to boyfriend robert pattinson. tonight, a surprising look at what happens when women cheat. >> announcer: from the global resources of abc news, with cynthia mcfadden and bill weir in new york city, and terry moran in washington, this is "nightline," july 25th, 2012. >> good evening, i'm terry moran. the king of pop may be gone, but the turmoil and drama in michael jackson's family continues. and tonight, his mother, katherine jackson, is speaking out in an abc news exclusive. after conflicting reports over her whereabouts in the last week sparked public family feuds including a battle that played out in court today, over custody of michael's three children, paris, prince and blanket, katherine jackson is coming forward to break her silence. here's abc's nick watt. >> hello. i'm katherine jackson. >> reporter: and with those words, her first public words in ten days, the jackson clan matriarch, surrounded by her

children, jermaine, janet and rebbie, her daughter, and the marketing director at the resort where she's staying, katherine gave her side of this explosive story. >> there are rumors going around about me that i've been kidnapped and held against my will. i'll here today to let everybody know that i'm fine and i'm here with my children and my children would never do a thing like that, hold me against my will. it's very stupid of people to think that. >> reporter: late saturday night, katherine's nephew trent reported her missing from the jackson compound in calabasas. paris tweeted "my grandmother is missing, i haven't spoken with her in a week, i want her home now." an abc reporter at the reading of this statement was not allowed to ask questions. >> and now people are saying that they are there with nothing to eat. i'm sure they have something to eat, but it's not healthy because the cook is not there. that's the reason i haven't called, because i just gave up my phone, i didn't want have any phone calls. and while i was here, my

assistant janice smith had been calling back home, seeing how things had been going. and she had been keeping in contact with my nephew. i mean, my grandson. and he says everything was going fine. but -- i'm still -- i was still thinking about the children, i still worry about them. but they're fine. >> reporter: here, by the way, is the mira val resort in tucson, arizona. jermaine has explained she's there on doctor's orders. she's an 82-year-old woman, she's emotional, she was reading from a prepared script and she needed some help from time to time. michael jackson's will names katherine as the guardian of his children, but today in a los angeles courtroom, temporary custody of prince, paris and blanket was handed over to their cousin, tito's son, 34-year-old t.j. jackson. >> i'm devastated that while i've been away, that my children, my grandchildren have been taken awake from me. >> reporter: in court, the judge said he was granting t.j.

temporary custody because katherine is, quote, being prevented from acting as guardian by acts of a third party. katherine's own lawyer on custody matters suggested she was being held against her will. >> this, right here -- >> reporter: t.j.'s lawyer said the two older kids signed a consent form. a number of michael jackson's siblings are still contesting his will, alleging conspiracy and fraud. charges denied by the executors and thrown out by the courts. two years ago. >> the ruling in court today was about the guardianship and i think it was based on a bunch of lies. but i have a good idea who is doing that. who is behind it. my guardianship has been taken away from me and, but i have spoke to my grandson, t.j., and also, i spoke to prince and paris last night and told them i would be home today. >> reporter: in court today, t.j. described that call as, quote, strange.

he said, quote, "the way it sounded, i never heard her talk like that. some words sounded slurred." >> i told him it wasn't necessary for him to go down and sign up for guardianship. i don't know who instructed him to do that. but that's -- because he wanted me to come home before that happened. >> reporter: randy just tweeted that last night on the phone katherine fired her nephew trent and the rest of the security team at the house. >> and i never leave home without leaving instructions of who to stay there with them, the nanny and all of them. and someone had let go the cook, the nanny and also the housekeepers. i don't know who did that. they don't have that power. they shouldn't have done it. >> reporter: today, katherine spoke with her grandkids. >> and they're waiting for me to come. okay, this is all i have to say and i'm going to say good-bye. and i'm on my way home. >> reporter: this morning, paris tweeted one of her dad's lyrics,

beckham, he's best known for scoring unbelievable goals. >> and david beckham scores. >> reporter: and selling underwear and cologne. but this week, with that proper british charm, he's selling so much more. his country. can you give us an idea of what people will see? >> us english, we're very traditional. the whole world's going to get a traditional english feel of the whole games, the opening ceremony. there's so much excitement in london at the moment. i feel that we do big competitions and big spectacular occasions like this really well and like i said, our country all comes together and the union jacks come out and it's a real kind of english feel, which is special. >> reporter: he's pulling double duty, as mls soccer all-star and london olympics ambassador. >> been amazing. one minute i'm with muhammad ali, next minute i'm in philadelphia playing in the all-stars game. another minute i'm rehearsing for the opening ceremony. then i'm at number 10. >> reporter: number 10, as in downing street, where he'll be meeting with the prime minister.

>> it's not every day that you are able to be part of the opening ceremony of the olympics in a part of london where you grew up. >> reporter: beckham's week reaches its pinnacle in two nights as a star and director of danny boyle's show piece opening ceremonies, a role so secret olympic sources say no one could guess. how did you feel when they asked you to be a part of the opening ceremonies and were you surprised when they asked you what role you were doing? >> i was surprised, because i kind of didn't expect it and, you know, i'm very, very honored to be a part of what actually i'm doing -- >> reporter: which you can't say. >> which i can't say. like i said, i'd love to. but you know, it is a surprise. >> reporter: so, will you be nervous when it actually happens? >> very, of course. >> reporter: could you mess it up? >> there's one or two people watching, obviously. >> reporter: is there a chance you could screw it up? >> of course, of course. which is worrying. thank you for reminding me. >> beckham could raise the roof here with a goal. >> reporter: but he's no

stranger to high pressure situations, having played in a record 115 games for his country and winning a european soccer championship with manchester united. all the amazing moments you've had in your life, where will friday rank? the opening ceremonies? >> without a doubt, one of the highest. to be part of the opening ceremony friday, definitely up there with things i've won, things i've done in my career. >> reporter: but to the shock of his fans, there is one role becks won't get to experience during the games. what does it mean to not be playing for britain's first football team in the olympics since 1960? does it hurt a little? >> yeah, it hurts -- of course it hurts a lot. but i think at the end of the day, i've had disappointments before. >> reporter: you had adversity in your life. what or who do you owe your success? what kept you going? >> my family, simple as that. they are there and -- doesn't matter whether i'm scoring goals or winning championships with them, you know. it's all about the family. >> reporter: the family moved to california in 2007.

couple, shocked millions of her fans when she issued a public apology for "indiscretions" with a man who's not her famous boyfriend. here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: right now, actor and teen heartthrob robert pattinson might be wishing his "twilight" character hadn't bothered to block that swerving chevy minivan. because his love interest on and off the screen in the vampire saga, the actress who plays bella swan, confirmed today she's been cheating on him. >> say it. >> reporter: yep, kristen stewart came clean, driving a stake through the heart of every teenage girl who pines for edward. and more particularly, through the heart of the actor who plays edward, rob pattinson. >> he really pined for her and he's spoken about how he wrote love songs about her and he, you know, has said that he wants to marry her. and so, i think this is devastating for him. >> reporter: so, who is the other guy? nope, it's not jacob.

turns out it's a guy old enough to be her father. 41-year-old rupert sanders, who directed stewart in "snow white and the huntsman." paparazzi caught the two kissing in a car in a park overlooking the hollywood sign. this week, "us weekly" published the pictures. >> the photos are clear. there is no question what went down. >> reporter: sanders is married with two kids. his wife of almost nine years was also in "snow white and the huntsman," playing snow white's mom. >> why does the queen want you dead? >> you should know, you're the one hunting me. >> reporter: of course, plenty of couples, famous and not so famous, have faced that terrible predicament. some say it's our animal nature. >> we are predisposed to eat meat. we are predisposed to fear when an animal's running towards us. and we probably are predisposed towards adultery. >> reporter: surveys suggest cheaters are in the minority. just 16% of married men and
