> thank you for joining us i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. breaking news, two people dead following early morning apartment fire in martinez. fires are on the scene now. firefighters responded after 3:30 this morning. we are just getting word two people killed in an apartment fire in martinez this morning. stay with the abc7 morning news, amy hollyfield is head together scene and will bring a live update later. developing news in oakland. a nearly 12 hour police standoff is over. s.w.a.t. teams surrounded a house on the 2300 block of east 24th street 3:00 yesterday afternoon when investigators tracked the pair of suspects who they say shot at a highway patrol officer

last weekend. officers were on the scene until the standoff ended totalling 12 hours in the end one person was taken into custody. oakland police also closed off streets around west grand and telegraph last night while she searched for a robbery suspect. the robbery was reported 8:30 in the 500 block of west grand. police told residents to stay in and others to avoid the area. protesters were walking through the neighborhood marching to and from the fox theater where president obama was giving a speech. police say the robbery is not believe to be related. this morning police in rich mop investigating the death of a father killed during a struggle over a gun with his son. the shooting happened 7:00 last night in a house on sun court. police say 41-year-old james morris was shot and killed during an argument. they are not releasing the name and age of his son.

this morning federal officials are looking for the person who has been sending suspicious envelopes to bay area police departments. yesterday a package arrived at fremont police headquarters. police had been on alert since friday when employees opened similar packages at berkeley, san francisco, san leandro, oakland and union city police departments. haz-mat teams determined none of the packages the one yesterday and those sent the past few days pose any danger. fbi is work with police to find the person behind the hoax. richmond residents will get the chance tonight to learn how to benefit from a new national lab that will be built in their city. richmond was selected from eight cities that submitted 21 proposals. the facility will house 800 scientists researching

bioscience, cancer, bioenergy and other cutting-edge work due to open 2016. workshop starts tonight at 7:00. president obama is in san francisco now. he will fly out of bay party in a few hours to portland after a busy night of fundraising. yesterday he held two east bay fundraisers taking in estimated three to four million dollars. this event was held at the fox theater in oakland where people could see the president for donations as little as $100. another event was held at' a piedmont hope. supporters say they took advantage of the rare presidential visit to the east bay >> i was thinking about giving to the obama campaign any way, when i saw the e-mail, it was a no-brainer. >> he's done nothing for the black communicative. >> a block away protesters took over -- took over the intersection of 19th and

broadway and criticized the president over the iraq war and his administration seizing property of medical marijuana clinics. mitt romney is in reno today to speak before the same convention that president obama spoke to yesterday. romney spent yesterday in southern california meeting with small business owners. both are courting the military vote in 2008 polls showed 54% of those who said they served in the military voted for john mccain. 4:35. police say they found dozens of deadly booby traps inside the apartment belonging to the man accused of the movie theater massacre. we had our first glimpse of the man and his behavior in court. katie marzullo with the story. >> reporter: all eyes were on the courtroom yesterday as we got that first glimpse of james holmes. authorities are wide-eyed at what they found in his apartment.

this morning we are getting the item lighted list. -- itemized list. there were 30 ied's attached to trip wires 10 gallons of gas to enhance the thermal effect after explosion. the detonated devices are being taken to virginia for fbi analysis. the man accused of bidding that death trap and shooting and killing 12 people seemed out of it in court yesterday. >> he looked like someone who didn't know what was going on. and that leads to all sorts of important and fascinating legal questions about his mental state. >> reporter: families of some of the victims were in court. a father who lost his son calls holmes a coward. the district attorney says she will be consulting with those families before deciding if she will pursue the death

penalty. holmes has another court appearance next monday this morning the attorney representing the san diego family of james holmes says his parents are standing by him, because he's their son. the attorney read a family statement detailing the call when his mother learned about the shooting from an a reporter. she said the family is doing well considering the circumstances and wants to reiterate their sadness for the victims. the attorney says they are worried about the possibility of the death penalty. she also said aurora police had not yet attempted to contact the family. stay with abc news and abc7news.com for all the latest developments on the colorado theater massacre. we created a slide show remembering the 12 victims on our web. time for a check on the weather. >> clouds out there this morning. let's turn things over to mike. good morning.

landing on a southern california freeway. the 1968 piper ran out of gas, according to the pilot, he had to land in the southbound lanes of the in escondido near san diego last night 11:30. traffic was light, no cars were hit. the pilot has 20 years flying experience. not known why he ran out of gas. america lost a space pioneer yesterday, sally ride the first female u.s. astronaut died at her home near san diego she made history in june of 1983 when she flew into space aboard the challenger. 4 american women have followed -- 42 american women have followed ride into space. the head of nasa says ride broke barriers with class and enthusiasm. she died of pancreatic cancer, she was 61. traffic deaths up,
