was getting out of the building. we made sure we could get out okay. >> witnesses told investigators they saw several teenagers running from the area when the fire started. no apartments were damaged. victory for south bay muslims who had been trying to build a center for half a dozen years. the center would be built on a vacant lot. there were accusations of bigotry and intolerance during yesterday's packed planning commission meeting in san jose. the islamic community has been asking for a use permit to build the community center. the center would contain a mosque, hall and cemetery. >> we should not be held to different standards than other places of worship. >> i'm concerned about the traffic. >> the thinking is this has to be with being a bigot, it is not that.

the fact is these people live in a flood zone, rural area. >> it is about ignorance. >> in the end, the planning commission voted unanimously to grand the permit. opponents say they will appeal. this morning, san francisco police inspectors are searching for a person of interest in a diamond heist murder investigation. detectives released this sketch of a suspect they say he was the last person seen with the 28-year-old found murdered in his apartment on diamond heights beautiful two months ago. police say he had been bound and gagged last seen getting into a cab with the suspect in front of a castro street bar at 1:30 a.m. on june 12th. >> >> san joaquin sheriff's department trying to identify remains of a teenaged girl and fetus found inside a well near linden. police say they were likely two more victims of the so-called speed freak killers.

remains were found in march with the bodies of two others. the still unidentified remains appear to be those of a mixed race girl. shermantine is on death row at san quentin, herzog committed suicide in january. gay rights activists planning to protest at chick-fil-a restaurants across the country today in the form of a kiss-in to protest the company's ceo stance against same-sex . wednesday was a huge success for the restaurant chain the company says it set a one-day sales record as thousands stood in line for hours to show support for the restaurant. the ceo publicly admitted he was against same-sex marriage. san jose's police chief facing resistance within the ranks. budget cuts and shrinking

the arrest of a burglary suspect after the crime was caught on camera. belmont police arrested 32-year-old john bentley at his home after they leased a video. the video shows a man walking out of the home where the burglary was committed, loading a suitcase into his mercedes and driving off. he lives near the crime scene. he was still in possession of stolen items from the hope, including that suitcase. this morning, -- this morning highway 1 in santa barbara county has reopened. it was closed for several hours after police shot and kill a man following a long high speed chase. the suspect got out of the suv with a again and threatened two police officers -- with a gun and threatened two police officers with a gun. authorities received calls of a man brandishing a gun at other drivers. a 5-year-old stockton boy is in child protective custody

the highest skin cancer rate in the world. that seal that showed up in hawaii is on her way to the bay area. the seal was found on the north shore earlier this week. they usually live in the waters around russia and alaska it is the first time a wild fur seal has been discovered in hawaii. the sausalito center will take care of the animal. the city of san jose has a generous donor to thank for two new soccer fields the gift of about four million dollars maybe the largest private donation to the city by a local resident. the complex is already in the planning stages. the fields will have a professional quality artificial turf. the donation covers the original 3.1 million dollar cost of the project with a surplus to add a second field. the city council will accept the donation next week.
