department. he was helping a victim when he was ambushed by the shooter. >> multiple round were exchanged the officer was shot multiple times. the shooter was also >> reporter: the gunman died in that exchange. three others are in critical condition treated at a local hospital. among them, the police officer already being called a hero. the atf did serve a search warrant at the home of the shooter yesterday, about six miles from here. no explosives were found. his name could be released later this morning. he's believed to be a former member of the military. >> what are investigators saying about the weapon used in the attack? >> reporter: they say the weapon he used was a nine millimeter semi-automatic pistol. the atf did trace that weapon

they did get the results back they are saying little. they are saying it is just a piece of the puzzle of this ongoing investigation. let's move to the latest from mars. this morning the nasa curiosity rover is beaming back first pictures from inside a crater as it begins to investigate the red planet a day after an amazing landing. katie marzullo is live in mountain view where scientists are monitoring curiosity's every move. >> reporter: good morning. first we have to show you the celebration because it is what pure joy and relief looks like when a 2 1/2 billion dollar project comes off without a hitch. >> touchdown confirmed.
