festival. we wanted to highlight some of the positive things in this community that continues to struggle. look over my shoulder. this is the narrative that ended up taking control of the evening. there were about 2,000 people participating in the oaknd la first fridayy vepped -- oakland first friday event. they were protesting near 17th and telegraph. they were angry their application for a permit to protest and occupy the corner of 17th and telegraph at the first friday event was denied by the city. oakland police say a crowd of as many as 200 marched from 24th to telegraph and 17th and telegraph and broke a window. there were a few staff members working at the time. none were injured. off camera i was told there were a few who were still quite shaken by the incident. there is a huge amount of glass that was caused -- that was damaged in the -- by those who broke the window and during the march. protesters who broke the campaign office window

continued to march down the street. police are not sure, but campaign workers told me there were bricks and stones that came through the window. staffers have been trying to clean up the mess. there are a bunch of voter registration cards that are on the streets. the opd thinks the crowd has dispersed. now, what we have seen is the police department just pulled up with the city of oakland workers who are about to board up this window. again, you can see the amount of damage that remains on the sidewalk, and it is unfortunate the workers tell me because they say up until around 9:30 this evening when the demonstrators broke out this window, everything was peaceful. there are still a ton of people out here on the streets. you can see there is just a very different energy, and everyone who walked up to us, they told us, you know what, do not let them define this evening. everything has been fine. it is just a few people who want to spoil the entire

but of particular concern for our firefighters is a chance of dry lightning. abc7 meteorologist sandhya patel is here with more. sand yaw? >> ama, the concern is the sierra nevada has been so dry this winter you combine that with the dry lightning and it could mean trouble. it could spark new fires. the red flag warnings are up from 2:00 saturday afternoon and lightning strikes combined with the dry fuels and the strong out flow winds. the gusty winds could really spread the fire quickly. the areas under the red flag warning lake county, the northern california mountains, the northern sierra and this includes the lake tahoe area. this is the biggest concern as the monsoon moisture moves in. there is a slight possibility that there could be lightning strikes other than the area around the viewing area. i will be back with a complete look at the forecast in a few minutes. ama sph. >> sandhya, thank you. oakland police are putting out a warning for anyone who does their shopping on craigs list. thomas roman is on hill -- on

11:06 pm
>> don't carry large amounts of cash. stay awayrfrom isolated areas. choose areas that are highly populated like parking lots and grocery stores. >> now, there are warnings posted on craigs list for what to look for when you are making a purchase. but over watson says if you go out to buy something go with a couple people and make sure you are in a populated area. thomas roman, abc7 news. >> thomas, good advice, thank you. with the crime rate soaring, oakland police chief howard jordan asked city leaders to approve a youth curfew by the end of the year. there has been a 20% increase in violent crime in 2012 compared to a year ago. the city council rejected a similar curfew proposal last year, and at least one lawmaker tells abc7 news she is ready to say no again. >> when you don't have a real strategy you come up with gimmicks to make it look as if you are doing something. >> details of the new plan have not been released yet.

11:13 pm
>> no, i'm glad i missed it. i just don't support that. i believe a marriage is between a man and a woman. >> today's counter protest was tiny compared to the show of support from chick-fil-a on wednesday when crowds across the country lined up to buy sandwiches. customers were backing the company president who argued that same-sex marriage runs counter to the word of god. the fairfield franchise is the only chick-fil-a in the bay area, so what happened? >> i really thought they would have a huge turnout from the gay population. i thought it would be a huge turnout. >> in the castro, heart of the bay area's gay and lesbian movement there was some surprise over the slim turnout. >> i am not quite sure. i don't know if it was on a friday and people didn't take the time to take off work. i truly think if people didn't think there would be a huge turnout i think more people would have shown up for it. >> the national same sex kiss in day had better traction in other parts of the country, including these protests in suburban atlanta right in the backyard of chick-fil-a's
