noontime we are clear. 60s and the upper 70s. notice the warmer temperatures inland in the 90s, but mid-90s. we look for pleasant numbers this evening. further cooling on the way for the week ahead. i'll show you that a bit ahead. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. victims of friday's movie theater massacre will be remembered tonight at a number memorial in aurora, colorado. right now the death toll stands at 12 killed, and 58 were injured after a gunman opened fired in a movie theater showing the new batman movie. the suspect, james holmes, is being held in solitary confinement in a local jail. he is expected to make his first court appearance tomorrow. police say he planned the attack for months. they have now cleared his apartment of booby traps by safely detonating the explosives and flammable liquids left behind. some of the survivors are

beginning to return to the scene of the tragedy. we are there bring you their story. >> the community of aurora is banding together. this message of hope, love and sorrow is the latest show of hope for the 12 people who died and those injured in the movie theater shooting as suspected shooter james holmes sits in jail. some of the people who lived throughout horror returned to the scene. >> i haven't been able to sleep. all of it has been going through my head. >> lisa tells me she was fortunate enough to get out of the theater not long after the shooting began. >> i was like five feet away from him. he had a gas mask on and a bulletproof vest and gunshots on him and one on his waste and he took the one in his hand and it started going off. >> her step dad used to live in cupertino so she had family in the area. they know century 16 is where she usually goes for big movie premieres.

>> everybody was calling off the hook because they know we live in the area. they know we love to go to movies >> she came back for her car but didn't want to be there. two others did not return to the theater. >> it was just total chaos. it was total panic and total a chaos and it's kind of a blush. >> they live in san rafael but threw to aurora with their mother for a conference. they convinced her to let them go to the showing with friends. >> you worry about whether they can drive to the theater but it never occurred to you to worry about something like this. >> the girls were one theater over from the shooting but the bullet pierced the wall and hit their friend. >> he had a hole in his forearm and blood was coming out of it. they rushed out of the theater to get help for their friend, who they say is in good spirits today. >> they all say it's still very surreal, but the girls and their mom, they seem to be doing well. the girls were chatty and friendly and giggling together and they say it's not going to

let them stop them from living their lives abc7 news. >> and abc7 news will continue to bring us live reports this evening and tweet updates using hashtag theatershooting. police say they should be finished investigating the suspect's apartment by tomorrow. yesterday the apartment was cleared of explosives which helped preserve clues that could lead to a motive in this massacre. a bomb squad blew up an explosive device so other crews could get inside. chemicals were gathered up and driven to a remote location. police officials say the apartment was wired to kill whoever came through the door. it was going to be a police officer, okay? so make no mistake about it what was going on there.

if you think we are angry, we sure as hell are angry. >> police say holmes could months to plan the rampage. all twelve victims have now been identified. the young is a six-year-old veronica mozer. her mom is in critical condition. a boy, johnathan blonk was also killed and an air force sergeant. rebecca was a mom with two kids. gordon began and alexander also died. the other victims are jessica ghawi, john larimer, matt mcquinn and alex sullivan. many of the victims died heroes. david wright has their stories. >> there was a real life villain inside that theater but real life heros, too. people saved their girlfriend's lives by sacrificing their own. sailor john laramier leaped over his seat to shield his girlfriend. then his buddies dragged his body out of the theater, not

willing to leave a man behind. alex jumped in front of his girlfriend, taking a bullet that would have his her. and target employee matt mcquinn saved his girlfriend and coworker samantha the same way. she was injured, shot in the leg, but her family said mcquinn's quick actions saved her life. the coroner broke the news to the families. many had been frantic all day with missing loved ones. >> tell me where he is, okay? find my son. i don't know where he is. okay? somebody find him and call us. tell him to call us. >> his son never called. it was his birthday. instead of celebrating, his father learned he's dead. >> in hospital rooms across the denver area, survivors are struggling to make sense of all of this. this 14-year-old now has a bullet hole in his back. >> is that bullet still inside you? >> it's still inside but they said they aren't taking it out because it's in a safe place and won't do me any harm. i see life differently. >> how so?

it's shocking to see how fast you could die, how fragile life is. >> how do you think this is going to change your life? >> it's going to make me more careful in what i do. i'll try to think twice before i do something. and how movie premieres, there's a lot of people, maybe i'll wait for a dvd. >> that's abc's david wright reporting. the tragedy in colorado has bay area movie theaters stepping up security. the guardian angels are patrolling a san francisco theater complex where a batman movie is playing and in san jose a theater was quickly evacuated this weekend when an alarm sounded. we have the details. don't worry about it. don't freak out. >> this is cell phone video of the amc theater in san jose moments after an order to evacuate was heard. all 15 theaters were emptied out after an alarm started blaring at the eastridge theater.

according to san jose police, it was an alarm from a malfunctioning water main but they thought it was another attack. >> i thought it was a repeat of what happened. >> the complex was closed for half-hour. security has been ramped up in many theaters showing the batman film. save hose police have told officers to stop by the complex when not answering calls. at san francisco, the guardian angels have taken up patrols around the theater. he said sometimes just their presence is a deterrent. >> we are keeping an eye on people that they look suspicious. our job is to make sure that we can deter anything that might happen. >> if anything, the presence of either police or the guardian angels is a grim reminder of how a night out can turn into a nightmare. she came by with a three-month-old child to check on future batman showings. she won't come anytime soon. >> because of what happened, i'll scared.

reception at the fox theater in oakland. no parking and tollway signs have been posted on light policy surrounding the theater venue. as always, security will be stepped up for the president's visit. republican mitt romney arrives today for three bay area fundraisers starting this afternoon. first he will collect campaign cash at $50,000 a plate luncheon at the home of tom seeble. the presumptive republican nominee will also attend a private dinner in san francisco's pacific heights hosted by former giants managing parter peter mcgowan. and he will cap it off with a fundraiser at the fairmont hotel hosted by shockley's ceo, mr. barnett. coming up, the university makes a decision about the statue of joe paterno in the wake of the jerry sandusky investigation. and a woman convicted of

fbi director louie free found paterno and three top administrators at penn state covered up for former assistant coach jerry sandusky, who awaits sentencing for child molestation. university president rodney erickson said in a statement he realizes his decision to remove paterno's statue will not be popular with some on campus, but he said he is certain it is the right thing to do. a sight few the thought would ever happen, gay and lesbian members of the military marching in a gay pride parade in uniform. thousands of the supporters in the crowd showed gratitude to the gay service members, some even saluting them. support also came from straight members of the military. just last week the department of the defense gave active duty military members the go ahead to wear their uniforms at this parade.

>> it's a really great day knowing that a couple years ago we could have been discharged for the simple fact of being gay and now to the fact we can be proud of who we are and not hide who we are. it's a fantastic day. fantastic day. >> last year the military dropped it's don't-ask-don't-tell policy that cost many their military careers. a bay area assemblywoman convicted of shoplifting last year plans to run for office in alameda county. today "the chronicle" reports east bay assemblywoman mary hiashi has filed papers declaring her intent to run for the supervisor seat left vacant. she resigned the post recently to deal with personal matters. former union city councilman richard available currently serves in her seat. the paper says he also intends to run in november. hiashi remains on probation after leading no contest to shoplifting $2,500 worth of clothes from neiman marcus in union square. despite the disadvantage she has

as is usual on weekends around here there are lots of things on at that point, and it seems like the weather is going to cooperate. >> yeah, it got kind of hot yesterday, triple digits. >> in some places. >> yeah, 100 in beckel and 80s in oakland and 70s here. as we head outside now it looks nice and clear although there are some clouds beginning to push into the south bay. today you will be cooler.

yesterday we saw some 90s in the santa clara valley. today we will take a back boo the mid-80s. closer to home some flags are blowing there. you will notice there's a little fog out there from the roof camera, but not much. where we have it it could be dense. be careful. the marine layer up and over 1200 feet this morning. live doppler 7 hd showing that all is clear from mount saint helena and south but the cloud is beginning to invade napa, into the east bay and also on to the peninsula. that's a switch. yesterday we were clear and warmed up quickly. today still some rapid warming in the east bay. notice we are starting out in the 60s here. higher elevations above 1200 feet it's in the 70s. we had a couple readings in the upper 60s. 57 receipt now in mountain view, 54 in san francisco. we will see the west winds pick up a little today and that will spread some of the cooling not only from the beaches into the

city but across the bay into oakland and also a southerly surge takes over tonight. that's going to aid in the cooling up in the north bay and in the peninsula, on the peninsula. areas of fog this morning. a little cooler, anywhere from three to five degrees of cooling. we will look for more cooling each and every day. still a few 90s to hold on to tomorrow, and then temperatures will be dropping to below average readings for the rest of the work week. that includes next weekend. here's our water vapor imagery. there is a little something in the atmosphere just moving over the bay area. this is aiding and pulling up that low cloudiness and allowing for the marine air to make it all the way, just a piece of it, to the delta. so with that, that's going to bring the temperatures out of the triple digits. so for today, then, just a little bit cooler. we will say anywhere from three to five degrees cooler. the next couple of days the on shore flow increases and we look for a little more cooling. so it all becomes gradual

instead of that 15-degree drop in one day, we will take it day-to-day with maybe two to five degrees of cooling each day. this afternoon it looks nice in oakland. 105, temperatures starting out in the 70s under sunny skies. a little bit of a breeze. upper 70s by the afternoon, say 3:00, 4:00. back home numbers in the upper 60s in san francisco. we have 90s, but not the pot hot 90s, i would say warm to hot from concord to livermore. 85 in san jose. 61 in half moon bay. 90 in morgan hill with 60s and clearing conditions by the afternoon in monterey. the look ahead, notice more cooling on tuesday but dramatic cooling gets underway midweek and then it looks like our temperatures struggling to top out in the 80s in our inland valleys. that might be too cool for july standards in the east bay. >> you make me smile when you say not the hot, hot 90s. >> the hot, hot, about 100, and

assault rifle that he used in that shooting, jammed during the attack which forced the shooter to switch to another gun with less firepower. police say he took months to plan the rampage that killed twelve people and injured dozens more. abc's rebecca stevens is in aurora to bring us more on the investigation. president obama heads to colorado today to console a community grieving and trying to understand one of the worst mass shootings in the nation's history. >> whoever thought that it would immediately affect my family when i see other shootings and events and i think, oh, my gosh, i can imagine what those families are going through. now i can imagine. >> the suspect, james holmes, was set on a path of destruction, not only killing and injuring dozens in a colorado movie theater, but in his apartment was a minefield of explosive booby traps, designed to kill anyone that entered.

saturday was spent detonating the traps. >> make no mistake this apartment was designed, based on everything i have seen, to kill whoever entered it. >> as authorities searched holmes' apartment for evidence, we are learning more about the suspect. so far just a fephotos of james holmes have emerged. here he is smiling in his high school yearbook. and as a neuroscience ph.d. student at the university of colorado. holmes was one of the half-dozen ph.d. students with federal grants for the national institutes of health, studying neuroscience. and those who know holmes call him quiet and an introvert. >> a nice kid, grew up in a nice neighborhood, and i don't know what happened >> he was the kind of person that if you teased him, he would just sort of sit there and smile and really not do anything about it. >> according to reports, holmes is in a county jail, apparently locked up for his own protection. he is due in court on monday.

>> late saturday there were false reports of a second suspect, but police interviewed a person of interest and dismissed him. reporting in aurora, colorado, rebecca stevens, abc7 news. >> as often happens after the mass shootings, the colorado shootings have turned the spotlight on gun control. suspect james holmes appears to have obtained his arsenal legally. tom lost his son daniel in the killings at columbine high school. he said not enough has been done to toughen gun laws since that massacre that left 13 people dead. but not everyone agrees. >> it makes me sad for america that we have other countries looking at us saying what is going on there? are you people nuts? >> you can't stop selling guns. you just have to -- if you are going to be in an armed country, you have to deal with occasional fruit loops, i think. >> after columbine, colorado passed the law requiring gun shows to run background checks

in critical condition at oakland children's hospital. she was the victim of a drive-by shooting yesterday afternoon. it happened at the corner of bancroft and 50th avenue in oakland. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana explains how she was shot right in front of at fire station. >> rhonda said she was walking with her daughter and her friend's little girl in front of fire station 18. her daughter was playing with the station's doorbell when the gunman started shooting. >> that's all we heard was pow, pow, pow, pow, and she started walking slow and looked back and gush out with blood. >> the firefighters heard the gunshots and quickly went outside to see what was happening. >> we grabbed them and open the doors and brought her in. innocent bystander shooting. >> firefighters quickly worked on the five-year-old girl, stabilized her and rushed her here to children's hospital where her mother tells me she remains in the intensive care unit >> the bullet went inside her

neck and in the back of her bone. it's lodged inside the is skin and the bone. they are trying to see does the bullet need to be removed or should they leave the bullet there. >> police don't have much information to work with about the shooter and the suspect car. it's described only as a late model lexus with no hub caps. davis is angry. she wants anyone who saw what happened to call the police. >> somebody seen that car but if you are a for real person, you know who you are. you know what you did. step up to the plate. turn yourself in. >> in oakland, abc7 news. this morning the highway patrol and oakland police are piecing together the chain of events last night that led to windows of a chp cruiser being shot out. the officer was not injured. it began as a traffic stop of a white van because one of the occupants wasn't wearing a

seatbelt, but two people jumped out of that van and tried to get away by wading through a canal. a black accura drove up on the scene near 880 and 66th avenue. the accura rammed the chp cruiser and fired shots into the car. a chp spokesman said the car had been reported stolen earlier. so far no arrests, no reports at least of anyone being arrested. the investigation continues. this morning postal inspectors and the fbi are investigating a rash of letters containing a suspicious white powder being sent to bay area police departments. oakland, union city, berkeley, hayward, san leandro and now san francisco have had similar letters delivered in the past two days. yesterday an envelope arrived at san francisco's northern station on fillmore street around 11:00 a.m. even though four of the other five envelopes contained flour, their response was immediate. >> we don't want to get into a sense of complacency that we write the incident off before we investigate it.

so if we get a report, especially a high profile group like the police or politicians or whatever, we are going to respond appropriately. >> the substance sent there also turn out to be flour. >> a fund raiser is held in concord this afternoon to benefit a twelve-year-old girl when all three were struck by an s.u.v. when riding their bicycles. it occurred in april as they rode alongside the boulevard. a teenager has been arrested but no formal k charges yet. it is expected soon. today's fundraiser is helped to pay for one who survived the crash.

the world's largest a.i.d.s. conference opens today in washington, d.c., and it marks a turning point in the 30 year battle against the pandemic. researchers will be announcing that an end to a.i.d.s. is finally a realistic goal. abc7 news reporter mark matthews has the story. the head of the a.i.d.s. division told reporters this is a remarkable time. >> because for the first time we are going to be talking about the beginning of the end of the a.i.d.s. epidemic. >> the director of the a.i.d.s. division points to a series of breakthroughs, studies that prove that a combination of antiviral drugs could reduce transmission of a.i.d.s. by 96%. male circumcision reduces the risk by half and in 2007 timothy brown underwent a bone marrow transplant and became the first person ever to become cured of the disease. >> when you sum it all up and put them all together, we feel

like we are at a defining moment of the epidemic and a turning point of the epidemic. >> at sf general it has been a long road. this man is a nurse working with a.i.d.s. patient since '85. >> i turn 50 this year. i was 23, i think. most of my life. >> in the first decade he said he worked mostly in hospice centers for people with a.i.d.s. >> those days there wasn't much we could offer. >> but from 1996 onwards when the drug treatments began to show dramatic results, he said his view of the disease changed. >> i didn't always believe that we would see the end of this epidemic and i'm not confident, i'm not 100% sure we are seeing the end of the epidemic, but i have great hopes. >> mark matthews, abc7 news. >> it would be a significant development. lisa argen is here now to talk about weather, and i don't know what to say. >> okay. then i'll say it for you. we've had some pretty shots with

mid-670s for antioch. and last hour mt. diablo was up to 72 degrees. the higher elevations where we keep the warmth and down closer to where we live, we get the consumer air and the influence of this inversion. 55 oakland, 57 in san carlos and mountain view with 60 and a few clouds around san jose. so the areas of fog have developed this morning. the deck of low clouds is shallow so we will be looking at some of the fog dense along the shoreline from time too time. that will bring in a little bit of cooling. three to six degrees today with a few degrees of cooling each and every day, allowing for temperatures to come on down into the mid-80s to low 80s by the middle of the week and that's in the inland valleys. here's the reason why. as we put it in motion there's a little twist in the atmosphere. this is an area of low pressure. an upper level trough that is allowing for the marine layer to pick up and transport the cooler air. the west winds up to 20 miles an hour today. you notice the fog pulling back.

full sunshine by the afternoon. so another mild day around the bay and instead of the very hot weather inland approaching 100 degrees, we will see more mid-90s. not much of a cool down in the east bay, but you kind of expect that for mid-july out over the hills, to get that really warm temperature reading. boy, we could be a lot warmer than that. in fact, so could they. sacramento, just 102. they have had a string of some comfortable readings this week. 105 in fresno with sierra nevada from the low 60s in the north. a few extra clouds and maybe an isolated thunderstorm in the southern sierra. back home mid-80s should do it for campbell and san jose today on the peninsula low 60s half moon bay. 74 milbrae. san francisco cooler today, 68 with afternoon sun and in the north bay look for numbers ranging from 90 in ukiah to 85 in san rafael. 74 berkeley. 84 newark. here's where we have some heat.
