good morning i'm terry mcsweeney in for eric thomas. suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi gets one final chance this morning to make his case for keeping his job. at noon the ethnics commission will decide what to recommend. amy hollyfield is live at city hall with a preview. >> reporter: it is finally here. you have been hearing about ross mirkarimi's situation for eight months. today the ethics commission is expected to release a decision about what should happen to him. suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi has called the hearings an unnecessarily protracted dog and pony show. he will appear before that panel today. his whroeur a lawyer for the city will make closing

arguments today and then the panel is expected to recommend whether mirkarimi should keep his job. mayor lee wants him out and hasn't thought about the possibility of mirkarimi remaining as sheriff. >> i think we have to take this step-by-step at a time and what is before us is the record that has been establish i think people need to make the responsible decision, we hope they do. we'll deal with whatever consequences there are after. >> reporter: the mayor suspended mirkarimi from his job as sheriff after mirkarimi pleaded guilty to false imprisonment in connection with a fight he with -- he had with his wife. newspapers appear split. the chronicle has printed an editorial saying he should lose his job. the examiner has an editorial saying mirkarimi deserves a second chance. the ethics commission is expected to decide today. amy hollyfield, abc7 news.

this morning authorities are investigating another attack on a worker at napa state hospital. the patient tried to choke a tech last night, two days after abc7 news told you about the new safety measures to protect employees. these lanyards are alarms that can be easily triggered. there are concerns the lanyards pose a choking danger. we are told that's what happened. the patient grabbed the lanyard and tried to choke the worker. he was not seriously injured. police looking for a serial armed robber who they say threatened a pregnant clerk. his image was captured by a camera. police say this man is responsible for robbing five redwood city businesses in one week. maria torres is finding it hard to get past the terror she felt. >> he like this and here and

put it here. >> he pointed the gun at your baby? >> yes. >> you're pregnant? >> yes. >> residents are passing photos of the suspect. crimestoppers is offering up to $3500 in reward money. today the san francisco giants are expected to make a roster move to fill all-star outfielder melky cabrera's spot on the roster he was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for excess sieve -- excessive testosterone. the players' union filed a grievance, then dropped it after he admitted using the banned substance. he has apologized for his mistake. >> ultimately, it was a bad decision, that's all i'm going to say about it. >> not a good thing.

announced in court yesterday he has fired a second advisory council after spending months arguing successfully that he could represent himself. he was accused of murdering four women in northern california over 16 years, beginning in 1977. san jose police have identified the man they have in custody for stabbing a homeless woman to death with a samurai sword. 37-year-old marcus reynolds of san jose he was taken into custody monday night. prosecutors confirmed there are seven other criminal cases pending against him. calfire says it expects full containment of two wildfires burning in lake county by monday. the wye and walker fires have burned more than 12 square miles, this morning they are 75% contained. they destroyed two homes, this morning all evacuation orders

[ unintelligible ] nobody was hurt it left a mess. if you look closely you can see the warning and the exit sign on the building. great video, usually a cat stuck in a tree this time how can a bird be stuck in a tree? rescuers had to pull out heavy equipment. this is from wild rescue the bird's leg was stuck in a tree in san jose. it was freed by breaking a branch. rescuers say the bird was thin was probably stuck up there for several days. the bird is being treated. a group of bay area math wizards are back home this morning sporting medals they won in a competition in china. a big crowd was on hand yesterday to welcome. they took part in the girls

math olympiad. 204 girls from 10 countries competed. the u.s. team did well. all eight won medals, including two silver from the bay area and one who brought home a gold. did you see those problems? >> yes. >> they didn't look easy. >> answer was 17. >> i checked it out. >> they took an hour each to solve. the girls say they were easier this year than last. the engineers of tomorrow are getting their start today at summer camp, by playing with legos. teachers around the bay area are using the blocks to get more girls interested in becoming engineers. until now teachers say most of the kids in the camp were boys. these girls are giving them a run for their money this is medium feed if we put a small gear on top and a big gear on bottom it would go slow. >> there's a side of legos that gets more complex and
