other. firefighters are telling us this apartment building did not have a sprinkler system and they say the fire was going strong when they got here here's a picture taken by one of the residents. firefighters say it was coming out of the roof of the unit where the two people died, a couple, boyfriend and girl friend in their mid 30s, their cat also died. everyone else got out okay and many of them have their neighbors to thank. >> sound asleep, somebody started banging on the door, get out. just got my family and left. >> we don't know anything yet about whether there were working smoke alarms in this structure or not that's one of the things that we'll be looking into. if there were no smoke alarms it would be very easy for a fire to progress to the point where people wouldn't be able to get out. >> reporter: it started at 3:30 this morning on donegal way in martinez. many people got out on their

in an apartment complex on the 500 block of west grand. police told residents to stay in and others to an individual the area. protests were walking through marching to and from the fox theater, where president obama was giving a speech. police say the robbery is not believed to be related to the protest. the search continues this morning for the killer who shot a couple to death in san jose while their children slept. someone stormed into a house on north 7th street around 4:00 yesterday morning, following a loud argument, the suspect killed the couple, 26-year-old woman and 28-year-old man were high school sweethearts. a neighbor saw a man running from the house. >> i didn't see his face, he the hoodie on, running. that's the same thing i told the police i didn't see the guy. >> the families of both believe a jealous ex-boyfriend is responsible. president obama will depart from sfo later this morning to continue a west
