>> reporter: crews behind me still working they do have the two inch natural gasline capped. there is no more gas coming out into the air. what has come out into the open air has dissipated. but, the four homes evacuated, nobody is going back in until fires test to see if the air is say. once the gas gets in there it doesn't circulate as it does out here. look what the it looks like about 12:30 this morning when firefighters arrived at everett and manila. there was a very strange sight, certainly the smell of gas is what brought them out. neighbors reported that. when they got out here it wasn't the smell they noticed first, it was a plume of dust shooting up from beneath the street. here is what firefighters did next. >> we did explosive gas readings and found there were levels of explosive gas in the area when he evacuated the

four surrounding homes to ensure that the safety of the residents. >> reporter: crews are telling me under this street is a conglomeration of gaslines. it is like spaghetti down there it took time to find the gas main to cap it off, they have done that. there are four homes evacuated. the evacuees not going back in. i got a chance to talk to one gentleman. he went -- all the people went to friends or relatives' homes. he was saying that it was not really all that scary. he never smelled any gas. all of a sudden there was a knock on his door and firefighters were to the point saying it is time to get up and get out many there's a gas leak out there it could be a problem -- nobody will be allowed back in until firefighters test the air at each of the four homes. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news.

new morning, from southern california, protesters clashed with riot police as the anaheim city council voted last night to ask the u.s. attorney's office to investigate recent officer-involved shootings, large crowds gathered, demonstrations grew violent. they were shut out of the meeting because there was no more room, police responded by firing ben bag -- several people were realized. san francisco mayor lee is expected to sign the city's balanced budget today for the next fiscal year for the first time the mayor included a spending plan for the following fiscal year. the budget will close a deficit that had been projected at 262 million dollars. it includes plans to fund six new police academy classes and six fire academy classes over the next half dozen years. the mayor pledged to restore funding for local hiv and aids

programs that were shut out at the federal level. in oakland, filming is underway for the movie about the shooting of oscar grant. one of the locations is the fruitvale bart station where grant was shot on new year's morning in 2009 many the film is being made with the blessing of bart being paid for an undisclosed amount of money by the producers. bart spokesman tells abc7 news: when there is filming on bart property the permit ensures that bart is reimbursed so taxpayers are not subsidizing the film. grant's family says they believe the movie will have a positive effect. >> i believe it will be a teaching tool for others to learn and see when police are in a tight situation it doesn't have to end in murder. >> bart officer johannes mehserle was acquitted of murder but convicted of

involuntary manslaughter. the writer and director of the independent film is -- :06. antioch police say crime is up in the if i for the first six months of this year compared to the same period of last year with a number of arrests down. antioch's police chief told the city council the department's decreased staffing is a factor the chief says violent crimes increase by 45% the first half of this year property crimes increased nearly 2500 for the first six months of this year compared to 1500 in the same time last year. the police department is down 34 sworn officers from its authorized strength of 126. the city hooking to back 10 officers -- is looking to hire back 10 officers. a woman is expected to be okay after an out of control van crashed into her home, pinning her inside it happened

fell yesterday on news the company posted the smallest growth in two years. a little more on that. apple reporting 35 billion dollars in revenue this quarter that doesn't meet expectations. a 23% jump in growth, it is the slowest rate of growth in years for apple in revenue and net income. analysts expected 37.3 billion dollars the drop isn't due to sales volume, apple met expect taste force the iphone and ipad but the price for both products has dropped in recent years. investors will keep a close eye tomorrow on facebook when the network will release first quarterly earnings report since going public in may. so far facebook's stock has unperformed. debuted at $38, closed yesterday over $28. strong report could restore some of the company's glow. strong weather report,

engine was left to send to this one when the captain pulled up to the fire here he said he had a feeling that he never experienced before. that's because everyone else was at the other fire, this one started 1:55 in the morning, two alarm fire older victorian under renovation was on fire. firefighters say that style is one toughest to deal with. everyone was busy with that when the call came in 15 minutes later for a second fire the peace baptist church on sonoma beautiful was on fire in a strip mall it could have easily spread to other buildings they had only one engine to send. this city filed for bankruptcy a few years ago and had to close three fire stations. vallejo has been recovering financially. one fire victim is focusing on the positive. >> i guess with the bankruptcy being better now the firemen told me they have two new engines otherwise they might

not have been here. thank goodness they hired more firefighters in vallejo. >> reporter: it took mutual aid from fire departments as far away as cordelia, benicia and american canyon to help out. they got the fire stopped in the strip mall. the sign shop had smoke damage but the buildings are still standing, which is quite an accomplishment, considering when the captain pulled up he told me he was bracing for the worst. he an up they were going to lose the building. no one was hurt. looks like mechanical problems in the church maybe a water heater that caused this fire. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. developing news in el cerrito this morning, four evacuated family are being allowed to return to their homes after a gas leak was capped. we told but this story on abc7 news at 4:30. the chief says crews fond a column of dried dust spewing into the air from the gas leak

when they gone the scene after 1230 this morning on manila and everett street. 10 people were evacuated. pg&e crews capped the leak an hour ago, firefighters tested the air and found it was not dangerous, no injuries reported. we are getting new information on an overnight freeway shooting that injured two on i-80 and hercules search is underway for a suspect. the car with three adults and four young children pulled into a gas station after the shooting it happened shortly before 11 last night. police say an unknown suspect fired several rounds into the white pontiac. a man and woman were transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds the others were not hurt. all lanes on i-80 were closed for 20 minutes while investigators searched for evidence. this morning a santa clara county probation officer recovering from a nonlife-threatening injury after accidentally discharging his gun and shooting himself

last night after 8:00 on highway 17 while the san jose police department arrested the suspect who was wanted in gilroy on a one million dollar felony warrant for firearms violations. officials say the 23-year-old was arrested without incident. they say he's a known street gang member. the san jose police department says the probation officer who hit himself in the leg was not involved in the arrest. a san francisco sheriff's department lieutenant has been placed on administrative leave following an alleged domestic violence incident at a local gym. the lieutenant was detained after getting into a dispute last thursday at the gold's gym on market is video of him in a document he is openly gay he faces charges of assault with intent to cause great bodily injury police say the case involves someone with whom he had a personal relationship. search-and-rescue teams searching sequoia national park for a hiker who vanished

in england one woman is dead after 400 tons of rock collapsed on top of her during a walk on the beach. video shows the scene, this happened yesterday. authorities say a 22-year-old woman was walking along the beach with her boyfriend and his father when the cliff collapsed on top of them. crews immediately responded and pulled the two men out safely. it took them nine hours to find the woman. heavy rain is blamed for leaving the cliff unstable. to politics now. mitt romney begins a six-day trip overseas today to england, israel and poland this is video of the former massachusetts governor campaigning in nevada yesterday. his first stop today will be london where he will hold a $75,000 a plate fundraising dinner. he will travel even to israel taking part in a voter drive for u.s. citizens living in the country. he will end his trip in poland where he will visit the
