what just happened? ow. something hit me. >> reporter: a bullet had shot through the theater wall. >> we got up and were pushing each other out, like go, go, we need to get out. >> reporter: that's had they say the chaos. >> a lot of people with shot wounds in their arms and their legs. i saw a woman holding a baby who was shot in the leg. >> reporter: the three ran out with the crowd to get help for their friend. once the girls were on their way home, they called their mom back at the hotel. >> malia is calling me and she was just crying and pretty hysterical. >> reporter: mom stayed on the phone until they returned. >> we were standing down in front of the hotel. i'm in my pj's, barefoot. and we're all on the phone to our individual kids, like trying to get directions and guide them. and calm them down. they were in two cars and then the two cars arrived basically

together. at that point everybody started crying. >> reporter: of course, there were lots of hugs after that. now, they tell me their friend who was shot went into surgery, but is now out. back at the hotel with all the other kids that are there and doing well. so they are trying to move on from this, but again a traumatic experience. alan? >> also is the family coming straight home or will they continue with their plans? >> actually they had something else planned after the conference wraps up tomorrow. they were planning to go to the rocky mounts for a little while. they've unfortunate been there, wanted to see it and decided this should not let them change their lives. >> okay. thank you. we'll see you tonight at 11:00 o'clock. bomb squad ask weapons experts are outside the apartment of james holmes which is full of chemical, trip wires and explosives. but a major threat has been removed today. technicians say the apartment was wired to kill whoever

entered it. they had to get past a trip wire at the door, then disarm an explosive device before blowing up another. >> it went very, very well. the threat has not been completely eliminated. it has been significantly reduced. >> authorities say holmes was planning his attack for months based on the number of deliveries to his apartment and work. chemicals and materials. the chemicals were taken to a remote location to be blown up. all 12 victims have been identified. the youngest is six-year-old veronica moser. her mom is in critical condition. air force sergeant jesse child did he say, and two others were also killed. blunk shield his girlfriend. rebecca wingo leaves behind two children. gordon cowden and alexander tekes died. the other victims are jessica gawri and others. mcquinn dove in front of his

girlfriend to protect her. from new york to the bay area action there isen increased police presence at that's rights all over the country. this is video from san mateo where police are patrolling outside the theater showing the "dark knight rises." in san jose, frightened patrons were evacuated from a movie theater there. now we hear why. >> reporter: things are back to normal at east ridge mall examine movie that's right after what mall security calls a false alarm. just after noon, patrons got quite a scare. this is cell phone video shot moments after the entire amc movie theater and east ridge mall and east san jose were evacuateed. it was a stressful but orderly exit as all 15 theaters emptied. >> 45 minutes into the movie, an

employee walked in and basically told everyone to evacuate. >> reporter: andrew was watching "dark knight rises" when alarms started sounding. according to police, there were no emergencies, no crimes, and no threats reported. it was all simply an issue involvina water main alarm malfunctioning. as a result, the entire east ridge complex was shut down for 30 minutes. >> i thought it was a repeat of what happened in the other state. >> reporter: theater management and several major bay area cities, including san jose, have upped security in light of yesterday's attack in colorado. many have brought in extra private security guards. while san jose police told officers to patrol theaters on foot and by car if they aren't responding to a call. and this lady plans to take a break from the movies this week. >> when something like this happens today, it scared us. >> reporter: as for movie goers who were forced to evacuate,

we grabbedhem and opened the doors and brought her in. >> reporter: the child was quickly rushed to children's hospital where she was listed in stable condition. police believe she was the innocent victim of a drive-by shooting. they do not have many details so far about the shooter or the intended target. police say they only have a very basic description about the suspect vehicle. they say it was a lexus with no hub caps. also the fire captain tells me that they didn't get a really good look at the vehicle either because they were inside the bay and the bay doors were closed. reporting live in oakland, abc 7 news. >> still to come, another bay

contain ago white substance. san francisco instantly joined five other bay area police departments that have been mailed envelopes containing a suspicious powder. san francisco assistant fire chief says even though four of the other envelopes mailed contain flour, the response here was immediate. >> you don't want to get into complacency that we write it off before we investigate it. if we get a report, especially a high profile group like the police or politicians or whatever, we're going to respond appropriately. >> reporter: yesterday almeda county haz-mat teams were called to investigate envelopes white powder. hayward and four others all discovered envelopes with the white powder inside. in all but the union city incident, the substance was flour. the union city envelope was unopened and turned over to the f.b.i police departments all over the bay area were alerted to these

envelopes after the first one was opened in hayward yesterday morning. the f.b.i. and u.s. postal inspectors are on the case. we're told that each one of these envelopes actually had a postmark on it. but investigators aren't letting us know exactly where they were mailed from. reporting live in san francisco, tomas roman. >> thank you. a motorcycle driver died in a violent collision in san francisco this morning. it happened shortly after 9:00 o'clock on caesar chavez street between evans and pennsylvania. a man on a motorcycle was driving eastbound on caesar chavez when he collided with a van driving westbound. police say the motorcycle driver was decapitated. the driver of the van is cooperating with police. just ahead, it was a hot day, but what's ahead tomorrow? meteorologist lisa is coming up with her forecast. >> would the giants get the better of philly and adam scott's tournament to lose. the aussie takes control at the

beautiful day out there. hot in other areas. >> yeah. 100 today. average high, 89. you can see what's on the way. the fog is beginning to move underneath the golden gate bridge. very difficult fuse examine shallow layer. pretty quiet. but we will look for the low clouds and fog to return. high temperatures today, yeah, it was baking out in the east bay. 100 in livermore. the relative humidity at about 16%. so very, very dry. we're looking at more of that moisture headed our way. 74 in the city. should be about 66 for this time of year. so yeah, it was warmer than normal and temperatures will be coming down just a little bit for the rest of your weekend. 66 right now in the city. 78 in freemont with 91. still over a 30-degree spread. 97 in antioch. enjoy the warm evening. we're look at the winds continuing to pump up tonight. that is bringing pretty good

breeze. we've got low 60s and the fog around monterey. some of the winds gusty. northwest, gusting to 23 miles an hour for mountain view. you'll notice pretty breezy to windy at sfo. wind gusts of 30 miles an hour. winds picked up in the afternoon. fog stayed away. now it's beginning to come back. we have a weak system moving across the bay area tomorrow. that will bring slightly cooler temperatures. then once it moves east of us, we'll warm it up a few degrees on monday, then bring it back down tuesday and wednesday. the theme for up and down temperatures day-to-day. tonight the fog along the shore line, pushing in around hayward and oakland. you'll wake up to fog. numbers in the 50 by 5:00 o'clock tomorrow morning. 5 in livermore and the culprit is a weak upper level low that will push on through tomorrow and that's going to bring our cooling. the marine layer will grow taller. 1,000 feet. then once again, it's going to get compressed on monday. that's going to bring the

numbers back up again into the 90s. that's the short-term. when you wake up tomorrow, the fog. hayward, castro valley, in the north bay. by 9:00 o'clock, everyone is pretty much mostly sunny and that triple digit heat pressed back into the inland valley. so we'll enjoy a more comfortable day. if you thought it was too hot today. 85 in campbell. 84 in sunnyvale. 66 downtown. coming down about 8 degrees tomorrow. in the north bay, look for near east bay to still be on the warm to hot side. here a pleasant 73 in oakland. 94 in pittsburgh. by the monterey bay, the fog and the low clouds early and then clearing with 60s at monterey. you notice the down and then further down and a little up again by the end of the workweek. >> not bad. thank you. collin is in for mike today. and tiger woods is working hard at the british open.
