the afternoon highs, mid 60s at the coast. five degrees warming today. evening looks comfortable and we're talking cooler tomorrow. >> terry: police in aurora, colorado have updated the ongoing situation there following the deadly rampage in the past 45 minutes or so looking at a live picture of the suspect's apartment. 12 people were killed. 58 injured when a gunman opened fire in a crowded movie theater during a premiere of a new batman movie. 11 remain in critical condition. they have not entered the top story apartment. it is booby-trapped. they are removing the devices and chemicals inside may result in the explosion and fire when the trip wire is hit. david is in aurora with what the

suspect has told police so far. >> overnight they made the decision to postpone attempts to get inside the apartment what is believed to be an elaborate setup inside labored with traps. they for additional help from the federal government with evacuation of the four apartment buildings nearby. >> i see jars full of liquid, things that look like mortar rounds. we have a lot of challenges to get in there safety. >> as night fell on the small community, families came together in prayer and remembrance. >> it's devastating. it's really hard to deal with. >> right now, four people. >> we need to do the things that great communities to do. >> there were many more questions than answers what the

possible motive could be. he dyed his hair red and said i am the joker. >> i've got a child victim. i need rescue at the backdoor of theater 9 now. >> he didn't move at all. >> steven barton a recent graduate was in the midst of a cross-country bike trip when he made the decision to catch the premiere. suspect shot in the crowd when he was shot in the neck and chest. >> it seemed very methodical in the way he was firing and he wasn't moving position. he was just loading. >> terry: abc7 news reporter a ama daetz will bring us live reports and tweet updates.

>> suspect james holmes has roots in the monterey area. she grandson of a decorated military veteran who taught at the prestigious york school in monterey. his uncle lives in carmel. holmes have never been a member of the armed forces. here is carolyn johnson with more. >> reporter: he grew up in san diego in the upper class community. he placed soccer and then from u.c. riverside with a degree in neuroscience. >> he was an honor student. academically he was at the top of the top. he really distinguished himself from an academic point of view graduating with highest honors. >> it was a different james hol thams showed up at the san diego pawnshop asking for tips about firing a gun. >> i immediately recognized him. when i saw his picture. my first out of my mouth, he

looks very familiar. >> i can't understand what turns a young man in this case from being a good student, growing up in a good neighborhood and then going off to school and what happens? i don't know. >> reporter: when he couldn't find a job aft graduating his mother encouraged him encouraged him to get a graduate degree but he was in the process of withdrawing from the ph.d. program. when the mother was contacted, she told abc news, you've got the right person. i've got to call police. his father left the home under police protection to fly to colorado. >> terry: holmes' family issued a statement through a spokesperson, saying, quote, our hearts go out to all the victims and families. one of the people that was wounded was stopping by on the area bay area to the bay area riding hissing bicycle.

he was hit in the neck, arms and chest by shrapnel. >> it felt very surreal. even the news reports, it's trying to transcend myself back into that moment. it's very strange feeling. >> terry: barton says he is expects to be out of the hospital in a few days, but he is not sure when he can continued his ride to san francisco. >> we are learning the identities of more of victims. alex was one of the 12 killed inside the theater. sullivan died on his 27th birthday as he was set to celebrate his first wedding anniversary tomorrow. a recent university pacific graduate in stockton was wounded

she graduated from university college of music. she is recovering. university proceed velocity has been in contact with the family. >> we knew her will. she was a scholarship recipient. we are saddened by what has happened to her. >> terry: and the story that is almost impossible to believe, 24-year-old jessica barely escaped a mass shooting last month at at mall last month only to be shot and killed in the theater aurora. if you would like to honor the victims of the theater massacre we are posting badges honoring them as they are identified. you can share the page on facebook page of alex sul li van. >> mass sloogh in colorado have prompted a response by bay area police departments. many have increased patrols at

ones undeterred. there are a couple sold out showings and other theaters showing the dark knight rises. i talked to one couple that is here to watch the movie again they were at a midnight show in san francisco. >> right away we heard the news. we just freaked out. we had just come out of the movie. >> we were really excited. >> we had been to the theater and used to live out there. >> they decided they liked the movie so much and wanted to come again. >> this doesn't happen every day. i highway patrol as a country we don't overreact and police presence every time there is a move or prevent midnight showings. >> reporter: two local theaters have no reason to believe there will be any repeat attack. they just wanted to have an extra police presence to ease the minds of the theater going

powder it turned out to be flour. kelly musgrove found a similar envelope after a gag heads up. >> i called the fire department. at that point we just got the fire department and take a look at it. the letter was still sealed. >> union city hall is dark due to budget cuts so the mail was sitting there. half an hour earlier, san leandro department police employee opened an envelope that contained white powder. after a partial evacuation, the powder was determined to be flour. at 2:17 the berkeley police department were partially evacuated after a clerk opened an envelope. >> we evacuated the area. we had other parts of the building shelter in place. we turned off our heater and

ventilation units to the building. >> deputy chief says the powder was vegetable based. none of the envelopes contained any information. >> was it just addressed to the police department? >> just addressed to the police department. >> now an photograph of the envelope has been sent to all other departments. there is a postmark on the envelope but they are not a sharing that information. it's been turned over to the f.b.i. and postal investigators. >> terry: suspended share ross mirkarimi and his wife have reunited. she crossed her fingers as she walked in the halls of justice. not far behind her was mr. mirkarimi. there is no need for the seven month stay away order. judge agreed and lifted it.

today. 62 in fremont, 58 in redwood city and partly cloudy skies from monterey to santa cruz with 60 in salinas. if you liked yesterday. you notice how warm it got, we are adding 4-5 degrees to that. tomorrow we'll see more of a sea breeze but holding off to a much cooler weather mid-week. there is our fog. with it just at the coast it will disappear. we'll have a weak sea breeze and allow our temperatures to warm. that means the relative humidity goes down. we are talking higher fire danger and sea breeze confined to the pacifica, point reyes with plenty of 60s there. very comfortable temperatures in the mid 70s right in the city. we are talking about 80 in oakland. coming up everywhere else in the upper 80 80s in the santa clara valley. look at that. hundreds in the darker reds are

mitt romney cut short his campaign schedule because of the tragedy in colorado. the white house released pictures. these photographs showing the president getting briefed on the tragedy in colorado and then calling aurora's mayor steve hogan. he is asking people to pray for the families. >> i hope everyone fakes time for prayer and reflection for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people that knew them and loved them. for those that are still struggling to recover and for all those victims of violence that plague our communities. on the issue of gun control, mitt romney signed an assault weapons ban at as massachusetts governor. but his presidential campaign stance is protect gun owner's rights. president obama called for a ban

on weapons but has not taken steps to advance that. the victims are still in a state of shock but many describe the ordeal they survived. this man, marcus weaver has shrapnel inside his arms. he returned to th scene to give a ama daetz a firsthand account of what it was like to be in here. >> they were okay. there were bullets hitting the seat in front of us. you could see the white light kept going. every eight to ten shots and that is when you heard, i could still hear it right now. just a little kid screaming, parents asking where their children were. people crawling over you. >> terry: that survivor just updated abc7 news reporter in aurora this morning.

his friend died inside the theater. families held out hope but unaccounted loved ones might have escaped but they went door to door notifying loved ones that their relatives did not make it. news reporter a ama daetz is in colorado. she is going to continue to bring us live reports this evening. theater massacre in colorado is prompting more calls for tighter gun control here in kraz california. capital correspondent nannette miranda reports from sacramento. >> reporter: the brady campaign to prevent gun violence ranks california as having the strongest gun control laws in the country. while the assault weapons ban has been in place for two decades, brady campaign says the shooting highlights the need for tighter restrictions. >> we do have an assault weapons ban, but how you define what an

assault weapon is a little tricky and manufacturers have figured out how to get around that. >> reporter: even before the theater massacres, state lawmakers have been working on several gun proposals including the one of reporting of lost or stolen firearms. the open carry of unloaded handguns are already prohibited. and make it harder to reload bullets on semi-automatic weapons. >> in the state of california we have a bullet ban. >> he showed us a weapon like the one used in colorado. if the suspect had bought it here in california it would have come with a bullet button which slows down the time it takes to reload. state's limit on magazine is ten bullets. you can buy some with a hundred bullets in other states. >> compared to the rest of nation, they are a little bit overkill. right now we have enough laws in

place to adequately keep anybody from owning a gun that shouldn't. >> reporter: tragedy tend to spark legislation. >> we all should be asking our legislators, members of congress to strengthen gun laws so it doesn't happen again. >> this is a personal issue and not a gun issue. >> reporter: congress did not ask when gabrielle giffords was shot so it will have to do it itself. >> movie chain amc has banned fans from wearing costumes or carrying fake weapons in the showings of the new batman movie. james holmes had dyed his hair red and wore a gas mask. that let him blend in. >> because he was that movie theater where there people were allowed to wear costumes because of batman costumes and his

enemies. so it was not unusual for him to be dressed the way he was dressed. >> terry: dark knight rises is playing across screens in the country, but amc is the only movie house to ban costumes. drama is still developing this morning. more than 24 hours after one of the worst massacres in u.s. history. 24-year-old james holmes opened fire killing 12 and injuring 58 before surrendering to police, but it continued this morning, right now police are working to enter the booby-trapped apartment. they hope to get in there some time shortly. rebecca is live in aurora with the very latest. >> a crowd gathered for an impromptu prayer holding candles and mourning the victims of one of the worst mass shootings in

u.s. history. a day that started innocently of the new batman film. halfway into the movie, hundreds witnessed the carnage inside. no one had any incorporatingly of the horror to come. the lone gunman watched the film like everybody else until he use hisdz cellphone and then he slipped through the door to get an arsenal of weapons in his car. he went to the front of theater and hurled two green canisters. >> they started hissing and smoke everywhere. by the time i turned the corner they went off and then the shooting. >> then he shot up in the air. everybody started to panic at that point. >> the baby was in my arms at that time. it was just chaos. >> at that moment i remember thinking i'm not going to die in

problems bringing you the live conference conference in aurora talking about the shootings yesterday. hopefully we can get it straightened out. we'll get you the information before the end of this newscast. >> in other news, in less than an hour, contra costa firefighters will remember two of their own who battled a fire and died. they will be honored in public memorial ceremony at concord training division station. they died while searching for two elderly residents inside a burning home. they were overcome by heat and flames in a phenomenon known as flashover. they are under 16 firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1969. >> crews now have the robbers fire burning in placer county fully contained. yesterday 29-year-old person was

arrested and held on suspicious of setting fire to property. it has burned 6200 acres and destroyed one home. right now we want to go back to colorado. we have a live news conference from the medical center of aurora. >> wouldn't necessarily show upright away. thankfully we have not found any injuries -- everything made the diagnosis originally is what we're still working with right now. we have 17 in the hospital. we have three patients on the regular floor our trauma floor. four patients in the intensive care units. of the four patients, two of them remain in critical condition but they are stable. we are looking forward blood pressure and oxygen levels all are doing all right. we have plans of moving one of our patients in the icu out to the floor today.

it's going to be a long day for a lot of people. initial adrenalin rush of having something like this happen both for the families is starting to wear off. today is the day there is going to be realization that there is going to be serious long term issues that people have to deal with. we have staff in place as far as mental health counselors. we are listening to a press conference at medical center of aurora, one of the number of medical centers where victims of yesterday's shooting were taken. we are just hearing that there are seven victims still in the hospital at that one location. four of them still in intensive care. two of those in critical but stable condition. that would be the good news. then the sobering news we just heard from doctors saying that

we're back live at aurora, why, where the suspect james holmes lives. suspect in yesterday's movie theater shooting. word coming over, police and firefighters are trying to enter the booby-trapped apartment of the man suspected of gunning down dozens of people. that is coming across the wires. we see some activity. they know they have a very dangerous situation. when they disarm the trip wires that could cause a fire and explosion and trying to prepare everybody for that. that is the latest from colorado right now. lisa argen joining us to talk about weekend forecasts. we got a hot one coming.

>> if you like it warm. temperatures are going to soar. especially over the east bay hills. here is a look high definition emeryville camera. you can see haze at the surface and atmosphere, compromised air quality due to the warming temperatures. there is decreasing relative humidity. live doppler 7 hd showing a little bit low clouds and fog the stratus well offshore. us a look down around santa cruz and the san mateo coast we do have some fog and we are getting pressure on the atmosphere and that is creating some very dense fog, half moon bay, less than a quarter mile visibility. notice the 55 there. but as you head inland, mid 60s, low 70s in antioch. so already a big spread in temperatures and looking at partly cloudy skies toward monterey. 55 there. everyone will have a little sunshine this afternoon. in fact in the next hour or two,

that fog is going to clear. it's rapidly continued to go to compress. so this weekend especially today today we're coming up four to five degrees. tomorrow four to five degrees of cooling. so into the mid-week period we'll get more dramatic cooling but monday in between there, still very summer like. today you'll notice not much left of that deck of low clouds. the stratus right there right now. we'll be looking at more 60s at our beaches. from point reyes to bolinas to half moon bay and pacifica. we're looking at very weak sea breeze and 60s. mid-70s for oakland today but take a look what happens. this big ridge of high pressure building westward and we're getting a piece of that hot air mass. temperatures around the bay today coming up. a strong gradient is keeping that fog out of the bay. in the city today, mid-70s. if you are headed up north, run

of the foster child. >> to help them academically you can make regions for tutoring. you can make recommendations to make sure the child has an instrument, as well. >> he has been an advocate for the same boys for nine years. >> i remember going to the gas station, i asked them do you know how to pump gas. i said come up here and i'll show you. >> they also provide needed clothing and toys for children and teens. >> you need to pay attention to nonverbal cues. >> advocates go through 30 hours worth of training and must commit for one year. lisa is starting her training today. >> make a small difference in one child's life so they could have the same confidence to back productive member of society. >> many advocates with the same child for years. >> anybody with an open heart
