the embarcadero. you see some marathon runners right now making their way through. there's more on the story in a few seconds. but as you start out we will see a lot of low clouds and fog. even dreads he will along the coast with temperatures in the mid-50s to low 60s and then by lunchtime it will be mostly sunny, except for along the coast where clouds will stick around so it will stay in the low 60s there but getting up to low 80s inland and this evening mainly clear by about dinnertime, highs getting into the 60s and mid-70s, then the fog moves in once again. but i will still you about a midweek warmup coming up. carolyn. >> thank you very much, francis. >> san francisco city officials say thousands of runners are hitting pavement this morning for the annual san francisco marathon. these folks are going to waves, so this is a live look at those preparing to run. the race start bad 30 minutes

ago. and as we said, waves of runners taking off for the next half-hour or so. three lanes of the golden gate bridge are going to be closed until 9:00 this morning because they are going to cross there. several city streets will be closed. the marathon will wind its way throughout the city after crossing the golden gate bridge. runners are going to go through golden gate park, they are going to go past at&t park before crossing the finish line at cupid's arrow near the ferry building. now here they go, this next wave of these runners. we will be keeping an eye on them throughout the morning. we have some developing news out of contra costa county. a two-year-old boy is at children's hospital in oakland, this morning, after being malled by his babysitter's pit bull last night. family members tell us he does not have life-threatening injuries but he was bitten on

the head. officers with contra costa county animal offices arrived on california street shortly after that incident that happened just before midnight. the boy had already been driven to the hospital. a young woman answered the door and let the officers inside. their policy is to take custody of the dog, but this morning we are waiting for animals service to confirm they did so. the boy's family tells abc7 news they had no idea the babysitter had a pit bull. we hope to have more information on this story this morning. contra costa sheriff's investigators are trying to piece together events that led up to the shooting of an eight-year-old girl and 22-year-old man at a west pittsburgh home. this morning both victims are recovering from the shooting at local hospitals. witnesses say a man got out of a car on franklin avenue and shot into a home, then drove off. abc7 news reporter, sergio quintana, has the details. >> the little girl was rushed to the hospital. she had a gunshot wound to the leg. her mother didn't want to appear

on camera because she's worried for her family's safety but she doesn't know exactly what happened because she wasn't home at the time. >> how did you find out what happened? >> they called me on the phone and said michaela had been shot. i thought they were playing a prank on me but they were telling the truth. >> investigators said they don't have a lot to go on so far. they were called to the hospital after the 8-year-old arrived at the emergency room and witnesses so far have provided some conflicting information. the second victim isn't giving much help also. >> we got a second call of a second gunshot wound victim, a 22-year-old male. at this point we sent another deputy there to start investigations speaking with him. he was not completely cooperative. >> here is what investigators have pieced together. someone drove up to the victim's home in 200 block of franklin avenuen west pittsburgh. he stepped out of the car and fired two shots at the house.

but deputies say they haven't found any substantial evidence at that house. as for the 8-year-old girl, she's already recovering from her wounds. >> she will have to have some skin grafts or something? >> no. they thought she was, but it's fine. >> in concord, abc7 news. we now know the names of the two people killed in a collision yesterday afternoon in san bruno. that accident happened just afternoon at the intersection of el camino. real off the i-380 exit. a vehicle smashed into cars that were stopped at the intersection. 37-year-old mr. gomez of south san francisco and a 39-year-old man of san bruno died at the scene. three others were hospitalized. bart police are investigating a shooting at the san leandro bart station last night. someone fired shots at the building just before ten last night. no one was injured. service was fully restored and the station reopened around midnight.

at 8:00 this morning searchners pacifica will resume look for a woman that suffers from dementia. the 76-year-old maria janssen was last seen wednesday afternoon. abc7 news reporter john alston talked with her husband who is worried sick about his life long partner. >> where? where is she? i mean, the big question. >> chris janssen is talking about his wife of more than five decades. 76-year-old maria janssen. they often walk on the trails in the park behind their home. on wednesday afternoon he said he finished work on his computer when he noticed his wife was missing. >> she was not there. she was just not there. 2:00 she's sitting there, and 4:00 she's not. she walked out and so i thought maybe out in the backyard. >> all day saturday and for the past several days hundreds of searchers have scoured the rough terrain in and around the park, not only law enforcement from san mateo county and the bay area, but volunteers on

horseback, atvs and motorcycles. maria janssen is 5'5", 100 pounds. she was last scene wearing yellow crock garden shoes and green pants. authorities say she suffers from dementia and memory loss. concerned about her well-being at this point. she's been gone for three nights and she's 76 years old. >> searchers are concentrating on the park because that is where maria often hikes with her husband or a friend but because of her memory loss police say she could have wandered someplace totally different. they have gotten several tips. >> we have a lot of people in the area, hikers, citizens, residents who live in the area who might have seen her at certain locations. every time we get a tip we follow up on it. >> chris janssen wants to get information out hoping it leads to a miracle discovery but the past few days have been incredibly tough. >> not very good. not very good. this is -- we were married for

54 years. we knew each other for 58 years. >> the scaled-back search begins around 8:00 a.m. the searchers want to look at areas they haven't been able to reach so far and then they will decide how to proceed from there. in pacifica, john alston, abc7 news. >> a wildfire that may have been intentionally set continues to burn east of ukiah this morning. that fire broke out around 1:30 yesterday afternoon near mill creek road in mendocino county. a viewer of ukiah sent us this video. right now the fire is estimated at 400 acres and is 30% contained. no structures are threatened. the chp is investigating reports of a loud explosion before smoke was spotted. and reports of a man who was seen starting that fire by witnesses.

>> now to the latest to the tragedy in colorado. tomorrow the suspect, james holmes, is scheduled to be back in court to face formal charges, including twelve counts of murder and 58 counts of attempted murder. and this development. a woman critically injured in the shooting has suffered a miscarriage. doctors say it was caused by trauma, including the loss of her six-year-old daughter in that shooting. yesterday three of those who died were laid to rest. clayton sandel has the details. ♪ >> jessica went home one last time to san antonio. >> jess was a force to be reckoned with. she was a jolt of lightning, a whirlwind. >> one of three funerals for twelve lives cut short. >> you have the right to be advised of the charges. >> we've now learned the suspect james holmes was a psychiatric patient while a grad student at

the university of colorado. his psychiatrist is the school's director of student mental health services. she didn't answer when we knocked. >> dr. fenton? >> prosecution and defense teams are now fighting over a mail that may reveal clues. they said it's confidential between doctor and patient. the doctor never received the notebook but if he made specific threats she had an obligation to report them. >> it's called a duty to warn or duty to protect. >> but there's always a chance he kept his plan secret. >> it's possible the doctor had very little information from james holmes at the time this happened. >> james holmes will be back in court on monday. he's facing potentially hundreds of charges, including twelve counts of first-degree murder, 58 counts of attempted murder. two big questions, will the prosecution eventually seek the death penalty against holmes, and will he mount an insanity defense?

>> a controversial new billboard in idaho is comparing president obama to the accused mass murder james holmes. the caption beneath holmes reads "kills twelve in movie theater with assault rival, everyone streaks out." the one under the president reads "kills thousands with his foreign policy and wins nobel peace prize." the group who paid for the billboard said everyone has a right to their own opinion. and mitt romney is in jerusalem this morning where he has received a warm welcome from israel's prime minister. benjamin netanyahu grease with romney's position that iran possessing nuclear capability would be the greatest danger facing the world right now. romney has said he would back israel if it took action on its own to prevent iran from developing a nuclear weapon. netanyahu's warm embrace for romney is a sharp contrast to his cooler approach to president

welcome back, it's 6:18. this is a live look from our damage cam, showing you some clouds there. a beautiful day coming your way. in fact it's going to heat up this week. right now sit back and enjoy the last sunday in july. francis, before you know it, christmas will be here! [laughter] >> i know. i can't believe how fast the year goes by. well, you do have to be at a bit of a higher elevation to see the beautiful sunrise that we had at 6:is 1. here's another mountaintop. we are looking from vulmer out toward mt. diablo. you see the low clouds cascading over the hills. just gorgeous. we will see some of that sun actually, pretty much all of us will. but right now we are waking up underneath the clouds and it is a little gray.

just enjoy this beautiful shot from our tower. and we will check out the live conditions. looking good right now. just picking up some drizzle in certain spots. in fact, oakland reporting drizzle at 6:00. temperatures in the 50s. 55 in oakland, 53 in san francisco, 57 in mountain view. also noticed it was 52 in santa rosa and that's where they are reporting some fog so visibility has dropped to three-fourths of a mile. and limited visibility in half moon bay. not bad, though, 2.5 miles. everywhere else ten mile visibility. we have the low clouds this morning, that means fog and drizzle mainly along the coast. sunny and even warmer today in some locations. and then hot inland midweek. temperatures climbing into the mid-90s. and it's all due to high pressure that's going to be moving in toward the bay area. we also have this low pressure system and that's going to continue to give us this on

shore flow and that's going to keep temperatures cool at the coast. but with high pressure we will see temperatures warming up a little bit today and then getting really hot midweek for the interior valleys. so we will keep you posted on that as well. i'll show what you i mean with the accuweather seven-day forecast at the end of this report. here's the forecast model showing the widespread cloud cover and the areas of green where the little bit of the drizzle right along the coast. by lunchtime a lot of sunshine for everybody with the exception of areas around half moon bay as you head down toward santa cruz but santa cruz should see sunshine by lunchtime. 4:00, still see the low clouds just kind of lingering and then by this evening for dinner, mainly clear but you will notice the clouds will start to move in once again so we could see some more drizzle along the peninsula coast. look for highs near 80 degrees in san jose with a lot of sunshine for you. also some 70s on the peninsula. 61 in pacifica where it's going to be cloudier and 66 in

downtown san francisco. also in the north bay a lot of 80s for you. so if you want it cool, bodega bay at 62 but then warm, 89 in clear lake and 82 in the sonoma-napa area. also look for 70s in the east bay with fremont getting up to 77. the interior valleys reaching 90 utah. look for mid-80s as well through morgan hill and gilroy. we saw a lot of the runners for the marathon, so if you are joining them, currently it's around 53 degrees. but by nine we will see a few breaks in the clouds, 57. 1:00, sunny and milder at 63 degrees. here is that accuweather seven-day forecast. check out the numbers inland. getting up to 96. 94 wednesday and thursday. and each around the bay in the 80s. but then still cool along the coast in the 60s. >> but right now this is pretty good weather for those runners. >> it is good weather for those

>> welcome back. the state treasure, bill lockyer, is hoping to get enough votes to become the next chancellor of the state university system. today the san francisco chronicle that reports the 71-year-old former state senate leader is lobbying the 25-member board of trustees to become the replacement for retiring chancellor charles reed. this would give him a substantial raise. his treasurer job pays $139,000 a year. the csu chancellor earned more than $421,000 last year. a bone marrow drive takes place in oakland this morning starting at 9:00 to help find a matching donor for a 14-year-old oakland girl with leukemia. the screening process is simple. a swab of the mouth reveals if you can save the life of someone who needs a bone marrow

transplant. in this case an oakland teenager whose own family members are not suitable matches. today's drive for cynthia rodriguez take place on 44th avenue in oakland. that's at st. elizabeth church. it is from nine until three. some young football players got tips from the pros yesterday on how to play the game safely. usa football brought it's nationwide protection tour to candlestick park. the players learned several lessons on avoiding head and neck injuries, especially when it comes to tackling. medical professionals provided parents and coaches with tips on how to spot concussions and other serious injuries. >> because they are the ones that are going to know their child best and they are going to know when something is abnormal and they will see the child after the game and live with the child and that's where they will pick up subtle concussions. >> the helmet maker rodel worked one-on-one with players who brought their helmets to make sure they fit properly and are in good shape.

abc7 news and the sleep train have teamed up for the dream campaign. for every new like abc7 gets, one dollar goes to help foster kids. this morning karina rusk introduces us to an organization helping foster children and some of the kids benefiting from that nonprofit. >> this lady is proof you don't have to give birth to be a mom. she and her partner, deb, have five children. joshua is the oldest. he was just three when he came to them as a foster child with autism. he's now nine and thriving. >> he's incredible. he got student of the month at school and everybody at school was beaming, from the principal on down. >> the couple not only adopted josh, but adopted four other foster children because they were siblings and didn't want to break up the family. >> i think it helps that both jenne and i come from large families because we are used to the, okay, it's chaos.

[laughter] >> they first became foster parents through a nonprofit, an organization that is dedicated to encouraging more people to become foster parents and improving the lives of foster children. >> there are nearly 60,000 children living in foster care in california. richard alonzo and steven whetherby no firsthand what it is like to need a police to call -- a place to call home. >> my parents weren't there for me while i was younger and while growing newspaper the foster care system i experienced good times and bad times. i was in twelve different homes. >> the quality of foster care can often have a life-long implant. steven sits on their board of directors. >> i would like to think that the good foster homes i have are going to affect me and in turn everyone who i meet for the rest of my life. so it's very appreciated. >> the wilds have cared for numerous foster children over

campaign. well, tense. thousands of runners are sprinkled all throughout san francisco this morning from the city's annual marathon. here is a live look from the starting line there. the race got underway about an hour ago with waves of runners. three lanes of golden gate bridge are closed until 9:00 this morning. several city streets are also shut down along the course. after crossing the bridge they throw guy golden gate park and past at&t park before crossing the finish line at cupid's arrow ferry building. up next, someone who will decide who will get a car and improve their future. here is a live look showing you all the clouds there. everything is going to lift a nice day coming your way.

>> chad takes time to reflect in his garden as he waits for the city of san francisco to make a decision on his appeal of his property tax assessment. he has been waiting since last year for an answer. >> they said, well, it will be at least six more months before you hear about 2011. >> he appealed his tax bill last summer shortly after the appraised value of his home came in $40,000 less than his tax base. >> so i submitted it in july of 2011 and paid a nonrfundable $60 fee, and then i didn't hear anything for a year. >> chad's case is not unusual. the san francisco assessment appeal board says about 75% of the more than 6,000 appeals already filed still need to be scheduled. neither the san francisco appeal board, nor the assessor's office would agree to an on-camera interview. but the past president of the california assessor's

association talked to us. he said the backlog in california started a few years back. >> it started to peak in 2009, 2010, and now '11 they are down and the filing period for 2011 -- 2012 has just begun. >> he said the average wait in the bay area is now one year. as home values begin to tumble, the number of challenges increased. in some counties like san francisco the wait for a decision can be as long as two years. that's the maximum allowed by law. >> i think some assessors, because of their staffing levels and budget they have been afforded, are having somewhat more of a problem. >> for chad, that means he will be getting his 2012 tax bill before knowing the decision on his 2011 appeal.

blocked off for marathon runners? carolyn and i were just talking about how impressed we are with these folks up so early in the morning and running from the ferry building out to the golden gate bridge and back. you notice traffic is actually flowing well. but quite a few folks. >> and great weather for them, too. >> temperatures right now in the 50s. this is good weather for folks running 26.2 miles. we will check out live doppler 7 hd, although i wanted to stay on that shot longer just because it was so cool. it's pretty quiet around the bay area. just low clouds we are dealing with right now, widespread low clouds around the bay area. so we are starting off in the 50s. it's currently 53 in san francisco for those runners right now. and look for 58 in san jose and 53 in redwood city. also around monterey bay right near 55 for most everybody. so very similar to yesterday.

low clouds. we've got the fog, we have the drizzle mainly along the coast. a lot of sunshine once again and even slightly warmer temperatures in some locations and then with high pressure building, hot temperatures inland midweek, we are talking mid-90s in some areas. so here's why we have this area of high pressure. this is going to continue to move west. then we have this area of low pressure. and with the air circulating counter clockwise that's going to continue to bring us this on shore flow. so temperatures along the coast will still stay cool, but with high pressure building, that's why we are going to see temperatures getting into the mid-90s so very hot inland right in the middle of the work week, wednesday and thursday it looks at this point. so here's the forecast model. we see the low clouds all around the bay area around 7:00. the areas of green show drizzle right along the coast. by lunchtime mainly clear with the exception of the peninsula coast where the clouds will just kind of stick around all day.

even the afternoon they never fully clear. half moon bay. and then this evening the clouds will move in once again with more drizzle overnight. but it doesn't look like the marine layer will be as thick as it was this morning. so we could see even warmer temperatures tomorrow. look for a high of 66 in san francisco. if you are heading to the giants game. 72 in oakland. 86 in concord and 82 in napa, 80 in san jose. also around the monterey bay, 73 in santa cruz. and gilroy at 85 degrees. last day of the gilroy garlic festival. it starts off at 67 degrees with cloud cover. then it warms up by almost ten degrees. by lunchtime pretty hot, 85. then a little bit more moderate by 7:00 this evening, 75 degrees. still pretty warm t-shirt and shorts weather. so 90s, mid-90s wednesday and thursday. so some really hot weather.

of. >> it should be a great day to take your doing for a walk and you can help raise money at the same time for the berkeley east bayman society. it's a one mile dog walk along the bay and it has the goal of raising $45,000 to help homeless pets. there will be all kinds of activities for kids and dogs from noon to 4:00 this afternoon. so francis, it is something like bay to barkers or the gilroy garlic festival for the giants game, the weather should be nice? >> yeah. we will see a lot of sunshine, especially once it gets to lunchtime. temperatures will be much like yesterday, even a little warmer in some locations. and we are starting off with the low clouds and fog. temperatures right now 53 trees in san francisco. you see a lot of these runners for the san francisco marathon head ag cross the golden gate bridge right now. carolyn was telling us that lanes will be blocked until about 9:00 this morning, but traffic seems to be fine.
