5 a.m. on this wednesday morning thank you for joining us i'm eric thomas. i'm kristen sze. vallejo firefighters had a busy night as they battled two fires. one damaged a home, the other a strip mall. amy hollyfield is live at the mall. >> reporter: one fire engine pulled up to this fire here that's all they had left and the captain said he a feeling that he had never experienced before. everyone else was at this fire here are the pictures an old victorian was on fire that had been under renovation. fires say that style of construction is one of the toughest to deal with. everyone was busy on that one when the call came in 15 minutes later for a second fire. the peace baptist church on

sonoma boulevard was on fire in a strip mall it could easily spread. they had only one engine left to send. >> very taxing to have two fires going at the same time. initially, we are used to arriving with back-up right near us and with this one we had to adjust. it was kind of unusual for me. i've been doing this for a long time it is not a normal thing. >> reporter: mutual aid showed up they were able to stop the fire. the sign shop did have smoke damage but the buildings are still standing, an accomplishment considering when the captain pulled up he said he was bracing for the worst. no one was hurt. at the strip mall fire looks like a mechanical problem that started the fire maybe a water heater problem inside the church. amy hollyfield, abc7 news.

developing news from el cerrito now. pg&e crews are trying to find the source of a natural gas leak and cap it so evacuated residents can return home. terry mcsweeney is live near the scene. >> reporter: we got four homes evacuated right now no estimated time when they can go back into their homes. this started 12:30 this morning. take a look at what pg&e crews have been doing. there was a report of the smell of natural gas. firefighters came out, they brought out their equipment and they did an explosive gas reading. they found a pretty significant level of natural gas and they evacuated four corner houses at the intersection of manila and everett. when firefighters pulled up they saw a plume of dust shooting up out of the street. >> this column coming out of

the ground is dried dust where the gas has dried the dirt up and it is a fine powder generated into the air as the gas is leak out of the ground. >> reporter: we've got a two inch gas main rupture, four homes evacuated this has happened underground what is described as a conglomeration of gaslines. right now, pg&e crews, they've dug down at one corner they are going back to another corner and start on both sides of this leak, clamp down that pipe and shut it off. no estimate when that is going to happen. as for the families, they went with family and friends it was orderly. by the time the battalion chief got out here they had already been taken care of for the night. no need for the red cross. four homes evacuated out here. and this pipe still leaking pg&e trying to get on both sides to clamp it down.

terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 5:04 now. antioch police say crime is up in the city for the first six months of this year compared to the same period of last year. the number of arrests are down. the contra costa times reports the police chief told the city council the department's decreased staffing rate is a factor. the chief says violent crimes increased by 45% due to aggravated assaults. property crimes increased 2500 for the first six months of this year compare today to 1500 in the same period of last year. the police department is down 34 officers from 126. the city looking to hire back 10 officers lost through attrition with federal grant money it received. in southern california protesters clashed with riot police as the anaheim council voted to ask the u.s. attorney's office to investigate recent officer-involved shootings.

large crowds gathered for meeting, the demonstrations grew violent people were tossing rocks and bottles at the police when they were shut out because there was no more room. police responded by firing bean bags and pepper crowds in the crowd. several people were realized. a bay area story is being made into a movie. fruitvale is the drama about the shooting of oscar grant by a bart police officer. the transit agency is helping make the production possible. john alston has the details. >> reporter: according to family members and those familiar with the project one of the filming locations fruitvale station in oakland where 22-year-old oscar grant was shot and killed by a bart police officer. the film is being made with the blessing of bart paid an undust disclosed amount by the producers. when there -- there was

film ing -- he would not reveal specific details. the independent film stars oscar winner octavia spencer who plays grant's mother. other filming locations have included highland hospital. police say there will be filming at the san leandro station later this week. the transit spokesman says bart oversees the content so bart is not portrayed in a way that bart does not want to be portrayed. city and transit agency has been keeping details close to the vest >> i would think it has to do with how the case turned out. the controversy behind the case. what kind of appearance it will give oakland with this movie >> reporter: bart officer ym

it is looking like the fed will do something to stimulate the economy disappointed in the sluggish growth particularly in jobs they could take action as soon as next week but more likely in september.

the new operating system for mac computers goes on sale it makes mac work more like iphones and ipads, it will cost $20 and sold as a download free to users who bought their mac on june 11th. this release comes after apple shares fell in after hours trading yesterday on news the company posted smallest growth in two years. twitter working on a system to let users retrieve their old tweets. users only have access to the last few thousand posts. the company is developing a tool to let users export all tweets into a file that can be downloaded. facebook and other sites already allow users to download a file with all their data until now third-party developers -- investors will be keeping a close eye on facebook when

it will release first quarterly earnings report since going in public in may. experts will be looking closely at its business model. it debuted at $38 a share and closed yesterday at just over $28. strong report could restore some of the company's glow. victory for consumers. airlines will no longer be able to hold back the true cost of flying. southwest and spirit airlines have challenged regulations requiring full disclosure of the price in print and online ads. the court of appeals rule the feds have full authority to regulate unfair and deceptive practices. new rules require airlines to allow passengers to cancel without penalty within 24 hours of purchase. airlines are banned from increasing the price and baggage fees after tickets have been bought. not all airports are created equal. some could be tremendous

overnight. two fires broke out at the same time. fires had to call for help. also, two people are hospitalized after a freeway shooting in hercules this morning the gunman is still at large. good morning i'm mike nicco. live doppler 7 hd notice how die it is, clouds are back so is cooler weather we'll talk about how long it will last. good morning i'm frances dinglasan crowded on westbound 80 through berkeley, slow moving traffic, i'll have an update on a couple earlier accidents. a wednesday morning, 5:30 a.m., thank you for join us, i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze let's begin with breaking news in vallejo. busy night for firefighters they battled two fires first at a victorian. amy hollyfield is live at the second fire that's a strip mall on sonoma boulevard. >> reporter: when they got here they didn't have enough firefighters to go in safely

and start fighting the fire. so they chopped away at roof to make holes to ventilate the fire and waited for help. the problem was, everyone was at this fire, take a look at this video it started first, it started at 1:55 this morning and it was demanding. it was an old victorian under renovation that was on fire. firefighters say it is tough to put out fires in victorians. they went to a second alarm. at that same time at 2:17, a call came in there was another fire on sonoma boulevard. the peace baptist church had fire burning in a backroom. vallejo only had one engine left to send. the captain said when he pulled up he didn't have a good feeling. >> initially, knowing that we were by ourselves, i feared for the worst. i thought we would lose the building. but mutual aid companies got here and did a good effort to

stop the fire. >> reporter: they called in help from cordelia and benicia. they were able to save the buildings. the sign shop has smoke damage, that's it. they think the fire was caused by a mechanical failure in the church maybe a water heater. the city had to shutdown three fire stations when it declared bankruptcy a few years ago. firefighters say they felt that shortage tonight. the captain said he's never experienced anything like this in his an rear. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. -- 5:32. developing news in el cerrito this morning. pg&e crews have capped a gas leak no estimate on when four evacuated families will be able to return to their homes. the chief says crews found a column of dried dust spewing into the air from the gas leak when they got on the scene after 12:30 this morning on manila and everett. 10 people were evacuated from

the homes. no injuries have been reported. hercules police and highway patrol are investigating a late night freeway shooting that injured two on i-80. it happened shortly before 11:00 last night. the two men pulled off the highway into a gas station on willow avenue after the shooting. the chp got the 911 call describing a pedestrian on the roadway causing traffic to expert of -- to swerve to avoid hitting him. they closed all lanes for 20 minutes. all lanes were roped shortly before midnight. this morning a santa clara county probation officer is recovering from an injury after accidentally discharging his gun shooting himself in the leg. it happened last night after 8:00 on highway 17 while the san jose police department arrested a suspect wanted in gilroy on a one million dollar felony warrant for firearms vials. officers arrested the 23-year-old. they say he's a known street

gang member. the police department says the probation officer was not involved in the arrest. the officer is expected to be okay. a san francisco sheriff's lieutenant has been placed on administrative leave following an alleged domestic violence incident at a local gym. the officer was detained after getting if in a dispute last thursday at the gold's gym on market seat this is video of him in the 2009 documentary. he is openly gay and he faces charges of assault with intent to cause great bodily injury. police say the case involves someone with whom he a personal relationship. new this morning, in southern california a 3.8 magnitude earthquake shook parts of the region. the quake struck at 3:18 this morning with an epicenter two miles from marina delray. no reports of damage or

injuries reported. gilroy police are looking for the person or people who managed to steal more than $12,000 worth of tickets for this weekend's garlic festival. 1,000 tickets were taken from the association office between june 5th, and july 2nd. half tickets were for adult admission the other half for seniors and children some of the tickets have been sold online, buyer beware, they will not be honored at entrance gates officials say they are label numbers on the tickets and they know which have been stolen. 20-year-old man drowned in the rushing river yesterday. the man was swimming with two friends by sunset beach near forest hill when he began thrashing and went underwater divers found his body an hour later not far from where he went missing his name has not been released, pending notification of his family. the drowning happened a mile

downstream from steel head beach where a 13-year-old boy drowned sunday. search-and-rescue teams searching sequoia national park for a hiker who vanished over the weekend. the 31-year-old was last seen around one sunday afternoon near the 13,000 foot mark. he set out on a day hike, 20 people and a helicopter are looking for him. . hang is six feet tall, weighs 165 pounds -- short black hair wearing a tan full brimmed hat, sunglasses white t-shirt and blue pants. california's ongoing water wars will be heating up today the governor is expected to reveal a plan to carry water from northern to southern california. the governor's proposal calls for building two underground tunnels that will divert water from the delta to farmers in the central valley as well as los angeles and san diego. critics say it will devastate salmon and other fish in the delta. the project would be paid for

there's a new effort to protect whales off the coast of san francisco with alarming number being killed by ships recently. noaa is recommending that all ships slow down to 10 knots in the gulf of the farallons and national marine sanctuary. noaa says the whales are eating huge amounts of krill. the slow down for ships is voluntary for now. >> crews understand whales are magnificent animals and nobody wants to hit them. if they can see a nexus between actions that might be required of them and a benefit to the whale population, then
