struggle to get in and get to the victims because there is so much debris inside this home. they say there are piles of stuff, some of the piles reached eight feet tall. they've put the fire out and they feel confident that no one else is inside. when they got here they say they knew there was a possibility they would need to rescue people inside they rushed in with one hose but it was too late. >> loss of life is always disheartening. i'm confident that the crews did the best they could with a rapid response and aggressive search to get them, the best response that humanly is possible. >> reporter: firefighters were worry the fire would spread to the home next door, so close, practically touching, they were able to keep it to this one home. they don't know what started this fire. they haven't released personal information about the victims. neighbors say it was two

elderly men we don't know what their health condition was or anything about them. they are treating this as a crime scene, because of the two fatalities. their investigation is just now getting started. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. san francisco ethics commission will hold another meeting to create a written recommendation for the board of supervisors which will decide the fate of suspended sheriff ross meyer mirkarimi. yesterday the panel did find him guilty of official misconduct. stopping short of recommending be -- he be removed from office. . his wife's attorney says the8- city failed to meet its burden of proof because the commission only sustained two of seven charges. >> under the city charter since they didn't make their burden they can't remove him from office. that's the legal version.

he just got screwed. >> that's not a correct interpretation to the law. >> mayor lee released a statement saying he's pleased with the commission's decision and they are sending a strong case to the board of supervisors. the board will need nine votes from 11 members to remove mirkarimi from office. several protesters face charges after occupying president obama's campaign headquarters in oakland. police arrested at least five people last night all claimed to be former veterans this is video from a protester on the scene scott olsen injured during an occupy march last october was among the protesters. left on his own before officers arrested the oeurs. they were demanding the release of bradley manning the u.s. serviceman who leaked classified documents to wikileaks. this morning, experts say gas prices are beginning to plateau in the state after soaring in the days following the chevron refinery fire.

the state averages $4.11 a gallon, san francisco average price for regular holding steady at $4.10y. san jose $4.14 in oakland about the same -- all three unchanged from yesterday. still 13 to 14 cents higher than one week ago. cal-osha investigators officially ruling out possibility that an idling truck ignited the fire. officials say the fire engine was equipped an air intake shut-off device that detects airborne hydrocarbons saying it would have present haved -- it would have prevented it from overheating. police investigating possible sexual misconduct by a long time teacher at an elite private school. marin academy fire add unnamed teacher for allegedly having inappropriate relationships with three female students more than 30 years ago.

it fired the teacher, notified police and told him not to have further contact with anyone in the school community. list have not arrested the former teacher. -- san francisco police looking for two men armed with stun guns who robbed a consignment store. police say employees got a call asking if they could open early wednesday and after 9 a.m., two men entered. police say the robbers sparked their stun agains to intimidate victims and forced them to open a safe. they got cash, gems, artwork and coins, no one injured. yosemite national park's popular campground is being scrubbed and disinfected following death of a man exposed to the hantavirus. the 37-year-old victim stayed in a tent cabin in late june he died a few weeks later.

a woman who stayed at the same time became seriously ill. it is traced to deer mice droppings. the search resumes today for the body of a 6-year-old boy swept away while wading in the merced river. the youngster's 10-year-old brother also swept to his death he died at the scene. the boys were visiting the park with family from los angeles. a man police believe started a wildfire in the palo alto foothills is under arrest this morning. investigators think he intentionally set few small fires last wednesday. they burned four acres of land. crews got the fire under control in an hour. no one was hurt. there were no structures damaged. he is charged with felony arson. section of san francisco bay going to be off-limits to

boaters next week because of the america's cup. the coast guard will establish a restricted area from chrissy field to aquatic part in san francisco from august 21st, through the 26th, restricted area from 1 to 4 in the afternoon, marked by what are called stake boats flying large red america's cup flags. the area is prohibited, violators could be fined or arrested. schedule. this morning the federal health and traffic safety officials are launching a new program reminding parents not to leave children unattended in cars in the first week of august eight children died from heat stroke in the country. it is believed to be the most ever in a single week. researchers at san francisco state say between 1998 to the present, 550 children have died after being left unattended in hot cars. "good morning america" will have more on the program coming up at 7 a.m.. big heads-up for commuters on the dumbarton bridge, closed for repairs through the labor day weekend. the bridge was last closed over memorial day weekend for seismic work. the closure begins 10 p.m. on friday august 31st. runs through 5 a.m. tuesday september 4th. frances will be reminding you as we get closer. the dumbarton bridge will be

shutdown so close can replace an expansion joint. heavy lifting is about to begin on the new bay bridge construction project. crews are in process of moving the 35,000 ton bridge on to its cables. caltrans has put together this animation showing what is going to happen over the next three months this is video, not the animation. the eastern span connected to the steel suspenders hoisted off the temporary structure. >> pulling them down, putting in the place and using jacks. >> engineers say as the suspenders are attached and tightened they will pull the bridge off temporary supports which will be removed while that is happening the main cable will be tightened at the west end of the span they say it will move more than 30 feet as it is set into place. there's the afternoon , take on the weight of the 35,000

>> announcer: right now abc7 news begins breaking news. we continue to follow that breaking news from san francisco, firefighters on the scene of a deadly fire in the city's excelsior district. >> amy hollyfield is live at the scene on vienna street. >> reporter: two elderly men were found dead inside this home. two men living here with a lot of stuff. take a look at the garage. you can see it is packed full

of stuff. you probably couldn't fit one more thing in the. firefighters say that was one of their challenges they faced all the stuff in the home. they did their best to reach the men in time to try and save then, but they couldn't. when they got here on vienna street 3:30 they saw a lot of smoke and flames from upstairs. they grabbed a hose line enough to cover themselves and went in looking for the residents. they found one man upstairs and while they were fighting the fire, they went back in to look for the second resident, they say it was tough to make their way around the home because there was so much stuff inside. >> debris we were confronted with heavy stockpiling of debris inside the house. i think a visual in the front will confirm that we softened the bidding, a term to open it for access for ingress and egress for the firefighter and res -- rescues some areas eight foot and higher, debris

inside the building. >> reporter: firefighters say a couple other concerns included the fact that the home next door is extremely close they were worried about that house. a a live wire melted and came down they had to assign a firefighter to watch over that and monitor that situation. they did protect the home next door, no damage there. they kept the fire contained to this one house. they are treating this as a crime scene because of the fatalities. they are waiting for the police officers and medical examiner to release the home to them before they can start investigating what started this fire. amy hollyfield -- what start -- amy hollyfield, abc7 news >> investigators have officially ruled out the possibility that an idling chevron fire truck ignited the fire two weeks ago. cal-osha officials say the engine was equipped a shut-off device that detects hydro

carbons. the truck was destroyed in that fire. chemical board investigators have not been able to access the accident location because of an ongoing concern about nearby hydrocarbons. a suspect wanted for five armed robberies is in jail. deputies taking 30-year-old miguel caballero into jail after a 10 hour standoff. authorities say they got several tips that caballero was inside his home a video aired on news stations showing him during one of his robberies. >> people identified the person in the video and we took a decision mv photo and i was a -- he was considered armed and dangerous. he was a threat to our community and we are glad he is in custody. >> investigators searched his house and found evidence connecting him to the

robberies they say he has an extensive criminal record. this morning a teenager fighting for his life after being shot in east san jose last night. police say it happened 9:30 on the 600 block of sanders near story and king. officers found a wounded teenager, he's being treated. police say they have no suspects, no circumstances or motive. in oakland police are looking for the gunman who killed a man in the drive-thru of a kfc after 6:00 last night on international and 73rd. the victim drove his car out of the drive-thru after he was shot into a building across the street. the san francisco ethics commission has concluded that suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi is guilty of official misconduct. this case is far from off over. the panel stopped short of recommending he be removed from office. the commission will hold another meeting to create a

southern california we have thunderstorms possible today not only around los angeles, san diego should be dry the west of the weekend, upper 80s in l.a., upper 70s in san diego. tomorrow afternoon a memorial service is planned for a los altos marine killed last friday in afghanistan. the 29-year-old was shot and killed with two other marines while conducting combat operations. they were attacked by local afghani wearing a police uniform. memorial service 3:00 tomorrow afternoon at the st. francis gym in mountain view. the family is creating a scholarship at the high cool in his honor. california hoping to get a piece of a federal grant to improve highways and roads. obama administration announcing 470 million dollars for projects like repairing roads and bridges. the administration hopes to improve transportation and the economy at the same time. the move reflects

. policy change begins next summer congress and forest service have been reviewing the 2009 fire which burned 160,000 acres, destroyed 200 structures and killed two firefighters. the "los angeles times" reports experts say a run of helicopters after dark might have helped firefighters contain the blaze when it was just a few acres. fight against that lake county fire is going so well fire personnel are being sent home the fire is 85% contained, full containment suspected sunday 200 were taken off lines yesterday. the fire has burned 8,000 acres. there were 11 -- 1100 firefighters battling the flames. the cause still under investigation.
