abc news confirms he purchased all guns legally in past few months and there is a degree in neuroscience. >> the suspect in the movie theater massacre has strong ties to california having grown up in san diego. james holmes attended west view high school. he played soccer and ran cross country. neighbors scribe him as quiet and smart saying his mother was proud and law enforcement in california say he does not have a criminal record, not even a traffic ticket. mees went to the home today to escort his father to denver. his family released a statement saying they were taken by surprise. holmes left california to attend graduate school in colorado after earning a degree from uc riverside in 2010. >> he was an honor student sow was at the top of the top.

academically. he distinguished himself from an academic point of view during his four years with us. >> holmes was in the process of withdrawing from the program, it's not clear why. his father arrived in denver to speak with the investigators. >> and a young woman who was shot and killed in this movie theater narrowly escaped another shooting in a mall last month. jessica was an aspiring sportscaster that moved to denver. and she was at a toronto food court june 2 during a shootout. she was with a friend. >> this is just assuming everything is okay. i said wow. and i went back to bed thinking about that and called back, later. we found out he was shot and his girlfriend killed. >> jessica graduated from

tighter restriction. >> we do have an assault weapons ban. how you define what it is, it's a little tricky and manufacturers figured out how to get around that. >> before the theater massacre, lawmakers have been working on several gun control proposals including those that require reporting of lost or stolen firearms. fans -- ban open carry of unloaded guns. and there is harder to reload automatic weapon autos there is a weapon like that used in colorado. it would have come with a bullet slowing down the time to reload. the state limit on a magazine is 10 bullets. you can buy some with 100 bullets in other states. they're illegal to bring here, these are demonstrating

after an am back to youance collided with a small car. there is video of the crash at 16th and vanness avenue. there is impact flipped on its side. the driver of a small car and an intern suffered pineor injuries. the ambulance not transporting patients at the time. and there are authorities investigating white powder found on mail today to four local police departments. it was partially evacuated after the first envelope was found at 10:00 this morning. the hazmat team determined it was not toxic. and similar envelopes were sent to head quarters in berkeley and union city. all were also partially evacuated. there are no reports of anything toxic being found. >> a sacramento man arrested for setting a fire in placer county ai. 28-year-old man was
