from littleton. and everybody hears about a mass shooting in colorado they're thinking about the columbine tragedy. again this is the worst massacre in u.s. history. so there is a lot going on now. i'm told there will be a news conference at 7:00. i'm going to see what information i can get to i can bring you the latest. >> and thank you very much. and we'll come back this evening. bay area cities are increasing patrols in movie theaters in the wake of what happened in colorado today. abc 7 is live in jack london square where a shooting took place outside of a movie -- movie theater nearly two weeks ago. >> this shooting here outside jack london square was different and unrelated to what has happened in colorado. police believe there was a chance encounter between gang members whether or not they took additional security measures in reaction to that and today in reaction to what

happened they're not disclosing but getting support from police tonight. there is regal entertainment say they will notice stricter rules and oakland police chief says that is exactly what his department recommends based on the suspect red hair and gear. >> part of the reason the suspect, eve been told was able to go undetected is there were people allowed to wear costumes because of, i guess batman costumes and his enemies so there is not something unusual. >> police will increase patrols at theaters as will san jose and san francisco. >> this is a incident that has nationwide impact. and we want to make sure

joining me is special agent from the fbi of atf. and there are partners have been tremendous in supporting us. i want to start by saying how proud i am of the men and women of the fire department and police department. mike garcia, chief of the fire department is with us. there is a 70 injured in this event. as of this time, 12 dead. number is 10 in the theater, last of the bodies removed after 5:00 this afternoon. and i think today i said others were hit by gunfire. i know a handful of the people brought to the hospitals were not hit by gunfire but suffered other injuries as a result of the chaos and trauma. and i can't tell you how many that s but it's a small number. and nearly everyone was shot.

a little information about our subject. and weapons obtained. he purchased four guns and through the internet, he purchased over 6,000 rounds of an anything more than 3,000 rounds of 223 ammunition for assault rifle. 3,000 rounds of 40 caliber ammunition for glocs in his position and 300 rounds with a shotgun. also through the internet purchasing multiple magazines including one drum which was recovered from the scene. i've been asked was the weapon automatic or semi automatic. i can't answer that question right now. and i'm told by experts with that drum magazine, he could have gotten all 50-60 rounds

within a minute. and as far as we know, it was a rapid pace of fire in that theater. this evening at 4:00 members of the police department and many supporting agencies met with seven family and friends, 70 members of the family and friends have not had accounting of missing loved ones. we met with them for 90 minutes and discussed efforts to identify the 10 bodies in the theater. and did the best we do to deal with their grief and anguish. we're hopeful that sometime within the hour we'll get a confirmed ligs of the 10 deceased and we'll begin the

agonizing process of meeting with those families and confirming what happened to their loved ones. i can't emphasize enough support of all of our colleagues in local law enforcement in handling that difficult task. and we're also aided by our own police department psychologists. and aurora public schools made available two high schools for tomorrow beginning at 9:00 a.m. for professional grief counseling and other resources. and the red cross. and those two schools were open at 9:00 a.m. and superintendent john barry with us to meet with families and the support of the superintendent and mayor of public schools has been tremendous. >> that is the chief in aurora speaking about the shooting tragedy. we know how the suspect got ammunition, from the internet.

>> as you can see from the chief and governor, a lot of emotion in colorado tonight. they try to process what happened. and here is one of the questions we're asking. what made a dock toreal student snap like this? he had roots in southern california tonight we're learning about his good upbringing. he was a good student. mark? >> the shooting happened in aurora, colorado. he was going to the university of denver, aurora is where the university has its medical school. he was enrolled there in neuroscience, hpd program until last month. i want to take you where he grew up in southern california in the san diego suburb. this is where the family still lives, and it's where james hoevms father was. he left the house escorted by police.

holmes accepted in uc riverside. the chancellor says the school is in shock. >> here is an honor student. so academically he was at the top of the top. and he -- he really just distinguished himself from an academic point of view during four years with us. >> i just can't understand what turns a young man in this case from being a good student, from growing up in a good neighborhood, and then, going off to school and... what happened? i don't know. >> and the question you've posed why, that is the question that haunts the family. and the family and friends of the victims. >> yeah. >> and thank you, mark. the james holmes was apparently named after his uncle who lives in carmel. holmes described his nephew has a nerd and says he's shocked and horrified by news

of the killings. >> right. the uncle of the 24-year-old suspect does live here in carmel just a very short distance away. and just a short time ago, we did saysit the house of the relative whose name is also james holmes. he did not answer the door and appears not to be at home now. and he did talk earlier off camera with a reporter from the local abc affiliate. according to our station here, mr. holmes described his nephew as a nerd, and unassuming kid. he said that he is shocked and horrified by the news adding his nephew never acted out during his childhood or teenager years. local affiliate says he also rear refered to his nephew as jimmy and others have done, refered to his phd studies in biology and neuroscience, we have left our contact information at the carmel home.

i learned later on that i had stepped over two bodies of co-workers on the way out. >> once in the care of paramedics and later at the hospital scott says his brain played tricks with his sense of time. >> i remember looking athe clock and thinking it's taking the secondhand a long time. >> and and there is a rare reminder of the massacre but his mind still remembers his brush with death. and modified his behavior. >> you can't go into a room anymore without checking out two exists. and you go into a conference room. you want to be seated know. a door. it changes everything about your life. >> he says he keeps a name and number of a psychiatrist in his wallet and received counseling and says he's doing fine. not all are survivors fare as

marks in classes and did he not object to lifting the court order. prosecutor asked lopez whether she would feel safe if the stay away order was lifted. lopez answered yes. judge wong revoked his order. prosecutor tarhy did not object. >> i think judge wong about d.what was fair and appropriate and what would happen in any other domestic violence case. >> mirkarimi still stands a possibility of losing his job as sheriff. lopez testified last night at the hearing and was resolute in her loyalty to her husband. mirkarimi said today was a happy break in the long nightmare. >> what is the first thing you're going to do? any plans? >> no answer to that. >> lopez returns to venezuela to care for her aling father and work on a movie. the ethics commission wraps up the investigation next month.
