boycott of the restaurant, after the restaurant's president said this about gay marriage. >> we shake our fist and say, we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage. >> reporter: those comments set off a firestorm, rallying both sides of the debate. >> i believe marriage is between a man and a woman. >> this is an issue of freedom of speech. it's an issue of equality and human dignity. >> reporter: earlier in the week, chick-fil-a supporters lined up in droves across the country, making a statement about traditional marriage with their chicken sandwich. billy graham, mike huckabee and the palins showed their support. nearly 100,000 people have been invited to today's kiss-in. but some people think the demonstration will have little impact on the company's bottom line. >> i agree with chick-fil-a's position. personally, i bet there are people who believe in gay marriage or are gay. and i'll bet you they're still eating at chick-fil-a. >> reporter: chick-fil-a says it's always been upfront about its core beliefs. the company's founder uses biblical principles to manage the business. for example, chick-fil-a is

closed on sundays. rob and sunny? >> should be an interesting day. thanks, tahman. other news this friday morning, traffic is moving on interstate 55 in illinois, after a horrific bus crash was cleared away. a graduate student from india, a young woman, in fact, was killed in that tragedy. the accident is once again raising alarms about the safety of the low-cost bus lines. abc's lisa stark has the story. >> reporter: it was a violent crash. the double-decker megabus traveling at highway speeds rammed into the concrete pillar of an overpass. investigators say it may have been a blown tire, causing the driver to lose control. there were more than 60 passengers onboard. at least one died. rescuers had to use ladders to reach those on the upper deck. dozens of ambulances and the injured, at least 25 people, to local hospitals, some critically hurt. the bus was traveling on interstate 55, from chicago to st. louis. then, scheduled to continue on to kansas city.

megabus is the largest so-called curbside bus operator in the u.s. buses that pick up passengers on the street, no depot. in december of 2010, four passengers died on a megabus, after the driver missed an exit and crashed near syracuse, new york. the company says it has the highest safety rating from the federal government. but there is increasing concern about the safety of these curbside bus operators overall. their cheap fares are attracting hordes of riders. passenger traffic jumped 30% last year alone. and the fatal accident rate for curbside buses, seven-times that of greyhound, according to the ntsb. megabus tells abc news it has a detailed safety and training program in place. and the company says it's working with investigators to try to figure out what went wrong. lisa stark, abc news, washington. tropical storm ernesto is barreling across the eastern caribbean this morning with 50-mile-per-hour winds.

ernesto is expected to dump heavy rain before passing near jamaica and puerto rico over the weekend. ernesto could grow into a hurricane as it approaches mexico next week. it's too soon to tell if it will affect the u.s. as this summer's drought gets worse, congress is battling over relief aid to livestock and tree farmers. the house voted to restore an expired program to help them. but no action is planned in the senate because leaders are holding out for a vote on comprehensive five-year farm policy bill. >> what's the name of that storm again? >> ernesto. >> i appreciate that. thank you. in political news this morning, mitt romney is back on the stump after his trip overseas. the republican presidential challenger promised to turn around the economy at two rallies in colorado. but senate democrat harry reid says he may know why romney will not release more tax returns. reid is claiming a former bain

investor said that romney did not pay any taxes for ten years. romney says reid should put up or shut up about who that investor might be. other lawmakers agree. meanwhile, president obama campaigned in florida where he called romney's economic policies, quote, trickle-down fairy dust. in addition, supporters there serenaded the president with a chorus of "happy birthday." mr. obama turns 61 tomorrow. and his wish is to get electoral votes next november. >> that's a pretty good wish. time, now, for weather from across the nation. showers in the south from miami to nashville. a chance of afternoon thunderstorms in the northeast and midwest. hail, gusty winds and flash flooding from minneapolis to sioux falls. thunderstorms in the southwest. another scorcher in the plains. >> 102 in dallas. 110 in oklahoma city. i think they've had like 16 or 17-straight days of 100 degrees or warmer. they're baking in that part of the country. mostly 90s, meanwhile, across the east coast and plains. 80s in the northern rockies and pacific northwest. and when we come back, a

morning's july unemployment report. the weekly jobless benefits report showed a little improvement. retail sales last month were better than expected, thanks to summer clothing purchases. but mortgage rates rose this week after hitting new lows for the last four weeks. federal officials have announced a major food recall involving literally tons of ground beef. 19 tons, in fact, of frozen bacon cheeseburger patties from the kenosha beef company are being recalled. usda inspectors say the meat could have piece of gasket material in it. the burgers are sold in seven states in the east and in the midwest. well, it's looking even more likely there will be an announcement soon on the next iphone. sharp says it's about to start shipping new display screens to apple. sources say the screens are about 30% bigger than the current model. the official announcement is expected september 12th. the company that put a major

scare into wall street this week is now fighting for its life. knight capital's new software issued millions of accidental buy and sell orders within about an hour. that glitch is now costing the broker 440 million bucks. that's most of its money. major customers have bolted. knight capital could face legal action. if you wonder where your tax dollars are going, here's an answer you're not going to like. the irs may have given more than $5 billion in tax refunds to identity thieves who filed fraudulent returns. get this. 1 address in michigan alone was used to file more than 2,000 tax returns last year. how do they not catch that? well, when we come back, porn at the pentagon. a warning goes out to defense workers who have their eye on something other than national security. and more hard news this morning. golden moments. glory for team usa. and a look ahead to today's olympic action.

a wildfire in northern california's threatening about 100 homes after scorching nearly 1,000 acres. the fire has been burning near the shasta trinity national forest since wednesday. it's only about 20% contained. but officials hope to have it fully under control by sunday. >> how many wildfires have we seen this year? wow. now, we'll take a look at your morning road conditions on this friday. a wet commute across the south from florida to the tennessee valley. thunderstorms drench highways in the dakotas, minnesota and nebraska. and a slick ride in the four corners of the southwest. >> it's a good day for flying. just a couple weather-related airport delays in minneapolis and atlanta. and back to the news this morning. all operations remain shut down this morning at a key government nuclear facility in tennessee. this, as officials investigate how protesters breached what

should be an ultrasecure site. >> three activists, including this 82-year-old nun, cut through four separate fences. they made it to the wall of the facility in oak ridge, where highly-enriched weapons grade uranium is stored. they face a detention hearing this afternoon. some pentagon workers who were supposed to use their computers to keep america safe, may have been caught to search the web for porn. the head of the defense agency has sent a memo, warning employees and contractors to stop watching porn and engaging in inappropriate use of government computers. the memo was sent after some of the explicit material was found to be infected with malware. the family feud of michael jackson's children went another round in court on thursday. >> and the proceedings revealed new details about katherine jackson's mysterious

disappearance. abc's brandi hitt has the details. good morning, brandi. >> reporter: michael jackson's children are back in the guardianship of their grandmother, katherine. that was a ruling a judge made in los angeles on thursday. t.j. jackson, their cousin, does remain co-guardian. >> the role mrs. jackson has played is she's been a phenomenal guardian of the children. that t.j. has been a phenomenal support. >> reporter: but court documents released in this case have raised more red flags about what sparked last month's custody battle. katherine had gone to an arizona resort, under what she thought were doctors orders to get rest. her grandchildren could not reach her. and her granddaughter reported her missing. in court docents, katherine claims she trusted the people she was with in arizona to be honest with her. and they never told her the grandchildren were trying to reach her. she also stated in those court documents she was told the grandchildren were doing just fine. rob and sunny, back to you. >> brandi, thank you. meanwhile, in rural vermont,

an extraordinary revenge on the law. a man flattened seven sheriff's department vehicles by driving over them with a big farm tractor because he was so angry over his arrest for marijuana possession. of course, the deputies couldn't chase after him because their cars were all destroyed. >> wow. scary. but smart. >> that's right. and it takes a lot of nerve to lead police on a car chase. it takes something else to do it in a car the size of a golf cart. take a look. in houston, a guy driving a smart car leads cops on a chase at not-so-high speed. it didn't take long before they caught him and threw him in a squad car, where he had a little more room. and here we go. time for our olympics update, starting, of course, with swimming star, michael phelps. he goes for another gold medal today in the 100-meter butterfly. >> phelps won the 20th olympic medal of his career yesterday in

the 200-meter individual medley. fellow american, ryan lochte, was second. with his win, phelps became the first male swimmer to win the same individual event in three-straight olympics. >> superstar is an understatement for him. and that is the girl they call the flying squirrel. 16-year-old gabby douglas. we also need to call her the women's all-around gymnastics gold medal winner. >> it was the third-straight american to win the olympic all-around title. and the first african-american. it was her second gold of the games. the first came in the team competition. >> she had a great smile. you can tell how happy she was. what a night. and in men's hoops, it was a close game between team usa and nigeria. at least until it started. then, carmelo anthony and the rest of the new dream team were just unstoppable. >> anthony scored 37 points, a u.s.ecord for an olympic game. and the team set several other

offensive records on the way to a 156-73 victory. >> closer than i thought. so, here is the medals count, now, as we go into day seven of the competition. the u.s. is now on top with 37 medals total. 18 of them gold. >> china falls into second, three behind the u.s. japan remains in third. and coming up today, in addition to michael phelps' race, there are three other medal events in swimming. >> track and field begins today, with two medals on tap. men's shot put and the women's 10,000 meters. and it's the women's soccer quarterfinals. the u.s. taking on new zealand. lastly, that's rower hamadou issaka from the nation of niger. we say lastly because he has finished last in his three races so far. >> he only started rowing three months ago and had never been in an olympic-style boat until this week.

footage. that's what's making news in america this morning. >> stay with us for "good morning america." have a great friday. . >> announcer: right now abc7 news begins with breaking news. breaking news ended in a shower of sparks in the east bay this morning. police began chasing this car before 2 a.m., across the bay and back. amy hollyfield is live in concord where this came to an end. >> reporter: this is an incredible one that you have to see and hear to believe. first look at where it came to appear end up there on highway 4 at willow pass road where the man stopped and got out of his car. then he ran and they had to chase him down this hill. it was officers and a police dog running down this hill trying too catch him. they caught up with him in these trees. this was after he led officers

on a chase for about an hour across four counties. the initial call came from solano county, a report of a stolen car. they chased him to san francisco, alameda and contra costa counties. they put outstrips which blew out his tires, but he kept going he drove on his rims that's why you see sparks. that's why he had to stop, an hour later. police say he had half a wheel left for his four wheels. he drove them all the way down. officers said they were speeding during this chase but they always felt like the public was say >> i was monitoring -- was safe. i was monitoring most of the pursuit we placed trust in the individual out there and at no time did i find the pursuit was dangerous it is,
