>> katie: good saturday morning, i'm katie marzullo in for terry mcsweeney this saturday. we're going to start with a quick first look at weather. >> lisa: good morning to you. we are starting out with clouds along the shoreline. it's going to be another cool day there today. no changes although by the afternoon, we're talking hot again. spare-the-air day in inland valleys. in the upper 70s to near 80 by noontime. by the afternoon, not a lot of change from our coast to inland

valleys. almost 35-degree temperature spread with us. plenty of events going around the day. outside lands, you need the sweatshirt, foggy and cool there with the fog moving across the bay. today the edge coming off the heat in the north bay tomorrow and inland valleys. i'll explain a bit later. >> katie: there are reports of more deaths in afghanistan this morning. u.s. led military coalition says an afghan has shot three nato service members. that brings the number of troops killed on friday to six. one of fallen a decorated marine from the south bay. parents of captain matt mcnukian is awaiting the arrival of the body. ama daetz tells us he was known for his bravery on the battlefield and compassion here at home. >> 29-year-old captain will be remembered as a hero. he was shot and killed in

afghanistan along with two other marines. >> local afghan police uniform wanted to see him. since he had been training afghan police it was not an unusual request. they shot him. >> he is matt's father and also a santa clara county judge. he says the attack came at midnight during a meal. >> the captain insisted that marines observe ramadan customs with the muslims. they didn't eat during the daytime either or drink. >> he had served two tours in iraq and second tour in afghanistan. >> went to afghanistan the first time in the fall of 2010. we had no idea what he was doing. it was all special ops stuff. >> his family still doesn't know a lot what he was doing but they

collision. a car hit a pedestrian near the ocean avenue off-ramp around 9:40. in brentwood the chp says a driver making an illegal u-turn appears to be the cause of a collision on vasco road that killed a 30-year-old san jose woman. it occurred at basco road last night. they were making a u-turn when it was hit by a toyota camry. chp is trying to determine whether the woman killed was the driver or a passenger of the toyota. basco road was closed for an hour during the investigation. >> fire investigators are looking into the cause of an apartment complex fire in concord last night. the fire burned at least eight garage units just off highway 242. it broke out around 11:00. apartments did have to be evacuated to protect residents from heavy heavy smoke.

>> getting in and out of san francisco is going to require some patience this weekend. thousands of people were in the city last night to see the 49ers at candlestick, the giants at at&t and outside lands park at golden gate park. it's not over yet. john alston reports. ♪ >> reporter: neil young rocking a youd of thousands as the cold fog rolled in. the music legend is the headliner on the first night of the festival. >> i've been a fan of his for a long time. mostly the acoustic stuff. >> reporter: san francisco was a traffic magnet during the commute. it took well over an hour to reach the bay bridge toll plaza and central freeways were packed. a good chunk were heading to at&t park for the 7:15 giants game. it took one group from sanity

rose more than two hours to go the bay bridge routed. >> we were told it was shorter and more direct. >> reporter: was it? >> i'm not so sure. but i was told there were a lot of events going on in the city with the concert and 49er game of them told us this would be most direct. >> reporter: they had plenty of company among 49er fans with a pre-season game. >> i planned extra time. i knew it was going to be busy. items you can't avoid it. >> i tried to but i didn't get the extra time that i needed. probably another hour would have been nice. >> reporter: music greeted the mix of commuters at the embarcadero station all trying to get to their stadiums. some of them exercising the strategy of a running back trying to reach the end zone. we decided to try to take the "t" line, giants going on and outside lands, this was the best

option. >> reporter: the festival goes through the weekend as the giants home stand also continues. >> katie: city of san bruno is telling residents construction will resume near the site of last thursday's pipeline accident. construction crew clipped a pga pg&e gas line. it was scary because it happened nearly the same place as the deadly blast. they provided a new safety plan for safety officials. crews are working to repair water lines damaged in the fire back in 2010. >> neighbors line up for assistance to make claims against chevron after last month's refinery fire and bizarre break in attempt at juvenile

earlier than he should. but paul about d with the help of his mother and sister and supportive community. as he did. he internalized and virtues and hard working ethics of the midwest. paul ryan works in washington but his roots are firmly rooted in janesville, wisconsin. he is the person a agreed steadiness whose integrity is unquestioned and his word is good. paul's up bringing is obvious in how he has conducted himself throughout his life including his leadership in washington. in a city that is far too often characterized by pettyness and personal tax, paul ryan is a shining exception. he doesn't demonize his opponent. he understands that honorable people can have honest differences. he appeals to the better angels of our nature.

a lot of other people might disagree with paul ryan. i don't know of everyone who respects his character and judgment. despair. this is worst economic recovery in 70 years. unemployment has been above 8% for more than three years. the longest run since the great depression. families are hurting. we have the largest deficit and the biggest federal government since world war ii. nearly one out 6 six americans are in poverty, the worst rate in a generation. moms and dads are struggling to make ends meet. household incomes have dropped more than $4,000 over the past four years. whatever the explanation, whatever the excuses this is a record of failure. [ applause ] >> president obama and too many of him like in washington have

refused to make difficult decisions because they are more worried about their next election than they are about the next generation. we might have been able to get away with that before but not now. we are in a difficult and dangerous moment. we railroad running out of time. we can't afford four more years of this. politicians from both parties have made empty promises which will soon become broken promises with painful consequences if we fail to act now. [ applause ] >> i represented a part of america that includes inner cities, rural areas, suburbs and factory towns.

over the years i have seen and heard from a lot of families, from a lot of those running small businesses and from people who are in need. from what i've heard lately, that is what troubles me the most. there is something different in their voice, in their words. what i hear from them are diminished dreams, lowered expectations, uncertain futures. i hear some people this is just the new normal. higher unemployment, declining incomes and crushing did he the is not a new normal. [ applause ] >> it is the result of misguided policies. next january our economy will begin to come back with the romney plan for a stronger middle-class that will lead to more jobs and more take home pay

mistake, i introduce you to the next president and he said the next vice president of the united states. these are giant announcements for these campaigns. they are very pivotal. embraced from his wife and children and ann romney. not so secret weapon of this campaign. they are there with one of his sons. we spotted them in a moment ago paul ryan waving to the audience. you heard him say america is an idea. with applause we promise equal opportunity and equal outcome. as we watch this image play out. i'm going to do a lightning round with a pour house political team. jonathan, game changer? >> it sure is. this race has changed. this race is now about the big idea of what will be done to

deal with the country's fiscal crisis and whether paul ryan's vision, very controversial vision which is fundamentally changed in many ways, relationship of the united states government to its citizens, whether or not that vision is the way to go or in another direction. this race now is race about ideas. the gamble for mitt romney who knows if it pays off or he gets vilified for the ideas but it changes the nature of this race. >> you heard it's a gamble for mitt romney. how big? >> pretty big. i think he is right. game changer, no question about that. it puts both sides vision for the future front and center. mitt romney got the penalize choice he wanted. conservatives got the choice they wanted. democrats got the choice they wanted as well. they want this race also to be about the ideas for mitt romney

and paul ryan for a deal for the future. the kind of medicare cuts and spending cuts that ryan and romney are calling for. as what you saw on the podium, fluid speak where a lot of firepower, did not shrink at all for making a case against president obama. he is very skilled. watch out the debate with joe biden. >> mitt romney getting the candidate he wanted to stand by his side. democrats get the dawned they wanted. david curly is standing by at the white house. are we going hear from the obama team. >> reporter: they sent out a statement. this is going to make election day number one, refer to the fact that ryan shares with flawed idea to fix the economy with tax cuts for the rich and medicare issue, as well. i did talk to one democrat who something that george mentioned.

it is a pedestrian beeld pick and paul ryan is a dynamic speaker. he can get out there and explain the hard choices. it becomes the choice election obama wanted rather than a referendum in how the president has done on the economy. >> i want to bring in ron brownstein. part of this decision was made based on the fact they believe paul ryan can make wisconsin a very competitive state. the question is, can he make some of these other battleground must wins for romney, as well? >> this has national implications. he is a dynamic and personal speaker. one indication of this is it is going to deepen the tension between a modern republican agenda that is entitlement spending and modern republican coalition that is dependent on

medicare. democrats kaultd cried foul over those cuts. he gave a speech to supporters saying she proud to be on america's come back team. before we go this morning, let's check in with lisa argen. big day in the news. >> lisa: lots of weather going around for everyone today. plenty going on as we look from mount tam, nice and pretty. that marine layer is staying intact and along the shoreline keeping us cool, pretty foggy there. visibility has improved along the coast. it was half mile. live doppler 7-hd, not expecting rain but by the end of the week, subtropical moisture could be headed our way. 55 right now in concord. 60 in livermore. 49 in sanity rose. 53 in los gatos. right now we are cooler than we were yesterday at this time. 3 degrees cooler in san francisco, with 5-6 degrees cooler in inland valleys. spare the air for one more day. not quite as hot tomorrow but

today you are going to see a little bit of cooling in the north bay valleys. usually with this high pressure ridge, downsloping wind and less of that in the north bay. spread is still with us. 70s and 70s around the bay and we'll be out of the 90s sonoma today, but it will still be warm. hundreds will be in the inland valleys. sierra nevada, we will allow for thunderstorms, from north to south but it is going to be hot in sacramento. 107 there. yosemite, 103. shoreline is producing good air quality along the central coast and north bay but poor air quality in inland east bay and santa clara valley is not so great. the jazz festival very warm, upper 80s to near 90. 81 in san mateo today. looking pretty nice here but on the warm side.

outside lands, upper 60s with some partial clearing at our coast. low 60s from the sun set to the richmond district. 87 in petaluma. 92 in sonoma. so around southern marin a little bit of a sea breeze going on. 77 in oakland today with 80 in san he and dro. numbers further south union city and fremont, as you head inland, not any break yet. look at the triple-digit heat, it's going to be hot. 102 in danville 102 in pleasanton. later on we're talking about 76 in watsonville. 74 in salinas. mid 60s in in monterey. hottest day of the week will be today. the numbers will just be a tad cooler in north bay valleys. a little bit of cooling spread into our east bay. then the rest of the workweek,
