good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. the weekend is here. time to get out and about. what are you bogey to see when you get out there? here's francis, our meteorologist. >> if you get up early you will see a lot of gray skies but by this afternoon a lot of sunshine. here's a live shot from studio roof camera look out toward the bay bridge. you seat low clouds covering most of the area right now. temperatures starting off in the 50s as you wake up around 7:00 -- well, if you get ready to go out around 7:00. then it will be cloudy around the coast by lunchtime and parts of the bay with temperatures getting into the low 80s inland. by this afternoon a widespread range of highs with 60s around the coast to upper 80s inland. clear for the evening before clouds move in once again. and i'll have your seven-day accuweather forecast coming up in my next report. terry. >> francis, thank you very much.

developing news in los gatos. a fatal crash has kept the southbound lanes of highway 17 shut down until 2:00 this morning. an investigation is underway that will probably keep southbound 17 closed until six this morning. it's south of the highway 89 chp said the investigation wrapped up about 3:30 this morning and now traffic is back to normal on highway 17. >> san jose police found a car that belonged to the man involved in a double homicide. miss believe pedro shot and killed a couple in a domestic violence dispute. three children were left orphaned. the suspect is still at large and he's believed to be in southern california. madina's 2006 black maxima, resembling the car in this photo was towed and being held in evidence. >> it's a pretty good evidence that san jose's casino m8trix will be open for business. it is lit up like a riverboat it has been for some time now.

, even though the parking lot and the building is vacant, but that may change soon. casino m8trix is located just off highway 101 in san jose. our reporter john alston industries the final hurdle the casino must clear before the doors are open. >> it's quiet now, but the owners of casino m8trix in san jose are hoping that sometime next week these 49 tables will be hopping once the city's division of gaming control gives final approval. >> we've submitted all the documentation we believe they require so as soon as we get some feedback from them early next week we are hoping we can literally pay for the permit, pick it up and later next week open the front doors. >> san jose police chief chris moore signed off on the card room provided they meet certain conditions. it has to test the surveillance system, making sure there are off-site tv monitors at the division of gaming toll. -- gaming control. also the city wants to make sure it gets information from tracking devices at each table showing player activity and how

fees are collected and paid. a city councilman said the outstanding issues are relatively minor. >> i think they are all issues that will be resolved quickly and i think we can expect to see the matrix casino open k shortly. >> by law the company that runs the casino m8trix will have to shut down their other casino in town, the garden city card room, as soon as this one is opened. eventually they want to open gambling salons on the eighth floor of the building but that could take months. new casino is expected to create about 300 new jobs. it will be one of two card rooms in san jose. >> they generate about $15 million a year in tax revenue and i think we can say we will probably see a 20% increase in that over the next year or two. >> but not everyone is thrilled about the new and bigger casino. >> it doesn't sound good, some guys getting salary and spending it in the casino and they are getting addicted to these things. casino is not a good idea

actually. >> the plan is to eventually build a hotel next to the casino nine and m8trix is still look to hire about 100 people. abc7 news. in just a few hours a massive search will get underway in pacifica for a woman that hasn't been seen for days. the 76-year-old maria janssen is considered at risk based on her mental conditions and the fact nobody has seen her since wednesday afternoon. police are calling for emergency response team volunteers to help them with that search. a multi-agency task force will set out this morning at 9:00 in san pedro valley park in pacifica. a woman who is morbidly obese said she was kicked out of place to go. here's nick smith with a story you will only see on abc7 news. >> gloria turned 53 on tuesday but it's another number that has

put any celebration she may have had on hold. >> i weigh 810 pounds. >> because of her weight she has limited mobility and suffers from a host of medical issues. >> i came in because i had a bladder infection and i had my wounds infected and i had cellulitis. >> she was admitted here but -- to washington hospital in fremont, but after one week she was discharged and no one to provide her with the care she needs. >> i can't be at home sitting on this bed literally rotting because i have known to turn me. i have bed sores. if i don't get turned everyday, my sores get worse. >> this video, provided by the family, shows how labor-intensive it is to move her. >> and just because i'm big and can't walk, it doesn't make me less of a person. >> why should this be washington's responsibility to take care of you? they are not in the weight management business. >> they have more ability, more

than i could ever have to help me. >> washington hospital provided this statement to abc7 news. the patient was discharged after she no longer needed acute care. as was discussed with the patient's family. the hospital agreed to supply in-home support care for the patient. what isn't clear is what gloria can do today. her family isn't medically trained or able to help and the clock is ticking. >> i just want somebody to help me. i want to live a longer life. >> the hospital said they will provide her with in-home support services for 14 days at their expense. what isn't clear is what gloria will do on day 15. in fremont, nick smith, abc7 news. this morning a twelve-year-old boy crushed by a tree in a san mateo park is recovering from surgery at stanford. his family reached out exclusively to abc7 news, they tell us he will lose his right leg. zachary row was camping at the park when a 60-foot tree fell on his tent early wednesday morning.

a close family friend described what happened next. >> zachary was saying things like, you know, my legs feel like jelly, they are restless, kind of rolling back and forth. we thought maybe he was just still half asleep. >> zachary suffered a crushed pelvis and doctors are worried about internal bleeding. zach was scheduled to start 7th grade in arizona in two weeks. all of that on hold as he recovers. >> monday will be a most interesting day on wall street after the dow jones closed yesterday above the 13,000 mark for the first time since may but it wasn't a good day for facebook. it's stock dropped.

nearly 12%, closing at 2370. that equals a $1 billion loss for founder mark zuckerburg. at its initial stock offering in may the share of stock went for $38 a share. but don't rry about zuckerburg, still one of the richest people in the world. good morning america will have more coming up at 7:00. apple has been in talks with twitter about making a strategic investment. the new york times said the investment could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars and an investment of that size could put the value of twitter at more than $10 billion. apple has been a big success in selling phones and tablets but it has had little attraction when it comes to social media. hundreds of software engineers and designers converge in san francisco to create some apps pro bono for good. it's the second annual hack for change competition at the headquarters of change.org. some 200 software writers will spend 20 hours creating appears that will do some good. a panel of judges will choose the best entries and award a giant check to the winner. last year's winning app was called good neighbor, allowing neighbors to text each other when they need help with a task. and coming up, a surprising

>> the body of shooting victim from colorado shooting johnathan blonk arrived home last night. the veterans honored him while his casket is moved inside. he served three tours of duty in the persian gulf and north arabian sea. he died last week while trying to save another person's life at the shooting at the colorado theater. the funeral service take place next friday morning at 9:00. >> imagine opening a bag of sandy and finding a dull and

rusty knife blade. it happened to a south bay mother and there it is. you can see about three inches long and certainly still sharp enough to cut someone. here's the story and the company's reaction to all of this. >> amy eight two pieces of the jolly rancher crunch and chew candy when she pulled out a third item that made her scream to her husband. >> i said there's a knife in my candy bag and he said what are you talking about? i showed him and he said that's crazy. amy said the condition of the dull, rusty blade immediately made her concerned for her one-month-old daughter, lola. >> i'm breast fighting so eating something touching this dirty knife, i didn't know what could happen to my body, if i could have hepetitis. >> i really don't know. >> her biggest worry is there could be other contaminated packages out there. she contacted the company and since she bought it at the santa clara safeway store, she also

went to the santa clara police department. >> the item was completely sealed and the item had candy residue on it which would appear it came from the factory. >> the jolly rancher factory said it was manufactured in brazil. hershey issued us a statement reading in part, "we believe it is an isolated case and accidental in nature. we will be taking the needed actions to prevent it from happening in the future." she said she'll only be satisfied if the company does review their food safety and packaging procedures. >> they offered me three bags of candy replacement and i said i don't want that i just want to know kids will be safe. >> hershey said food safety is their top priority and because they believe it is a isolated incident they will not be issuing a product recall. abc7 news. the san francisco marathon is this weekend. you may want to keep that in mind if you are planning on driving in the city tomorrow morning. signs are already up along the

san francisco. lack for 59, one of the warmer spots in mountain view and 57 in san jose. we've got the low clouds, fog and coastal drizzle once again this morning. it will be sunny today. temperatures near normal. we will be climbing up a few degrees over the next few days. then we have this steady pattern that kind of stays with us all through next week. a lot of sunshine ahead. here's a look at the pacific satellite image over the last twelve hours or so. you notice this area of high pressure with the air circulating clockwise. we've got this slight on shore flow but with high pressure it brings us a lot of sunshine so very quiet summertime pattern with the fog and low clouds in the morning and overnight and clearing back to the coast by lunchtime. we should see sunny condition foremost everybody and then by this evening the clouds will move in again with the possible drizzle along the peninsula coast. that's the areas in green. overall a nice day ahead. look for highs in the upper 07s to low 80s in the south

bay. 80 in san jose and 70s along the peninsula. warmer as you head farther south. low 60s i long the post. and 68 for the giants game. also lack for 80s in the north bay, even up to 90 degrees in clear lake. 80 san rafael. if you are heading to the berkeley kite festival that starts today at 10:00, highs in the up he were 60s, getting up to 71 degrees with winds from the southwest at 10 to 125 miles an hour. look for 80s in the interior valleys, even up toed 0 in brent radioed, and low 80s to mid-80s morgan hills, gilroy garlic festival. 74 santa cruz and foggy in monterey for the day. for tomorrow the marathon terry was talking about with the traffic, look route for that. for the weather it will be pretty nice for runners. low clouds and fog in the morning. temperatures in the low 20 upper 50s. and then by the time it all ends a lot of sunshine with

a's win 14-9. reddick has a back contusion and he's day-to-day. the 49ers opened training camp with 35 year old receiver randy moss on the field. now 35 may not seem old for the rest of us, but months is 8 years older than any other receiver on the niner roster. moss said being around this youthful group has put some pep into his step. he retired at the end of the 2010 season. a had a rough year, spent time with three different teams but he's back and look good and fast and hoping to bring his experience to this younger wide receiving core. >> we have a young team here and me being a veteran. like i said, i've been around the block a few times so trying to bring something positive as far as my leadership on and off the field and hopefully it's been a good thing. want to go from there. >>alden smith was in camp and said he's healthy despite being stabbed at his own party last month. smith had a dui back in january.

>> this morning president obama is sparring with republicans over the economy in their weekly messages the president is blaming republicans for a stalemate in congress that could result in higher taxes on americans next year. he's pressing the republican-controlled house of representatives to extend bush era tax cuts but only for households making $250,000 a year or less. the tax cuts for wealthier americans would expire under the president's plan. >> everyone says they agree that we should extend the tax cuts for the middle class. when democrats and republicans agree on something, it should be pretty easy to get it done. but right now that's not the case. instead of doing what is right for middle class, the republicans beholding these tax cuts hostage until we extend tax

local restaurants force a two-month hiatus, san francisco's board of appeals has overwhelmingly voted to let "off the grid" bring it's food trucks back to the streets at front and vallejo streets at the edge of the financial district. >> i think that area is really lacking in food and definitely diverse food. to bring food trucks in and serve that community a wonderful thing. >> though the food truck owners say they are excited to bring variety back to a neighborhood without too many choices for lunch, the people who own restaurants in that neighborhood are not excited about having to compete with this. >> i think it's an unfair competition. unfortunately the city is not looking at it that way. >> freddy said while he pays thousands a month in rent, the food trucks just show up and pay the parking meter. and as for their customers. >> on many occasion i've seen their customers coming and using our bathrooms or sitting outside our restaurant and having their lunch because they don't have seats over there.

>> half a block away from where the trucks park, the wait staff at grumpy's has been getting, well, grumpy. >> slower lunches, less tips for everyone. >> despite the promise the trucks won't sell hamburgers. >> they told us before they weren't going to do food that competed with us which i think is very considerate, but it still took away business. >> an "off the grid" spokeswoman said the trucks will be back soon and restaurant owners say they are bracing for it. in san francisco, johnathan bloom, abc7 news. >> santa clara county crews begin spraying small amounts of insecticides on street trees and utility polls to eradicate a pest. two oriental fruit flies were found. that triggers an infestation that can be devastating for local crops. county crews will be spot spraying bait that attracts the fruit flies. it will be applied around the

area where the fruit flies were discovered. this morning at 10:00 the san francisco 49ers and usa football host a youth athletic safety camp at candlestick park was part of the protection tour hoping to reduce serious injuries among young players. it involves parents, coaches, and league training personnel. it will be seminars on safety. proper tackling, and helmet awareness. no current 49 players are involved but team alumni are expected to attend. helmet maker rodell, charter insurance and the nfl created the safety program for aspiring athletes. today the san francisco asian liver center and the world task force marks hepatitis day with a flash mob lesson about denial. there will be a mass performance of the mime "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. gathering this afternoon at chrissy field is part of the

>> happy saturday morning and a gorgeous saturday morning as we look out from our camera. what a picture looking out over at the ocean in marin county and you can see the low clouds just kind of sitting there, blocking the sun for most people but it's not going to last. it's not bogey to last in most places and it's going to be warming up a bit, too. francis has the details coming up in just a few minutes. if you ever thought that your child's school was a little run down, here's information that may confirm your concern. one-third of the state's schools are more than 50 years old. the superintendent of schools is outlining a plan to create 21st century learning environments. here's abc7's education reporter

lyanne melendez with what they might look like. >> the department of education says 10% of california's schools are over 70 years old, one in ten, and 30% are over 50. >> there's a lot of need here for the retrofit, the energy efficiency, the greening and just keeping the investment going. >> that's superintendent of california's schools who said it's time to invest in brick and mortar. even in these continuing hard times. the key is to find creative ways to fund products. -- projects. for that he asked the u.c. berkeley center for cities and schools to come up with recommendations. the center looked at how other states are using multiple sources of funding. >> sometimes they use bond funds, sometimes state tax, they may also use lottery funds or some sort of special business tax. >> oakland unified has also used grants from private institutions such as kaiser permanente.

the meth care provider has helped fund school-based health centers like the one at oakland high where students get medical and mental services. and today a new one is being built. this is the education center. >> when this project is done we will have in oakland 15 school-based health clinics in our high schools and middle schools. i think that's more than any other district in the state. >> part of the money to build it came from a 2006 voter-approved bond. now the district will ask voters again in november for another $475 million. >> i think this community understands that we are investing in quality schools in every neighborhood. the community is rallying to support the bond and it is a really hard time in california but i think we are demonstrating leadership for that positive work. >> it's worth mentioning that bond does not include charter schools, even though 20% of oakland public school students attend charter schools. in the newsroom, lyanne melendez, abc7 news.

lunchtime for most of us. take a look at live doppler 7hd, showing us quiet condition other than the cloud cover around the bay area which you can see a little light gray in parts of the south bay where it is breaking up. you see the cloud cover doesn't stretch out as far in the interior valleys. and san jose 57, 55 oakland and 53 in santa rosa where there is some fog and visibility is right now reported at about a mile and a half. also for today, once we start off with the low clouds, fog and coastal drizzle for the morning, we will see a lot of sunshine. temperatures climbing to near normal. we will bump up a few more degrees over the next few days and then a very steady pattern all of this work week coming up. so if you like today, you will like the rest of the week. here's the satellite image over the last twelve hours. you know there's not much change but with the high pressure in place, we have airflowing from high pressure to low pressure.

we get the slight on-shore flow but we also have high pressure giving us sunny conditions and that's why we have these low numbers as well. we show the fog pulling back to the coast. some widespread cloud cover but by lunn were time the only areas with cloud cover around the coast and the peninsula coast and then the clouds move in. we could see some drizzle in the evening hours into overnight tomorrow once the fog and overcast conditions spread inland overnight. highs today very comfortable and mild. look for 68 in san francisco for the giants game. we are going to get into the upper 80s in antioch and fairfield. even 90 in clear lake and a very comfortable 80 degrees in san jose. as we head to morgan hill, gilroy, hollister look for 80s. 74 in santa cruz. foggy in monterey and that will keep it cooler at 64 degrees.

if you are headed to the garlic festival, look out for the traffic on 101 getting there. it appears at 10:00. temperatures already at 68 december, warming up to 74 by noon and then the afternoon pretty warm at 85 degrees. a little bit more comfortable for the evening. bring a t-shirt and shorts and a lot of gum. here's a look at the seven-day forecast. temperatures bumping up, you will notice like two degrees tomorrow and into monday so it will be four degrees warmer by monday. then a lot of sunshine all through next week but we will see kind of the overcast conditions in the overnight hours and early morning hours. >> and just to emphasize again about the giants game. >> yes. >> yeah, the tickets say 6:00, but because of national tv they moved it to 1:00 and that's just for better weather. >> 1:00, so 1:05 to be exact. bring your sunscreen. temperatures right around 676 to 68 degrees. >> giants and dodgers as you undoubtedly know.

thanks a lot. >> in gilroy, garlic is king at the annual festival only this year the stench is from the thief who stole the tickets from benefit local charities. here don sanchez with the story. >> the garlic festival celebrates the stinking rose. an international acclaim for this city. it's also raised the interest of police. 1,000 tickets were stolen from the festival office. some people have tried to sell them on e-bay. one guy was hocking them out of a van but none has shown up here. we had undercover people at the gates look for the tickets and we haven't seen any. we are pretty sure the word got out, the numbers got out and the series of tickets they were and people were smart enough maybe not to try to use them. >> fake tickets weren't hurt the festivals but could be costly for the charities that rely on the event. there are 4,000 volunteers from 200 organizations.
