it is wednesday, 5:01, good morning thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. when uc agents meet today they will discuss whether tuition will be frozen or increased by double digits. amy hollyfield is live at mission bay campus. regents will also be greeted by protesters. >> reporter: absolutely. it is becoming the norm except this time a little different they are planning on dressing up like zombies to signify the death of public education. that should be interesting. here's some file video of past meetings. they have a history after tracking protests this is the uc meeting in march.

students have been protesting tuition hikes saying they can't handle any more increases. today the actions are not expected to be all bad. they are planning to freeze tuition for undergraduates and endorse the governor's tax initiative which will be on the note of ballot if voters approve that plan uc's budget would increase by 125 million dollars. if it fails they would face cuts of 250 million tuition could go up 20%. regents will be pushing that tax initiative. bad news for students in graduate school on the table is an idea to increase fees for professional schools, law school 10%, business school fees 23%. the argument is graduate students don't protest as much as ungrads do and they are pitching this idea saying graduate students are often willing to pay they believe the education worth it and their jobs will be valuable

enough. not great news today for graduate students undergrads look like they will be safe but there will be protesters to make sure their voices are heard. should be an interesting morning. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. the economy and unemployment are the focus this morning on capitol hill as the federal reserve chairman prepares to issue warning to a house committee. katie marzullo is live with that and breaking news out of sear yap. you have been following this and you have an update? >> reporter: i do. we first reported that the syrian defense minister was killed in a suicide bombing. the associated press is reporting that the deputy defense minister was also killed he happens to be president assad's brother in law. i'm keeping an eye on this. we'll continue to follow it. we want to look ahead at developing news on the domestic economy something that affects all of us.

in a few hours bernanke will go before the house financial services committee. in front of the senate banking committee yesterday bernanke pained a bleak picture. he said congress needs to agree on a budget or tax increases and deep spending cuts will kick in at year's in. he reminded what the budget office has warned there will be a recession and more than one million fewer jobs will be created. >> economic activity appears to have decelerated, somewhat slower rate of growth manufacturing production has also slowed. >> reporter: bernanke says the prepared to take action to try and help the economy if unemployment stays high but not saying how the fed would go about doing that or when. senate hearing begins at 7:00 this morning. 5:04 now. the cost of living in the bay area is going up according to

the latest report from the u.s. bureau of labor statistics. the agency says consumer prices in the san francisco, oakland, san jose metro region increased nearly 3% in the year ed in june. food prices rose 2.8% driven by the coast of eating away from home housing went up 3% with the cost of renting rising faster than the coast of buying. oakland police hosting a ride along today with colleagues south of the border they will take two federal police officers from mexico city for a ride and show them how the depth fights crime and the technology it uses, including the shot spotter system. the mexican officers toured oakland police headquarters yesterday their visit being hosted by kaiser permanent day latino association. the san francisco couple accused of murdering their daughter's pimp will be back in court to ask for a reduction in their two million dollar bail.

they face murder and other charges in the june 4th, shooting. the dead man calvin sneed was fatality wounded. he had allegedly pimped out the couple's 17-year-old daughter. three murder suspects in custody this morning in san jose. gomez, fernandez and gonzalez are wanted or arrested over the killing of an 18-year-old san jose man. police say it was gang-related. he was shot last october. gonzalez was already in jail on unrelated charges. fog warning -- fraud warning for bay area homeowners out of state companies are sending out mailers offering to obtain a copy of grant deeds or property title records to for a fee. the real estate fraud unit say
