to appear in court. the town in aurora paid tribute to the 12 people gunned down in the theater, and abc7 news an ama dates was there and she joins us live in aurora, colorado. >> the turnout for the vigil was incredible. so many people showed up to pay their respects to those killed in the movie theater shooting. as one man said to me, there was a sense of family. a pledge from the community of aurora to the 12 people shot and killed in friday's movie theater shooting. this vigil at the aurora municipal center brought together family, friends and the ever watchful eye of police. but this wasn't a time to be afraid. no gunman can shake this city's spirit. >> he will get his. >> reporter: many here didn't know any of the victims, but

it makes no difference. >> everyone is affected in one way or another because of this tragedy. >> and together they stand. >> it is aurora. it is what we do. >> and they have been doing it all day bringing messages of love to the scene of the tragedy. greg even made a wooden cross for each victim and drove 16 hours from illinois to place them here permanently. >> we want to show the family members that we will not forget their names. we just learned it yesterday. no family member wants to be forgot. >> now, the vigil lasted an hour and a half. there are still people here tonight. it has been hours since it ended. in fact, out of the corner of my high, i can still see the flicker of candles. as you mentioned the suspect will be in court, and i will be there as well so i can bring you live reports on the later editions of abc news. live in aurora, colorado, ama dates, abc news. >> see you tomorrow evening.

now to what we have learned about the victims and the loved ones they left behind. here is cecilia vega. >> there are so many faces, so many stories, lives lost simply because they went to see a movie . the oldest, 51, gordon cowden, a real estate uh praiser who took his two teens with him that night. they escaped. the youngest victim just six years old, little veronica sullivan. her mother shot in the neck clings to life. yesterday her family broke the news about what happened to her daughter. jay she was such a wonderful little girl. so sad she had her life taken so early. >> there are stories of courage, people who lost lives by saving others. john threw his girlfriend on the floor to shield her from the gunfire. matt mcquinn dove on his girl friend and took the bullet instead. >> i did what a man is supposed to do. you protect the ones you love.

>> reporter: he just finished grad school and wanted to be a physical therapist. aj with dreams of a life as art teacher just graj -- graduating. and another person going to be the best birthday ever. friends said, let us know you are okay. and then, oh my gosh, was he there? makayla medic was there too. friends called her kayla. she worked as a sandwich maker. rebecca was a mother of two and spent 11 years in the air force and was fluent in mandarin and worked as a translator. jesse childress also in the air force, a he dservist. he died as a hero diving in front of a friend, a female service member. >> he was the kind of guy who you want on your team. >> john larimer's team of fellow sailors wouldn't leave him behind dragging his body out after leaping over a seat to save his girlfriend. and one story defies the

odds. a story with a lesson for all of us. jessica gawhy, a sports journalist ironically a few weeks ago escaped another mass shooting in a toronto mall. >> abc's cecilia vega reporting. president obama spent part of the day visiting with families of those who lost their lives in friday as masser c. >> when you have an opportunity to visit with families who have lost their loved ones as i describe to them, i come to them not so much as president as i do as a father and as a husband. >> the president also met with some of the survivors who are in the hospital. mr. obama praised police and first responders for their efforts following the tragedy. the president then left colorado for a campaign fundraising swing in the bay area. coming up at 11:30, what we have learned tonight about the shooter, james holmes. stay with abr7 news for continuing coverage of the colorado theater masacre.

you can also get the latest anytime on abc7 news.com. president obama and republican mitt romney are both in san francisco tonight. abc7 news ro thomas roman joins us from the inter continental hotel where the president is spending the night. thomas? >> we are on fourth and howard. howard street is actually closed between fourth and fifth because the president is staying at the inter continental hotel down the street. this closure has caused a big traffic jam. and while mitt romney has finished his fundraising in san francisco, president obama is just about to start. air force 1 arrived at san francisco international airport at 8:15, an hour behind schedule after the president's visit to colorado. president obama gave a short wave, but there was no fanfare. the only people here to greet him were the media since the public was not invited to his arrival. early monday morning president obama will be taking air force 1 to reno, nevada.

there he will be attending the national convention of the veterans for foreign wars. later on monday the president will fly to the fox theater. the cheapest ticket is $100 if you can get one. and then another two fundraisers nearby where he is expected to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars. mitt romney is also in san francisco. both are here to tap into some major fundraisers. alex clemens is a political consultant. >> california has sohat barack a a state that barack obama is going to win for the past several years. that's not going to change with these visits. they are purely to raise money. >> an intimate $15,000 a plate luncheon was held in romney -- for romney. he then attended a reception at the fare moppet hotel. those who attended ponied up $2500 to $10,000. there was a protest outside. but it was small because many decided 20* fore go the

a four-alarm fire is burning on camden avenue in san jose right now at the del coronado apartment complex. flames were reported just after nan:00. so far there are no reports of

injuries there. firecrews are keeping a watch on the aftermath of a wildfire. they are trying to determine exactly how it started. john alston has more from vacaville. >> the flames raced up the hillside toward this home on looking nanny was lookingle. after her one-year-old baby boy. >> i just happened to walk out the backdoor and saw the flames and went back inside and grabbed the baby and called 911 and left. >> she didn't have time to take the family's two spaniels who were outside in their dog run. they were fine. >> she actually saw it and grabbed my son and called 911 and left my house because it was already coming up the fields. she just grabbed the kid and left. >> the brushfire broke out around 2:15 in the afternoon.

sky 7hd was overhead as firefighters hustled to prevent the flames from reaching a half dozen homes in the hills. the fire grew to a maximum eight alarms. it brought out 150 firefighters from around vacaville and the bay area. three helicopters dop ped their buck -- dipped their buckets into the pond. the hundred-degree heat was brutal, but they caught a break. >> the big fen fit it was there wasn't much wind. really lucky because there was no heavy winds. >> the fire burned about 75 acres even after it was under control one neighbor refused to sit back and watch. and the professional firefighters are keeping an eye on the burn area through the evening. abc7 news. in tracy, another big grass fire. sky 7hd was over the scene awhee still smoldering grass. firefighters responded to the area near coral hollow road.

the fire spread to 97 acres before the flames were finally stopped. and a huge traffic jam on interstate 28 after an accident blocked all northbound lanes in san francisco. four vehicles collidedr nea the geneva avenue exit just before 5:30 p.m. one car burst into flames. d up being rushed to the hospital. it took more than 90 minutes to clear the freeway. two anaheim officers involved in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man have been placed on leave. the shooting lead to a violent clash between witnesses and police last night. the crude threw rocks and bottles at officers who then used pepper spray and rubber bullets to break up the croid. to the crowd. five people were arrested there. san jose's police chief is expected to reveal whether his department will grant a permit for a new casino near the san jose mineta airport. this after the owner of the casino went to court to speed up the permit approval process.

casino matrix planned to open in april. but other city officials wanted to address concerns they have about the new casino. a fundraiser was held in concord for the survivor of a deadly crash that took the lives of her sister and her dad. in april, nine-year-old nuri and her father were out by sickly when they were -- by by sick lig when they were struck and killed. hannah was with them, but she survived. >> i felt that because her mom was a single mom it might be harder. i wanted to make sure to do something for them and to make sure her life would continue the way it was before her dad passed away. hanna for hannah's education. and we want to take a minute tonight to say thank you, bay area. you helped raise thousands of dollars for bay area foster children just by liking abc7 news on fates book. just -- facebook. a few of our new fans were lie

way in. we want to show you isolated thunderstorms. we are picking this up nicely. you can see the lightning strikes just to the east of sacramento near rock land and all the way down toward arnold and sonora. you can see them just moving from south to north here. they should start to die down as we get into the early morning hours tomorrow morning. but suffice to say a little rumbling as we head toward the spine of the sierra of the here is a look at our highs. antioch 99. hot in the north bay. cloverdale hit 100 dries. 100 degrees. half moon bay with a touch of fog. 65 today. san jose was 85 degrees. right now still holding some of the heat. check out anteing yo. 86 degrees right now. it is 72 in concord and san francisco is reporting 56. 62 in san rafael and 64 in san jose. low clouds will be moving inland overnight. it will be very patchy.

it will make for a cooler day inland tomorrow, and then more cooling expected into tuesday and wednesday. overnight temperatures inland, it is going to be mild. midmaybe even upper 60s because i know antiochis in the 80s right now. we will go request 64 degrees. near the coast temperatures are cooler in the mid to low 50s with the fog developing. in fact, you can see our fog cast by 4:00, 5:00 in the morning. a little patchy innd la, but it is going to stick near the coast, and then by tomorrow afternoon it will pull away just a little bit, and then roar back in after sunset tomorrow afternoon. here is a look at the set up. the low pressure will pass to the north of us. that will mean a cooler day inland. you will still be in the 90s. then as another low tracks to the coast on tuesday and wednesday, this is really going to be the cooling mechanism that brings the cool air to the bay area. temperatures will drop into the low 80s.

adam scott was on the verge of winning his first major. golf can be oh so cruel. scott's name was ready to be engraved, that's how close he was. a bunker on six and you can say tiger was brought to his knees, literally. he finally gets it out, but gets a triple bogey 7. tiger finished tied for third four shots back. the long putter failed him down the stretch. his par putt and meanwhile ernie els finished his round of 68 with this long birdie. that put him in the clubhouse at seven under. look at the crowd's reaction. they could hear the roar on 17 where he found the deep rough with the second shot. he gets it on to the green, but he would make his third straight bogey dropping him into a tie with els. he gives himself a chance with this great shot. scott needed the par putt to force a playoff. but he misses by that much of the he had four straight bogies in the day. els wins his fourth major

camden avenue was put out minutes ago. fire officials tell us flames were confined to one apartment at the del coronado complex. two people were injured, one with burns and the other with smokeen though inhalation even h the fire was just in one of the apartments, up to 50 people have been left homeless. imeeng. -- good evening. i'm alan wang. president obama is staying overnight in san francisco. earlier today he visited with families of the victims of the colorado masacre. the president will attend and host fundraisers in oakland tomorrow. presumptive presidential nominee mitt romney was also in the bay area where he attended three fundraisers. and a grass fire in vacaville 75 burned 75 acres before firefighters gained control. the eight-alarm blaze was dangerously close, but there was no damage. and in tracy a fire burned 97 acres before being contained.

flames came up to the edge of the 580 freeway near coral hollow road. turning now to the tragedy in colorado, police say suspect james holmes has lawyered up and is not cooperating. this on a day abc news received exclusive footage of holmes speaking at a science camp. >> people feel like they have a super power and i might let them have more fun diswhrie. was tape from six years ago. abc news the suspect might have sought mental health counsel -- counseling. david wright says experts may see something in that video. >> how could a smart, young phd candidate morph into a mass murderer? authorities are trying to answer that question. >> we want to show you this video jie. we showed the video to the aurora police psychologist. >> apparently rock, paper scissors is a professional sport. >> one thing, he is a very bright person, very

doctors continue to debate whether or not all children in the u.s. should be tested for high cholesterol levels. this comes after a panel appointed by the government recommended widespread screening. critics published an article in the latest issue of "pediatrics." they called it too aggressive and said there was influence by those who make anti-cholesterol medication. high end computer technology developed in the helping could soon beng researchers around the country. the goal is to look at one of the fastest computers in the world. abc7 news health and science reporter carolyn johnson has the details. crunc>> from cruncn
