six months. san rafael-based auto desk just bought san francisco social media start up social cam. it sold for $60 million. it is best known for computer aided software, but it is getting into the consumer market now. it lets users record and edit videos on the smart phone and then share them with friends and followers. the company currently has 54 million users. terry kennedy says it was a seizure from an old brain injury that caused her car accident last week. she was arrested for driving under the influence after hitting a tractor-trailer and slumped over her steering wheel. kennedy, the daughter of robert f kennedy, says she was not drunk or on drugs. >> i remember getting on the highway, and then i have no memory until i was stopped at

clouds hung on most of the day. we did see clearing at the coastline. mid60s there. a nice looking day. i want to show you the clearing trend from our south beach camera. yes we had low clouds. it was a deep marine layer this morning, but really the area of low pressure to our north blew the marine layer out, and we enjoyed a nice day. here is a look at live doppler 7hd. i will show you what the clouds are doing right now. very limited in coverage. we do have some clouds around the north bay and a few patches right along the coast. but really the low clouds haven't quite reformed. cooler, dryer air so changes are coming for tomorrow. temperatures right now in the 50s and the 60s. patchy drizzle for the morning commute. sunshine and high clouds for your wednesday afternoon and much warmer weather will arrive by the time we hit the weekend. here is the area of low pressure responsible for the drizzle and the gloomy weather, cooler than normal conditions. it is not going anywhere for a couple days.
