the give before away stent start until 10 a.m.. clearly these -- away doesn't start until 10 a.m., clearly these people wanted to get here first, 2,000 last year this year sacred heart says they had hundreds more registered than last year. the demand was so high sacred heart says they scrambled to fill the need for 2500 backpacks. they were able to fill the order and every student who preregistered get will the supplies. i talked with a couple of kids who were here bright and early it >> because my mom says get the backpacks. >> i'm in line to get a backpack. because my mother doesn't have money. she went to sign up. >> reporter: sacred heart

community spokesman tells us they were able to meet the demand for more backpacks and supplies this year thanks to an anonymous donor. when the give away does start this morning, the students are going to be able to pick out their own backpack and fill it with school supplies that are coordinated with the cools, according to their grade. it is a cool idea here. sergio quintana, abc7 news. this morning, chevron will open an office in richmond's nevin community center where people can file claims related to monday's fire. long lines are expected. the company has now filed its initial report on monday's fire. the report notes five minor injuries suffered by employees, two more than previously reported. stay with abc7 morning news, in our next half hour, katie marzullo will join us live from richmond with more on the claims office opening today.

gas prices continue to skyrocket, following monday's fire. nationwide $3.67, up a penny from yesterday, 10% from a month ago. in california prices soared another six cents. bay area over $4. refinery accident is being blamed for a shortage of hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil. campbell police are warning consumers if the price of an apple product you find on the web in the next few days sounds too good to be true it probably is because the device may be stolen. robbery earlier this week of a fry's electronic store in campbell, thieves stole more than $160,000 worth of products. police say anyone buying them could run the risk of arrest for receiving stolen property. 49ers and santa clara settled lawsuit over funding

for the new stadium. the team and the county agreed late yesterday to share the 30 million dollars in redevelopment funds seized by oversight committee for public educating. the money had been earmarked to pay for the stadium project. the school district will get seven million dollars enough to balance its budget and avoid teacher lay-offs. the 49ers will get 23 million dollars. as the new stadium moves forward the team is getting ready to open preseason tonight hosting vikings. be certain weekend smith will be wearing his mouth guard. last year the 9ers opened again the saints and go drilled 24-3. smith says he learned a good lesson from that game. >> wear your mouthpiece in the preseason, bad decision last year. i mean be ready for anything it is football. the whistle blows at practice,

person today. katie marzullo joins us live outside the claims center. >> reporter: right. the center opens at 9:00, take a look behind us, one man has already shown up. tells me he is in line he wasn't sure when it opened. he says he's going to wait. if you come here you can file in person, for people who are impacted whether health or property, by the refinery fire. that firebreaking out mop day evening. we know it was -- caused by a leak of hydrocarbon vapor that ignited. multiple investigations underway into this fire. federal investigators are here in richmond so far they've been able to go through records and talk with witnesses waiting for the all-clear to get to the site of the fire. >> we are concerned about the continued frequency of incidents in this industry as well as ongoing safety

problems throughout the country. >> reporter: community demand for compensation because of this fire has been high at least 1600 people have called the claims hotline, that chevron set up. 3,000 have checked in with a personal injury attorney. already one man out here in line for the center which opens at 9 a.m.. chevron says if you have already call the hotline to file, you do not need to come down here in person. be aware of scams. already some people have been calling richmond community members claiming to be affiliated with chevron, that is not the case. chevron is not placing any calls. if you want to file a claim you have to call the hotline or coming to the nevin community center in person. katie marzullo, abc7 news. it bears reiterating. the chevron help center opens

at 9:00 this morning, 2 1/2 hours from now. held at the nevin community center, in richmond. the center will be open monday to fly day -- another development air quality regulators say they were wrong about saying there was no application caused by the chevron fire. bay area air quality management district said air samples showed toxic air contaminants below levels considered safe. now the district says actually, in one of the eight samples taken levels of the toxic compound acrolein were above the federal standard many the district says the fire generated smoke that contained particulate matter likely the source of health complaints. oakland police still looking for a man accused of kidnapping his two-month-old child and her mother. nine -- nine year-year-old
