good morning, i'm katie marzullo. inor terry mcsweeney this morning. let's start with a quick first look at the weather. >> lisa: we are starting out plenty of low clouds and fog. as the fog is at the coast it's going to burn back and keep us cool there. we do have another spare-the-air day today. temperatures will be warm inland starting out in the 50s and 60s, by noontime, upper 70s with mostly sunny conditions and numbers will reach again near 102 in livermore. the fog remains at the shoreline >> katie: lisa, thank you so much. it is official, mitt romney has picked wisconsin congressman

paul ryan to be his running mate. romney is going to say more in a special report this morning. right now let's go to abc's tamon bradley. >> people who downloaded the vp app learned about it on their smart phone. >> the g.o.p. ticket is set. paul ryan is mitt romney's running mate. he made the announcement on his app. he will introduce him in virginia. ryan is 42 years is a darling among conservatives. he has been front and center over spending cuts and entitlement reform. >> do you want a government driven economy and government rationed healthcare or do you want the america with a economic

freedom and personal liberty. >> democrats see ample opportunity to attack. in march house republicans passed the path to prosperity budget plan which would have slashed trillions of dollars over the next decade. >> democrats cried foul over the bill. controversial cuts such as medicare and expect democrats to use that argument ge against ryan after the announcement is made. >> katie: we are going to hear more on this coming up. in other news, there are reports of more deaths in afghanistan this morning. the u.s. led military coalition says an afghan has shot and killed three nato service members. that brings the numbers of u.s. and nato troops killed on friday to six. one of the fallen deck raids marine from the south bay. the parents of captain matt mcnukian is awaiting the arrival

of his body. he was known for his bravery on the battlefield and compassion at home. >> reporter: he will be remembered as hero. he was shot and killed in afghanistan along with two other marines. >> the local afghans wanted to see him. sings he had been training afghani police that was not unusual request. they shot him. >> he is matt's father and also a santa clara county judge. he says the attack came at midnight during a meal. >> the captain insist that marines observe ramadan customs so they didn't eat or drink. >> he had served two tours in iraq and this was the second tour in afghanistan. >> he went to afghanistan the first time in fall of 2010.

within the next few days. ama daetz, "abc 7 news." >> this morning all lanes of interstate 280 are open. they were shut down last night after a fatal collision. the freeway was reopened about two hours late. in brentwood chp says a driver burglaries to be cause of a collision on basco road that killed a woman. the crash occurred there around 9:30 last night. driver of a geo was hit by a toyota camry. they are trying to determine if the woman was at driver or passenger of the camry. fire investigators are looking into the cause of an apartment complex fire in concord last night. fighter burned at least 8 garage

units just off highway 242. it broke out around 11:00. no injuries were reported. apartments had to be evacuated to protect residents from heavy smoke. >> we're getting in and out of san francisco is going to require some patience this weekend. thousands of people were in the city last night to see the 49ers at candlestick. the giants at at&t and concert at golden gate park. it's not over yet. john alston reported from the concord venue. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: neil young rocking thousands as the fog comes in. he is the headliner on this first night on the outside land musical arts festival. >> mostly acoustic stuff.

>> it took well over an hour to reach the bay bridge toll plaza and once in the city the central freeway was packed. they were heading to at&t park for the giants game. one group from sanity rose more than two hours to go to bay bridge route. >> we were told it was shorter and more directed. >> reporter: was it? >> i'm not so sure but there were a lot of events going on in the city with the concert and 49er game. they told us this was going to be most directed. >> plenty of company with fans heading to candlestick which started at 6:00 p.m. >> i planned a little extra time. sometimes you can't avoid it. so i have to work during the day and come out here in the evening. >> i tried to but i didn't get the extra time that i needed. probably another hour would have been nice. >> reporter: music greeted sports fans at the embarcadero station all trying to get to

their stadium. some of them exercising the strategy of a running back trying to reach the end zone. >> we decided to take key line, because with the giants and the concert. it was a good option. >> outside lands goes through the weekend as the giants home stand continues through the weekend. >> katie: city of san bruno is telling residents construction will resume. they had clipped a gas line in the crestmore neighborhood and it happened in nearly the same location as the condemned 2010 blast. construction took full responsibility and provided a new safety plan for city officials. crews are repairing suers and water lines damaged in the explosion and fire. >> coming up next, neighbors line up for assistance, makes claims against chevron.

>> katie: welcome back. federal investigators are looking into the refinery fire in richmond and there is evidence that removing insulation from the line that was leaking could have played a role in monday's fire. they are dealing with major consequences. company is processing thousands of claims made by people who say they were directly affected. news reporter tomas ramon takes us to the claims center in richmond. >> reporter: chevron estimates about one thousand people came with cuff and mask to prevent them from any questionable air.

they came with specific ailments they want recorded by chevron. >> i've been weak and i have a rash on my face and arms. >> this mother says her daughter's eyes have been seeping since monday. they set up a claims center today. 16 claims agent took as many as 30 an hour. some residents took this opportunity to complain about chevron. >> i'm outraged and have been for years. i would be happy if they shut down tomorrow. >> reporter: mostly here to see if they could get monetary compensation to getting close to breathing toxic fumes. many residents panicked at the site of sight of flames and smoke that contained one compound above allowable limits. >> theme pretend it's not a big deal. >> some residents didn't want money as compensation. they think it's enough to know how and if they have been affected. >> do you want money or anything else? >> i'm okay.

as far as my health, medical attention. >> documented that i have in my business it is there and it affects me five years down the road. i want somebody to be able to know. >> reporter: insult to injury, scammers get personal information from people claiming to represent chevron and the county. they find that reprehensible. >> nobody is going to peemz peoples homes. call an attorney or go through one of two official channels established by chevron. >> the claims center will reopen between 8:00 and noon. also cal osha has approved a plan to enter the affected area here at chevron refinery but they have an order to preserve in place, that means that chevron can't enter the affected

area without permission for any reason. >> katie: to make a claim against chevron go to the nevin community center. it's open monday through friday and saturday 8:00 until noon. also call their hot line. it's toll free. we have the both phone number and address under see it on to have tv. >> a teenager that is accused of stealing a car appeared to be a targeted of a break in at juvenile hall. they think his friends were trying to set him free. he turned 18 yesterday and was transferred to the county jail. the attempt was trying to reach him before the transfer. a marine county deputy d.a. says there is evidence that wade was involved in the plot. >> he was turning 18 today.

there is no secret you can keep adults in that facility. probably several people could have surmise there had was a transfer that was going to occur. >> sheriff's deputies they heard something on the wall behind wade's cell and by the time they got outside had fled. but they left behind bolt cutters and sledgehammer. he also accused of a drive-by murder in mill valley. >> the state's power grid operator has lifted the flex alert for energy conservation this weekend. it shows how many electricity we were using yesterday. there is plenty of capacity. it expired at 6:00. weekend alert was cancelled because of cooler than expected weather in southern california. power grid managers says they were able to lift sit conservation, particularly the

increasing popularity of the rebates they are now offering smartmeter customers that have dialed back energy use on peak days. spokesman says the average smartmeter user to save about $10 per flex alert. >> meteorologist lisa argen, speaking of weather and short story, i was in this san rafael yesterday. it was so hot. it was so hot right around midday then i drove across the golden gate bridge in san francisco. >> lisa: a blanket of cold mist. it's about 11 miles outside the golden gate as we get the cooling effect. it tends to make warm outside of that range from the coast. so we are looking at warm conditions again there in the north bay. right now cloudy in the east bay. this is emeryville. we're talking about another spare-the-air day at 35 degree

>> katie: good saturday morning, welcome back lisa argen here with a look at the forecast. what can we expect? >> lisa: we got it all. clouds at the coast. percent yesterday meteor showers tonight. as we head outside tonight, clouds around but with the crescent moon the possibility of a hundred meteors per hour. it's pretty gray along the shoreline. half mile visibility half moon bay.

6:22 is the official sunrise. live doppler. coast will be hugging the shoreline all day long. so once again the that are will make for a cool day there. if you headed outside lands festival, bring the sweatshirt. elsewhere, spare the air. we're talking warm temperatures. 61 right now in antioch. 59 in livermore. 55 in san carlos. 59 in mountain view. overnight the temperatures have cooled and with some fog in napa visibility has been reduced. fog around monterey. we're talking about the 24-hour change, as much as 7 degrees cooler this morning. with five degrees cooler in oakland than we were 24 hours ago. we're still going to take the edge off the heat inland. we're going to have wait another day. temperatures will come down three or four degrees for the rest of the weekend on sunday. not quite as hot and we'll look for the ridge to finally loosen it's grip throughout the rest of

the week into next week. as it goes throughout the day, the sunshine will allow for warm numbers and wide range of temperatures, 35 degrees our coast and bay, look for the 80s. 90s to near hundred degrees returning. in sierra nevada, unstable air and possibility of thunderstorms there. the air quality not so great as you head into our inland east bay. with the numbers near hundred degrees and that lid on the atmosphere we're looking at the poor air quality there. moderate south bay santa clara valley with much better air quality along the coast and north bay. if you are headed to the san jose jazz festival today, it's going to be pretty warm there with temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. by 7:00 around 80 degrees. at&t park today, upper 60s by 1:00. by 4:00 numbers will be dropping with the low clouds and fog close total shoreline.

another very warm day today inland. in fact we're talking about 99 in concord. 102 in livermore. with upper 70s in oakland. if you are around the bay at our coast, it's been comfortable but elsewhere, still another very hot day for morgan hill to gilroy. 97 there. 66 in monterey. the here is the look ahead. for today, last triple-digit heat, tomorrow will bring it outnumber 4 degrees inland and translate cooler numbers across the bay. by monday and tuesday, we're talking more typical summer-like weather. in fact we're going to have more clouds around, maybe monsoonal moisture by the end of the week. it should be good but be prepared for the heat. >> katie: in sports, 49ers are holding the fan fest tomorrow morning at 11:30 tomorrow morning. last night they had their first

medicare. >> do you want a government centered society from a government economy or healthcare or do you want the opportunity with a safety net. a free economy, economic freedom personal liberty? >> democrats cried fouled over the controversial cuts to programs like medicare. you can expect democrats to attack on this issue after the announcement we're going to carry live. that is coming up at 6:00. today president obama is talking about the weather. his weekly address focuses on record heat and drought which plagues much of the nation. this july was the hottest month since records have been kept. midwest farmers are producing to produce their corn crop. he is doing everything he can to head off a food shortage disaster. >> already we have given farmers and small businesses access to low emergency loans.

we have opened up more federal lands for grazing. we are working with insurance companies to give them a break on premiums. this past week we went even further announcing an additional $30 million to help get more water to livestock and restore land affected by the drought. >> katie: the president is calling on congress to pass a bill to ensure a long time solution. lawmakers have asked president obama to relax ethanol production citing low corn supplies and spiking prices. >> in southern california the federal aviation administration is investigating a small plane crash that killed the pilot after he crashed into a los angeles neighborhood last night. the plane went down just a couple miles from the santa monica airport in the westwood neighborhood. he managed to avoid homes and power lines. you are looking at video of the wreckage and palm tree that caught fire in a corner yard.

the pilot radioed in an emergency but they don't know what the emergency was. san francisco municipal transportation agency has a policy against ads in its buses. mark matthews explains. >> reporter: he was surprised when he hau say the bus roll up with the ad on the side. >> it struck me as an inappropriate ad to object city bus. >> he took a picture and sent it to us. he thought it crossed the line. >> no matter which side you are on you shouldn't describe your opponent as a savage. >> the reason why i wanted to run these ads was to counter the anti-israeli adds that are running across the country in new york and d.c..

cancelling 50 trips a day. san francisco chronicle also reports strict overtime limits are playing a role in creating frustration. muni needs 160 more operators according to agency director john haley. union representing union drivers says the shortage is more like 300 rather than 650. twriang new drivers has not kept pace. there is also a lot of absenteeism among drivers. >> children will be getting free backpacks today. they will have a chance to have some last minute summer fun in the back to school carnival. they wanted to get them equipped to school and allow them to enjoy date. salvation army says it helps parents to meet the burden of back to school preparation. this is the 14th year of the salvation army's back to school

neighbor staring at the garden counting bees, it's a nationwide project to gauge the health of bee populations in some cities. some results are already in. as wayne freedman tells us, there is reason for concern. >> reporter: its pocket of seemingly thriving beauty a living bouquet of flowers and nurtured by the woman who keeps it. for susan it's a place made even more special because of its location. surrounded by concrete and high-rises. there is a problem in the garden, if you look carefully will. it blooms a little less every year. there is a reason. more specifically, bees. this garden is devoid of them and susan has tried. >> this is a bee house. no bees.

clouds and fog. neighbors range from upper 40s and 54 in oakland and 55 in fremont. numbers a little more mild inland. it's going to be hot once again today. although yesterday, temperatures have cooled off. we're talking about anywhere from five degrees cooler around fremont and delta and oakland. cooling around the livermore valley. don't get too used to it yet. we will climb quickly throughout the midday hours. by late in the afternoon, it's going to be quite uncomfortable around the tri-valley. hot again. spare-the-air day. it will be the last one because tomorrow we're going to take the edge off the heat. not quite as hot. temperatures will be coming down 4-5 degrees tomorrow. as for the day. beginning the weekend, much of the same with a wide range of temperatures, 70s and 80s around the bay. lots of 90s. near 90 around santa clara valley.

triple-digit heat inland. in the sierra nevada, unstable air and smoke in the air from the fires to the north. we're looking at the spine of the sierra perhaps thunderstorm and poor air quality for inland east bay. we've got pollutants and smog around. keep that in mind if you are doing exercising. moderate air quality around the south bay. santa clara valley and much better air quality around the coast and north bay. a little cooler i think in the north bay, not much downsloping winds there. that is the tradeoff but in the south bay today, still quite warm. san jose jazz festival about 90 degrees in the afternoon and then dropping but not until after 8:00. it will be a warm day there. else where around the bay, it's going to be nice in the city. if you are headed in to the giants game. look for temperatures in the mid to upper 60s with a lot of sunshine and that fog will be away from at&t park. that is good news if you are heading in. in fact, very comfortable

temperatures across the bay. upper 70s if oakland, mid-80s returning for palo alto. near 90 in san jose with 64 at the coast. 86 in the north bay. that is a little cooler for san rafael. hundred in morgan hill. 97 in gilroy. right here along the shoreline. we're getting into clearing but that going to take some time. tonight we have the meteor showers. over hundred meteors per hour. we have a crescent moon, looking at temperatures once again the hottest that we will be seeing in the next seven days. mid-80s in inland valleys. by tomorrow we're talking about 4-6 degrees of cooling. you'll feel some of that cooling in north bay valleys today and then spreading around the bay throughout the rest of the week. looking good out there. i think people have a good idea how to beat the heat hopefully.

with that, fast customer takes over. >> you're done. you go back to your life. our system picks up the phone, now navigates through the phone tree and so we actually get to a live person. we wait on hold as long as necessary. we're playing a message. that message says, please press one for your next customer. >> that is when your phone rings. but does it work when our intern tested the service using the iphone app. it worked perfectly. it worked well for a cellphone with a return number. but it no always work with the abc7 phone service. it turns out many corporate phones are not compatible with this system. >> we timed it and it took nine minutes. they called me back but it was much longer.

they did call me back. it took me eight minutes longer. >> but that would have been eight minutes you would have been hold. they did call me back. >> so i tried to call comcast. after i go through the process and system shows they have to call me back within 15 minutes. actually they called me within three minutes. >> we asked erin about couple problems and he said he would check on those and get them fixed. how much does it cost? not one dime. it's free to consumers. >> if you have a closet full of clothes you never wear, there san app for that. it's growing so fast it may be the biggest social network you never heard of. >> reporter: this may look like a silicon valley party but it's actually a clothing swap.
