as they become available throughout the morning. this morning a man is recovering after being shot several times by san francisco police last night. police plan to hold a community meet to go discuss the shooting. it's something they do every time officers shoot a suspect. neighbors called police when they spotted the man carrying a gun last night. police said they shot him when he pulled that gun on him on dakota street. abc7 news reporter tells us police are looking at the suspect's significant criminal history. >> san francisco police converged on dakota street after an officer-involved shooting. evidence technicians photographed the area where a 31-year-old man was shot by police officers after being chased through the projects about 6:30. residents of the area told us off-camera they heard five shots after police warned the man to stop. >> they kept hearing him say stop, police, stop, police. and he turns on them, producing a handgun, black and silver. the officer, fearing for his safety, discharge his weapon,

strikes the subject. >> is he okay? >> the man was brought here in san francisco general hospital. the officer said he was shot more than once. sur describes him as a suspect well-known to police. >> he has a pretty significant record. >> officers in the vicinity were helping to tow a stolen car. they identified a man they reported with a gun. >> they can hear it on the radio and then they hear the person with the gun description and, hey, there he is, and then the chase is on. >> the officer involved was not hurt. he will be interviewed and placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated. abc7 news. this morning vallejo police are investigating a triple shooting at a house party last night. investigators say it started as a drive-by shooting. according to witnesses about 5:30 someone in a white car opened fire on a house on sawyer street. people at the party fired back. anything of the three injuries is considering life threatening.

a teenager from monterey county who has been the subject of an amber alert for a week has turned herself in, as well as her boyfriend, who is a murder suspect. the two surrendered to border police yesterday in san diego county. 16-year-old eunis disappeared six days ago from her town. not far from king city in monterey county. two men were found shot to death inside the home. her boyfriend is one of the suspects in the double murder. in santa cruz county right now firefighters remain at the scene of a six acre fire to make sure it doesn't reignite. the fire broke out yesterday morning in rugged terrain west of los gatos. sky 7hd was to the scene. the fire raced through a rural area near boulder creek, threatening more than 200 homes. the beckers were ready to evacuate. they live just a mile from the fire. we could see flames so we started to thinking about what was important and what wasn't and started packing up our van.

>> we unhooked the computers, of course, and decided to look for photographs that were hard copies and put the cats away so we could get them if we needed to. just as the beckers were about to leave when cal fire managed to contain and control the fire yesterday afternoon. this morning a fire in the national forest is now 100% contained. yours are mopping up the nearly 1,000-acre wildfire near interstate 5, five miles north of redding. it's just one of one of several fires burning around the state. mr. plumas fire a 6,800-acre wildfire is now zero percent contained as crews pulled back yesterday because of safety concerns. in riverside county, a 355-acre fire, 95% contained. and another fire, 150 acre fire now fully contained. in oklahoma at least ten fires are burning right now including one near oklahoma city that's already destroyed nearly 60

homes. abc news has the story. >> the extreme condition turned brush fires into fire storms across several oklahoma counties. at least 100 buildings burned to the ground. almost half of them homes. a daycare center was turned to ash. hundreds of evacuated in advance of the flames. >> when i left the fire was right at my back door. >> arson was suspected in this fire near the small central oklahoma town of luther. the o'clock governor mary fallen spoke to families that lost everything along dog wood street. her managers told her this could be one of the worst seasons in the stat's history. >> this has been a tough situation when it's over 100 degrees and you have massive flames and the streets on fire. >> this family, the daughter snapped these shots as their family abandoned their home. the family feel lucky they escaped with their lives.

>> we got pictures out, we got a few clothes and had maybe 30 minutes. >> i turned blue to the face and passed out in the driveway leaving because i couldn't breathe. everything is gone. >> next door casey look for memories in the ashes of his home and found nothing. >> in a tornado you pick stuff up and you dig through and you find things that are salvageable. you come here and you move anything and it just turns to dust. >> that's mike beechier reporting. more residents are expected to evacuate as the fires continue to spread. >> southwest airlines officials are promising refunds to customers who were mistakenly overcharged in a promotion frenzy, and we do mean overcharged. they offered a limited time promotion on friday. a 50% off round trip on loyal customers. during the huge response, some customers were charged again and again and again on their credit cards. >> we have all hands on deck on our technology team making sure

that we identify the problem and that we work toward a solution. if a customer was charged overdraft fees from their bank, we will refund that. >> some people were charged 30 times for their flight. superman expected to return at six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo. last sunday the superman drive had a glitch and that stranded a dozen people 150 feet in the air for almost two hours. they were rescued. no injurs. tests were performed on the ride last week and they say nothing appears to be structurally wrong and they will reopen today. >> coming up next, the deal the man accused of shooting and seriously injuries congresswoman gabby giffords has reportedly made in exchange for a guilty plea. and obama celebrates his 51st

he killed and injured more than 13 last year. now to the race to the white house. this week president obama is celebrating his birthday at camp david. his birthday wish might be to grow more american jobs, but as david curley reports, the latest unemployment report is a split decision. >> thank you. >> mitt romney calls the job numbers a hammer blow to the economy. >> 23 million americans out of work or underemployed. >> but to make his bad news spin, he picked just one part of the report, the unemployment rate, which did tech up last month to 8.3%. more than three years now above 8%. >> good times are coming back to a naon that's suffering under this president. >> but president obama pointed to another number to spin some good news that even economists weren't expecting, 163,000 jobs added last month, so he can claim that for more than two years the economy has added private sector jobs every month. >> those are our neighbors and family members finding work, and

north. as we take a look at live doppler 7hd. we have the low fog and the clouds that moved across the bay into the never more valley. drizzle in oakland this morning but overall a more stable atmosphere has overtaken the bay. we will take you further to the east where they are still look at showers. you see the lightning strike east of reno. from susanville, mount shasta, looking at showers this morning and still the red flag warning in effect this afternoon for northern california and western nevada. good morning, san carlos, 59. 57 in the city with upper 50s from santa rosa down through san rafael. numbers are warmer from two to seven degrees warmer this morning. you will notice as you step outside. so feeling a little bit muggy but that sea breeze picks up in the afternoon and we are back to a typical summertime day although temperatures still a also shy of average today. we are warming up. instead of the 60s and 70s.

we will have more widespread 80s today but more hot weather arriving next week. we are talking about temperatures well above normal and we will bump it up as much as five degrees tomorrow. take a look, 6:00 this morning, still cloudy. but by 9:00, full sunshine in the east bay and by 11:00 it begins to burn back on the peninsula. if you are headed back on the bike ride it will be cloudy and muggy out there. warmer temperatures with 30-degree spread once again. here's a look at the water vapor imagery. area of low pressure heading up out of town and the threat of thunderstorms are out of the bay area. lake tahoe, though, looking pretty good except for western nevada. a red flag warning in effect until 5:00. could see lightning strikes all way up through northern california with some of the strong outflow boundaries and dry fuels around the northern

part of the state. still dry no matter where you go. 90 in sacramento. 100 in fresno with 80s in los angeles. back home we are talking about mid-60s today for san francisco. 80 in concord. and we've got the fremont festival of the arts today with temperatures in the mid-70s there. looking good. the renaissance fair in san jose. warmer today. in the mid-70s and down by the monterey bay, 79 in hollister. so we are looking pretty good today. in fact, something for everyone tomorrow. pretty nice as well but then getting warm inland. we are never going to see the offshore flow. still 60s at our coast, maybe 70 so quite comfortable there if you want to get away from the heat. >> and the heat on the way. and coming up in about ten, twelve minutes we will have the much-anticipated disneyland forecast. not to be selfish. >> someone is going there, huh? maybe if you are good. >> thanks very much. well, dan harrison joins us from new york to tell us what is

coming up at 7:00 on "good morning america." good morning, dan. >> good morning, terry. coming up on gma, he's the golden boy. michael phelps ending his olympic career by winning his 18th gold medal. he was then honored with a special silver trophy as the most successful olympian of all-time. come up we will hear what phelps had to say about it. and multiple fast moving wildfires are raging throughout oklahoma and the big zest thought to have been caused by an arsonist. this morning police are continuing to search for this person. we will have the latest on that. and also caught on tape. this is en incredible story. this is a teenage who cut the line, jumped the line to board a plane but his high school coach did not approve. you will have to see what happened next when the boy was told to apologize to the entire flight. we will show you that coming up and one last note, they call him the blade runner.

>> topping our news this half-hour, san francisco voters will not only vote for president and local officials in november, they will also decide whether to reform the way the city taxes businesses. the proposal is to switch from the current payroll tax to one that taxes a company's gross receipts. carolyn tyler has the story.

>> david cornell owns brownies, a hardware store that's been operating in san francisco for more than a century. he supports the proposal to do away with the payroll tax, which critics say discourages job creation. >> is it really a job killer? >> it can be. you have a second thought before you hire somebody because it's just one more piece of money that you have to pay out. >> right now the city levies a payroll tax of 1.5% on business with at least $250,000 in payroll expenses. just 10% of the businesses located in the city currently pay that. the gross receipt system would tax business revenues or receipts with the rate varying according to the industry and the size of the company. it's estimated 20% of the city's businesses would be affected. those earning less than $1 million in gross receipts would be exempt. a coalition of city, business and labor leaders is pushing the proposed change, calling it more broad-based and equitable.

the mayor said it's a game changer >> but we will tax more fairly and we will tax people's success and they would be much more willing to share in that than they would if we are trying to tax them while they are trying to grow. >> but the owner of this gas station said his taxes will triple under the gross receipts plan and car dealers also expect their taxes to soar. this one expects to pay about $30,000 more. but an industry spokesman says that the city has agreed to some last minute tweaks in new business license fees of that made the proposed tax changes more palatable. >> at one point it was rumored to be as high as $100,000 with businesses with 100 million in gross receipts. and our coalition was able to keep retailers at a rate of $20,000. so that was quite a change in

our favor. >> now those new business fees are expected to generate $28.5 million a year. supporters say overall this tax change will create more than 1700 jobs each year and in fact they are calling it the san francisco jobs initiative as they now set about to sell this to the voters. in san francisco at city hall, carolyn tyler, abc67 news. >> hundreds of people traveled to sacramento yesterday for a good deal and in the process they helped out the state a little bit. it was all part of the state surplus auction. people crowded into a huge warehouse to bid on everything from cell phones and jewelry, computers and much more. >> we have to get rid of this stuff because otherwise it would pile up in our warehouses. the items is come from surplus from agencies and tsa and state agencies and also confiscated by the california highway patrol. >> the state holds the surplus auction every three months. the last auction the state brought in $90,000. san francisco's outside lands music festival next week in

golden gate park is sold out. today " san francisco chronicle" reports this is the first time in its five years run the concert event has sold out in advance. last year there were still 1,000 tickets available when the gates opened. this time all 650,000 tickets have been sold for each of the three days at $225 a piece. big headliners include neil young, stevie wonder, metallica and the foo fighters. just to name a foo. the parks department is expected to make $1.5 million from this year's show. never mind next weekend, today is the tenth annual jerry day festival. it's in san francisco's mcclaren park. look for the tie-died t-shirts at the jerry garcia amphitheater to honor the band's leader. they will be there starting at 11:30 this morning. jerry garcia would have been 70 on august 1st.

the planet's atmosphere at 13,000 miles an hour, getting to a scorching 39,000 degrees before a giant parachute hits the brakes. and then using a landing technique never tried before, rockets will lower the largest rover ever. a rover named curiosity. it all happens in what the team calls seven minutes of terror. >> a whole bunch of stuff has to work right for us to make it to the surface of mars. >> i'm rationally confident, i'm emotionally terrified. >> because earth and mars are so different, it was impossible for engineers to test everything they wanted before liftoff last november. >> how nervous does that make you? >> incredibly. >> at a time when nasa's budget for exploring the planet is shrinking, the curiosity mission is a $2.5 billion gamble >> what are the true questions

speaking of n.a.s.a. it's making strides in its efforts to once again launch astronauts into space from the u.s. the space agency just awarded more than $1 billion in contracts to rockets and spacecraft developers. it wants to bridge the gap left by the space shuttle program. n.a.s.a. currently pays russia about $63 million each time one. its astronauts hitches a ride on one of their rockets. a new study ties global warning to three severe heat waves that have blistered parts of russia and other parts of the world in recent years. research by a n.a.s.a. scientists that is often called the godfather of global warming say the extreme heat seen in the world must be global warming. the study blames the 2010 heat wave, the 2003 european heat wave. >> speaking of heat waves, we have one modezying our way. >> we certainly do. today we are getting back to

>> welcome back. you say, gee, it's kind of dark out there. it sure is. a seagull going by. he likes being on camera. it is thick out there right now but it is going to be giving away to sunshine. give it time. how much time? we will hear from lisa argen in a couple minutes. travel to a foreign country can be both exciting and daunting. many travelers rely on maps and tour guides to get around, but a retired bay area couple said their tour company caused them to miss out on a tour of venice. here's 7 on your side's michael finney with their story. >> when we tried to go to a saint mark's we were -- >> she is showing us pictures of

her once-in-a lifetime trip to venice. >> this is the bridge, the famous bridge. >> she and her husband went on a cruise and stopped for a day in this quaint city of canals and gondolas. they booked a special walking tour and gondola ride. >> the highlight of this particular tour was the gondola ride. the couple followed the tour company instructions to get to the starting point. take the people mover to saint mark's square and proceed to the tourist office. simple enough, she says, if only that were correct. >> to our surprise, after we got off, that was not the square. >> the people mover left them off somewhere in the middle of venice, surrounded by a maze of canals and bridges with no idea where to go until they found a tourist office. >> the lady told us that we are not close to the square. >> the couple took a water bus and hurried through narrow streets hoping to catch their tour. >> there were a lot of canals so you had to go this way and then later on went back the other

way. >> when they finally arrived to saint mark's square, that was even more confusing. dozens of archways lead into this long block of buildings. which one was the tourist office? >> looking at the signs, they are in italian >> by the time they found the meeting point, the tour was no where in sight. >> it was gone. they left without us. >> she later demanded a refund of the $187 she paid for the tour, saying poor instructions caused them to miss an important part of their last trip to venice. >> i would not go back, most likely, so that will be something that i will miss forever. that that is the sad part of it. >> the tour company, port promotions.com of texas offered only 25% so lucia contacted 7 on your side and we checked on the directions. turns out the people mover terminal is up here about a mile and a half away from saint mark's square.

it's a winding route not mentioned in the instructions. the company acknowledged it's a 30 minute walk to the square. however, the company tells 7 on your side it was the couple's fault for missing the tour. it said we are perplexed as to why this guest was unable to reach the meeting point as all other guests reached the tour guide on this date for this tour and were on time. saint mark's square is a major tourist attraction and very well-marked. we don't feel a refund was warranted. however, as a gesture of good will to ms. tran, we have refunded her as she requested. >> yes, i'm glad. yeah, i'm glad that i called 7 on your side. >> the lesson here is be ready with maps and guide books when you travel, even if you booked a tour. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. this morning at 111:00

thousands of people will take to the street in san francisco mission district. it's another free sunday streets event. this is along valencia street from 14th to 24th and from 14th to new hampshire. those streets will be closed to traffic so merchants and people can play and conduct business in a fun and safe environment. we said hundreds but i will go with thousands. as always there will be plenty of food, music and family activities until 4:00. >> it's a funny experience where normally you have to be see wary and now it's all yours. >> there's sunshine on the way for that. a brighter afternoon and warmer in most spots around the bay. >> are you going to a mall. >> you know me, of course. >> yet again. >> the fremont festival of the arts, san jose renaissance fair. livermore, a taste of downtown low 60s. here's santa cruz where we have cloudy skies, upper 50s. really dense fog at the coast around half moon bay. you see the overcast. it's muggy out there. we will see a high of 71 later

on in santa cruz. low fog and clouds pretty much everywhere this morning. it will take a little time for things to clear but we aren't talking about any rain or thunderstorms. that has been confined to extreme northern california around susanville. we've had lightning strikes from a storm moving up from reno. some rough weather in western nevada. that continues today. a red flag warning there. it's been dropped for the lower basin but sil dry there. how about 60 in napa, as well as livermore, and 62 down around san jose. so four degrees warmer there with seven degrees warmer in san rafael. so, yeah, it does feel muggy this morning but the sea breeze will be back and the air mass is stabilizing. we are getting back to our usual weather pattern today before we get a pretty big warmup starting tomorrow. so we will look for temperatures

a little above average for the beginning of the work week, and then we are talking about that ridge ever high pressure to the east of us building back and that's going to spread plenty of heat, especially for our inland valleys. staying cool and comfortable, mild at the coastline. here we go this morning with the cloud cover pulling back about 9:00 in the east bay. 10:00, still some fog around oakland and fremont. but then by the 11:00 hour we have sunshine from the peninsula and pulling back into san francisco. that will allow for warmer temperatures today, as much as two to five degrees warmer. and number one, the reason is all the cloud cover pulling on out of the bay area. we are looking at really a pretty good-looking day here. if you are traveling to the north or east of the bay, still the red flag warning in effect until 5:00 this afternoon. could see some lightning strikes and hear a rumble of thunder so we are definitely concerned

they are running in san diego this weekend, not horses, we are talking about wiener dogs. this is a long running tradition, the 16th annual wiener national sponsored by, who else, the wienerschnitzel. these are preliminary races being held near the stadium. the top 16 finishers, and obviously they were easy to pick since most of the dogs didn't finish. 16 out of a field of 400 advance to go compete at delmar racetrack in september and then the $1,000 prize will be awarded to the top dog. the races held on december 27th before the big bay balloon parade. did you see someone there you really liked? is there a dog in particular that stood out? >> we are cute. very cute. >> hopefully you will enjoy the day todayal little more than yesterday. it was pretty gray out there. today we are starting off gray but more sunshine is on the way for everyone, 80 concord, 65 in san francisco with 77 in vallejo.
